SUMMARY:Other:Realm of the Dead
DESCRIPTION:Realm of the Dead is an installation/performance\, freely adapted from Rogério Pinto’s award-winning play\, Marília\, about his sister who died in an accident in the street outside the family home when she was three years old and he just tenth months. Comprising a solo performance and an installation that serves as a set for that performance\, Realm of the Dead is grounded in the work of the Brazilian theater artist Augusto Boal and in autoethnographic social work research and practice. These methodologies are recommended as vehicles for critical reflection\, self-healing\, personal growth\, and advocacy.\n\nThe Realm of the Dead installation comprises more than thirty suitcases\, each reflecting an aspect of Pinto’s multiple physical and spiritual journeys and representing the cemetery where Marília is buried. The performance\, directed by Erwin Maas\, also includes autobiographical material and explorations of ethnicity\, race\, gender\, class\, and other identities. The autoethnographic content of the piece has been reformatted into workshops for students at the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal/Vegetable/Mineral Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this RC Art Gallery exhibit\, Residential College and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design Professor of Art Susan Crowell presents\, among other works\, a series of wall plaques depicting endangered species. In Professor Crowell's effort to\, \"...question our interactions with the animal world and our impact upon it\,\" she has installed images of elephants and donkeys as protagonists and antagonists in political struggle\, and polar bears as victims of global warming. \n\n\"Animal/ Vegetable/Mineral presents an occasion to speak about my most compelling interests—plants and animals--within the mineral rubrics of clay\,\" she says.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Masks are required for all attendees. Vaccination is not required but highly encouraged. All attendees must complete a short questionnaire at https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in before entering East Quadrangle.\n\nSusan Crowell is Professor of Art at the University of Michigan\, where she teaches ceramics and holds a joint appointment in the Residential College and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. A Fulbright Scholar\, she studied architectural ceramics at Centro Internazionale di Ceramica in Rome and directed and taught in the University of Michigan’s Program in Florence. Prof. Crowell conducts research and exhibits her work locally\, nationally and internationally. She has presented projects and exhibitions in Canada (at Banff)\, Japan (at Shigaraki and Miyazaki)\, Italy (Rome\, Venice and Florence)\, Taiwan\, Denmark and China\, as well as in France and the United States\, and she has participated in a variety of international venues and residencies. In 2005 Crowell published I Compianti Sul Christo Morto: Lamentation Groupings in Northern Italy to illuminate the distinguished history of ceramic materials in Quattrocento devotional and didactic sculpture\, and to bring an understanding of their use and potential to contemporary ceramics practitioners. In April of 2016 Prof. Crowell exhibited her work in the conservatories of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan\, and in May of 2017\, at the Alden Dow Gardens in Midland\, MI. In 2018 she conducted residencies and research at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science in northern Michigan\, and at A.I.R. Vallauris in Vallauris\, France\, where she exhibited her work in La chapelle de la place Lisnard that October.\n \nFor ten years\, Crowell’s research and artistic practice has focused upon pollen forms and the process of pollination. Deploying her appreciation of the role of technology in revealing the natural world\, she applies the science and aesthetics of botany and apiculture toward the creation of ceramic sculpture\, using cast and hand-built forms. In doing so\, Prof. Crowell presents an expanded view of pollen within the problematics of industrialized honey production\, global commerce in apicultural products\, and genetically modified crops.. More recently\, she has created Thinning the Herd\, an installation of animal forms that addresses endangered species\, and Oppositional\, a commentary on contemporary political behavior in the United States.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium: Capuchins\, cognition\, and conservation: Introducing the Taboga Research Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Some Capuchins are notable for their relatively large brains\, complex social traditions\, and tool use. These traits are absent in some of their closest phylogenetic relatives\, making capuchins an important taxon for understanding why some primates (like humans) favored cognitive solutions to their social and ecological challenges. However\, we know surprisingly little about how capuchins use cognition in the wild. With this new project\, we focus on the use of social cognition in wild white-faced capuchins (Cebus capucinus) of Costa Rica. We use a combination of observation and playback experiments to understand both the depth (how detailed is their social knowledge?) and breadth (how far does their social knowledge extend?) within and between social groups. We take advantage of our newly established field site\, the Taboga Research Exchange (T-REX) where ~10 capuchin groups live in an isolated ‘island’ of tropical dry forest surrounded by sugar-cane farms. The self-contained nature of the forest allows us to precisely track multiple monkey groups\, while the available facilities (electricity\, internet\, endocrine laboratory) enable us to operate much like a captive laboratory with real time analysis. In addition to the capuchin research\, we are developing T-REX as the first of its kind: a net-zero field station and field school where we\, along with our colleagues from the Universidad Técnica Nacional and SEAS\, are piloting and demonstrating sustainable solutions and biological methods.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | The Cornucopian Stage: Dramas of Endless Surplus in Early Modern China
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance for this Zoom webinar here: https://myumi.ch/AxpEy\n\nThis talk takes the titular object of the play Jubaopen 聚寶盆 (Cornucopia)\, attributed to the Suzhou playwright Zhu Suchen 朱素臣 (ca. 1620–after 1701)\, as the point of departure for an exploration of the productive possibilities of early modern drama. Like the jubaopen—a magical basin that reproduces ad infinitum whatever is placed inside—the Suzhou stage poured forth strings of coin\, jars of gold\, and carts of silver. Here the experience of living through China’s “silver century\,” when the silver extracted from Japanese and New World mines flooded the Jiangnan marketplace\, metamorphosizes into a fantasy of endless accumulation. The generative capacity of the Suzhou stage was not limited to the literal appearance of treasures on stage (nor to the profits made off stage by a group of playwrights whose work is often described as “commercial”)\; rather\, the Suzhou plays show how commercial subjects and objects can be made narratively\, morally\, and socially productive. This talk argues that it is in this transformation of the stage into a self-consciously productive space\, and the transformation of authors\, actors\, and audience members into similarly productive economic subjects\, that the Suzhou plays enacted an early modern imaginary that linked the stages of Jiangnan to those in the far-flung but increasingly interconnected commercial centers of Amsterdam\, London\, Venice\, and Osaka.\n\nAriel Fox is an assistant professor of Chinese literature in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations and the Committee on Theater and Performance Studies at the University of Chicago. She received her BA in East Asian Studies from Columbia University and her PhD in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University. Her work explores the intersection of literary and economic imaginaries in late imperial China. She has recently completed a book manuscript\, “The Cornucopian Stage: Performing Commerce in Early Modern China\,” and is currently working on a project on monetary and literary forms.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Shoulda\, Coulda\, Woulda: Moving Beyond Failure and Actively Cultivating a More Equitable Academy
DESCRIPTION:Systems of higher education in the United States create differential advantage and disadvantage for the people who work and learn in them. When individuals move through these systems—as administrators\, instructors\, or learners—they make choices to participate in the perpetuation or the disruption of these inequities. While some perpetuation of inequity can be attributed to ignorance\, it is often true that individuals who do understand the harmful impacts of unjust behavior\, processes\, and structures often fail to address them. This session centers around an embodied case study depicting one man’s meditation on a personal failure and the choices he made afterward that defined his path as an educator. Through session activities\, participants will reflect on what failures of this kind indicate about the educational environments in which they occur and how such reflection might prime them to reshape the spaces in which they have responsibilities.\nIn this session\, participants will:\n\nReflect on their personal failures to act for justice.\nConsider how their lived relationship to social inequities within and outside of their educational environment shape their willingness and ability to act.\nExplore the tension between risk and responsibility when disrupting the status quo.\nPractice identifying opportunities for proactive justice work in their spheres of influence in the academy.\n\nThis workshop is designed for master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact RackhamEvents@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/E3M8v.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Africa Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The #EndSARS movement rocked Nigeria and the world in October 2020. To many\, it was unexpected\, an aberration\, and a possible spark for a new rise in youth activism in the troubled Nigerian state. Young people came out in their thousands across the country and the world to signal to the Nigerian government an end to their tolerance for state sponsored violence. However\, this came to an abrupt end with the Lekki massacre on October 20th. How do we understand the youth uprisings of 2020? Were they an anomaly\, a moment\, or the start of a long term rebellion? The #EndSARS movement is significant in understanding the deep generational divide\, historical consciousness and the loss of social movement history\, class warfare and the ebb and flow of social movements in the deeply divided country. It speaks also\, to the global impact of the #BlackLivesMatter movement\, the summer rebellions of 2020 in the wake of George Floyd and the re-emergence of Pan-Africanism and Black Internationalism in new and interesting ways\n\nR. Nanre Nafziger\n \nNanre Nafziger holds a PhD in Education Theory and Policy and Comparative and international Education from the Pennsylvania State University. Nanre’s research agenda has three areas of focus 1) decolonizing history education in the African/Black diaspora\, 2) critical studies of political education within Black student and social movements\, and 3) youth engagement in education policy and practice through Youth Participatory Action research. As an engaged and committed Black scholar and activist\, she brings interdisciplinary research and teaching expertise and experiences building social equity and justice in formal\, informal\, and community education contexts in Nigeria\, the United States\, and England. Nanre’s research contributes to debates on critical education policy studies\, decolonial approaches to education\, anti-racist pedagogy\, critical race theory\, critical youth studies\, and Black social movements.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Sub-kHz Excitation Lasers For\nQuantum Information Processing With Rydberg Atoms
DESCRIPTION:Georg A Raithel is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.\nTopic: Remy Legaie seminar\nTime: Oct 5\, 2021 03:45 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) Join Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/93856929175 Meeting ID: 938 5692 9175\nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,93856929175# US (San Jose)\n+12532158782\,\,93856929175# US (Tacoma)\nDial by your location\n\nNeutral atoms provide an excellent resource for quantum information processing\, combining the long atomic coherence times of the hyperfine ground-state with strong dipole-dipole interactions of highly excited Rydberg states for generating deterministic entanglement between qubits separated by < 10 µm [1].\n\nFor robust Rydberg excitation of atomic qubits for gate operations\, the two-photon excitation must be detuned from the intermediate excited state to avoid losses due to spontaneous emission. High fidelity gates also require narrow linewidth excitation lasers with excellent long term frequency stability. These requirements can be met using lasers stabilized to a high-finesse optical cavity\, exploiting techniques developed for lasers on state-of-the-art optical lattice clocks. Recently\, details of cavity stabilized lasers systems for Rydberg excitation of K\, Rb\, and Sr atoms have been presented\, achieving typical linewidths around 1-10 kHz.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present the construction and characterization of three continuous wave (CW) sub-kHz linewidth lasers stabilized simultaneously to an ultra-high finesse Fabry-Perot cavity made of ultra-low expansion (ULE) glass\, with tunable offset-lock frequency [2]. Furthermore\, high-resolution electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectroscopy of cold Cs Rydberg states is used to calibrate the cavity mode frequencies with respect to Rydberg transitions and determine the cavity long term drift of ∼ 1 Hz/s. These measurement are competitive against doubly-stabilized optical clocks and offer an order of magnitude improvement compared to similar cavity stabilized Rydberg laser systems. \n\n[1] M. He then held a first postdoctoral position at CNRS (Marseille\, France) in optical frequency metrology using laser cooled trapped ions. At the beginning of 2021\, he was recruited at ENS Paris-Saclay (Paris\, France) for a second postdoctoral position\, in charge of developing a new experiment using Rydberg atoms in vapor cell as radio frequency field sensor.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Professor Vonnie McLoyd\, The Ewart A.C. Thomas Collegiate Professorship in Psychology\, Inaugural Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Poverty exposes children to multiple environmental inequities that increase the risk of impaired physical health\, lower educational attainment\, mental health problems\, delinquency\, and worse outcomes as adults. Adverse outcomes are stronger when poverty occurs in early childhood or persists throughout a large portion of childhood. Experiments that test the effects of policies and programs that increase cash income and “near cash” benefits (e.g.\,nutrition assistance) suggest that income poverty itself causes negative child outcomes\, and that differences between the outcomes of poor and nonpoor children do not stem exclusively from the cluster of other disadvantages associated with poverty that may be harmful to children (e.g.\, low levels of parental education). There are numerous pathways through which poverty can influence children's development. In this lecture\, I will emphasize research that adopts a “family stress” perspective\, which posits that poverty can adversely affect children’s socioemotional development partly by increasing psychological distress and depressive symptoms in parents and in turn\, undermining the quality of parenting. Neighborhood characteristics and interpersonal factors can contribute to\, amplify\, and mitigate links in this pathway. Extensive research suggests that alleviation of poverty can foster children’s development by increasing the goods and services that parents can buy for their children and by promoting a more responsive\, less stressful environment in which more positive parent-child interactions can occur.\n\nIf you are unable to join us in person\, please click the link below to join the webinar:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96580746829\nOr One tap mobile : \n US: +16468769923\,\,96580746829# or +13017158592\,\,96580746829# \nOr Telephone:\n Dial(for higher quality\, dial a number based on your current location):\n US: +1 646 876 9923 or +1 301 715 8592 or +1 312 626 6799 or +1 669 900 6833 or +1 253 215 8782 or +1 346 248 7799 \n Canada: +1 778 907 2071 or +1 204 272 7920 or +1 438 809 7799 or +1 587 328 1099 or +1 647 374 4685 or +1 647 558 0588 \nWebinar ID: 965 8074 6829\n International numbers available: https://umich.zoom.us/u/adwC1qDIUw\n\nOr an H.323/SIP room system:\n H.323: \n 162.255.37.11 (US West)\n 162.255.36.11 (US East)\n 115.114.131.7 (India Mumbai)\n 115.114.115.7 (India Hyderabad)\n 213.19.144.110 (Amsterdam Netherlands)\n 213.244.140.110 (Germany)\n 103.122.166.55 (Australia Sydney)\n 103.122.167.55 (Australia Melbourne)\n 149.137.40.110 (Singapore)\n 64.211.144.160 (Brazil)\n 149.137.68.253 (Mexico)\n 69.174.57.160 (Canada Toronto)\n 65.39.152.160 (Canada Vancouver)\n 207.226.132.110 (Japan Tokyo)\n 149.137.24.110 (Japan Osaka)\n Meeting ID: 965 8074 6829\n SIP: 96580746829@zoomcrc.com

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:THE GROUND BREAKING: Uncovering the Tulsa Massacre
DESCRIPTION:The Tulsa race massacre of 1921 was the worst single incident of racial violence in American history. Over the course of sixteen hours\, a prospering African American community\, later known as Black Wall Street\, was looted and burned to the ground by a white mob. More than 1000 African American homes and businesses were destroyed\, while the death count remains unknown to this very day. Not only did no white person spend a day in prison for the murders\, arson\, and theft of May 31st/June 1st\, 1921\, but for more that fifty years the history of the massacre was actively suppressed. Scott Ellsworth will bring to life this American tragedy\, and the challenges it poses for all of us today.\n\nScott Ellsworth has taught in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies at UM for fourteen years. An award winning writer and historian\, he has researched and written about the Tulsa massacre over the course of more than four and half decades. His latest book on the massacre\, THE GROUND BREAKING: An American City and Its Search for Justice\, has been praised by the New York Times\, Washington Post\, and the Los Angeles Times. \"This book should be essential reading\,\" wrote Harvard law professor Kenneth Mack\, \"for anyone interested in an honest grappling with our racial past and with the task of moving forward.\"\n\nPlease Register for this event on Sessions: https://myumi.ch/88l7G\nThis is a Hybrid event
