In Professor Crowell's effort to, \"...question our interactions with the animal world and our impact upon it,\" she has installed images of elephants and donkeys as protagonists and antagonists in political struggle, and polar bears as victims of global warming. \r\n\r\n\"Animal\/ Vegetable\/Mineral presents an occasion to speak about my most compelling interests\u2014plants and animals--within the mineral rubrics of clay,\" she says.\r\n\r\nThis event is free and open to the public. A Fulbright Scholar, she studied architectural ceramics at Centro Internazionale di Ceramica in Rome and directed and taught in the University of Michigan\u2019s Program in Florence. Prof. Crowell conducts research and exhibits her work locally, nationally and internationally. She has presented projects and exhibitions in Canada (at Banff), Japan (at Shigaraki and Miyazaki), Italy (Rome, Venice and Florence), Taiwan, Denmark and China, as well as in France and the United States, and she has participated in a variety of international venues and residencies. In 2005 Crowell published I Compianti Sul Christo Morto: Lamentation Groupings in Northern Italy to illuminate the distinguished history of ceramic materials in Quattrocento devotional and didactic sculpture, and to bring an understanding of their use and potential to contemporary ceramics practitioners. In April of 2016 Prof. Crowell exhibited her work in the conservatories of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan, and in May of 2017, at the Alden Dow Gardens in Midland, MI. In 2018 she conducted residencies and research at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science in northern Michigan, and at A.I.R. Vallauris in Vallauris, France, where she exhibited her work in La chapelle de la place Lisnard that October.\r\n \r\nFor ten years, Crowell\u2019s research and artistic practice has focused upon pollen forms and the process of pollination. Deploying her appreciation of the role of technology in revealing the natural world, she applies the science and aesthetics of botany and apiculture toward the creation of ceramic sculpture, using cast and hand-built forms. In doing so, Prof. Crowell presents an expanded view of pollen within the problematics of industrialized honey production, global commerce in apicultural products, and genetically modified crops.. We first consider two ambiguity sets defined by decision- dependent bounds on the first and second moments of uncertain parameters and by mean and covariance matrix that exactly match decision-dependent empirical ones, respectively. For both sets, we show that the subproblem in each stage can be recast as a mixed-integer linear program. Moreover, we extend the general moment-based ambiguity set in Delage and Ye (2010) to the multistage decision-dependent setting and derive mixed-integer semidefinite programming (MISDP) reformulations of stage-wise subproblems. We obtain lower and upper bounds of the optimal objective value of the multistage MISDPs. We deploy the Stochastic Dual Dynamic integer Programming (SDDiP) method for solving the problem with risk-neutral or risk- averse objective functions, and conduct numerical studies on multistage facility-location instances having diverse sizes under different parameter and uncertainty settings. Our results show that the SDDiP quickly finds optimal solutions for moderate-sized instances under the first two ambiguity sets, and also finds good approximate bounds for the multistage MISDPs derived under the third ambiguity set. We also demonstrate the efficacy of incorporating decision- dependent distributional ambiguity in multistage decision-making processes. This general decision-making framework can be applied to a broad spectrum of applications, such as shared mobility, supply chain management, and finance. In the future, I look forward to continuing this line of research and combining risk management with reinforcement learning to enhance risk- aware decisions. \r\n\r\nPresenter Bio: Xian Yu is currently a Ph.D. candidate from Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan. Her research interest mainly lies in sequential decision-making and optimization under uncertainty, with applications in transportation, healthcare and supply chain management. She received her BA in music from Barnard College and MA and PhD in musicology from Harvard University. Her research focuses on opera and issues surrounding gender, voice, and race. Her publications include topics on Italian opera, Schoenberg, women composers, and teaching opera in prisons. Her books, Voicing Gender: Castrati, Travesti, and the Second Woman in Early Nineteenth-Century Italian Opera (2006) and Blackness in Opera (2012, edited collection) focus on opera from the nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries and explore constructions of gender, race and identity. She published Black Opera: History, Power, Engagement with University of Illinois Press in 2018, a monograph on staging race and history in opera today in the United States and South Africa. She has served on the Graduate Alumni Council for Harvard University\u2019s Graduate School of Art and Sciences, the Executive Committee for the Criminal Justice Program at the American Friends Service Committee (Ann Arbor, MI), and has served as an evaluator for the Fulbright Senior Specialist Program.\r\n\r\nIn 2019, Naomi was named the inaugural Scholar in Residence at the Seattle Opera and in 2020, she joined with scholars around the world to co-found the Black Opera Research Network to explore the relationship between opera and race. Yet, there is a lack of research on either the causes behind the shortage of younger politicians or the potential consequences for policy outcomes. Understanding whether younger and older policymakers behave differently in office is especially important in advanced democracies such as Japan that confront declining birthrates and rapidly aging populations. In these countries, politicians face soaring welfare costs and tough decisions about how to allocate scarce resources between the needs of younger working families and elderly retirees. Without the presence of more young people in public office, there is a concern that the decisions made by mostly older politicians will lead to welfare policies that favor the elderly at the expense of younger families. Older politicians may also be less willing than younger politicians to address long-term issues such as welfare reform, which will have a greater impact on younger generations.\r\n \r\nIn McClean's book project, he uses original, municipal-level data in Japan to examine whether institutional factors can help explain the variation in the age of politicians across elected offices, whether voters have preferences concerning their representatives\u2019 ages, and whether the shortage of younger politicians matters for welfare policy. In this talk, he will focus especially on this last question by discussing how the age of politicians affects how they allocate government spending on social welfare between age groups and over time.\r\n \r\nCharles McClean studies comparative politics in advanced democracies with a focus on political institutions, representation, social welfare, local politics, and Japan. Substantively, he is interested in age and representation, the age orientation of welfare programs, and how societies confront the challenges of aging populations. His research uses both quantitative and qualitative methods by combining quasi-experimental analysis of observational data, text analysis, and survey experiments together with interviews with Japanese local and national politicians. Her modern portraits and innovative methods challenge social constructs pertaining to individual and collective identity within the broader context of the \u201cAmerican Portrait.\u201d Saldamando\u2019s visual biographies, which use her friends, family, and fellow members of the Chicanx creative community in Los Angeles, create new ways of seeing and being seen.\r\n\r\nAbout the artist: Shizu Saldamando is an LA based mixed media artist with an emphasis on portraiture. She received her B.A. from UCLA\u2019s School of Arts and Architecture and her M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally and experiments with a broad range of surfaces and materials. Saldamando\u2019s practice employs tattooing, video, painting and drawing on canvas, wood, paper, and cloth.
