SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal/Vegetable/Mineral Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this RC Art Gallery exhibit\, Residential College and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design Professor of Art Susan Crowell presents\, among other works\, a series of wall plaques depicting endangered species. In Professor Crowell's effort to\, \"...question our interactions with the animal world and our impact upon it\,\" she has installed images of elephants and donkeys as protagonists and antagonists in political struggle\, and polar bears as victims of global warming. \n\n\"Animal/ Vegetable/Mineral presents an occasion to speak about my most compelling interests—plants and animals--within the mineral rubrics of clay\,\" she says.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Masks are required for all attendees. Vaccination is not required but highly encouraged. All attendees must complete a short questionnaire at https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in before entering East Quadrangle.\n\nSusan Crowell is Professor of Art at the University of Michigan\, where she teaches ceramics and holds a joint appointment in the Residential College and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. A Fulbright Scholar\, she studied architectural ceramics at Centro Internazionale di Ceramica in Rome and directed and taught in the University of Michigan’s Program in Florence. Prof. Crowell conducts research and exhibits her work locally\, nationally and internationally. She has presented projects and exhibitions in Canada (at Banff)\, Japan (at Shigaraki and Miyazaki)\, Italy (Rome\, Venice and Florence)\, Taiwan\, Denmark and China\, as well as in France and the United States\, and she has participated in a variety of international venues and residencies. In 2005 Crowell published I Compianti Sul Christo Morto: Lamentation Groupings in Northern Italy to illuminate the distinguished history of ceramic materials in Quattrocento devotional and didactic sculpture\, and to bring an understanding of their use and potential to contemporary ceramics practitioners. In April of 2016 Prof. Crowell exhibited her work in the conservatories of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan\, and in May of 2017\, at the Alden Dow Gardens in Midland\, MI. In 2018 she conducted residencies and research at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science in northern Michigan\, and at A.I.R. Vallauris in Vallauris\, France\, where she exhibited her work in La chapelle de la place Lisnard that October.\n \nFor ten years\, Crowell’s research and artistic practice has focused upon pollen forms and the process of pollination. Deploying her appreciation of the role of technology in revealing the natural world\, she applies the science and aesthetics of botany and apiculture toward the creation of ceramic sculpture\, using cast and hand-built forms. In doing so\, Prof. Crowell presents an expanded view of pollen within the problematics of industrialized honey production\, global commerce in apicultural products\, and genetically modified crops.. More recently\, she has created Thinning the Herd\, an installation of animal forms that addresses endangered species\, and Oppositional\, a commentary on contemporary political behavior in the United States.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Naomi Mburu Research Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Naomi Mburu is a DPhil Candidate in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford focusing on heat transfer for nuclear fusion reactors as a Rhodes Scholar. She is also a former NextProf participant and NERS visitor.\n\nAbstract\nThe development of robust plasma facing components (PFCs) is one of the outstanding challenges to the realisation of electricity generation from nuclear fusion. The PFCs within a commercial tokamak fusion reactor will need to withstand extreme thermal and mechanical loads as well as neutron irradiation for extended periods of time. Currently\, liquid metals are being studied as a promising replacement for solid wall PFC’s because they are self-healing and have the ability to absorb plasma discharge that would otherwise reduce the efficiency of the core plasma. Extensive theoretical and experimental work is still needed to fully characterize the tokamak environment on liquid metal flows. Preliminary theoretical work has shown that under fusion-relevant conditions\, the poloidal magnetic field has a much stronger effect on the thin-film flow of liquid metal than the toroidal field. However\, the comparative magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects on the flow of thin-film liquid metal through poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields have yet to be experimentally quantified. \n\nThis talk details the design of an experimental facility to characterize the flow of a free surface\, thin-film (1 mm) of liquid metal in the presence of a poloidal and toroidal magnetic field of the order of 0.2 Tesla. A Helmholtz Coil is designed and manufactured to produce a region of roughly uniform magnetic field\, and the liquid metal Galinstan is used as the working fluid. The preservation of the Hartmann number (Ha)\, Reynolds number (Re) and aspect ratio (ε) at fusion relevant conditions guides the development of the physical parameters of this experiment. The experiment is designed to allow for high resolution liquid metal surface and depth analysis\, and eventually to explore the added effects of temperature gradients on liquid metal flow in thermoelectric magnetohydrodynamic (TEMHD) conditions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Applied Microeconomics | Industrial Organization: Should The Government Sell You Goods? Evidence from the Milk Market in Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWe study a nationwide welfare program in Mexico in which the government\, in an effort to eliminate hunger\, sells milk to households at subsidized rates via a network of thousands of specialized \"ration stores.\" Such direct provision programs\, which exist in many countries\, often appear puzzling to economists\, as it seems unlikely that the government would have any comparative advantage relative to the private market in procuring and distributing milk. To understand direct provision\, we formulate and estimate an equilibrium model of the milk market\, and use it to compare this program with natural (budget-neutral) alternatives such as milk vouchers or unrestricted cash transfers. Using rich household-level panel data and the variation generated by the staggered entry of new government stores\, we show that market power by private milk suppliers is an important concern\, and that government-sold and privately-sold milk are close (though imperfect) substitutes. Consequently\, direct provision plays an important role in the milk market in Mexico by disciplining private-milk prices. Indeed\, our results suggest that\, in the absence of government milk\, private market prices would be 3% higher\, and that direct provision generates consumer welfare gains of 4% relative to milk vouchers and 2% relative to unrestricted cash transfers.\n\n* To join the seminar\, please contact at econ.events@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Craft Lecture: Experiments with Ekphrastic Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Login here (no pre-registration needed): https://tinyurl.com/ZellWriters\n\nZell Visiting Writers Series craft lectures are free and open to the public\, and will be offered both virtually (via Zoom) and in person (in Angell Hall #3154). Seats at the in-person events are capacity-limited and offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot. Please contact kotziers@umich.edu with any questions or accommodation needs.\n\n\nEkphrasis is a mode in which poets write in response to works of art in other media. Etymologically rooted in the concept of “description\,” ekphrasis allows us to look more closely at the artwork\; but what are other approaches besides observations of the work at hand? This generative workshop focuses on mutating the ekprastic into new compositional and conceptual approaches.\n\nThe dynamic Douglas Kearney is a poet\, performer\, and librettist who has published six books that bridge thematic concerns such as politics\, African-American culture\, masks\, the Trickster figure\, and contemporary music. His most recent book\, *Sho* (Wave Books\, 2021)\, aims to hit crooked licks with straight-seeming sticks. \n\nNavigating the complex penetrability of language\, these poems are sonic in their espousal of Black vernacular strategies\, while examining histories and current events through the lyric\, brand new dances\, and other performances.\n\nKearney is also the author of *Buck Studies* (Fence Books\, 2016)\, which was awarded the CLMP Firecracker Award for Poetry\, the Theodore Roethke Memorial Poetry Award\, and the silver medal for the California Book Award in Poetry. BOMB says *Buck Studies* “remaps the 20th century in a project that is both lyrical and epic\, personal and historical.” Kearney describes the non-traditional layout of his poems as “performative typography.” On the relationship between his poetry and politics\, he notes: “For me\, the political is a part of how I see the world. My art making doesn’t begin without realizing who I am and what it means for me to be writing a poem and not doing something else.” Kearney’s collection of writing on poetics and performativity\, *Mess and Mess* (Noemi Press\, 2015)\, is a Small Press Distribution Handpicked Selection. In it\, Kearney writes\, “If my writing makes a mess of things\, it’s not to flee understanding\, but to map (mis-)understanding as a verb.” *Patter* (Red Hen Press\, 2014)\, Kearney’s third poetry collection\, examines miscarriage\, infertility\, and parenthood. The Black Automaton (Fence Books\, 2009) is a National Poetry Series selection\, which “flows from a consideration of urban speech\, negro spontaneity and book learning.” *Someone Took They Tongues* (Subito Press\, 2016) collects several of Kearney’s libretti\, including one written in a counterfeit Afro-diasporic language. He was the guest editor for *the 2015 Best American Experimental Writing*.\n\nKearney has received a Whiting Writers’ Award and the Cy Twombly Award for Poetry\, and was named a Notable New American Poet by the Poetry Society of America\, He has been awarded fellowships from Cave Canem and The Rauschenberg Foundation. His work has appeared in a number of journals\, including *Poetry*\, *Iowa Review*\, *Boston Review*\, and *Indiana Review*\, and anthologies\, including *Resisting Arrest: Poems to Stretch the Sky*\, *Best American Poetry*\, *Best American Experimental Writing*\, and *What I Say: Innovative Poetry by Black Poets in America*.\n\nRaised in Altadena\, CA\, he lives with his family a little west of Minneapolis\, MN and teaches creative writing at the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities.\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email kotziers@umich.edu-- we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. The building\, event space\, and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. A lactation room (Angell Hall #5209)\, reflection room (Haven Hall #1506)\, and gender-inclusive restroom (Angell Hall 5th floor) are available on site. ASL interpreters and CART services at in-person events are available upon request\; please email kotziers@umich.edu at least two weeks prior to the event\, whenever possible\, to allow time to arrange services.\n\nU-M employees with a U-M parking permit may use the Church Street Parking Structure (525 Church St.\, Ann Arbor) or the Thompson Parking Structure (500 Thompson St.\, Ann Arbor). There is limited metered street parking on State Street and South University Avenue. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Gerda Claeskens\, Professor\, Research Centre for Operations Research and Statistics (ORSTAT)\, KU Leuven
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: When a model for a statistical analysis is not given before the analysis\, but is the result of a model search endeavor\, the uncertainty about the model that is used for inference has consequences for hypothesis testing and for the construction of confidence intervals for the model parameters of interest. Ignoring this uncertainty leads to overoptimistic results\, implying that computed p-values are too small and that confidence intervals are too narrow for the intended coverage.\nI will explain how to use confidence distributions to obtain valid inference after model selection for the parameters of interest. Under some assumptions\, uniformly most powerful post-selection confidence curves are obtained.\n\nThis is joint work with Andrea Garcia-Angulo.\n\nGerda Claeskens is a professor at the Research Centre for Operations Research and Statistics (ORSTAT)\, KU Leuven. Her research interests are Model selection and model averaging\; Post-selection inference\; Nonparametric regression.\n\nhttps://perswww.kuleuven.be/~u0043181/index.htm

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:My Journey in Enabling 100M+ Intelligent Things
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Scott Hanson is the 2020 ECE Rising Star Alumni Award Recipient. \n\nAbstract: \n\nAmbiq spun out of the University of Michigan in 2010 with one goal: to put intelligence everywhere. A decade later\, Ambiq has added intelligence to more than 100 million wearables\, hearables\, smart cards\, industrial sensors\, and medical devices. In this talk\, I’ll give some insight on the journey of building Ambiq from University-backed research project to 150+ person company building chips for the world’s biggest brands. I’ll walk through some of our latest low power circuit innovations and where we’re going next. I’ll also talk about what new innovations we need from you at the University of Michigan to enable 100 BILLION smart things.\n\nBio: \n\nScott Hanson is the Chief Technology Officer and founder of Ambiq. Scott invented SPOT\, Ambiq’s core sub-threshold technology platform\, to enable the world’s most energy-efficient chips during his PhD studies at the University of Michigan. He founded Ambiq in 2010 and led the development of the world record-setting Apollo\, Ambiq’s first flagship processor. Under Scott’s leadership\, Ambiq has shipped more than 100 million chips to the world’s top brands and has grown into the global leader in ultra-low power solutions. \n\nIn addition to his role as CTO\, he has variously played roles leading product definition and development\, managing production test\, and\, most importantly\, spending a great deal of time with customers to understand their needs and their vision. As a widely recognized innovator in low power circuits\, Scott today leads the development of Ambiq’s technology roadmap.\n\nScott’s pioneering work in sub-threshold design and picowatt processors has been widely published\, with more than 30 leading publications\, more than 20 patents on related technology\, and a wide variety of speaking engagements. Scott’s work was honored by the University of Michigan with the 2014 Arbor Networks PhD Research Impact Award and the 2020 ECE Alumni Rising Star Award and was honored by Ernst & Young as an Entrepreneur of the Year 2020 finalist.\n\nThis event is being offered hybrid. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stephanie Dinkins: On Love & Data
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery is proud to present the first survey of renowned transmedia artist Stephanie Dinkins\, who creates platforms for dialogue about artificial intelligence as it intersects race\, gender\, aging\, and our future histories. \nThrough her work\, Dinkins has become a central figure nationally and internationally recognized for exposing bias and inequity within artificial intelligence systems. Weaving together art production and exhibition\, community-based workshops and public speaking all with the intention of encouraging action towards making artificial intelligence systems more inclusive\, accessible and transparent. \n In this exhibition\, Dinkins will debut new and interactive installations and workshops that build on her concept of Afro-now-ism. In this poetic manifesto-like text\, Dinkins asks her audience\, particularly from communities of color\, to not only confront the litany of violences that humans have wielded upon one another based on the institutional and social constructions of race\, caste\, class\, and gender to maintain status quo and the current systems of power - but rise above it by taking action to start building the world that they desire. \nShe writes: “Instead of waiting to reach the proverbial promised land\, also known as a time in the future that may or may not manifest in your lifetime\, Afro-now-ism is taking the leap and the risks to imagine and define oneself beyond systemic oppression... For black people in particular\, it means conceiving yourself in the space of free and expansive thought and acting from a critically integrated space\, allowing for more community-sustaining work.” \n Through her installations and workshops Stephanie Dinkins: On Love &amp\; Data develops a dialogue with the audience on the hierarchies embedded within machine learning and AI architecture and one&#039\;s individual agency in transforming the algorithms within it. The audience will explore and participate in creating a more inclusive data-based narrative of what governance of the people\, by the people and for the people can look like in an AI mediated world where care is encoded within our digital civic system.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:An Emic Anthropological Approach to the Polities of the Early Iron Age Southern Levant
DESCRIPTION:The early Iron Age (Iron Age I-IIA) and more specifically the 12th-10th centuries BCE\, saw the emergence of new polities within the political landscape of the southern Levant. The early kingdoms of Israel and Edom are two well-known examples that have been prominent in recent scholarship. How exactly do we understand the development and nature of these polities at a theoretical level? How and when can we use archaeological evidence to do so\, and how does this relate to our historical sources\, including the Hebrew Bible? These are questions that are important\, but often overlooked by scholars. In this presentation I will discuss the history of scholarship on these questions and present an emic\, anthropological approach to tackling them\, focusing on two important areas: first\, the use of the household as a metaphor that structured the formation of political relationships in the early kingdom of Israel\; and second\, the central but previously-disregarded role that nomads played in the formation of the kingdom of Edom.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCDB Seminar > Cortical interneurons and sensory processing in a model of autism
DESCRIPTION:Atypical sensory processing occurs in a majority of individuals with Fragile X syndrome (FXS)\, the leading inherited cause of autism. Our lab recently discovered that Fmr1 knockout (Fmr1-/-) mice\, a model of FXS\, manifest avoidance behaviors in response to repetitive tactile stimuli\, as well as delayed perceptual learning of a visual discrimination task. At the circuit level\, we found that hypoactivity of GABAergic parvalbumin interneurons (PV-INs) in the mutant mice in somatosensory and visual cortices. This hypofunction of PV interneurons begins at very early developmental stages in Fmr1-/- mice. Approaches that increase PV cell firing in Fmr1-/- mice could restore circuit function.\n\nHost: Sam Kwon\n\nVirtual\nLink/password in weekly announcements or email us at mcdb.seminar.info@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Anti-Racism in an Abroad Context
DESCRIPTION:Structural racism in the United States is the normalization and legitimization of an array of dynamics—historical\, cultural\, institutional\, and interpersonal—that routinely advantage whites while producing cumulative and chronic adverse outcomes for people of color. It is a system of hierarchy and inequity\, primarily characterized by white supremacy—the preferential treatment\, privilege\, and power for white people at the expense of other racially oppressed people. It is also important to recognize that racism is a global issue and continues to be perpetuated in society across the globe and it manifests in many different ways at various levels. This anti-racism workshop in an abroad context aims to offer an entryway for the student to engage in observing how racism plays out in different societies outside the United States\, utilizing examples\, particularly media representation\, that may reflect deeper messages\, and what it means to be anti-racist in the abroad context for American students who have been abroad\, or may be visiting\, studying\, or traveling abroad.\nThis workshop will engage participants in the following activities:\n\nHaving a better understanding of the phrase “anti-racism”\nLearning about race and its nuances\nRecognizing how culture can shape how racism and power structures develop\nSeeing how media around the world uphold oppression in different ways\, and\nCreating action steps toward actively recognizing oppression abroad.\n\nThis workshop is part of the Rackham North Workshop Series although graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from all campuses are welcome to attend.\nThis workshop is designed for master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact RackhamEvents@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/Bo898.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Presentation:CCN Forum: Brain network aging across time and space
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nInfluential models of human brain aging have invoked concepts related to brain networks in order to help explain age-accompanied cognitive decline. Network science offers a formal language and analytic framework for describing patterns of brain connectivity\, whereby the brain can be treated as a network of interacting regions. I will highlight efforts from my lab that have incorporated tools from this rapidly growing science to further our understanding of how the brain’s large-scale network organization changes across human adult lifespan\, and how these brain network changes relate to an individual’s cognitive ability and brain function. In addition\, I will describe the more recent efforts from my lab which are beginning to reveal both the moderating role of an individual’s environment (defined by their socioeconomic status) on their trajectory of brain network decline during adulthood\, and the long-term clinical impacts of this decline. Collectively\, these observations are offering a new perspective towards understanding healthy and pathological aging\, and highlight a path for discovering vulnerabilities of brain aging that are linked to an individual’s past and present environmental exposures.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Quantum effects\, neutrino masses and new oscillation phenomena
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar I will discuss how quantum effects sourced by the neutrino mass mechanism can leave imprints on neutrino oscillations. More precisely\, in the presence of relatively light new physics\, the scale dependence of the mixing parameters can lead to observable effects in neutrino experiments. We discuss some of the experimental signatures of this scenario and present simple\, UV complete models of neutrino masses which lead to observable running of the neutrino mixing matrix below the weak scale.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:RGFP Presents: Problematization: A Critical Framework for Trans Inclusion
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Perry Zurn\nDay: October 22nd\nTime: 3-5 PM\nLocation: Zoom (email sumeetcp@umich.edu or graygv@umich.edu for link) \nTitle: Problematization: A Critical Framework for Trans Inclusion\nSpeaker: Perry Zurn\nDay: October 22nd\nTime: 3-5 PM\nLocation: Zoom (email sumeetcp@umich.edu or graygv@umich.edu for link) \nTitle: Problematization: A Critical Framework for Trans Inclusion\nAbstract: As part of the critical theory project\, the philosophical method of problematization analyzes not only how it is that certain phenomena become problems\, but what sort of problems they become and what set of solutions are offered in response. In this talk\, I apply the method of problematization to the practice of trans inclusion in universities today. I do this in two ways. First\, I analyze how it is that universities take trans life to be a problem such that certain trans-inclusive policies (and not others) are offered as a solution. Second\, I analyze how trans people choose to become a problem for universities such that (trans-inclusive) policies are an insufficient response. Critically evaluating the parameters of competing problematizations\, I close with some brief methodological reflections and practical recommendations.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Student PIRGs Info Session - Learn about Careers to Make a Difference
DESCRIPTION:Students have been\, and continue to be at the forefront of movements to build a better future for our country. But students only make real progress when they’re organized\, have the skills to be effective\, and have a strategic plan to get things done. That’s where we come in: For almost 50 years\, the Student PIRGs have been working to amplify the power of student activism. We help students make real change\, right now\, that will help all Americans to live meaningful lives and have a greener and healthier future.\n\nFor example\, PIRG students are working to ensure young people are full participants in the political process by helping to turn out the vote in local\, state and national elections through our New Voters Project. In the fall of 2020\, we made nearly 400\,000 peer-to-peer personal reminder contacts in the weeks leading up to Election Day. Our hard work paid off and we saw record turnout among young people. We’re keeping up this momentum and aim to help more than 50 campuses get to full voter participation by building strong coalitions on campus that reach all students — from the College Democrats and the College Republicans\, to Greek Life organizations and sports teams\, to multicultural groups and student governments.\n \nWe all want to live meaningful lives in a world that's greener and healthier. That's the future our campus organizers work to build every day. If you want a career working with great people\, gaining real skills and start making a difference on important issues right away\, this could be a good fit for you. \n\nLearn more at jobs.studentpirgs.org

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Using Iron Isotopes to Understand Planetary Formation and Evolution
DESCRIPTION:Originated from similar building materials in the Solar System\, Earth\, other terrestrial planets\, and large asteroids are widely different from each other as a result of distinct formation\, differentiation\, and evolution processes they experienced. Understanding these processes is vital to deciphering how planets achieved their current internal structure and chemical composition\, the fate of volatiles throughout the geological history of a planet\, and ultimately the favorable conditions leading to the development of habitable worlds. Recent advancement in mass spectrometry techniques enabled rapid exploitation in non-traditional isotope systems such as Fe and Cu\, which brought us new ways to study planetary differentiation and evolution. In this talk\, I will show how Fe isotopes can be used to understand planetary core crystallization and to trace deep subduction on Earth.\n\nThose wishing to attend remotely should log in to Zoom ID#989 8458 7392\n\nPlease note:\nBefore entering any U-M building\, all visitors\, contractors and vendors are required to complete a preliminary health screening via the guest version of ResponsiBLUE. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:The Linguistics Department welcomes Tracy Conner\, Assistant Professor in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department at Northwestern University. She will present \"Investigating the Language of Gaslighting.\"\n\nABSTRACT\nGaslighting has been defined as “a type of psychological abuse aimed at making victims seem or feel ‘crazy\,’ creating a ‘surreal’ interpersonal environment” (Sweet 2019:1). The concept has gained popularity in the public sphere through online articles and videos\, though the bulk of the research on the topic has come from the field of Psychology\, and Sociology only more recently. Though gaslighting can take many forms from action to inaction\, one primary vehicle relates to a particular type of manipulative language use. In The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (1959)\, Goffman argues that in order to participate in face-to-face talk\, we make inferences about what people mean in interactions (1959:2–3). Based on a Gricean paradigm\, the inferences we make to attribute meaning to utterances are based on the assumption that our interlocutor’s intent is to be maximally cooperative (Grice\, 1975). In gaslighting\, we know that speakers are crucially not being cooperative\, but this is generally only interpretable by the victim of the abuse. What makes gaslighting so difficult to identify\, and what can linguistic tools help us uncover to lead us closer to understanding this phenomenon? I argue that in some forms of gaslighting\, utterances appear cooperative and follow Gricean maxims through the exploitation of linguistic ambiguity and the difference between logical form and illocutionary force. Ultimately\, the damaging effects for victims of gaslighting are rooted in issues of language and power.\n\nThis talk seeks to establish a unifying definition of gaslighting examining our notion of who we researchers deem experts in the discussion. Furthermore\, the talk evaluates data collected through convenience sampling from online sources\, emails\, and audio recordings to identify the linguistic and pragmatic discursive strategies employed. I make the case that one salient pragmatic strategy in gaslighting is systematic and repetitive avoidance of the Question Under Discussion (QUD) which I define as topic shift. I make the case that topic shift contributes to why victims frequently feel “crazy” as accepting the new topic in conversation forces them to agree with realities that are not germane or true for them\, and any attempt to reintroduce the original QUD makes the victim appear uncooperative.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Musicology Lecture: “Naming and Counting Whiteness:   Fred Astaire\, Stephen Sondheim\, and Race in the American Musical” - Dr. Todd Decker
DESCRIPTION:Todd Decker (Ph.D.\, University of Michigan\, 2007) is the Paul Tietjens Professor of Music\, American Culture Studies\, and Film and Media Studies at Washington University in St. Louis.\n\nRacial segregation pervades the American stage and screen musical from its origins to the present. And while the black-cast musical is usually named as such\, the necessary complement on the other side of the color line—the white-cast musical—is typically granted the unmodified moniker “the musical.” (Eliding race in this way is\, of course\, a classic expression of whiteness.) This talk names the white-cast musical as such by identifying aesthetic\, structural\, and industrial forms of whiteness in the output of two major figures: Fred Astaire and Stephen Sondheim. Drawing on forthcoming work on both men\, I use a variety of methods to identify and describe Astaire’s and Sondheim’s distinct and particular types of whiteness. Adding precision to this inquiry\, I draw on digital humanities methods that quantify the extent to which whiteness dominates the history of the American musical. \n\nWatch via Zoom https://myumi.ch/gjwZq\npasscode 422436

DESCRIPTION:The Size of Darkness aka The Light We Cannot See - VIM VIGOR DANCE\nand an excerpt from the work to be performed by students at the Power Center in 2022.\n\nVIM VIGOR\, founded and directed by U-M Department of Dance associate professor Shannon Gillen\, presents a work-in-progress showing of their latest research\, THE SIZE OF DARKNESS. \n\nAs audiences and performers re-enter the intimacy of theater spaces\, a place where our expectations and opinions are exposed to new and freshly realized experience\, we are again cohabitating the unknown. THE SIZE OF DARKNESS dives headlong into states of unknowing\, catapulting performers through wild physicality and heroic abandon. Audiences will ride with three performers on a journey of becoming\, as the ephemeral nature of dance swallows the past and flows into the future. This work will be set to an original electronic score by Marshall Chadbourne\, where sounds of lightness and darkness\, density and nothingness\, effort and release converge.\n\nWith daredevil physicality\, VIM VIGOR communicates the complexity of human relationships through their signature dance-theater aesthetic\, bodies will flare\, emotions will flood\, and the sharp urgency of our deepest feelings will rocket through space.\n\nConcept\, Direction: Shannon Gillen\nChoreography: Shannon Gillen and Jason Cianciulli\nChoreographic Collaborators: Kiley Dolaway\, Logan Hernandez\nPerformance: Jason Cianciulli\, Kiley Dolaway\, Logan Hernandez\nSound Score: Marshall Chadbourne\nCostume Design: VIM VIGOR DANCE COMPANY\n\nattend in person or watch livestream at https://myumi.ch/R5gQM

Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.*\n\nBonded together by the members' common interest in a musically historical and honest sound\, Cold Tone Harvest formed in southeast Michigan in late 2008. The band comprises singer/songwriter Andrew Sigworth\, bassist Ozzie Andrews\, drummer/banjo player Brian Williams\, and guitarist Anthony Pace. Their union came to fruition much like the music itself did: formulated with patience and mixed with a rugged determination. The paradoxical name proves itself uncannily fitting\, as expertly delivered Americana tropes and soundscapes gradually crack at the seams\, revealing a shimmering sliver of something else entirely. Country-infused melodies and rhythms lace with a lush ambience often reserved for the loneliest of instrumental compositions. Rich and rugged baritone vocals\, clearly suited to whiskey songs and heartache anthems\, instead turn their howls and growls towards brave and poetic lyric territory rarely found in a common folk or bluegrass outing. Cold Tone Harvest rides a rare and beautiful line\, delivering a wall of sound that will grab the ear of the rowdiest music festival enthusiasts\, partnered with the textual eloquence and deeply layered arrangement that begs for solitary repeat listens.
