SUMMARY:Other:Realm of the Dead
DESCRIPTION:Realm of the Dead is an installation/performance\, freely adapted from Rogério Pinto’s award-winning play\, Marília\, about his sister who died in an accident in the street outside the family home when she was three years old and he just tenth months. Comprising a solo performance and an installation that serves as a set for that performance\, Realm of the Dead is grounded in the work of the Brazilian theater artist Augusto Boal and in autoethnographic social work research and practice. These methodologies are recommended as vehicles for critical reflection\, self-healing\, personal growth\, and advocacy.\n\nThe Realm of the Dead installation comprises more than thirty suitcases\, each reflecting an aspect of Pinto’s multiple physical and spiritual journeys and representing the cemetery where Marília is buried. The performance\, directed by Erwin Maas\, also includes autobiographical material and explorations of ethnicity\, race\, gender\, class\, and other identities. The autoethnographic content of the piece has been reformatted into workshops for students at the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal/Vegetable/Mineral Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this RC Art Gallery exhibit\, Residential College and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design Professor of Art Susan Crowell presents\, among other works\, a series of wall plaques depicting endangered species. In Professor Crowell's effort to\, \"...question our interactions with the animal world and our impact upon it\,\" she has installed images of elephants and donkeys as protagonists and antagonists in political struggle\, and polar bears as victims of global warming. \n\n\"Animal/ Vegetable/Mineral presents an occasion to speak about my most compelling interests—plants and animals--within the mineral rubrics of clay\,\" she says.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Masks are required for all attendees. Vaccination is not required but highly encouraged. All attendees must complete a short questionnaire at https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in before entering East Quadrangle.\n\nSusan Crowell is Professor of Art at the University of Michigan\, where she teaches ceramics and holds a joint appointment in the Residential College and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. A Fulbright Scholar\, she studied architectural ceramics at Centro Internazionale di Ceramica in Rome and directed and taught in the University of Michigan’s Program in Florence. Prof. Crowell conducts research and exhibits her work locally\, nationally and internationally. She has presented projects and exhibitions in Canada (at Banff)\, Japan (at Shigaraki and Miyazaki)\, Italy (Rome\, Venice and Florence)\, Taiwan\, Denmark and China\, as well as in France and the United States\, and she has participated in a variety of international venues and residencies. In 2005 Crowell published I Compianti Sul Christo Morto: Lamentation Groupings in Northern Italy to illuminate the distinguished history of ceramic materials in Quattrocento devotional and didactic sculpture\, and to bring an understanding of their use and potential to contemporary ceramics practitioners. In April of 2016 Prof. Crowell exhibited her work in the conservatories of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan\, and in May of 2017\, at the Alden Dow Gardens in Midland\, MI. In 2018 she conducted residencies and research at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science in northern Michigan\, and at A.I.R. Vallauris in Vallauris\, France\, where she exhibited her work in La chapelle de la place Lisnard that October.\n \nFor ten years\, Crowell’s research and artistic practice has focused upon pollen forms and the process of pollination. Deploying her appreciation of the role of technology in revealing the natural world\, she applies the science and aesthetics of botany and apiculture toward the creation of ceramic sculpture\, using cast and hand-built forms. In doing so\, Prof. Crowell presents an expanded view of pollen within the problematics of industrialized honey production\, global commerce in apicultural products\, and genetically modified crops.. More recently\, she has created Thinning the Herd\, an installation of animal forms that addresses endangered species\, and Oppositional\, a commentary on contemporary political behavior in the United States.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Characterizing the Global Drinking Water Virome
DESCRIPTION:Bridget Hegarty\, Ph.D.\nPostdoctoral Scholar\, Civil and Environmental Engineering\n\nHosts: Celeste Alexander\nMatt Ostrowski\nThomas Schmidt\nMichigan Microbiome Project\n\nAbstract: In drinking water distribution systems\, previous research on viruses has focused on tracking and eliminating viral pathogens to limit the spread of waterborne diseases. However\, viruses may impact drinking water quality and human health in other less direct ways by influencing the proliferation of bacteria that can both lead to human disease\, as well as exacerbate water quality issues from nitrification and corrosion. Previous metagenomics studies have focused on how bacteria influence water quality\, at most identifying the presence of viral proteins or estimating the viral fraction. For this reason\, fundamental information about how viruses influence microbial populations in drinking water remains unknown. In this presentation\, I will address this gap by providing an overview of global drinking water viral assemblages using sequences mined from publicly available drinking water metagenomes. These sequences provide a first glimpse of the taxonomic and metabolic diversity of the drinking water virome\, as well as indicate the parameters shaping viral diversity. Environmental conditions\, as well as differences in sample collection and processing were found to influence the viral assemblages. Differences in water quality between distribution systems that used residual disinfectants and those that did not led to clear differences in the viral taxonomic diversity and metabolic potential of these samples. For instance\, drinking water distribution systems that used a residual disinfectant had fewer distinct viral populations (observed taxa\; Wilcoxon rank sum test p-value = 0.0003) and less even viral assemblages (Shannon index\; Wilcoxon rank sum test p-value = 0.0001). Additionally\, genes related to surviving oxidative stress were overabundant in distribution systems that used a residual disinfectant\, while genes related to nitrogen metabolism were overabundant in distribution systems without a residual disinfectant. Laying important groundwork for better understanding the impact that viruses have on the bacteria of drinking water distribution systems\, this study demonstrates that viral assembleges are diverse across drinking water systems and shaped by treatment choices\, including the use of a residual disinfectant.\n\nZoom Meeting: https://umich.zoom.us/j/92240564900

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond / Resist / Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Over the last 12-18 months\, the world has witnessed the brutal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic compounded by systemic racism as it proliferated across the US\, threatening to stifle its vibrant and diverse society. Students and youth in the US and globally have been at the forefront of social change devising models of inclusion and care for those deeply impacted by the pandemic and racial and environmental inequities. \n Stamps Gallery invited students at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to design posters and make videos that respond to the prompt: what change would you like to see in your community? Stamps students created meaningful posters and video work that will be featured in Respond/Resist/Rethink 2021: A Student Poster &amp\; Video Exhibition. \n Why posters &amp\; video?\nFor generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. \n Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nRespond / Resist / Rethink asks the UM community to come together to envision models for inclusion that are grounded in equality\, belonging\, and empathy. The work featured in the exhibition were selected through an open call by a committee comprising Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Julianna Lew\, David Chung\, Najwat Rehman\, Albert Che\, and Stamps Gallery staff.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stephanie Dinkins: On Love & Data
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is proud to present the first survey of renowned transmedia artist Stephanie Dinkins\, who creates platforms for dialogue about artificial intelligence as it intersects race\, gender\, aging\, and our future histories. \nThrough her work\, Dinkins has become a central figure nationally and internationally recognized for exposing bias and inequity within artificial intelligence systems. Weaving together art production and exhibition\, community-based workshops and public speaking all with the intention of encouraging action towards making artificial intelligence systems more inclusive\, accessible and transparent. \n In this exhibition\, Dinkins will debut new and interactive installations and workshops that build on her concept of Afro-now-ism. In this poetic manifesto-like text\, Dinkins asks her audience\, particularly from communities of color\, to not only confront the litany of violences that humans have wielded upon one another based on the institutional and social constructions of race\, caste\, class\, and gender to maintain status quo and the current systems of power - but rise above it by taking action to start building the world that they desire. \nShe writes: “Instead of waiting to reach the proverbial promised land\, also known as a time in the future that may or may not manifest in your lifetime\, Afro-now-ism is taking the leap and the risks to imagine and define oneself beyond systemic oppression... For black people in particular\, it means conceiving yourself in the space of free and expansive thought and acting from a critically integrated space\, allowing for more community-sustaining work.” \n Through her installations and workshops Stephanie Dinkins: On Love &amp\; Data develops a dialogue with the audience on the hierarchies embedded within machine learning and AI architecture and one&#039\;s individual agency in transforming the algorithms within it. The audience will explore and participate in creating a more inclusive data-based narrative of what governance of the people\, by the people and for the people can look like in an AI mediated world where care is encoded within our digital civic system.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Are students still engaged? How Georgetown University approached student survey design and analysis during the initial phase of the pandemic. – Drew Allen - JPSM MPSDS Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Drew Allen\, PhD\nAssociate Vice President\, Institutional Data Analytics – Georgetown University\nFellow\, Steinhardt Institute for Higher Education Policy – New York University\n\nAre students still engaged? How Georgetown University approached student survey design and analysis during the initial phase of the pandemic.\n\nMost colleges and universities administer multiple surveys to students\, faculty\, and staff throughout the academic year. Institutions have dedicated survey plans that call for the collection of information about the student experience\, faculty satisfaction\, cultural climate\, and alumni outcomes/perceptions (among other topics). \n\nThe shift to remote instruction in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic meant that institutions had to act swiftly to rethink survey plans and other data collection methods. New types of data were also needed by leadership to quickly understand the impact of the shift and how students\, faculty\, and staff were faring in this unprecedented time.\n\nThis presentation will explore the variety of approaches that Georgetown University took in surveying students and faculty during the pandemic. First\, the development of “pulse” surveys to measure academic engagement will be discussed\, followed by a step-by-step account of how the survey data were communicated and used. Challenges in terms of sampling\, questionnaire construction\, survey nonresponse\, and ethical use of data will be highlighted. Finally\, we will discuss how these new approaches and lessons learned are helping to drive innovation in future survey efforts at the University.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Gender\, Social Recognition\, and Political Influence
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Cesi Cruz (UCLA)\nJoin via Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/91971833625 \n\nWhat determines women’s political influence? While the literature on political engagement focuses on individual traits\, attitudes\, and participation\, we argue that how these factors translate to political influence is fundamentally a social process that requires recognition from the broader community\, with important implications for understanding women’s political engagement. Using new data on networks of political influence in Philippine villages\, we show that even after controlling for socioeconomic status or political participation\, women are still markedly less likely to be recognized as influential. Furthermore\, we show that engagement in politics through traditional means–running for office\, participating in councils\, or joining parties–are only associated with political influence for men. The determinants of influence are more complex for women: embeddedness in the community and participation in community activities are more important than traditional modes of political participation.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Social Brown Bag: Regulatory Focus Theory as a Lens to Advance Indigenous Suicide Intervention Research
DESCRIPTION:Suicide is the second leading cause of death for American Indian and Alaskan Natives (AIAN) aged 15-24\, and suicide rates among AIAN adolescents are highest of any US racial/ethnic group. To address this disparity\, researchers often partner with tribal nations and institutions to develop and test suicide prevention interventions. Importantly\, these interventions differ along the dimension of promotion-orientation (increasing and maintaining overall mental wellbeing) vs prevention-orientation (surveillance and early identification of those at highest risk). Regulatory focus theory specifies that the regulatory system motivates complex behaviors through promotion-focus (hopes and gains)\, or prevention-focus (safety and responsibility). This talk will explore results from two applications of Regulatory Focus Theory in this area: (1) A systematic review of interventions to prevent suicide in American Indian and Alaskan Native communities\, comparing prevention versus promotion focused self-regulatory approaches for fit effects and examining alignment between interventions’ regulatory focus and respective outcomes selected. (2) A secondary data analysis of associations between beliefs about suicide prevention and self-reported promotion and/or prevention actions in a primarily Alaska Native sample.

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CSAAW Seminar | Variance as a predictor of health outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Title:\nVariance as a predictor of health outcomes\n\nSecondary Title: \nUsing subject-level trajectories and residual variability to predict a cross-sectional outcome of interest\n\nVIRTUAL SEMINAR - ZOOM MEETING LINK \n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96316969456\nPasscode: 984743\n\nAbstract:\nLongitudinal biomarker data and cross-sectional outcomes are routinely collected by design in numerous modern epidemiology studies. One scientific goal is to identify prognostic predictors that may inform tailored and early intervention decisions that may improve health outcomes. For example\, estradiol (E2) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) are two key hormones that may predict changes in womens’ health as they transition through menopause. Existing methods have mainly focused on constructing predictors by modeling mean hormone trajectories. However\, the singular focus on the mean structure limits scientists’ ability to inquire about the role of subject-level biomarker variability in predicting the outcome of interest. Modeling variability as a predictor of health outcomes may also provide critical information about disease risk and health outcomes\, and is an understudied area of statistics. In this presentation\, I will describe a joint modeling framework that estimates subject-level means and variances of multiple longitudinal predictors in order to predict a cross-sectional health outcome\, enabling systematic investigation of the role of multi-marker variability in health outcomes. I will also present a simulation study of the model and show that it has excellent recovery of true model parameters and that it provides less biased and more efficient estimates\, relative to alternative approaches that either ignore subject-level differences in the variances\, or perform two-stage estimation where estimated biomarker variances are treated as observed. Finally\, I will present an application of this model to women's health data.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Exploring Some of Shakespeare’s Plays
DESCRIPTION:This study session will be a mini survey of Shakespeare’s canon. We will use Titus Andronicus\, Much Ado about Nothing and The Winter’s Tale to frame the discussion. These selections offer a view of his early\, middle and late plays with an examination of the history\, tragedy\, comedy and romance categories. Both novices and scholars of Shakespeare will be able to enjoy his works more than before our discussions. \n\nOur study group leader\, Robert Lamphear\, still teaches Shakespeare at Gulf Coast State College in Florida after retiring from colligate education in English and Humanities in Michigan. \n\nThis study group will meet on Wednesdays for four weeks beginning on October 6. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Self-Organised Localisation
DESCRIPTION:I will describe a new phenomenon in quantum cosmology: self-organised localisation. When the fundamental parameters of a theory are functions of a scalar field subject to large fluctuations during inflation\, quantum phase transitions can act as dynamical attractors. As a result\, the theory parameters are probabilistically localised around the critical value and the Universe finds itself at the edge of a phase transition. We illustrate how self-organised localisation could account for the observed near-criticality of the Higgs self-coupling\, the naturalness of the Higgs mass\, or the smallness of the cosmological constant.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Econometrics: Logical Differencing in Network Formation Models under Non-Transferable Utilities
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThis paper considers a semiparametric model of dyadic network formation under nontransferable utilities (NTU). NTU arises frequently in real-world social interactions that require bilateral consent\, but by its nature induces additive non-separability. We show how unobserved individual heterogeneity in our model can be canceled out without additive separability\, using a novel method we call logical differencing. The key idea is to construct events involving the intersection of two mutually exclusive restrictions on the unobserved heterogeneity\, based on multivariate monotonicity. We provide a consistent estimator and analyze its performance via simulation\, and apply our method to the Nyakatoke risk-sharing networks.\n\n*To join the seminar\, please contact: econometrics-seminar-requests@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CMENAS Colloquium Series. Ecologies of Empire: Ottoman Arabia\, the Indian Ocean Hajj\, and the Global Crisis of Cholera
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 CMENAS Colloquium Series theme is \"Public Health and Pandemics across the MENA: A Multidisciplinary Exhibition.\" \n\nPlease register to attend at https://myumi.ch/xmYj4\n\n About the Presentation:\n Between 1831 and 1914\, cholera spread from India to Mecca and the Hijaz on at least forty separate occasions. This talk traces the development of Ottoman and international quarantine and public health controls in the Hijaz\, Red Sea\, and Persian Gulf between 1865 and World War I. Low argues that pandemic cholera and the inter-imperial public health and travel regulations that its reign of terror spawned were foundational to the creation of the modern system of mass pilgrimage that we know today. In light of our current global crisis with the COVID-19 pandemic and its role in Saudi Arabia’s difficult decision to dramatically restrict hajj and umrah travel over the past two years\, the relevance of Mecca’s pandemic past raises urgent new questions for understanding the present and future of pilgrimage management and even wider questions of mass mobility\, travel restrictions\, and border management in both the Global North and South.\n \n About the Speaker:\n Michael Christopher Low is Assistant Professor of History. Low received his PhD from Columbia University in 2015. He is the author of Imperial Mecca: Ottoman Arabia and the Indian Ocean Hajj (Columbia University Press\, 2020). Imperial Mecca will soon be available in translation in Arabic and Turkish. Low is also the co-editor of The Subjects of Ottoman International Law (Indian University Press\, 2020). In 2020-2021\, Low was a Senior Humanities Research Fellow for the Study of the Arab World at NYU Abu Dhabi.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact Kristin Waterbury at waterbuk@umich.edu. \n\nPlease be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Fall 2021 AE200 Seminar Series: Global Civil Aviation\, Sustainability\, and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer A. Haverkamp\nGraham Family Director\, Graham Sustainability Institute\nProfessor from Practice\, Michigan Law School\nProfessor of Practice\, Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy\n\nAbstract: \nIn this guest lecture\, Professor Haverkamp will discuss how the aviation industry is addressing sustainability concerns\, and\, in particular\, its response to the flying public’s increasingly critical focus on aviation’s contribution to global climate change. She will cover the U.S. government agencies and international institutions responsible for setting environmental policies and adjudicating disputes in the civil aviation sector. She will also describe the “basket of measures” through which the international aviation industry is working to reduce its carbon footprint. In particular\, she will introduce the class to the International Civil Aviation Organization’s 2016 agreement to limit GHG emissions through a carbon offsetting scheme (an agreement she helped negotiate while at the State Department)\, and examine the agreement’s effectiveness and level of industry support. She will conclude with an assessment of how the U.S. government\, with its “all of government” approach to climate change\, is tackling the problem in the aviation sector. \n\nAbout the speaker...\nJennifer Haverkamp is the Graham Family Director of U-M’s Graham Sustainability Institute\, a professor of practice at Michigan Law School\, and a professor from practice at the Ford School of Public Policy. She also co-chaired President Schlissel’s Commission on Carbon Neutrality. Professor Haverkamp previously served as the U.S. State Department’s Ambassador and Special Representative for Environment and Water Resources\, where in 2016 she led the successful negotiations of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s landmark CORSIA agreement to control global greenhouse gas emissions and the Kigali HFC-phasedown amendment to the Montreal Protocol. Ms. Haverkamp also directed Environmental Defense Fund's International Climate Program\, served as the Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Environment and Natural Resources in the Executive Office of the President\, and held posts at the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice. She has taught at Cornell Law School\, George Washington University’s law school and Johns Hopkins graduate school\, and has served on USTR's Trade and Environment Policy Advisory Committee and a number of nonprofit boards. Ms. Haverkamp holds a J.D. from Yale Law School\, an M.A. in politics and philosophy from Oxford University (as a Rhodes Scholar) and a B.A. in biology from The College of Wooster.

Once the IDI is completed for the first time\, participants can join one of a number of group results sessions. This session focuses on the theoretical foundations of the IDI\, gives a group result of PD DEI Certificate Program participants\, and provides tools to better understand the continuum of mindsets individuals utilize as their strategy for navigating across difference.\nGroup session participants will leave with a fundamental understanding of multiple approaches to navigating across difference and with resources they can use in their organizations\, groups\, or affiliations. This session also serves as the initial step before an individual results session where you receive your personal IDI result and an accompanying intercultural development plan to help you pursue your intercultural goals.\nThis workshop is designed for master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact RackhamEvents@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/v2dxo.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Bringing together Quantum Chemistry and Physics with Ultracold Molecules
DESCRIPTION:Zoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/94692610056\n\nAdvances in quantum manipulation of molecules bring unique opportunities\, including the use of molecules to search for new physics\, harnessing molecular resources for quantum engineering\, and exploring chemical reactions in the ultra-low temperature regime. In this talk\, I will focus on the latter two topics. First\, I will introduce our effort on building single ultracold molecules with full internal and motional state control in optical tweezers for future quantum simulators and computers. This work allows us to go beyond the usual paradigm of chemical reactions that proceed via stochastic encounters between reactants\, to a single\, controlled reaction of exactly two atoms. Second\, I will summarize our work giving a detailed microscopic picture of molecules transforming from one species to another. We develop full quantum state mapping of chemical reaction product-pairs from single events\, which we use to precisely benchmark statistical theory. \n
