SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal/Vegetable/Mineral Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this RC Art Gallery exhibit\, Residential College and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design Professor of Art Susan Crowell presents\, among other works\, a series of wall plaques depicting endangered species. In Professor Crowell's effort to\, \"...question our interactions with the animal world and our impact upon it\,\" she has installed images of elephants and donkeys as protagonists and antagonists in political struggle\, and polar bears as victims of global warming. \n\n\"Animal/ Vegetable/Mineral presents an occasion to speak about my most compelling interests—plants and animals--within the mineral rubrics of clay\,\" she says.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Masks are required for all attendees. Vaccination is not required but highly encouraged. All attendees must complete a short questionnaire at https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in before entering East Quadrangle.\n\nSusan Crowell is Professor of Art at the University of Michigan\, where she teaches ceramics and holds a joint appointment in the Residential College and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. A Fulbright Scholar\, she studied architectural ceramics at Centro Internazionale di Ceramica in Rome and directed and taught in the University of Michigan’s Program in Florence. Prof. Crowell conducts research and exhibits her work locally\, nationally and internationally. She has presented projects and exhibitions in Canada (at Banff)\, Japan (at Shigaraki and Miyazaki)\, Italy (Rome\, Venice and Florence)\, Taiwan\, Denmark and China\, as well as in France and the United States\, and she has participated in a variety of international venues and residencies. In 2005 Crowell published I Compianti Sul Christo Morto: Lamentation Groupings in Northern Italy to illuminate the distinguished history of ceramic materials in Quattrocento devotional and didactic sculpture\, and to bring an understanding of their use and potential to contemporary ceramics practitioners. In April of 2016 Prof. Crowell exhibited her work in the conservatories of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan\, and in May of 2017\, at the Alden Dow Gardens in Midland\, MI. In 2018 she conducted residencies and research at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science in northern Michigan\, and at A.I.R. Vallauris in Vallauris\, France\, where she exhibited her work in La chapelle de la place Lisnard that October.\n \nFor ten years\, Crowell’s research and artistic practice has focused upon pollen forms and the process of pollination. Deploying her appreciation of the role of technology in revealing the natural world\, she applies the science and aesthetics of botany and apiculture toward the creation of ceramic sculpture\, using cast and hand-built forms. In doing so\, Prof. Crowell presents an expanded view of pollen within the problematics of industrialized honey production\, global commerce in apicultural products\, and genetically modified crops.. More recently\, she has created Thinning the Herd\, an installation of animal forms that addresses endangered species\, and Oppositional\, a commentary on contemporary political behavior in the United States.

DESCRIPTION:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966 brings to light the collection of house catalogs in the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library’s Special Collections. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest\, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes\, such as\, the Michigan house catalog industry\, changing architectural styles\, the business of selling homes\, societal and cultural implications\, and domestic technologies. We hope the exhibit is not simply a nostalgic view back\, but raises awareness of our domestic surroundings today and compels us to ask questions as we look to the future.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Change it Up!©
DESCRIPTION:Change It Up!© brings bystander intervention skills to students for the purpose of building supportive and respectful communities. Change It Up! is based on a nationally recognized five-step bystander intervention model that develops students’ skills and confidence when intervening in situations that negatively impact campus climate. This workshop explores how students’ identities and experiences impact their interactions inside and outside of the classroom. Through interactive theater\, students apply the five steps to real-life scenarios and have an opportunity to practice and discuss how they can leverage these skills within their campus communities.\n\nGain an understanding of what it means to be a bystander and factors that influence intervention\nGain multiple strategies to intervene and disrupt harm\, such as microaggressions\, bias incidents\, stereotyping\, sexual harassment\, etc.\nAct as an ally and educator\, especially when you hold privilege and power and witness harm to those who do not hold privilege and power\nLearn how to receive and respond to feedback about harm you caused\, even if unintentional\n\nThis workshop is designed for master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact RackhamEvents@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/yKygP.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Was Paul an Apocalyptic Jew? A Case in Jewish Diversity in the Second Temple Period
DESCRIPTION:Conference Chairs: Gabriele Boccaccini\; Lisa Bowens\; Emma Wasserman\; Loren Stuckenbruck\n\nSecretary: Joshua Scott\n\nPaul of Tarsus was born\, lived and died a Jew. Raised as a Pharisee\, he then joined the early Jesus movement\, a first-century Jewish apocalyptic and messianic group. Paul became one of the most vocal leaders of the new movement and promoted its expansion among the gentiles. The conference\, organized by the Enoch Seminar and the Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies\, aims to move Pauline research to a further stage\, beyond reclaiming Paul to Second Temple Judaism and proving that “he was not Lutheran.” By taking Paul’s Jewishness as a shared starting point\, the conference explores the figure of Paul within Second Temple Judaism in a line of continuity with the Jewish apocalyptic tradition (and the Enochic tradition in particular)\, not as an apostate of Judaism but as part of the vibrant Jewish diversity of the time.\n\nThe conference will not be aimed at a general audience\, but will instead bring together a group of selected specialists. It will be a workshop with discussion sessions introduced by oral presentations by specialists\, more than a series of papers. The goal is to gather all major specialists working in the field and have plenty of time for discussion. \n\nFor more information\, contact the conference secretary\, Joshua Scott (scottjos@umich.edu).\n\nRegister for this virtual event here: https://tinyurl.com/p6kr29j5\n\nParticipation is limited to members of academia. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CSCS Seminar | Cooperation\, stochasticity\, and stability\, or: when will the world appear neutral\, and when won’t it?
DESCRIPTION:ZOOM MEETING \nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96616169868 \nPasscode: CSCS\n\nAbstract: Models of microbial interactions have been developed in recent years\, drawing from taxonomic abundances via amplicon sequencing. Many of these models assume that dynamics through time are primarily driven by pairwise interactions between taxa\, but with the drawback that how these interaction strengths may change with environmental context is less than clear. Here we model the consumption and exchange of resources explicitly\, and show that these processes imply new results and principles for the stability of ecological communities. We go on to develop stochastic versions of these models\, and demonstrate a transition between regimes that resemble neutral and niche-dominated dynamics and static patterns. Finally\, I’ll show some recent work on more general stochastic models with individual variation\, and their consequences for coexistence and stability.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium: Neuroimaging insights into substance abuse
DESCRIPTION:The adolescent period is a time when most substance use is initiated and also a time when neural alterations in frontal control and subcortical incentive systems are taking place. Evidence from cross-sectional studies is accumulating for an imbalance between subcortical\, dopamine-related activation and prefrontal control\, which has been proposed to underlie the impulsive\, risky decision making associated with adolescence. Adult substance abusers have alterations in this circuitry\, but it remains unclear whether these alterations reflect pre-existing traits predisposing to substance use or are secondary to substance exposure. The talk will focus on research that probes the neural systems hypothesized to underlie the development of risk for substance use disorders. Findings from the Michigan Longitudinal Study\, a prospective high-risk family study\, will be presented\, and the nationwide Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study will be discussed.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | The Ecology of China’s Early Political Systems
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance for this Zoom webinar here: https://myumi.ch/dOlYw\n\nBy encouraging us to rethink familiar historical processes through an ecological lens\, the field of environmental history provides new insights into the past. Professor Lander’s forthcoming book The King’s Harvest uses such an ecological perspective to examine the formation of political organizations in early China. Since early political systems were funded by the grain taxes of common farmers\, it follows that these systems literally ran on solar energy collected by plants\, so we should think of them as organizations dedicated to mobilizing photosynthetic energy. Early states devoted much of that energy to assembling large groups of men to fight with other groups of armed men\, but they also used it to expand farmland and increase the human population in the interests of increasing their tax income. This paper will use these insights to explore the history of the state and empire of Qin (c. 800-207 BCE). Qin established the centralized bureaucratic empire which became the standard model of political organization in China\, bequeathing subsequent empires with administrative skills that helped them thoroughly transform East Asia’s environments.\n \n Brian Lander studies the environmental history and archaeology of early China. He is an assistant professor at Brown University\, where he teaches in history and environmental studies.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:PICS Career Event. Nuclear Nonproliferation and Arms Control: Challenges\, Opportunities\, and Careers
DESCRIPTION:The international community faces no shortage of challenges when it comes to preventing the spread of nuclear weapons. The crisis in US-Russia relations\, the slow pace of nuclear disarmament\, the future of North Korea’s nuclear weapons program\, and the emergence of new technologies with military applications–these are just a few of the issues that nuclear policy professionals are working to address today. Each of these problems will require creative ideas and novel methodological approaches to surmount. This talk will highlight different opportunities and career paths for students who may wish to contribute to this process. It will focus in particular on the need for greater diversity\, including gender diversity\, among experts and practitioners in this field. All students\, regardless of their level of knowledge of nonproliferation\, disarmament\, or arms control\, are welcome to attend. Questions are strongly encouraged!\n \n Please note: This session will be held virtually EST through Zoom. This webinar is free and open to students\, but registration is required. Once you've registered the joining information will be sent to your email.\n \n Register at: https://myumi.ch/kxX4X\n \n Sarah Bidgood is the director of the Eurasia Nonproliferation Program at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies in Monterey\, California. She also leads the Center’s Young Women in Nonproliferation Initiative. Much of her work focuses on identifying opportunities to revive US-Russia nonproliferation cooperation and arms control today. She is the co-editor of Once and Future Partners: The United States\, Russia\, and Nuclear Nonproliferation\, which was published in 2018.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at is-michigan@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Student PIRGs Info Session - Learn about Careers to Make a Difference
DESCRIPTION:Students have been\, and continue to be at the forefront of movements to build a better future for our country. But students only make real progress when they’re organized\, have the skills to be effective\, and have a strategic plan to get things done. That’s where we come in: For almost 50 years\, the Student PIRGs have been working to amplify the power of student activism. We help students make real change\, right now\, that will help all Americans to live meaningful lives and have a greener and healthier future.\n\nFor example\, PIRG students are working to ensure young people are full participants in the political process by helping to turn out the vote in local\, state and national elections through our New Voters Project. In the fall of 2020\, we made nearly 400\,000 peer-to-peer personal reminder contacts in the weeks leading up to Election Day. Our hard work paid off and we saw record turnout among young people. We’re keeping up this momentum and aim to help more than 50 campuses get to full voter participation by building strong coalitions on campus that reach all students — from the College Democrats and the College Republicans\, to Greek Life organizations and sports teams\, to multicultural groups and student governments.\n \nWe all want to live meaningful lives in a world that's greener and healthier. That's the future our campus organizers work to build every day. If you want a career working with great people\, gaining real skills and start making a difference on important issues right away\, this could be a good fit for you. \n\nLearn more at jobs.studentpirgs.org

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Home Rule Contemporary: Experimental Art and Self-Determination in Kalaallit Nunaat
DESCRIPTION:Home Rule Contemporary: Experimental Art and Self-Determination in Kalaallit Nunaat\n\n \n\nWith the Home Rule Act of 1979\, Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) achieved an unprecedented level of political autonomy. Curiously\, in the midst of this long-awaited confrontation with Danish colonial rule\, the generation of artists whose careers began under expanded sovereignty shied away from political and cultural imagery. But not all was as it appeared. As I will discuss\, Kalaallit and Tunumiit artists applied their commitment to self-determination toward redefining the conceptual foundations of media like installation and video\, inventing formal and technical language that facilitated the continuity of cultural knowledge\, but which also challenged colonial inequalities that persisted during the Home Rule era. Extending questions raised by these projects\, in this talk I will ask how art should respond when colonialism adopts more opaque forms of power\, masking control over land and resources through the strategic recognition of cultural difference.\n\nDavid W. Norman is a Forsyth Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of the History of Art at the University of Michigan. His research focuses on modern and contemporary art in Greenland and the circumpolar north. He is particularly interested in the politics of form and media\, as well as the broader histories and geographies of Indigenous conceptual art. He earned his PhD from the University of Copenhagen in 2021.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS 60th Anniversary Author Series | Reading *The Fortunes*
DESCRIPTION:Register HERE to receive your viewing link via Zoom:\nhttps://myumi.ch/yKegj\n\nThe Center’s 60th anniversary programming will feature author Peter Ho Davies\, Charles Baxter Collegiate Professor of English Language and Literature\, as he offers a reading from The Fortunes\, a novel that recasts American history through the lives of Chinese Americans and reimagines the multigenerational story through the fractures of immigrant family experience. Inhabiting four lives—a railroad baron’s valet who unwittingly ignites an explosion in Chinese labor\, Hollywood’s first Chinese movie star\, a hate-crime victim whose death mobilizes Asian Americans\, and a biracial writer visiting China for an adoption—this work captures and capsizes over a century of our history\, showing that even as family bonds are denied and broken\, a community can survive—as much through love as blood. Building fact into fiction\, spinning fiction around fact\, Davies uses each of these stories—three inspired by real historical characters—to examine the process of becoming not only Chinese American\, but American.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
