SUMMARY:Other:Realm of the Dead
DESCRIPTION:Realm of the Dead is an installation/performance\, freely adapted from Rogério Pinto’s award-winning play\, Marília\, about his sister who died in an accident in the street outside the family home when she was three years old and he just tenth months. Comprising a solo performance and an installation that serves as a set for that performance\, Realm of the Dead is grounded in the work of the Brazilian theater artist Augusto Boal and in autoethnographic social work research and practice. These methodologies are recommended as vehicles for critical reflection\, self-healing\, personal growth\, and advocacy.\n\nThe Realm of the Dead installation comprises more than thirty suitcases\, each reflecting an aspect of Pinto’s multiple physical and spiritual journeys and representing the cemetery where Marília is buried. The performance\, directed by Erwin Maas\, also includes autobiographical material and explorations of ethnicity\, race\, gender\, class\, and other identities. The autoethnographic content of the piece has been reformatted into workshops for students at the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal/Vegetable/Mineral Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this RC Art Gallery exhibit\, Residential College and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design Professor of Art Susan Crowell presents\, among other works\, a series of wall plaques depicting endangered species. In Professor Crowell's effort to\, \"...question our interactions with the animal world and our impact upon it\,\" she has installed images of elephants and donkeys as protagonists and antagonists in political struggle\, and polar bears as victims of global warming. \n\n\"Animal/ Vegetable/Mineral presents an occasion to speak about my most compelling interests—plants and animals--within the mineral rubrics of clay\,\" she says.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Masks are required for all attendees. Vaccination is not required but highly encouraged. All attendees must complete a short questionnaire at https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in before entering East Quadrangle.\n\nSusan Crowell is Professor of Art at the University of Michigan\, where she teaches ceramics and holds a joint appointment in the Residential College and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. A Fulbright Scholar\, she studied architectural ceramics at Centro Internazionale di Ceramica in Rome and directed and taught in the University of Michigan’s Program in Florence. Prof. Crowell conducts research and exhibits her work locally\, nationally and internationally. She has presented projects and exhibitions in Canada (at Banff)\, Japan (at Shigaraki and Miyazaki)\, Italy (Rome\, Venice and Florence)\, Taiwan\, Denmark and China\, as well as in France and the United States\, and she has participated in a variety of international venues and residencies. In 2005 Crowell published I Compianti Sul Christo Morto: Lamentation Groupings in Northern Italy to illuminate the distinguished history of ceramic materials in Quattrocento devotional and didactic sculpture\, and to bring an understanding of their use and potential to contemporary ceramics practitioners. In April of 2016 Prof. Crowell exhibited her work in the conservatories of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan\, and in May of 2017\, at the Alden Dow Gardens in Midland\, MI. In 2018 she conducted residencies and research at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science in northern Michigan\, and at A.I.R. Vallauris in Vallauris\, France\, where she exhibited her work in La chapelle de la place Lisnard that October.\n \nFor ten years\, Crowell’s research and artistic practice has focused upon pollen forms and the process of pollination. Deploying her appreciation of the role of technology in revealing the natural world\, she applies the science and aesthetics of botany and apiculture toward the creation of ceramic sculpture\, using cast and hand-built forms. In doing so\, Prof. Crowell presents an expanded view of pollen within the problematics of industrialized honey production\, global commerce in apicultural products\, and genetically modified crops.. More recently\, she has created Thinning the Herd\, an installation of animal forms that addresses endangered species\, and Oppositional\, a commentary on contemporary political behavior in the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Respond / Resist / Rethink: A Stamps Student Poster & Video Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Over the last 12-18 months\, the world has witnessed the brutal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic compounded by systemic racism as it proliferated across the US\, threatening to stifle its vibrant and diverse society. Students and youth in the US and globally have been at the forefront of social change devising models of inclusion and care for those deeply impacted by the pandemic and racial and environmental inequities. \n Stamps Gallery invited students at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design to design posters and make videos that respond to the prompt: what change would you like to see in your community? Stamps students created meaningful posters and video work that will be featured in Respond/Resist/Rethink 2021: A Student Poster &amp\; Video Exhibition. \n Why posters &amp\; video?\nFor generations\, posters have served as an effective tool to circulate ideas and messages to the public. Visually striking\, and designed to draw attention from passersby\, posters can be conversation starters\, invite people to pause\, reflect\, spread the word\, get involved. They have been a powerful medium for many conceptual artists and graphic designers to create powerful images and messages that could respond to immediate issues and be distributed widely. \n Similarly\, video art was another exciting immediate medium for conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s as the technology became more accessible to the masses. Video art provided an alternative to the dominant broadcasting corporations. Artists made experimental films\, recorded performances\, and first-person narratives that were then exhibited and screened at galleries\, museums\, and events. Posters and videos continue to be salient features in the 21st Century to respond to urgent issues and questions facing the present moment. \nRespond / Resist / Rethink asks the UM community to come together to envision models for inclusion that are grounded in equality\, belonging\, and empathy. The work featured in the exhibition were selected through an open call by a committee comprising Stamps faculty\, students\, and staff including Julianna Lew\, David Chung\, Najwat Rehman\, Albert Che\, and Stamps Gallery staff.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stephanie Dinkins: On Love & Data
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is proud to present the first survey of renowned transmedia artist Stephanie Dinkins\, who creates platforms for dialogue about artificial intelligence as it intersects race\, gender\, aging\, and our future histories. \nThrough her work\, Dinkins has become a central figure nationally and internationally recognized for exposing bias and inequity within artificial intelligence systems. Weaving together art production and exhibition\, community-based workshops and public speaking all with the intention of encouraging action towards making artificial intelligence systems more inclusive\, accessible and transparent. \n In this exhibition\, Dinkins will debut new and interactive installations and workshops that build on her concept of Afro-now-ism. In this poetic manifesto-like text\, Dinkins asks her audience\, particularly from communities of color\, to not only confront the litany of violences that humans have wielded upon one another based on the institutional and social constructions of race\, caste\, class\, and gender to maintain status quo and the current systems of power - but rise above it by taking action to start building the world that they desire. \nShe writes: “Instead of waiting to reach the proverbial promised land\, also known as a time in the future that may or may not manifest in your lifetime\, Afro-now-ism is taking the leap and the risks to imagine and define oneself beyond systemic oppression... For black people in particular\, it means conceiving yourself in the space of free and expansive thought and acting from a critically integrated space\, allowing for more community-sustaining work.” \n Through her installations and workshops Stephanie Dinkins: On Love &amp\; Data develops a dialogue with the audience on the hierarchies embedded within machine learning and AI architecture and one&#039\;s individual agency in transforming the algorithms within it. The audience will explore and participate in creating a more inclusive data-based narrative of what governance of the people\, by the people and for the people can look like in an AI mediated world where care is encoded within our digital civic system.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Anti-Racism Research and Scholarship for Action
DESCRIPTION:Research and scholarship have long informed efforts to dismantle systemic racism. The racial reckoning sparked during 2020 was historic in the widespread acknowledgement of pervasive structural racism and resulting disparate inequities and injustices impacting minoritized communities and communities of color in the US. Institutions across the nation have expressed commitments to address racism in their organizations. The question now is how to move from intention to action and how to enact structural change that is transformational and sustainable.\n\nIn this session\, we draw on the collective expertise and experience of University of Michigan scholars who have dedicated their careers to applying their scholarship to advance anti-racism and facilitate systemic change. Join us for an interdisciplinary conversation as we discuss how research and practice efforts around anti-racism are manifested in their respective fields\, what it means to conduct research on race and racism in the current socio-political context\, and the lessons these scholars have learned about engaging anti-racism in the academy.\n\nModerated by Dr. Tabbye Chavous\, NCID Director\, Associate Dean for Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion in the College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\; and Professor of Education and Psychology.\nPanelists include:\n\nKetra Armstrong\, University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor of Sport Management\; Director of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion in the School of Kinesiology\; and Director of the Center for Race and Ethnicity in Sport\nStephanie Fryberg\, University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor of Psychology\nLouise Toppin\, Professor of Voice in the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\nSusan Woolford\, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Michigan Medicine and Co-Director of the Healthy Flint Research Coordinating Center\n \nThis event is hosted by National Center for Institutional Diversity’s Anti-Racism Collaborative\, a strategic space that engages the University of Michigan community around research and scholarship focused on racial inequality\, racial justice\, and anti-racist praxis.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. Does Culture Matter? Complexity\, Creativity\, and Social Change in the Kyrgyz Republic
DESCRIPTION:Although culture is one of American anthropology’s signature analytical concepts\, interest in the culture concept has waned in recent decades. In this talk\, Professor Borbieva will discuss this phenomenon and its impact on the development projects she observed in Central Asia. Drawing on four years she worked in Kyrgyzstan as a development professional and ethnographer\, she argues that the lack of cultural anthropologists’ influence on the topic of culture has\, at least in the development sector\, empowered simplistic and ethnocentric (and familiar) discourses about diversity and social change. To effectively counteract these discourses\, however\, cultural anthropologists must update their understanding of culture. This can be done by incorporating insights from the latest research in biological anthropology and systems theory. If today’s popular usage of culture justifies one-size-fits-all visions of human well-being\, a reinvigorated understanding of culture will be able to inform more constructive development interventions in Central Asia and beyond.\n \nNoor O’Neill Borbieva is professor of anthropology at Purdue University Fort Wayne. Her research on gender\, religious change\, and the development sector in the former Soviet Union has been published in numerous journals\, including *Slavic Review*\, *Central Asian Survey*\, and *Anthropological Quarterly*. Her book\, *Visions of Development in Central Asia: Revitalizing the Culture Concept*\, was published by Lexington Books in 2019.\n \nThis is an in-person event for U-M students\, faculty\, and staff only. You may participate remotely by registering at: http://myumi.ch/r8Mr8\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at crees@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Jan Pablo Burgard - Spatial Dynamic Microsimulations - JPSM MPSDS Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jan Pablo Burgard\nUniversity of Trier\n\nSpatial Dynamic Microsimulations\n\nEstimation of regional transition probabilities for spatial dynamic microsimulations from survey data lacking in regional detail\n\nSpatial dynamic microsimulations allow for the multivariate analysis of complex systems with geographic segmentation. A synthetic replica of the system is stochastically projected into future periods using micro-level transition probabilities. These should accurately represent the dynamics of the system to allow for reliable simulation outcomes. In practice\, transition probabilities are unknown and must be estimated from suitable survey data. This can be challenging when the dynamics vary locally. Survey data often lacks in regional detail due to confidentiality restrictions and limited sampling resources. In that case\, transition probability estimates may misrepresent regional dynamics due to insufficient local observations and coverage problems. The simulation process subsequently fails to provide an authentic evolution of the system. A constrained maximum likelihood approach for probability alignment to solve these issues is proposed. It accounts for regional heterogeneity in transition dynamics through the consideration of external benchmarks from administrative records. It is proven that the method is consistent. A parametric bootstrap for uncertainty estimation is presented. Simulation experiments are conducted to compare the approach with an existing method for probability alignment. Furthermore\, an empirical application to labor force estimation based on the German Microcensus is provided.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Social Brown Bag: Adherence to Norms for Emotions is Greater in more Individualist Cultures: Re-evaluating Cultural Individualism using large Cross-Cultural Datasets
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nSocial norms are the unwritten rules shared by members of a culture which guide social coordination and whose violation can lead to social sanctions. Adherence to social norms has been assumed to be weaker in more individualist cultures\, which purportedly prioritize the individual over the group. However\, an alternative perspective is that individualism is characterized by valuing subjective states such as emotions. If this perspective is correct\, adherence to norms for emotions should be greater in more individualist cultures. I will present evidence from studies across several dozen countries and 200\,000+ participants showing that: 1) adherence to emotion norms is greater in more individualist cultures\; 2) deviating from the emotion norms of one’s culture is more detrimental to well-being in more individualist cultures\; and 3) Immigrants from more individualist cultures adopt the emotion norms of natives faster. A final study further demonstrates that the association between individualism-collectivism and adherence to five distinct social norms is highly variable. Taken together\, these findings suggest that individualism is characterized more by valuing and attending to subjective states than by prioritizing the individual over the group.

SUMMARY:Presentation:The social genome and primate evolution
DESCRIPTION:The Evolution and Human Adaptation Program (EHAP) at the University of Michigan is proud to present our fall 2021 speaker series:\n\nAbstract:\nLike other traits\, social behavior is partially shaped by genes. Unlike many other types of traits\, social behavior can have powerful reciprocal effects on the genome. In this talk\, I will discuss the intimate ties between genes and social behavior using examples from my lab’s research on wild and captive primates. Our work on social regulation of the genome highlights how genomic approaches contribute to understanding the links between social interactions\, health\, and fitness\, including the distinct pathways that respond to competitive versus affiliative social relationships. Meanwhile\, our work on hybridization in wild baboons illustrates the value of behavioral data for interpreting patterns embedded in the genome. Integrating genomic and behavioral data can therefore unify organismal perspectives on life history and evolution with molecular approaches that provide insight unattainable via observational methods.\n\n*Note: This talk will be available via Zoom livestream and also in person.

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Free Writing your Medical Story
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever received a medical diagnosis that redefined your life? Perhaps you were staring intently at scans or maybe only listening to the sound of your doctor’s voice\, but in that split second\, your reality changed. \n\nSome of us became patients and others\, caregivers\, as the diagnosis took its place in our lives. We carry these stories in our hearts. This workshop\, led by Instructor Diane Nash\, provides an opportunity to construct a narrative from a collection of memories. It is not a support group. It is a writing workshop designed to help you reflect on and write about your experience. Through extemporaneous writings you will craft the story of the time illness entered your life. \n\nThis study group will meet on Wednesdays for four weeks beginning on October 13. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Labor Economics and Macroeconomics: Female Labor Force Participation and Intergenerational Mobility With Jørgen Modalsli\, M. Daniele Paserman and Laura Salisbury
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThis paper explores the connection between intergenerational economic mobility and the entry of women into the labor force. We propose a simple statistical model of intergenerational transmission\, in which children’s human capital is a function of parental money and time inputs. We derive the father-son (and father-daughter) intergenerational elasticities (IGEs) under two regimes: one in which mothers devote all their time to childrearing\, and one in which mothers split their time between market work and childrearing. We find that the impact of mothers’ entry into the labor force on the father-child IGE depends on three key factors: (i) the nature of sorting in the marriage market\; (ii) the relative importance of parental time and money in the determination of child’s earnings\; and (iii) selection of mothers into labor force participation. We discuss the circumstances under which the entry of mothers into the labor force may have contributed to a decline in the father-son and father-daughter IGEs in Norway.\nWe empirically and theoretically relate the U-shaped labour supply to the process of structural transformation\, and namely the reallocation of labour from female-intensive agriculture into male-intensive manufacturing at early stages of development\, and from manufacturing into female-intensive services at later stages. We propose a multisector model of the economy\, where the interplay between un-even productivity growth and consumption complementarities across sectors predicts the modernization of agriculture and decline of family farms\, the rise in manufacturing and services\, and the marketization of home production. The downward portion of the U-shaped pattern is associated with the decline in agricultural employment and the disappearance of the family farm\, while the upward portion is driven by the expansion of the service economy\, to the detriment of manufacturing\, and the marketization of home production.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Scaling Intense Laser-Atom Interactions from Low to High Frequency
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nOver the past three decades\, the tailoring of a light field for manipulating the dynamics of a system at the quantum level has taken a prevalent role in modern atomic\, molecular and optical physics. As first described by L. V. Keldysh\, the ionization of an atom by an intense laser field will evolve depending upon the light characteristics and atomic binding energy. Numerous experiments have systematically investigated the dependence of the intensity and pulse duration on the ionization dynamics. However\, exploration of the wavelength dependence has been mainly confined to wavelengths near 1 μm\, or in the language of Keldysh to the multiphoton or mixed ionization regime. It is technically possible to perform more thorough test the strong-field limit (tunneling)\, and exploit the scaling laws at wavelengths greater than 1 μm. In addition\, the emergence of XFELs has broadened the scope into the x-ray regime. This new perspective on strong-field interactions is driving a renewed interest in the fundamental physics and a renaissance in applications. This talk will examine the implication of the strong-field scaling as it pertains to the production of energetic particles\, the generation of attosecond pulses and molecular imaging.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nLouis F. DiMauro is Professor of Physics and Hagenlocker Chair at the Ohio State University (OSU). He received his BA (1975) from Hunter College\, CUNY and his Ph.D. from University of Connecticut in 1980 and was a postdoctoral fellow at SUNY Stony Brook before arriving at AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1981. He joined the staff at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1988 rising to the rank of senior scientist. In 2004 he joined the faculty at OSU. He was awarded 2004 BNL/BSA Science & Technology Prize\, 2012 OSU Distinguish Scholar Award\, the 2013 OSA Meggers Prize and the 2017 APS Schawlow Prize in Laser Science. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society\, the Optical Society of American and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has served on numerous national and international committees\, government panels\, as the 2010 APS DAMOP chair\, vice-chair of the NAS CAMOS committee and currently serves on the NAS Board of Physics and Astronomy. His research interests are in experimental ultra-fast and strong-field physics. In 1993\, he and his collaborators introduced the widely accepted semi-classical model in strong-field physics. His current work is focused on the generation\, measurement and application of attosecond x-ray pulses and the study of fundamental scaling of strong field physics.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted in person and simulcast via Zoom\; it is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:The quantum Hall effect\, an unexpected discovery at 2 a.m. on the 5th of February 1980 led to my Nobel Prize in 1985 and to a realization of a resistance standard based on fundamental constants. Since fundamental constants are the most stable quantities in our universe\, a new international system of units based on constants of nature was introduced in 2019. The talk presents an overview of the quantum Hall effect and this importance for our new definition of the mass unit kilogram.\n\nDoors to the fourth floor Rackham Amphitheatre will open at 3:00 pm for seating. Please come early! Per University policy\, each guest will need to wear a face-covering and respond to the ResponsiBLUE COVID Screening Check via their smartphone: https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in\n\nThis will be an in-person event and will also be live-streamed. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Department of Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics Weekly Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nUnderstanding the genetic and molecular architecture of human disease is accelerated by robust model development and large-scale molecular profiling. I will present two studies leveraging big data analytics or automated machine learning to dissect human disease complexities: 1) Molecular and clinical signatures of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the US marines. This analysis revealed strong antiviral innate immunity set point in females contributing to sex differences in both molecular and clinical response to SARS-CoV-2 infection. A set of accurate biomarkers capable of detecting PCR false negative infections was implemented on small footprint devices. 2) Automated machine learning to interpret the effects of genetic variants. An automated framework\, AMBER\, was developed for efficiently searching neural network architectures to model genomic sequences. AMBER is useful in various biological applications\, including fine mapping variants\, partitioning genetic heritability\, and in personalized medicine enabled by CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing. Together\, these efforts demonstrate quantitative methods coupled with large-scale biomedical data as an effective avenue to decode human regulatory and disease biology.\n\nShort Bio:\n\nFrank Zhang is a Flatiron research fellow with Olga Troyanskaya at the Simons Foundation and Princeton University since 2019. Prior to that\, he obtained his PhD at UCLA with Yi Xing. His research focuses on machine learning and statistical method developments for the prediction and interpretation of human molecular and genetic variations using biological big data. Recently\, he works on adopting and developing cutting-edge neural architecture search methods to automate the design of deep neural networks in genomics. He is also interested in making deep learning in biomedicine more interpretable and equitable.\n\nZoom link: https://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Translocas: The Politics of Puerto Rican Drag and Trans Performance
DESCRIPTION:Discussants:\n- David Caron\, Professor\, French and Women's and Gender Studies\, U-M\n- Holly Hughes\, Professor\, Art & Design\, Theater and Drama\, and Women's and Gender Studies\, U-M\n\nTranslocas: The Politics of Puerto Rican Drag and Trans Performance\, written by Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes and published in 2021 by the University of Michigan Press\, focuses on drag and transgender performance and activism in Puerto Rico and its diaspora. Arguing for its political potential\, La Fountain-Stokes explores the social and cultural disruptions caused by Latin American and Latinx “locas” (effeminate men\, drag queens\, transgender performers\, and unruly women) and the various forms of violence to which queer individuals in Puerto Rico and the U.S. are subjected. This interdisciplinary\, auto-ethnographic\, queer-of-color performance studies book explores the lives and work of contemporary performers and activists\, television programs\, films\, and literary works. La Fountain-Stokes\, a drag performer himself\, demonstrates how each destabilizes (and sometimes reifies) dominant notions of gender and sexuality through drag and their embodied transgender expression. These performances provide a means to explore and critique issues of race\, class\, poverty\, national identity\, and migratory displacement while they posit a relationship between audiences and performers that has a ritual-like\, communal dimension. The author also pays careful attention to transgender experience\, highlighting how trans activists and performers mold their bodies\, promote social change\, and create community in a context that oscillates between glamour and abjection.\n\nThis event is part of IRWG's Gender: New Works\, New Questions series\, which spotlights recent publications by U-M faculty members and allows for deeper discussion by an interdisciplinary panel.\n\nRegister to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/MEPVG

What are the possibilities for gathering evidence of such atrocities and holding individuals accountable for them? These questions will be explored by the founder and director of the Syria Justice and Accountability Centre (SJAC)\, which collects and preserves evidence of human rights abuses committed by all parties to the decade-long conflict. We will explore the opportunities for and and barriers to safeguarding forensic evidence and the historical record and generating new approaches to transitional justice based on the unique needs of Syrians. These challenges include the obstacles to documenters on the ground as well as the proper role of international and foreign organizations in accountability processes.\n \n Featuring: Mohammad Al Abdallah\, Executive Director\, Syria Justice and Accountability Centre\n \nCommentator: Leigh Pearce\, PhD\, MPH\, Professor\, Epidemiology\, U-M School of Public Health\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by: Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies\, Gerald R. SJAC houses an enormous database of violations and the only Syrian organization that adopts a technology for human rights approach. SJAC has contributed to war crimes units and prosecutors and provided evidence on multiple criminal cases in Europe and North America\, as well as to specific investigations conducted by the UN Commission of Inquiry.\n\n+++\n\nLeigh Pearce\, PhD\, MPH\, Professor\, Epidemiology\, U-M School of Public Health\n\nLeigh Pearce is a professor of epidemiology in the University of Michigan School of Public Health\, Department of Epidemiology. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges Are Failing Poor Students
DESCRIPTION:Getting into college for disadvantaged students is only half the battle. Dr. Anthony Abraham Jack discusses students he's named the Privileged Poor: lower income students at elite college campuses. He reveals how and why they struggle and explains what schools can do differently if these students are to thrive. He urges us to grapple with a simple fact: access ain't inclusion.\n\nAnthony Abraham Jack is currently a Junior Fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows\, an Assistant Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education\, and the Shutzer Assistant Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. His research documents overlooked diversity among lower-income undergraduates: the doubly disadvantaged – those who enter college from local\, typically distressed public high schools – and the privileged poor – those who do so from boarding\, day\, and preparatory high schools.\n\nHis scholarship appears in The Common Reader\, Du Bois Review\, Sociological Forum\, and Sociology of Education\, and has earned awards from the Association of American Publishers\, American Sociological Association\, American Educational Studies Association\, Association for the Study of Higher Education\, Eastern Sociological Society\, and the Society for the Study of Social Problems. Tony held fellowships from the Ford Foundation and the National Science Foundation and was a 2015 National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation Dissertation Fellow. The National Center for Institutional Diversity at the University of Michigan named him a 2016 Emerging Diversity Scholar. In 2020\, Muhlenberg College awarded him an honorary degree for his work in transforming higher education.\n\nThe New York Times\, Boston Globe\, The Atlantic\, The New Yorker\, The Chronicle of Higher Education\, The Nation\, American Conservative Magazine\, The National Review\, The Washington Post\, CNN\, Vice\, Vox\, and NPR have featured his research and writing as well as biographical profiles of his experiences as a first-generation college student. His first book\, The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges Are Failing Poor Students was awarded the 2020 Mirra Komarovsky Book Award\, 2019 CEP Mildred Garcia Award (Junior) for Exemplary Scholarship\, and the Thomas J. Wilson Memorial Prize and also named a NPR Book’s best Book of 2019.\n\nAccessibility\n\nStamps events are free and open to the public\, and we are committed to making them accessible to all attendees. This event will be online using the Zoom platform with an auto-generated Live Transcript available. SUMMARY:Performance:Suzzy Roche & Lucy Wainwright Roche
DESCRIPTION:*By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.*\n\nAfter a lifetime of performing and recording with The Roches and as a solo performer these days Suzzy enjoys singing on the road with her daughter Lucy Wainwright Roche. Suzzy also performs with The Wooster Group (thewoostergroup.org) most recently in: A Pink Chair (in place of a fake antique)\, Early Shaker Spirituals ~ a record album interpretation \, and The Room by Harold Pinter\n\nSuzzy is a founding member of the singing group The Roches. She has written two books\; a novel Wayward Saints and The Town Crazy\, and a children's book Want To Be in a Band? \n\nIn addition to recording numerous albums with The Roches\, Suzzy has recorded two solo albums\, and an unusual collection of musical prayers\, Zero Church (with Maggie Roche)\, which was developed at the Institute on the Arts and Civic Dialogue at Harvard University\n\nSuzzy has taught performance at NYU graduate and undergraduate schools and at Princeton University in the Atelier Program\n\nThose familiar with Lucy Wainwright Roche are aware of her bell tone voice\, her unshakable melodies\, and her knack for wise\, wry lyrics that clench the heart. It’s no surprise that Wainwright Roche is the daughter of Suzzy Roche (The Roches) and Loudon Wainwright III\, half sibling to Rufus and Martha Wainwright. She grew up steeped in music. \n\nBut Lucy has carved out her own career as a touring singer/songwriter and recording artist\, having sold over 50 thousand copies of her four critically acclaimed solo recordings released on her own label: Eight Songs\, Eight More\, Lucy\, and There’s a Last Time for Everything. Other recordings include a collaboration with her sister Martha Wainwright on Songs In the Dark\, a collection of lullabies\, and two duet recordings with her mother Suzzy Roche: Fairytale and Myth (winner of Vox Pop Independent Music Awards)\, Mud and Apples\, and most recently I Can Still Hear You released in October 2020.\n\nFor over a decade\, as a solo act\, armed with a guitar\, a deadpan sense of humor\, killer songs\, and a voice that makes tough guys cry\, she’s built a solid following across the US and Europe. As an opening act she has often appeared with such luminaries as The Indigo Girls\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, and Neko Case\, and she’s one of a few who can step out alone in front of a thousand strangers and play an entire set to a rapt audience.
