SUMMARY:Other:Realm of the Dead
DESCRIPTION:Realm of the Dead is an installation/performance\, freely adapted from Rogério Pinto’s award-winning play\, Marília\, about his sister who died in an accident in the street outside the family home when she was three years old and he just tenth months. Comprising a solo performance and an installation that serves as a set for that performance\, Realm of the Dead is grounded in the work of the Brazilian theater artist Augusto Boal and in autoethnographic social work research and practice. These methodologies are recommended as vehicles for critical reflection\, self-healing\, personal growth\, and advocacy.\n\nThe Realm of the Dead installation comprises more than thirty suitcases\, each reflecting an aspect of Pinto’s multiple physical and spiritual journeys and representing the cemetery where Marília is buried. The performance\, directed by Erwin Maas\, also includes autobiographical material and explorations of ethnicity\, race\, gender\, class\, and other identities. The autoethnographic content of the piece has been reformatted into workshops for students at the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal/Vegetable/Mineral Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this RC Art Gallery exhibit\, Residential College and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design Professor of Art Susan Crowell presents\, among other works\, a series of wall plaques depicting endangered species. In Professor Crowell's effort to\, \"...question our interactions with the animal world and our impact upon it\,\" she has installed images of elephants and donkeys as protagonists and antagonists in political struggle\, and polar bears as victims of global warming. \n\n\"Animal/ Vegetable/Mineral presents an occasion to speak about my most compelling interests—plants and animals--within the mineral rubrics of clay\,\" she says.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Masks are required for all attendees. Vaccination is not required but highly encouraged. All attendees must complete a short questionnaire at https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in before entering East Quadrangle.\n\nSusan Crowell is Professor of Art at the University of Michigan\, where she teaches ceramics and holds a joint appointment in the Residential College and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. A Fulbright Scholar\, she studied architectural ceramics at Centro Internazionale di Ceramica in Rome and directed and taught in the University of Michigan’s Program in Florence. Prof. Crowell conducts research and exhibits her work locally\, nationally and internationally. She has presented projects and exhibitions in Canada (at Banff)\, Japan (at Shigaraki and Miyazaki)\, Italy (Rome\, Venice and Florence)\, Taiwan\, Denmark and China\, as well as in France and the United States\, and she has participated in a variety of international venues and residencies. In 2005 Crowell published I Compianti Sul Christo Morto: Lamentation Groupings in Northern Italy to illuminate the distinguished history of ceramic materials in Quattrocento devotional and didactic sculpture\, and to bring an understanding of their use and potential to contemporary ceramics practitioners. In April of 2016 Prof. Crowell exhibited her work in the conservatories of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan\, and in May of 2017\, at the Alden Dow Gardens in Midland\, MI. In 2018 she conducted residencies and research at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science in northern Michigan\, and at A.I.R. Vallauris in Vallauris\, France\, where she exhibited her work in La chapelle de la place Lisnard that October.\n \nFor ten years\, Crowell’s research and artistic practice has focused upon pollen forms and the process of pollination. Deploying her appreciation of the role of technology in revealing the natural world\, she applies the science and aesthetics of botany and apiculture toward the creation of ceramic sculpture\, using cast and hand-built forms. In doing so\, Prof. Crowell presents an expanded view of pollen within the problematics of industrialized honey production\, global commerce in apicultural products\, and genetically modified crops.. More recently\, she has created Thinning the Herd\, an installation of animal forms that addresses endangered species\, and Oppositional\, a commentary on contemporary political behavior in the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966
DESCRIPTION:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966 brings to light the collection of house catalogs in the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library’s Special Collections. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest\, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes\, such as\, the Michigan house catalog industry\, changing architectural styles\, the business of selling homes\, societal and cultural implications\, and domestic technologies. We hope the exhibit is not simply a nostalgic view back\, but raises awareness of our domestic surroundings today and compels us to ask questions as we look to the future.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Clinical Brown Bag: Distinct Patterns of Functional Brain Network Connectivity in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder versus Anxiety Disorders
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nDespite the similarities across anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder\, little is known about the neurobiological differences that might distinguish these two types of disorders. In this study\, we directly compared the functional connectivity patterns of large-scale brain networks in a group of youth with OCD to a group of youth with non-OCD anxiety. Specifically\, resting-state functional connectivity was used to determine connectivity strength within and between the orbitofrontal-striatal-thalamic (OST) circuit\, the cingulo-opercular network (CON)\, and the default mode network (DMN). The results of the current study identified greater functional connectivity within the CON\, as well as between the CON and OST\, in the OCD group as compared to the anxiety and healthy control groups. These findings indicate that previously noted network connectivity differences in pediatric patients with OCD were likely not attributable to co-morbid anxiety disorders. Additional conclusions from these analyses and their relevance for improving clinical outcomes will be discussed\, as well as limitations of the current project. This talk will also include a discussion of ongoing and future projects that are designed to build from this work\, specifically exploring questions about the neurobiological correlates of psychopathology using alternative classification frameworks.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Save(d) by Design
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWe begin by presenting novel administrative evidence from 840 401(k) plans with automatic enrollment (AE) indicating that the risk of retirement insecurity extends to a significant share of actual enrollees. Hypothesizing that this risk is materially affected by the initial decision to enroll at the default rate or to personalize enrollment at a higher rate\, we investigate the sensitivity of initial enrollment to non-economic features of digital design that increasingly shape plan engagement. Specifically\, we describe three large scale field experiments\, administered across 500 AE plans\, that vary the psychological design (i.e.\, color\, layout\, phrasing\, informational salience) of the digital interface from which employees decide to confirm\, personalize\, or decline enrollment. The field studies\, supplemented by hypothetical choice experiments and a survey of hundreds of plan administrators\, yield four findings. First\, we show that modest changes to the psychological design of the interface result in sizable increases in personalized enrollment\, full match take-\nup\, and average contributions—equivalent to those predicted from a 68 to 74 percent increase in the modal match. Second\, we show that marginal personalized enrollees appear to increase their initial contributions substantially and to an extent equivalent to inframarginal counterparts\, implying potentially significant welfare gains due to design. Third\, lab evidence indicates that design does not affect enrollment through standard economic channels of preferences/beliefs or often-cited behavioral frictions (inattention\, confusion\, distrust) and suggests instead that enrollment may emerge from a non-deliberative process in which design shifts affective appraisals. Finally\, an industry survey shows that most plan administrators underestimate the potency of design and cannot identify optimal design elements. The findings raise new concerns about the retirement preparedness of 401(k) enrollees\, highlight the potentially profound\, and largely unrecognized\, influence of digital design on financial decisions such as savings\, and challenge basic economic assumptions underlying prevailing approaches to consumer protection and welfare analyses.\n\n(To attend this online event\, please complete the form to receive email instructions and announcements for this and future SBEE Seminars.)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Mu2e: The Muon-to-Electron Conversion Experiment at\nFermilab
DESCRIPTION:The Mu2e Experiment\, based at Fermilab\, will search for the coherent\, neutrino-less conversion of a negative muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus. Such a process would exhibit Charged Lepton Flavor Violation (CLFV). Observation of CLFV would be an unambiguous signal of physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). Mu2e aims to improve the previous upper limit by four orders of magnitude\, and reach an unprecedented single-event-sensitivity of 3 × 10^{−17} on the conversion rate\, a 90% CL of 8 ×10^{−17}\, and a 5σ discovery reach at 2 ×10^{−16}. Mu2e is sensitive to a wide range of BSM models and will indirectly probe mass scales up to 10^4 TeV/c^2. To achieve its design goal\, Mu2e will utilize an integrated system of solenoids to create the most intense muon beam in the world. The background will be well-understood and kept at a sub-event level. Mu2e will be an indispensable piece of the global search for BSM over the next decade. The experiment is approaching a very important and exciting stage in its life-cycle. Construction is well underway. Many components have already been procured\, delivered and fully tested. Operations are scheduled to begin in the upcoming years. This talk will explore the physics motivations\, design\, and current status of the Mu2e Experiment.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MIDAS Seminar Series & Department of Statistics Co-Present: Jie Chen & Linwei Hu\, Wells Fargo
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Supervised machine learning (SML) techniques\, such as neural networks and gradient boosting machines\, are being adopted in the banking industry due to their superior predictive performance and ability to do automated feature engineering. However\, the black—box nature of these complex models poses challenges in regulated industries such as banking\, where one needs to understand and explain the results to various stakeholders. Many interpretability tools have been (and are being) developed to address this challenge. In addition\, attempts to build inherently interpretable machine learning model is becoming popular. This talk will start with an overview of the SML algorithms in banking and use some application to compare their performance. We will then describe techniques for machine learning interpretability and discuss some of our own research on post hoc methods\, surrogate models\, and inherently-interpretable models.\n\nJie Chen is Managing Director in Corporate Model Risk at Wells Fargo. She is currently managing the Cross-functional Model Validation team. She previously lead the Statistical Modeling and Machine Learning team in the Advanced Technologies for Modeling (AToM) Group for seven years\, focusing on development of cutting-edge models\, algorithms\, and a computing platform to advance the Bank’s practice in the areas of credit\, operational\, and market risk management. She has over ten year experience on machine learning\, artificial intelligence and advanced statistics in the banking industry. Jie holds a Ph.D. in Statistics from the Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.\n\nLinwei Hu is Vice President in the Advanced Technologies for Modeling (AToM) team inside Corporate Model Risk\, Wells Fargo. He joined Wells Fargo in January 2015\, shortly after he received his PhD degree in Statistics from University of Georgia. He has been with the bank ever since. His work is primarily on researching the latest statistics and machine learning methodologies\, with a focus on interpreting black box machine learning models and developing self-interpretable machine learning models. In addition\, he is also one of the contributor and maintainer of an internal python library for model validation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:RNA Innovation Seminar
DESCRIPTION:\"Fluorescent nucleoside analogues with new properties\"\n\nHYBRID EVENT\nin-person: Forum Hall\, Palmer Commons\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN__vvE2dtHQi-R3h05JUHBzQ\n\nABSTRACT\nFluorescent nucleoside analogues (FNAs) are powerful probes for studying the structure and dynamics of nucleic acids\, which are vital to understanding RNA function\, DNA damage repair\, nucleic acid–protein interactions\, regulatory mechanisms for gene expression\, and other aspects of nucleic acid function. Existing FNAs are prone to quenching by base pairing and stacking\, are clustered at the blue–green end of the visible spectrum\, and have limited brightness as compared with conventional fluorophores. Studies of nucleic acid function would benefit greatly from overcoming these limitations. We have designed\, synthesized\, and studied a series of fluorescent pyrimidine analogues\, aiming to address these limitations and develop a detailed understanding of the relationships between chemical structure and fluorescent responses to local environment in nucleic acids. Included in this series is a tricyclic cytidine analogue DEAtC that is nearly non-fluorescent as a nucleoside\, but responds to matched base pairing and stacking with a fluorescence turn-on. A chlorinated tricyclic cytidine 8-Cl-tCO reports on local environment by changes in the vibrational fine structure of its emission spectra. To address the problem of limited brightness\, we have design and synthesized a new NFA that we call ABN\, which has a conjugated push–pull system similar to those found in bright fluorophores such as rhodamines. ABN is the brightest known FNA when present in duplex nucleic acids\, and it is readily detected in single-molecule fluorescence measurements using both 1-photon and 2-photon excitation. Collectively\, these FNAs offer new capabilities for biophysical studies on nucleic acids. Comparisons of their structure and properties help to reveal mechanisms for fluorescence changes in response to local environment in nucleic acids.

DESCRIPTION:In response to the development of new highly effective but expensive treatments\, policymakers\, payors\, and health systems are considering novel and pragmatic ways to provide high-cost treatments to patients. One approach targets treatments using AI/ML-based approaches to those most likely to benefit (i.e.\, risk stratify to identify those at highest risk of complications)\; another is to optimize the delivery of treatment to provide high-value care while containing costs. In addition\, there may be broader applicability of AI/ML-guided care in low resource settings\, such as low- and middle-income countries. AI/ML can do this in a variety of settings and is exemplified in the article provided. This seminar will outline one such approach using a treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as a use case.\n\nDr. Akbar K. Waljee\, is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine Dr. Waljee serves as the Associate Director of the Data and Methods Hub and the Director of the Michigan Integrated Center for Health Analytics and Medical Prediction (MiCHAMP) both at the UM Institute for Healthcare Policy & Innovation (IHPI). He also serves as the Director of the VA CCMR Prediction Modeling Unit (PMU) and\, clinically\, he is the Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease clinic both at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System.\n\nDr. Waljee was born in Kenya and moved to the United States to complete his undergraduate and medical degrees at Emory University in Atlanta\, GA. He then completed his residency and fellowship at the University of Michigan. Dr. Waljee holds a Master’s degree in Health Services Research from the University of Michigan and completed a heath care policy fellowship at the Center for Health and Research Transformation.\n\nDr. Waljee’s work is at the forefront of using machine learning and deep learning techniques to improve healthcare access\, quality\, and efficiency (high-value care) in resource constrained settings. He uses novel machine learning techniques to implement decision support systems and tools that facilitate more personalized care for disease management and healthcare utilization to ultimately deliver efficient\, effective and equitable therapy for chronic diseases. To test and advance these principles\, he built operational programs that are guiding—and improving—patient care in costly gastroenterology and liver disorders in under-resourced settings both domestically and abroad.\n\nThis seminar series is presented by the U-M Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety (CHEPS): Our mission is to improve the safety and quality of healthcare delivery through a multi-disciplinary\, systems-engineering approach. For the Zoom link and password and to be added to the weekly e-mail for the series\, please RSVP. For additional questions\, contact CHEPSseminar@umich.edu. Photographs and video taken at this event may be used to promote CHEPS\, College of Engineering\, and the University.
