SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal/Vegetable/Mineral Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this RC Art Gallery exhibit\, Residential College and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design Professor of Art Susan Crowell presents\, among other works\, a series of wall plaques depicting endangered species. In Professor Crowell's effort to\, \"...question our interactions with the animal world and our impact upon it\,\" she has installed images of elephants and donkeys as protagonists and antagonists in political struggle\, and polar bears as victims of global warming. \n\n\"Animal/ Vegetable/Mineral presents an occasion to speak about my most compelling interests—plants and animals--within the mineral rubrics of clay\,\" she says.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Masks are required for all attendees. Vaccination is not required but highly encouraged. All attendees must complete a short questionnaire at https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in before entering East Quadrangle.\n\nSusan Crowell is Professor of Art at the University of Michigan\, where she teaches ceramics and holds a joint appointment in the Residential College and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. A Fulbright Scholar\, she studied architectural ceramics at Centro Internazionale di Ceramica in Rome and directed and taught in the University of Michigan’s Program in Florence. Prof. Crowell conducts research and exhibits her work locally\, nationally and internationally. She has presented projects and exhibitions in Canada (at Banff)\, Japan (at Shigaraki and Miyazaki)\, Italy (Rome\, Venice and Florence)\, Taiwan\, Denmark and China\, as well as in France and the United States\, and she has participated in a variety of international venues and residencies. In 2005 Crowell published I Compianti Sul Christo Morto: Lamentation Groupings in Northern Italy to illuminate the distinguished history of ceramic materials in Quattrocento devotional and didactic sculpture\, and to bring an understanding of their use and potential to contemporary ceramics practitioners. In April of 2016 Prof. Crowell exhibited her work in the conservatories of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan\, and in May of 2017\, at the Alden Dow Gardens in Midland\, MI. In 2018 she conducted residencies and research at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science in northern Michigan\, and at A.I.R. Vallauris in Vallauris\, France\, where she exhibited her work in La chapelle de la place Lisnard that October.\n \nFor ten years\, Crowell’s research and artistic practice has focused upon pollen forms and the process of pollination. Deploying her appreciation of the role of technology in revealing the natural world\, she applies the science and aesthetics of botany and apiculture toward the creation of ceramic sculpture\, using cast and hand-built forms. In doing so\, Prof. Crowell presents an expanded view of pollen within the problematics of industrialized honey production\, global commerce in apicultural products\, and genetically modified crops.. More recently\, she has created Thinning the Herd\, an installation of animal forms that addresses endangered species\, and Oppositional\, a commentary on contemporary political behavior in the United States.

DESCRIPTION:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966 brings to light the collection of house catalogs in the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library’s Special Collections. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest\, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes\, such as\, the Michigan house catalog industry\, changing architectural styles\, the business of selling homes\, societal and cultural implications\, and domestic technologies. We hope the exhibit is not simply a nostalgic view back\, but raises awareness of our domestic surroundings today and compels us to ask questions as we look to the future.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): The Common-Probability Auction Puzzle (joint with Andy Schotter)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \"This paper presents a puzzle in the behavior of experimental subjects in what we call common-probability auctions. In common-value auctions\, uncertainty is defined over values while\, in common-probability auctions\, uncertainty is defined over probabilities. We find that in contrast to the substantial overbidding found in common-value auctions\, bidding in strategically equivalent common-probability auctions is consistent with Nash-equilibrium. This difference between the two uncertain environments originates in subjects' strategic valuations of the object.\"\n\n(To attend this online event\, please complete the form to receive email instructions and announcements for this and future SBEE Seminars.)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Consequences of Receiving Versus Being Denied a Wanted Abortion
DESCRIPTION:Michigan Population Studies Center Brown Bag seminars presents:\n\nDiana Greene Foster will discuss the context and findings of The Turnaway Study. The Turnaway Study answers the question\, Does abortion hurt women? and the converse\, What are the harms when women are unable to get a wanted abortion? Dr. Foster will review the challenges of studying abortion and what has happened in the absence of rigorous data. She will describe the study design of the Turnaway Study and present its major findings about women’s mental health\, physical health and the wellbeing of their children. She will describe the reasons people give for seeking to end an unwanted pregnancy and what that tells us about whether one can trust women’s decision-making abilities around pregnancy.\n\nDiana Greene Foster\, PhD\, is a demographer who uses quantitative models and analyses to evaluate the effectiveness of family planning policies and the effect of unwanted pregnancy on women’s lives. She is a professor at the University of California\, San Francisco and Director of Research at the UCSF ANSIRH Program. She led the Turnaway Study\, a nationwide longitudinal prospective study of the health and well-being of women who seek abortion including both women who do and do not receive the abortion in the United States. She is currently collaborating with scientists on an NIH-funded Turnaway Study in Nepal. Dr. Foster received her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley\, her MA and PhD in Demography and Public Policy from Princeton University. She is the author of the 2020 book\, The Turnaway Study: Ten Years\, a Thousand Women and the Consequences of Having – or Being Denied – an Abortion. She is the recipient of the 2021 Harriet B. Presser Award for the study of gender and demography from the Population Association of America.\n\nMichigan Population Studies Center (PSC) Brown Bag seminars highlight recent research in population studies and serve as a focal point for building our research community.\n\nhttps://www.psc.isr.umich.edu/events/brown-bag/

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know
DESCRIPTION:We will read and discuss “Think Again” by Adam Grant. He examines ways we could and should question our opinions and attempt to open other people's minds. Many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos\, rather than an opportunity to learn. \n\nAs the book says\, “our beliefs get brittle before our bones.” \n\nYou will learn how an international debate champion wins arguments and how the author has coaxed Yankee fans to root for the Red Sox. Adam Grant shows how to get people to begin questioning their ideas\, but he freely admits it is often impossible to change minds. \n\nInstructor Gerry Lapidus has conducted OLLI book discussions since 2005. The classes are informal and conversational. He leads the first week's discussion and requests volunteers to lead the remaining sessions while he serves as moderator. Please read the Prologue and Section 1 (p.1-32) for the first session.\n\nThis study group will meet on Mondays for six weeks beginning on November 1. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Results From T2K and the Current Landscape of Neutrino Oscillation
DESCRIPTION:Neutrinos are a tiny subatomic particle with surprising properties under active study. In particular\, neutrinos oscillate\, that is\, they convert from one type of neutrino to another\, is a surprising phenomenon under active study. The origin of neutrino mass is important for astrophysics\, cosmology and particle physics\, and many open questions surrounding neutrino oscillation exist. The Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) neutrino oscillation experiment sends a beam of muon flavor neutrinos or antineutrinos 295km across Japan. This seminar will discuss the state of the field of neutrino oscillation physics\, including recent results from T2K\, and T2K's exciting future program.\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MIDAS Seminar Series & Industrial and Operations Engineering Co-Present: Phebe Vayanos\, University of Southern California
DESCRIPTION:Title: Towards robust\, interpretable\, and fair social and public health interventions\n\nAbstract: In the last decades\, significant advances have been made in AI\, ML\, and optimization. Recently\, systems relying on these technologies are being transitioned to the field with the potential of having tremendous influences on people and society. With increase in the scale and diversity of deployment of algorithm-driven decisions in the open world come several challenges including the need for robustness\, interpretability\, and fairness which are confounded by issues of data scarcity and bias\, tractability\, ethical considerations\, and problems of shared responsibility between humans and algorithms. In this talk\, we focus on the problems of homelessness and public health in low resource and vulnerable communities and present research advances in AI\, ML\, and optimization to address one key cross-cutting question: how to allocate scarce intervention resources in these domains while accounting for the challenges of open world deployment? We will show concrete improvements over the state of the art in these domains based on real world data. We are convinced that\, by pushing this line of research\, AI\, ML\, and optimization can play a crucial role to help fight injustice and solve complex problems facing our society.\n\nBio: Phebe Vayanos is a WiSE Gabilan Assistant Professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Southern California. She is also an Associate Director of CAIS\, the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Society. Her research is focused on Operations Research and Artificial Intelligence and in particular on optimization and machine learning. Her work is motivated by problems that are important for social good\, such as those arising in public housing allocation\, public health\, and biodiversity conservation. Prior to joining USC\, she was lecturer in the Operations Research and Statistics Group at the MIT Sloan School of Management\, and a postdoctoral research associate in the Operations Research Center at MIT. She is a recipient of the NSF CAREER award and the INFORMS Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Ambassador Program Award.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:How Can We Make a Real Difference in Healthcare? The Challenges of Implementation
DESCRIPTION:Most of us who work in OR applications in healthcare are frustrated by the fact that planners\, managers and decision makers do not seem to be suitably impressed with the mathematical beauty of our models. The literature abounds with hundreds of application papers\; but when we take a closer look\, few of them describe implementation. The problems in the healthcare industry are generally very similar to corresponding problems in any other sector. Hospitals have staffing issues\, budget constraints\, purchasing decisions\, scheduling\, planning\, etc. The differences are subtle and often related to the culture. Over the years\, I have encountered many challenges and I have been able to design approaches to deal with many of them. A few years ago\, I was asked to pick the five top challenges. I can easily rattle off thirty\, but selecting five was itself a challenge. In this talk\, I will outline my perception of the major hurdles\, provide a few examples and discuss strategies for overcoming them.\n\nMichael Carter is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto and Founding Director of the Centre for Healthcare Engineering (in 2009). Since 1989\, his research focus has been in the area of health care resource modeling. He is on the editorial board for the journals “Health Care Management Science”\, “Operations Research for Health Care”\, “Health Systems” and “IISE Transactions on Healthcare Systems”. In 2012\, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and in 2013\, he was inducted as a Fellow of INFORMS\, the international society for Operations Research and Management Science. In 2018\, he became a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. In 2019\, he won the Northrup Frye Award for Teaching Excellence from the University of Toronto Alumni Association and in 2021\, he was awarded the University of Toronto “President’s Impact Award” for his contributions to improving healthcare in Canada.\n\nThis seminar series is presented by the U-M Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety (CHEPS): Our mission is to improve the safety and quality of healthcare delivery through a multi-disciplinary\, systems-engineering approach. For the Zoom link and password and to be added to the weekly e-mail for the series\, please RSVP. For additional questions\, contact CHEPSseminar@umich.edu.
