SUMMARY:Other:Realm of the Dead
DESCRIPTION:Realm of the Dead is an installation/performance\, freely adapted from Rogério Pinto’s award-winning play\, Marília\, about his sister who died in an accident in the street outside the family home when she was three years old and he just tenth months. Comprising a solo performance and an installation that serves as a set for that performance\, Realm of the Dead is grounded in the work of the Brazilian theater artist Augusto Boal and in autoethnographic social work research and practice. These methodologies are recommended as vehicles for critical reflection\, self-healing\, personal growth\, and advocacy.\n\nThe Realm of the Dead installation comprises more than thirty suitcases\, each reflecting an aspect of Pinto’s multiple physical and spiritual journeys and representing the cemetery where Marília is buried. The performance\, directed by Erwin Maas\, also includes autobiographical material and explorations of ethnicity\, race\, gender\, class\, and other identities. The autoethnographic content of the piece has been reformatted into workshops for students at the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal/Vegetable/Mineral Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this RC Art Gallery exhibit\, Residential College and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design Professor of Art Susan Crowell presents\, among other works\, a series of wall plaques depicting endangered species. In Professor Crowell's effort to\, \"...question our interactions with the animal world and our impact upon it\,\" she has installed images of elephants and donkeys as protagonists and antagonists in political struggle\, and polar bears as victims of global warming. \n\n\"Animal/ Vegetable/Mineral presents an occasion to speak about my most compelling interests—plants and animals--within the mineral rubrics of clay\,\" she says.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Masks are required for all attendees. Vaccination is not required but highly encouraged. All attendees must complete a short questionnaire at https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in before entering East Quadrangle.\n\nSusan Crowell is Professor of Art at the University of Michigan\, where she teaches ceramics and holds a joint appointment in the Residential College and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. A Fulbright Scholar\, she studied architectural ceramics at Centro Internazionale di Ceramica in Rome and directed and taught in the University of Michigan’s Program in Florence. Prof. Crowell conducts research and exhibits her work locally\, nationally and internationally. She has presented projects and exhibitions in Canada (at Banff)\, Japan (at Shigaraki and Miyazaki)\, Italy (Rome\, Venice and Florence)\, Taiwan\, Denmark and China\, as well as in France and the United States\, and she has participated in a variety of international venues and residencies. In 2005 Crowell published I Compianti Sul Christo Morto: Lamentation Groupings in Northern Italy to illuminate the distinguished history of ceramic materials in Quattrocento devotional and didactic sculpture\, and to bring an understanding of their use and potential to contemporary ceramics practitioners. In April of 2016 Prof. Crowell exhibited her work in the conservatories of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan\, and in May of 2017\, at the Alden Dow Gardens in Midland\, MI. In 2018 she conducted residencies and research at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science in northern Michigan\, and at A.I.R. Vallauris in Vallauris\, France\, where she exhibited her work in La chapelle de la place Lisnard that October.\n \nFor ten years\, Crowell’s research and artistic practice has focused upon pollen forms and the process of pollination. Deploying her appreciation of the role of technology in revealing the natural world\, she applies the science and aesthetics of botany and apiculture toward the creation of ceramic sculpture\, using cast and hand-built forms. In doing so\, Prof. Crowell presents an expanded view of pollen within the problematics of industrialized honey production\, global commerce in apicultural products\, and genetically modified crops.. More recently\, she has created Thinning the Herd\, an installation of animal forms that addresses endangered species\, and Oppositional\, a commentary on contemporary political behavior in the United States.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CSCS Seminar | Dynamical system models for politics and voting
DESCRIPTION:ZOOM MEETING https://umich.zoom.us/j/96616169868 Passcode: CSCS\n\nABSTRACT: The recent US political landscape brings many puzzling questions. For example\, the two major parties have become increasingly polarized since the 1960s\, while most voters maintained moderate policy positions. What can lead to the disconnect between the parties and the voters? Also\, a sizable proportion\, often the majority\, of the voting population is uninformed about facts relevant to their voting decisions\, such as policies proposed by the candidates. Can such a voting body deliver good collective decisions? In this talk\, I give an overview of research projects that address these complex issues\, which leverage dynamical-system models\, empirical findings in psychology\, and data analysis. This approach takes into account the impact of multiple\, complex\, and often non-linear factors\, and aims to give a coherent understanding of complex social phenomena.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Elliot S. Valenstein Distinguished Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Talk title: Detecting covert cognitive states from neural population recordings in prefrontal cortex\n\nAbstract: The neural mechanisms underlying decision-making are typically examined by statistical analysis of large numbers of trials from sequentially recorded single neurons. Averaging across sequential recordings\, however\, obscures important aspects of decision-making such as 'changes of mind' (CoM) that occur at variable times on different trials. I will show that the covert decision variables (DV) can be tracked dynamically on single behavioral trials via simultaneous recording of large neural populations in prefrontal cortex. Vacillations of the neural DV\, in turn\, identify candidate CoM in monkeys\, which closely match the known properties of human CoM. Thus simultaneous population recordings can provide insight into transient\, internal cognitive states that are otherwise undetectable.\n\n*Note: This talk will be available via Zoom livestream and will also be recorded.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS 60th Anniversary Alumni Lecture Series | Publics\, Scientists and the State: Mapping the Global Human Genome Editing Controversy
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance for this Zoom webinar here: https://myumi.ch/XedWy\n\nLiterature on scientific controversies has inadequately attended to the impact of globalization and\, more specifically\, the emergence of China as a leader in scientific research. To bridge this gap in the literature\, Professor Lei develops a theoretical framework to analyse global scientific controversies surrounding research in China. Empirically\, her talk will discuss the human genome editing controversy surrounding research conducted by scientists in China between 2015 and 2019. It shows how elite scientists negotiated expert– public relationships within and across the national and transnational expert spheres\, how unexpected disruption at the nexus of the four spheres disrupted expert–public relationships as envisioned by elite experts\, and how the Chinese state intervened to redraw the boundary between openness and secrecy at both national and transnational levels.\n \n Ya-Wen Lei is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Harvard University\, and is affiliated with the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. She is the author of \"The Contentious Public Sphere: Law\, Media and Authoritarian Rule in China\" (Princeton University Press\, 2018). Her articles have appeared in American Journal of Sociology\, American Sociological Review\, Law & Society Review\, Socius\, Political Communication\, and Work\, Employment and Society.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Altman at 50
DESCRIPTION:Join Mavericks and Makers Collection Curator Phil Hallman for a photographic journey through Robert Altman’s films. M*A*S*H propelled Altman to the top of noted film directors\, and over the next four decades he worked with many leading actors\, releasing nearly 40 films that poked\, prodded\, and punched at U.S. culture\, particularly satirizing its institutions. \n\nAltman was noted for subverting genres and using overlapping dialogue. His method of storytelling was so unique that the Oxford English Dictionary included the term “Altmanesque\" in their 2018 edition.\n\nThis presentation will draw from the Special Collections Research Center’s Robert Altman collection — a massive array of some 700 boxes containing documents\, scripts\, photos\, props\, costumes\, and paraphernalia related to the enormously influential career of a cinematic titan. This is one in a series of U-M Library's Special Collections After Hours events.\n\nPlease register to receive a Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/jxAYK

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Searching for New Fundamental Physics with Polyatomic Molecules
DESCRIPTION:Join Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/99745863111\nMeeting ID: 997 4586 3111\nOne tap mobile\n+13462487799\,\,99745863111# US (Houston)\n+16468769923\,\,99745863111# US (New York)\n\nThe fact that the universe is made entirely out of matter\, and contains no free anti-matter\, has no physical explanation. The unknown process that created matter in the universe must violate a number of fundamental symmetries\, including those that forbid the existence of certain electromagnetic moments of fundamental particles whose signatures are amplified by the large internal fields in polar molecules. We discuss spectroscopic and theoretical investigations into polyatomic molecules that uniquely combine multiple desirable features for precision measurement\, such as high polarizability through symmetry-lowering mechanical motions\, novel electronic and bonding structures\, laser cooling\, and exotic nuclei.\n

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Detroit students and homelessness
DESCRIPTION:What are some programs that are working well? What do parents and students affected by housing insecurity want districts to know?\n\nAbout this event:\nAs students settle into their Detroit classrooms this autumn\, many are carrying with them anxiety\, trauma\, and grief from the past year of pandemic living. And anywhere between 7\,000 and 14\,000 students are also facing housing insecurity\, according to U-M researchers. That count is vastly higher than what Detroit schools have previously estimated\, an issue exacerbated by the pandemic.\n\nThe stakes are now higher than ever to identify and better serve students experiencing homelessness\, and Detroit isn’t alone in its struggles. During the pandemic\, school districts across the country have reported drops in the number of homeless students — a result\, many advocates say\, of how hard it’s been to reach students who don’t have a stable place to live when school is remote.\n\nWhat can be done to quickly find and serve these students in Detroit this fall? What are some programs that are working well? What do parents and students affected by housing insecurity want districts to know? Join Chalkbeat Detroit and the University of Michigan Poverty Solutions from 4-5 p.m. ET on Tuesday\, Oct. 12 to dig into these important issues.\n\nPanelists include:\n- Jennifer Erb-Downward\, senior research associate at Poverty Solutions at U-M\n- Courtney Smith\, founder and CEO of the Detroit Phoenix Center\n- Azaria Terrell\, a 17-year-old high school senior\n- Iranetta Wright\, deputy superintendent of schools at Detroit Public Schools Community District\n- Terrence George\, superintendent at Covenant House Academies\n- Lori Higgins\, Chalkbeat Detroit bureau chief and moderator \n\nRSVP to receive the Zoom Webinar information and submit your questions for our panel.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Functional MRI 2021-22 Speaker Series with Galit Pelled\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \n\nMy research is dedicated to neuro-performance: how to increase motor and cognitive capabilities and new strategies to restore them after injury. In my lab we ask if there are ways to capitalize on non-invasive brain stimulation technologies and genetically-based neuromodulation to achieve motor and cognitive functions faster\, or perhaps even get to a level that exceeds traditional training approaches. We are working with rodents and large animal models of peripheral nerve injury and traumatic brain injury. We are using multidimensional measurements including behavioral tests\, gait and motion testing\, electrophysiology\, wearable sensors\, and neuroimaging to gain a holistic understanding on neuro-performance. We are also studying neural circuits associated with octopus arm movement with the goal of developing new octopus-inspired prosthetics.\n\nYou can attend in person: 4 p.m. School of Education Building\, room 1202\nYou can attend via Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98675480632 Passcode: 267625

SUMMARY:Other:Synthetic strategies toward fluorosulfurylation of organic molecules and sulfur-fluoride exchange (SuFEx)
DESCRIPTION:Sulfur-fluoride exchange (SuFEx) chemistry is emerging as a promising synthetic tool in chemical biology\, material science\, and synthetic chemistry. In synthesis\, sulfur(VI) fluorides show unique promise as synthons in organic chemistry due their stability versus other sulfur(VI) halogen analogues. Key to the adoption of SuFEx chemistry is the development of efficient modes to synthesize and react sulfur(VI) fluorides. Research initiatives employing group 2\, and transition-metal chemistry toward the synthesis of sulfonyl fluorides via fluorosulfurylation – the installation of a SO2F group – will be described. New SuFEx methods that react a broad set of S(VI) fluorides with carbon\, oxygen\, and nitrogen-based nucleophiles towards structurally diverse S(VI) compounds will also be presented.\nNicholas Ball (Pomona College)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Detroit's Black Power Murals as Public Art
DESCRIPTION:The Art Gallery\, School of Art and Design at Eastern Michigan University is pleased to announce a lecture titled \"Detroit's Black Power Murals as Public Art\,\" by Rebecca Zurier\, Associate Professor\, History of Art\, University of Michigan\, The lecture will take place on Tuesday\, October 12 from 6-7 pm in EMU’s Halle Library Auditorium. The lecture is held in conjunction with the exhibition Harold Neal and Detroit African American Artists: 1945 through the Black Arts Movement at the EMU Art Gallery from Monday\, September 13 through Wednesday\, October 20\, 2021. Halle Library is located at 955 W Circle Dr\, Ypsilanti\, MI 48197.\n\nInspiring in their time but not well-enough known today\, Detroit’s Black Power murals—painted a year after\, and in response to the urban uprising of 1967-- were some of the first to move the artistic ideals of the Black Arts movement into public space. Created by Chicago artists with the cooperation of Detroit painters and poets\, they combined portraits of contemporary African-American “he-roes and she-roes” with historical scenes and the images of leaders of African anti-colonial movements\, juxtaposed with everyman figures that spoke to viewers in the present at street level.\n\nThis talk explores the way the murals functioned amidst Detroit’s racial geography in two ways: as an effort to enlist the nationalist ideas of the Black Arts movement in fostering creative identity and pride through images of African-American achievement and to generate spatially a “Black counterpublic sphere.” Their iconography offered an alternative or counter- history that encouraged Black Detroiters to imagine their place in a new version of the city.\n\nDr. Zurier’s teaching and research focus on the Art of the United States with special interests in urban studies\, political art and questions of realism and representation. Her book Picturing the City: Urban Vision and the Ashcan School won the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Charles Eldredge Prize. At the University of Michigan\, Dr. Zurier teaches a seminar titled \"Made in Detroit: A History of Art and Culture in the Motor City.\"\n\nThis lecture part of the Detroit theme year\, organized by EMU’s College of Arts and Sciences. For more information and list of events\, go to tiny.emich.edu/detroit\n\nFor more information\, contact curator Julia R. SUMMARY:Performance:Willie Watson
DESCRIPTION:*By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.*\n\nIn the exploding world of acoustic music\, Willie Watson hardly needs an introduction. During his decade-plus tenure with Old Crow Medicine Show\, Willie’s driving rhythm guitar\, transcendent lead vocals and pure tenor were an essential part of the band’s success (over 600\,000 records sold\, not to mention the platinum-selling single \"Wagon Wheel\")\, but nowhere in OCMS’s catalog does his instrumental artistry and vocal prowess shine through as in his solo incarnation. Reaching back for inspiration to such artists as Utah Phillips\, Leadbelly\, and even the 1930s folk-country crossover artist Bascom Lamar Lunsford\, Willie reinterprets and gives new life to a vast catalog of traditional songs that fit seamlessly beside self-penned classics cut from the very same cloth\, creating a rich new patchwork of Americana. He comes to The Ark hot on the heels of his acting debut in the Netflix film \"The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.\"
