SUMMARY:Other:Realm of the Dead
DESCRIPTION:Realm of the Dead is an installation/performance\, freely adapted from Rogério Pinto’s award-winning play\, Marília\, about his sister who died in an accident in the street outside the family home when she was three years old and he just tenth months. Comprising a solo performance and an installation that serves as a set for that performance\, Realm of the Dead is grounded in the work of the Brazilian theater artist Augusto Boal and in autoethnographic social work research and practice. These methodologies are recommended as vehicles for critical reflection\, self-healing\, personal growth\, and advocacy.\n\nThe Realm of the Dead installation comprises more than thirty suitcases\, each reflecting an aspect of Pinto’s multiple physical and spiritual journeys and representing the cemetery where Marília is buried. The performance\, directed by Erwin Maas\, also includes autobiographical material and explorations of ethnicity\, race\, gender\, class\, and other identities. The autoethnographic content of the piece has been reformatted into workshops for students at the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal/Vegetable/Mineral Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this RC Art Gallery exhibit\, Residential College and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design Professor of Art Susan Crowell presents\, among other works\, a series of wall plaques depicting endangered species. In Professor Crowell's effort to\, \"...question our interactions with the animal world and our impact upon it\,\" she has installed images of elephants and donkeys as protagonists and antagonists in political struggle\, and polar bears as victims of global warming. \n\n\"Animal/ Vegetable/Mineral presents an occasion to speak about my most compelling interests—plants and animals--within the mineral rubrics of clay\,\" she says.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Masks are required for all attendees. Vaccination is not required but highly encouraged. All attendees must complete a short questionnaire at https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in before entering East Quadrangle.\n\nSusan Crowell is Professor of Art at the University of Michigan\, where she teaches ceramics and holds a joint appointment in the Residential College and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. A Fulbright Scholar\, she studied architectural ceramics at Centro Internazionale di Ceramica in Rome and directed and taught in the University of Michigan’s Program in Florence. Prof. Crowell conducts research and exhibits her work locally\, nationally and internationally. She has presented projects and exhibitions in Canada (at Banff)\, Japan (at Shigaraki and Miyazaki)\, Italy (Rome\, Venice and Florence)\, Taiwan\, Denmark and China\, as well as in France and the United States\, and she has participated in a variety of international venues and residencies. In 2005 Crowell published I Compianti Sul Christo Morto: Lamentation Groupings in Northern Italy to illuminate the distinguished history of ceramic materials in Quattrocento devotional and didactic sculpture\, and to bring an understanding of their use and potential to contemporary ceramics practitioners. In April of 2016 Prof. Crowell exhibited her work in the conservatories of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan\, and in May of 2017\, at the Alden Dow Gardens in Midland\, MI. In 2018 she conducted residencies and research at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science in northern Michigan\, and at A.I.R. Vallauris in Vallauris\, France\, where she exhibited her work in La chapelle de la place Lisnard that October.\n \nFor ten years\, Crowell’s research and artistic practice has focused upon pollen forms and the process of pollination. Deploying her appreciation of the role of technology in revealing the natural world\, she applies the science and aesthetics of botany and apiculture toward the creation of ceramic sculpture\, using cast and hand-built forms. In doing so\, Prof. Crowell presents an expanded view of pollen within the problematics of industrialized honey production\, global commerce in apicultural products\, and genetically modified crops.. More recently\, she has created Thinning the Herd\, an installation of animal forms that addresses endangered species\, and Oppositional\, a commentary on contemporary political behavior in the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966
DESCRIPTION:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966 brings to light the collection of house catalogs in the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library’s Special Collections. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest\, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes\, such as\, the Michigan house catalog industry\, changing architectural styles\, the business of selling homes\, societal and cultural implications\, and domestic technologies. We hope the exhibit is not simply a nostalgic view back\, but raises awareness of our domestic surroundings today and compels us to ask questions as we look to the future.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Clinical Brown Bag: Co-Occurrence of Food Addiction\, High-Risk Substance Use\, and Parental History of High-Risk Alcohol Use: Evidence for an Addictive-Like Eating Phenotype
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nAn ongoing debate surrounds the existence of a phenotype for addiction to rewarding\, highly processed (HP) food (commonly referred to as food addiction). The identification of shared risk factors for and high rates of co-occurrence between gambling and high-risk substance use was foundational to the recategorization of gambling as an addiction. Investigating shared risk factors such as family history of high-risk substance use and co-occurrence between food addiction and high-risk substance use may be an important area of research for informing whether this eating phenotype is consistent with an addictive model. In this study (n=357)\, we investigate rates of co-occurrence among food addiction\, high-risk substance use (i.e.\, alcohol\, cannabis\, cigarettes\, nicotine vaping)\, parental history of high-risk alcohol use\, and obesity. Modified Poisson regression was used to calculate risk ratios unadjusted and adjusted for socio demographic covariates. Results of the current study indicated that risk of food addiction was higher in participants with high-risk alcohol use\, cannabis use\, smoking\, vaping\, and parental history of high-risk alcohol use. Obesity\, in contrast\, was not significantly associated with high-risk substance use and parental history of high-risk alcohol use indicating that food addiction and obesity are distinct phenotypes. Findings from this study support the conceptualization of food addiction as an addictive disorder and suggest that inclusion of food addiction as an addictive disorder in diagnostic frameworks is an important area for future consideration. This talk will include further discussion of conclusions from this study\, including strengths and weaknesses of the current project\, and future directions for work on this and related topics.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:DEI Summit 2021 Community Assembly & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The community assembly will include brief remarks from campus leadership\, including President Mark Schlissel\, Provost Susan Collins\, and Vice Provost and Chief Diversity Officer Robert Sellers.\n\nThis year’s featured keynote speaker is Journalist\, Entrepreneur and Television Host\, Soledad O’Brien.\n\nFollowing the keynote address\, a roundtable conversation will include panelist Valarie Kaur\, with additional panelists to be announced soon.\nThis year’s summit provides a time and space for the campus community to come together to discuss structural racism within the academy and beyond\, and ways we might address and dismantle those structures.\n\nThe past five years have yielded experience and data that allows us to sharpen our approach and act with increased precision and skill. The parallel pandemics of COVID-19 and structural racism have also synergized to create a moment in our nation’s history where we must decide if our corresponding actions will be transformative or repetitive of the past. Now more than ever\, we must simultaneously challenge our current reality and innovate to create what our future will be.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CREES/Ford U.S.-Russia Future Leaders Professional Development Workshop. U.S.-Russian Strategic Stability Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:This is an in-person event for U-M students only. This event will not be recorded or livestreamed. Registration for this event is now closed.\n\nAfter their meeting in Geneva on June 16\, U.S. President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a Joint Statement announcing the launch of “an integrated bilateral Strategic Stability Dialogue in the near future that will be deliberate and robust.” The Strategic Stability Dialogue offers an opportunity for both sides to examine—and possibly reshape—the fundamentals of the bilateral relationship. High-level dialogue and even working-level contacts have atrophied in recent years. The two sides have not had meaningful discussions on fundamental issues such as arms control\, cyber security\, interference in domestic politics\, “red-lines” in domestic and international behavior\, and other “rules of the game.” Nor have they engaged in discussions of such positive efforts as cultural connections\, student exchanges\, or collaborative scientific research. The U.S.-Russia relationship needs to be updated for the 21st century. Each side needs to examine its national interests and determine how the bilateral relationship reinforces or undermines them—and how both sides can work together to defend and advance their interests. The goal of any negotiation is to find outcomes that both sides can consider a win.\n\nPrior to the workshop\, students will receive a small packet of readings on precedents for the Strategic Stability Dialogue and current issues in U.S.-Russian relations. During the workshop\, students will break into small groups\, each tasked with determining U.S. preferences for the basic structure of the Strategic Stability Dialogue\, its conduct\, and its mandate and agenda (i.e.\, the substantive issues it will address).\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral and Experimental Economics (SBEE) Seminar: Nastiness in Groups
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: This paper provides evidence showing that people are more prone to engage in nasty behavior\, malevolently causing financial harm to other people at own costs\, when they make decisions on behalf of a group rather than when making choices individually on their own. We establish this behavioral regularity in four large-scale experiments among adolescents\, university students and a nationally representative sample of adults (N = 7\,426). We test several potential mechanisms\, and the results suggest that the “destructiveness shift” in groups is driven by lower perception of individual responsibility\, in line with self-signaling models.\n\n(To attend this online event\, please complete the form to receive email instructions and announcements for this and future SBEE Seminars.)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Cognitive Science Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Psychology graduate student Soo Ryu and Weinberg Institute Director Rick Lewis will present on transformers as integrative psycholinguistic models.\n\nABSTRACT\n\nTransformers as integrative psycholinguistic models that combine expectation-based and memory-based accounts\n\nTransformers are neural network attention-based architectures that represent the state of the art in natural language processing—completely transforming the field in less than two years\, and enabling qualitative advances across multiple NL tasks. In this talk\, we will describe an unexpected dividend for psycholinguistics. We show that Transformers provide a theoretical integration of two prominent classes of theories in sentence processing: expectation-based (surprisal) and memory-based (specifically\, cue-based retrieval) theories. We first explain how and why Transformers can serve this integrative theoretical role\, providing visualizations and analyses that show the learned internal attention-patterns in Transformers correspond to memory retrieval patterns expected in cue-based interference models of parsing. We then show that Transformers provide accounts of several interesting sentence processing phenomena that have previously resisted theoretically coherent surprisal or memory-based accounts. We conclude with a novel finding of attention-derived entropy effects in a large scale eye-tracking corpus.\n\nFor Zoom access information\, please email\ncogsci-seminar-requests@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | The DES Year-3 Cosmic Shear Results
DESCRIPTION:The Dark Energy Survey (DES) has recently completed the blinded analysis of its first 3 years of data. We have obtained cosmological constraints from a powerful weak lensing data set of more than 100 million galaxies spanning an effective area of over 4000 square degrees. In this talk\, I will present the constraints on the lensing amplitude parameter S8 that come from cosmic shear correlations in DES Y3. I will describe what the DES Y3 results add to our understanding of the apparent tension in S8 between low-redshift weak lensing constraints and those inferred via the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). I will also describe our approach to mitigating the main modeling/astrophysical systematics of cosmic shear\, namely baryons and intrinsic alignments (IA)\, and what our data says about the IA signal under a Bayesian model selection method. I will finally comment on a novel detection of 3-point shear correlations and what to expect from DES Y6.\n

SUMMARY:Other:Integrative structural biology of telomerase
DESCRIPTION:Telomerase is a unique RNA-containing reverse transcriptase that synthesizes the 3’-end of\ntelomeres. It is a highly regulated determinant of tumorigenesis\, cellular aging\, and stem cell\nrenewal. All telomerases contain a catalytic core comprising telomerase reverse transcriptase\n(TERT) and telomerase RNA (TER)\, along with other proteins involved in biogenesis\, assembly\,\nand activation. TER has an integral template complementary to ~1.5 telomere repeats used by\nTERT to repetitively synthesize the telomere repeat (TTGGGG in Tetrahymena and TTAGGG in\nhuman)\, but this template alone is insufficient for activity with TERT. Our interest in telomeres\nand telomerase began in the 1990’s when we studied the structure of telomeric repeat\nsequences\, using NMR to determine the first G-quadruplex structures. For the past decade\, we\nhave been using an integrative structural biology approach combining NMR\, X-ray\ncrystallography\, and electron microscopy to study the structure and function of Tetrahymena\nand human telomerase. I will discuss how our NMR studies of telomerase RNA structure and\ndynamics\, X-ray crystal structures of protein-TER complexes\, and cryo electron microscopy of\nthe holoenzyme have together helped reveal the structure\, function\, and interactions of this\nremarkable enzyme.\nJuli Feigon (University of California)

Throughout their performance\, voices are paired with an ever-changing amalgamation of acoustic and slide guitar\, keys\, upright bass\, harmonica\, and an array of vocal techniques creating an engaging and often emotionally moving live show.\n\nTheir music delves deeply into themes of the human experience: hopeful love\, honest self-reflection\, and pursuits of social justice.
