SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal/Vegetable/Mineral Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this RC Art Gallery exhibit\, Residential College and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design Professor of Art Susan Crowell presents\, among other works\, a series of wall plaques depicting endangered species. In Professor Crowell's effort to\, \"...question our interactions with the animal world and our impact upon it\,\" she has installed images of elephants and donkeys as protagonists and antagonists in political struggle\, and polar bears as victims of global warming. \n\n\"Animal/ Vegetable/Mineral presents an occasion to speak about my most compelling interests—plants and animals--within the mineral rubrics of clay\,\" she says.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Masks are required for all attendees. Vaccination is not required but highly encouraged. All attendees must complete a short questionnaire at https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in before entering East Quadrangle.\n\nSusan Crowell is Professor of Art at the University of Michigan\, where she teaches ceramics and holds a joint appointment in the Residential College and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. A Fulbright Scholar\, she studied architectural ceramics at Centro Internazionale di Ceramica in Rome and directed and taught in the University of Michigan’s Program in Florence. Prof. Crowell conducts research and exhibits her work locally\, nationally and internationally. She has presented projects and exhibitions in Canada (at Banff)\, Japan (at Shigaraki and Miyazaki)\, Italy (Rome\, Venice and Florence)\, Taiwan\, Denmark and China\, as well as in France and the United States\, and she has participated in a variety of international venues and residencies. In 2005 Crowell published I Compianti Sul Christo Morto: Lamentation Groupings in Northern Italy to illuminate the distinguished history of ceramic materials in Quattrocento devotional and didactic sculpture\, and to bring an understanding of their use and potential to contemporary ceramics practitioners. In April of 2016 Prof. Crowell exhibited her work in the conservatories of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan\, and in May of 2017\, at the Alden Dow Gardens in Midland\, MI. In 2018 she conducted residencies and research at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science in northern Michigan\, and at A.I.R. Vallauris in Vallauris\, France\, where she exhibited her work in La chapelle de la place Lisnard that October.\n \nFor ten years\, Crowell’s research and artistic practice has focused upon pollen forms and the process of pollination. Deploying her appreciation of the role of technology in revealing the natural world\, she applies the science and aesthetics of botany and apiculture toward the creation of ceramic sculpture\, using cast and hand-built forms. In doing so\, Prof. Crowell presents an expanded view of pollen within the problematics of industrialized honey production\, global commerce in apicultural products\, and genetically modified crops.. More recently\, she has created Thinning the Herd\, an installation of animal forms that addresses endangered species\, and Oppositional\, a commentary on contemporary political behavior in the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles-based artist Shizu Saldamando was born in 1978 to parents of Mexican-American and Japanese-American descent and raised in San Francisco’s Mission District. Saldamando merges painting and collage\, often using origami paper\, glitter\, or gold leaf in her compositions\, many of which are painted on wood or found surfaces. Her modern portraits and innovative methods challenge social constructs pertaining to individual and collective identity within the broader context of the “American Portrait.” Saldamando’s visual biographies\, which use her friends\, family\, and fellow members of the Chicanx creative community in Los Angeles\, create new ways of seeing and being seen.\n\nOn November 2\, 6:30-8pm\, Shizu Saldamando talks to curator Amanda Krugliak about Shizu's artistic practice and her exhibition *When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine*.\n\nAbout the artist: Shizu Saldamando is an LA based mixed media artist with an emphasis on portraiture. She received her B.A. from UCLA’s School of Arts and Architecture and her M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally and experiments with a broad range of surfaces and materials. Saldamando’s practice employs tattooing\, video\, painting and drawing on canvas\, wood\, paper\, and cloth. The work functions as homage\, as well as documentation\, of friends and peers within artistic and musical subcultures around the Los Angeles metropolitan area. She is currently represented by Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles.\n\nShizu Saldamando is the 2021 Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:This exhibt runs through December 12\, 2021.\n\nMaking art can be a transformative experience. It helps us to confront and address some of the most pressing issues of our time. Art has the power to shift the way we see and understand the world around us\, and the worlds within us. Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan invites us to consider these qualities of art\, while also grappling with the carceral system and the many ways it affects the lives of all of us.\n\nCurrently there are approximately 2.2 million people incarcerated in the United States\, and in Michigan\, there are roughly 33\,000 residents currently serving time in the prison system. Working together with a coalition of more than a dozen organizations and Michigan State University units and departments\, Free Your Mind explores the inner worlds of incarcerated individuals and the fundamental issues that shape conversations around incarceration today. The exhibition centers on four key topics of inquiry: Michigan’s length of sentencing and overcrowding in prisons\; the impact of incarceration on women\; youth incarceration\; and the dangers of COVID-19.\n\nThe exhibition features artists\, poets\, and storytellers of great achievement. The majority of these artists are either currently or formerly incarcerated. Their works on view invite us to consider the role art-making plays in prisons as a liberating force\, and offer unique perspectives on the experience of incarceration. The works also invite us to approach the subject of incarceration with an open mind. Free Your Mind aims to cultivate a greater sense of empathy for those directly impacted by incarceration and an understanding that their growth as individuals is linked to the greater health of the society we all live in\, together.\n\nFree Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan is organized by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University and curated by Steven L. Bridges\, Senior Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs\, and Janie Paul\, Senior Curator and Cofounder\, Annual Exhibitions of Art by Michigan Prisoners\, a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan. Support for this exhibition is provided by the Eli and Edythe Broad endowed exhibitions fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:STEM Incubators: Centering Black Families' Rightful Presence in STEM
DESCRIPTION:Black families act as STEM incubators. Despite stereotypical representations that are often rooted in deficit framing\, Black families provide their children access to STEM opportunities\, resources\, capital\, ways of thinking\, behaving\, and sense-making Scholars have identified that Black parents influence the college-going and completion process through practices such as sharing information\, developing expectations around school completion\, positioning students as examples to younger siblings/family members\, and by sharing advice on how to persist when faced with challenging situations.  Building on this work\, I will present some of my research on Black family life and the lineage Black contributions to STEM in order to provide evidence of the ways that Black families incubate STEM learning and aspirations. I have found that families – with emphasis on parents – leverage capital and establish family cultures values and practices that support STEM exploration and confidence. This talk will highlight some of my recent contributions along with implications for research on informal/family learning spaces

SUMMARY:Presentation:Competitive dynamics in a frugivore guild
DESCRIPTION:The Evolution and Human Adaptation Program (EHAP) at the University of Michigan is proud to present our fall 2021 speaker series:\n\nNote: This talk will take place in-person at the Michigan League - Henderson Room (3rd Floor) and also available via livestream.\n\nAbstract:\nPrimates are often embedded in biodiverse habitats and experience competition not only from conspecifics\, but from other species. In spite of their tendency to live in speciose environments\, socioecological theory only models the effect of within-species competition on social dynamics. In this talk\, I explore the nature and magnitude of feeding competition across scales using behavioral\, physiological\, and demographic data on a guild of fruit-eating primates in Uganda. My research indicates that indirect between-species competition plays an integral role in the social lives of primates and shapes their interactions with other individuals\, social groups\, and species.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition
DESCRIPTION:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition features the work of artists in the Linkage Project\, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) that affirms the creativity of adults who have returned from incarceration. The artists previously exhibited their work at PCAP's Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners at the University of Michigan. For some\, this exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Lab is the first opportunity to show their work since regaining their freedom. Art-making has helped these artists during the dark years of their incarceration\, and we hope the exhibition inspires visitors to learn more about how to support formerly incarcerated people reconnecting with their communities.\n\nMartín Vargas\, artist and curator of this exhibition\, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work\, but also during select Art Lab studio hours\, which will feature several of the artists working in person.\n\nConnections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition is organized by the Linkage Project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. The exhibition is curated by Martín Vargas\, Vanessa Mayesky\, Scott Tompkins\, Nico Slowik\, Kimiko Uyeda\, and Jenna VanFleteren.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CSAAW Seminar | Bernardo Modenesi and Jamie Fogel
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/99929959678\nPasscode: csaaw\n\nAbstract: Recent advances in the literature of decomposition methods in economics have allowed for the identification and estimation of detailed wage gap decompositions. It is possible to decompose the wage gap into (1) a factor explained by differences in workers' covariates and (2) a residual portion potentially due to discrimination and/or to unobservable factors dictating workers' productivitiy. This work proposes a method to leverage the information contained in the labor market network\, in order to enhance controls for the wage gap decomposition exercise. More precisely\, we contribute to the wage decomposition literature in two main ways: (i) developing an economic-principled network theory approach to control for unobserved worker skills heterogeneity in the presence of potential discrimination\; and (ii) extending existing generic decomposition tools to accommodate for potential lack of overlapping supports in covariates between groups being compared\, which is likely to be the norm in more detailed decompositions. We illustrate the methodology by decomposing the gender wage gap in Brazil.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:How close and how much? Linking health outcomes to spatial distributions of built environment features
DESCRIPTION:Veronica Berrocal\, PhD\, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics\, University of California at Irvine.\n\nBuilt environment features (BEFs) refer to aspects of the human constructed environment\, which may in turn support or restrict health related behaviors and thus impact health. In this talk we are interested in understanding whether the spatial distribution and quantity of fast food restaurants (FFRs) influence the risk of obesity in schoolchildren. Our analysis on the influence of patterns of FFR occurrence on obesity among Californian schoolchildren has indicated that\, in 2010\, among schools that are consistently assigned to a cluster\, there is a lower odds of obesity amongst 9th graders who attend schools with most distant FFR occurrences in a 1-mile radius as compared to others.\n\nThe goal of Environmental Statistics Week is to disseminate knowledge of advanced statistical methods most relevant to environmental health research with expert-led discussions on statistical concepts.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Paula Cucurella\, \"Contando ausencias\, buscando cuerpos\"
DESCRIPTION:This talk will be in Spanish.\n\nExiste una versión de la historia de la inmigración a los Estados Unidos escrita en poesía.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Rod Little - On the Definition of Response Propensity – MPSM JPSM Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Rod Little is Richard D. Remington Distinguished University Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Michigan\, where he also holds appointments in the Department of Statistics and the Institute for Social Research. He has over 250 publications\, notably on methods for the analysis of data with missing values and model-based survey inference\, and the application of statistics to diverse scientific areas\, including medicine\, demography\, economics\, psychiatry\, aging and the environment. Little is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute\, a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, and a member of the National Academy of Medicine. In 2005\, Little was awarded the American Statistical Association’s Wilks Medal for research contributions\, and he gave the President’s Invited Address at the Joint Statistical Meetings. He was the COPSS Fisher Lecturer at the 2012 Joint Statistics Meetings.\n\nOn the Definition of Response Propensity\n\nNonresponse propensities play a central role in unit nonresponse adjustments from both design and model-based perspectives\, but are often not clearly defined because of lack of clarity about the variables on which the propensities are conditioned. I propose a definition of response propensity for the purpose of nonresponse adjustments\, where the conditioning is restricted to include the variables measured in the survey as well as design and auxiliary variables measured for respondents and nonrespondents. The proposed definition is justified from both design-based and model-based perspectives. The role of the missing at random assumption is discussed for both perspectives\, for cross-sectional surveys and longitudinal surveys with attrition.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Social Brown Bag: Blame the System\, Not the Victim: Understanding the lack of advocacy for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe U.S. is facing a crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). Murder is the third leading cause among Native women and\, compared to non-Hispanic White women\, Native women are two times more likely to go missing and three times more likely to be murdered. Despite this\, less than 5% of these cases are covered by national or international media (Lucchesi & Echo-Hawk\, 2018). Across two studies we aim to identify the psychological factors that may help explain the lack of advocacy for MMIWG. Study 1 (N = 189) and Study 2 (a pre-registered replication\; N = 4000) revealed that perceptions that Natives: 1) have vanished and 2) do not experience racism\, leads people to blame MMIWG victims and overlook systems that maintain the crisis\, ultimately increasing apathy and undermining advocacy efforts. These findings illuminate the detrimental effects stemming from societies lack of understanding for the lived experience of Native Peoples\, in particular their contemporary existence and experiences with racism.

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Detecting white supremacist speech on social media
DESCRIPTION:Detecting white supremacist speech on social media \nWednesday\, November 3\, 1pm ET\n\nSocial media have been repeatedly shown to harbor white supremacist networks\, enabling far-right extremists to find one another\, recruit and radicalize new members\, and normalize their hate. In order to address the problem of white supremacist speech on social media\, platforms must first be able to identify it. \n\nIn this talk\, Libby Hemphill will present research to understand what white supremacist speech looks like\, especially how it’s different from general or commonplace speech\, and to determine whether white supremacists try to adapt to avoid detection from social media platforms’ current content moderation systems.\n\nISR Insights Speaker Series is a series focusing on the research happening at ISR.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Positive Links Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, November 3\, 2021 \n1:00-1:50 p.m. ET \nFree\, registration required to obtain login information: https://positiveorgs.bus.umich.edu/events/think-again\n\nPositive Links: \n\nThe Positive Links Speaker Series\, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations\, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics\, students\, staff\, and leaders. \n\nAbout the talk: \n\nIntelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn\, but in a rapidly changing world\, there’s another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In our daily lives\, too many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We listen to opinions that make us feel good\, instead of ideas that make us think hard. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos\, rather than an opportunity to learn. We surround ourselves with people who agree with our conclusions\, when we should be gravitating toward those who challenge our thought process. The result is that our beliefs get brittle long before our bones. \n\nJoin us for a virtual fireside chat with Adam Grant\, Wharton’s top-rated professor and the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Originals and Give and Take. He’ll share his bold ideas and rigorous evidence from his new book\, Think Again\, that reveals we don’t have to believe everything we think or internalize everything we feel. Learn how to let go of views that are no longer serving you well and prize mental flexibility\, humility\, and curiosity over foolish consistency. Questioning your opinions and opening other people’s minds can position you for excellence at work and wisdom in life. \n\nAbout Grant: \n\nAdam Grant has been Wharton’s top-rated professor for 7 straight years. As an organizational psychologist\, he is a leading expert on how we can find motivation and meaning\, and live more generous and creative lives. He has been recognized as one of the world’s 10 most influential management thinkers and Fortune’s 40 under 40. \n\nHe is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of 5 books that have sold millions of copies and been translated into 35 languages: Think Again\, Give and Take\, Originals\, Option B\, and Power Moves. His books have been named among the year’s best by Amazon\, Apple\, the Financial Times\, and the Wall Street Journal. His New York Times article on languishing is one of the most-shared articles of 2021. \n\nAdam hosts WorkLife\, a chart-topping TED original podcast. His TED talks on original thinkers and givers and takers have been viewed more than 30 million times. He received a standing ovation at TED in 2016 and was voted the audience’s favorite speaker at The Nantucket Project. His speaking and consulting clients include Google\, the NBA\, Bridgewater\, and the Gates Foundation. He writes on work and psychology for the New York Times\, has served on the Defense Innovation Board at the Pentagon\, and has been honored as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. He has more than 5 million followers on social media and features new insights in his free monthly newsletter\, GRANTED. \n\nHost: \n\nJulia Lee Cunningham\, Center for Positive Organizations Faculty Co-Director\; Associate Professor of Management and Organizations \n\nSeries Sponsors: \n\nThe Center for Positive Organizations thanks Sanger Leadership Center\, Tauber Institute for Global Operations\, Samuel Zell & Robert H. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CMENAS Colloquium Series. Panic\, Pestilence and Religious Coping\; Public Health and Pandemics across the MENA: A psychological Perspective on Arab Countries
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 CMENAS Colloquium Series theme is \"Public Health and Pandemics across the MENA: A Multidisciplinary Exhibit.\" \n\nPlease register to attend at https://myumi.ch/2D3NM.\n \nAbout the Presentations:\n\n*Panic\, Pestilence and Religious Coping*\nPositive religious coping has frequently been associated with better mental health outcomes when dealing with stressful life events (e.g.\, natural disasters\, domestic abuse\, divorce). The COVID-19 pandemic\, and the associated infection prevention and control measures (curfew\, quarantine\, restricted travel\, social distancing)\, represent a society-wide stressor. This presentation will explored positive religious coping in general with a particular focus on Muslims. It will look at research examining responses to the early stages of the pandemic among religious and secular communities. We will argue that among some religious communities\, positive religious coping was inversely related to the development of psychopathology during the pandemic. We conclude that positive (but not negative) religious coping during infectious disease outbreaks may help some individuals reduce their risk of mental health problems. National pandemic preparedness plans may benefit from including a focus on religion and religious coping\n \n*Public Health and Pandemics across the MENA: A psychological Perspective on Arab Countries*\nCOVID-19 pandemic’s mental health impact on Arab countries is under-researched. The goal of this presentation is to share the results of two studies conducted longitudinally in Arab countries. The first study was conducted on 7 Arab countries (N=1743\; conducted from 4/28/2020 to 5/25/2020.)\, and the second on 11 Arab countries (N=2734\; conducted from January to March 2021\, 10 months after the first study). A questionnaire including measures of COVID-19 traumatic stress\, PTSD\, depression\, anxiety\, and cumulative stressors and trauma was distributed anonymously online\, both times. ANOVA results indicated significant differences in COVID19 traumatic stress\, PTSD\, depression\, and anxiety between the countries. Post-hoc analysis indicated that Egypt is significantly higher than all the other Arab countries in COVID-19 traumatic stress\, PTSD\, anxiety\, and depression due\, at least in part\, to higher density\, lower socioeconomic status\, and the actual higher rates of infection. The subsample from Palestine and Iraq had a significantly higher cumulative trauma load than the other Arab countries but did not have higher levels of COVID-19 traumatic stress or PTSD. Hierarchical regression indicated that COVID-19 traumatic stress accounted for significant variance above and beyond the variance accounted for by previous cumulative stressors and traumas. In the second study\, which was conducted ten months later\, we found that the level of infection skyrocketed\; however\, the level of PTSD\, depression and anxiety were almost stable or slightly decreased. The level of COVID-19 stressors slightly decreased\, but Egypt still had the highest COVID-19 stressors. The results reflect increased adjustment over time\, even with increased infection and mortality.\n \nAbout the Speakers:\n\nJustin Thomas is professor of experimental psychology with an interest in the interface between culture\, religion and psychopathology/wellbeing\n \nIbrahim A. Kira\, PhD\, is the director of Center for Cumulative Trauma Studies\, Stone\, GA\, & affiliate of Center for Stress\, Trauma and Resiliency\, Georgia State University\, Atlanta\, GA. His research interest focuses on the dynamics of cumulative stressors/traumas and Stressors/traumas proliferation. He is the lead developer of the developmentally based trauma framework (DBTF) that focuses on the conceptual development and empirical validation of a novel conceptual paradigm of the dynamics of stressors/ traumas\, especially in multiply traumatized populations. He is the first author of over 85 articles and chapter books on the subject.\n\nThe following text will be included on all II events unless you indicate otherwise:If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact Kristin Waterbury at waterbuk@umich.edu.\n\nPlease be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Physics Impacts to Plasma Wave Thruster Design
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe allure of electrodeless\, rf based thrusters is fairly obvious in the abstract: long life due to no electrode sputtering\, multi-propellant operation (in some cases)\, higher plasma density. Examples include capacitive\, inductive\, and wave-based thrusters. Generally\, the fundamental application of these concepts is an rf heated plasma\, expanded through a divergent magnetic nozzle. When a wave is proposed as the plasma generation mechanism\, certain physical parameters are proscribed by the dispersion relation\, which serves to relate plasma parameters to the thruster design. Some considerations of these impacts on plasma sources can be examined in basic models of the wave dispersion\, absorption\, and coupling. The conservation laws in these sources provide additional constraints. The interaction of these phenomena will be discussed from a modeling and experimental perspective for a helicon source in terms of the scaling of density with power\, geometry\, and coupling\, with implications for wave-based thrusters.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. James Gilland is a Senior Scientist at the Ohio Aerospace Institute\, specializing in advanced plasma propulsion (300 W to 300 MW)\, including Hall thrusters (HTs)\, magnetoplasmadynamic thrusters\, and plasma wave thrusters. He currently supports NASA Solar Electric Propulsion HT development for the NASA Gateway. Dr. Gilland has performed system and mission analyses of a range of nuclear and solar electric propulsion systems\; and served as the Lead Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NEP) Engineer in NASA’s Nuclear Propulsion Office\, performing analysis of multimegawatt NEP power and propulsion systems for human space exploration. He is a past NASA Innovative and Advanced Concepts Fellow for his work on propellantless propulsion using Alfven plasma waves. He served on the NASEM panel for Space Nuclear Propulsion Technologies in 2020\, and on several NASA advisory panels\, including the High Energy Power & Propulsion Capabilities Roadmap Team. Dr. Gilland has an MS in Aerospace Engr. from Princeton U. and a PhD in Nuclear Engr. & Engr. Physics from U. of Wisconsin.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted in person and simulcast via Zoom\; it is free and open to the public. An alum of Concordia College-Moorhead (1978) and the University of Minnesota (Ph.D.\, history\, 1984)\, he is the recipient of twelve honorary degrees\, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.\n“How Questions of Power\, Race\, and Identity Shaped a Career”\nWhen assessing a career\, seldom are we invited to turn inward and examine the factors that contributed to a life’s professional pursuits. In considering what has motivated me to tackle certain questions over the arc of a career\, I find myself returning to key moments in my transition from adolescence to adulthood. Growing up in the segregated South\, and becoming a part of the transitional generation\, those young people who massively desegregated southern public and private schools in the late ’60s and early ’70s\, in hindsight\, my school years deeply shaped the questions I have asked about the past and the ways in which my scholarship and institution-building have cohered over decades and across multiple institutions.\nThis lecture revisits those framing moments while focusing on questions of power\, race\, and identity\, three themes that reoccur as focal points in several books\, essays\, and articles. Such a focus allows us to examine the ways African Americans made history and became the subject of history. This analytical lens updates an article that I published in 1995\, “To Turn as on a Pivot\,” which situated more than a century of scholarship about Black Americans and argued for attention to overlapping disaporas.\n \nJanet Smith\, Martha L. Ludwig Distinguished University Professor of Biological Chemistry\, Medical School\, Margaret J. Hunter Collegiate Professor in the Life Sciences\, Associate Director\, Life Sciences Institute\, Professor of Biophysics\, College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\nJanet L. Smith uses X-ray crystallography to study physiologically important proteins and how they function.\nShe has helped determine the structure of many biosynthetic enzymes and several viral proteins\, including those associated with the dengue\, Zika\, and West Nile viruses. Throughout her career\, first at Purdue University and since 2005 as director of the University of Michigan Center for Structural Biology in the Life Sciences Institute (LSI)\, she has coupled a passion for developing new methodologies in structural biology to discovering insights into the biology of macromolecules. Professor Smith played an important role in U-M’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic by advancing development of a test to detect anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Associate director of the LSI since 2017\, she is also an outstanding teacher and mentor and lectures internationally on structural biology and synchrotron radiation. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and received The Protein Society Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin Award in 2021.\n“A Path to Discovering Biology in Protein Structure”\nScientific discovery is a journey along a path that starts with a question. And while each piece of an answer to the question brings new information\, it also creates a fork in the path—reshaping the question\, and our journey\, as we decide which direction to take. This lecture will discuss how that path has unfolded not only in my research journey\, but in my personal and career journey from a bookish childhood to a field of high-tech scientific research. My love of reading pulled me towards scholarship\, the logic of molecules drew me to chemistry\, the creativity of nature inspired my focus on biochemistry\, the beauty of proteins lured me into protein crystallography\, and the need for new technology in crystallography drove me to service for the scientific community. By exploring the twists and turns that opened with each new discovery\, I’ve had the opportunity to witness how new technologies in my field helped many scientists “see” protein structures quickly\, and I’ve experienced the joy of connecting protein structures to biological functions. My path through research has taken many unpredictable turns into new fields\, while the love of reading that started me down this road remains unchanged.\nRegister at https://myumi.ch/WwE7Y

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Department of Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics Weekly Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nMy research group works in the area of mathematical oncology\, where we use mathematical models to decipher the complex networks of reactions inside of cancer cells and interactions between cells. Immune cells use hundreds of biochemical reactions to respond to their environment\, become activated\, and kill cancer cells. Understanding the complexity of these reaction networks requires computational tools and mathematical models. We combine detailed\, mechanistic modeling with machine learning to study these networks\, better understand cancer and immune cells\, and predict ways to control tumor growth. In this talk\, I will present our recent work aimed at predicting the dynamics of immune cell behaviors across three scales: intracellular signaling pathways in CAR T cells\, the collective behavior of a heterogeneous population of immune cells\, and tumor-immune interactions at the tissue scale. Our models generate novel mechanistic insight into immune cell activation and predict the effects of immunotherapeutic strategies. \n\n\nBiography\nStacey D. Finley is the Gordon S. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCAIM Colloquium - Uncovering the Rules of Crumpling with a Data-Driven Approach
DESCRIPTION:When a sheet of paper is crumpled\, it spontaneously develops a network of creases. Despite the apparent disorder of this process\, statistical properties of crumpled sheets exhibit striking reproducibility. Recent experiments have shown that when a sheet is repeatedly crumpled\, the total crease length grows logarithmically [1]. This talk will offer insight into this surprising result by developing a correspondence between crumpling and fragmentation processes. We show how crumpling can be viewed as fragmenting the sheet into flat facets that are outlined by the creases\, and we use this model to reproduce the characteristic logarithmic scaling of total crease length\, thereby supplying a missing physical basis for the observed phenomenon [2].\n\nThis study was made possible by large-scale data analysis of crease networks from crumpling experiments. We will describe recent work to use the same data with machine learning methods to probe the physical rules governing crumpling. We will look at how augmenting experimental data with synthetically generated data can improve predictive power and provide physical insight [3].\n\n[1] O. Gottesman et al.\, Commun. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Michael Beauregard Seminar in Macroeconomics: Liquidity Traps\, Prudential Policies\, and International Spillovers
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWe present a simple open economy framework to study the transmission channels of monetary and macroprudential policies and evaluate the implications for international spillovers and global welfare. Using an analytical decomposition\, we first identify three transmission channels: intertemporal substitution\, expenditure switching\, and aggregate income. Quantitatively\, expenditure switching plays a prominent role for monetary policy\, while macroprudential policy operates almost entirely through intertemporal substitution. Turning to the normative analysis\, we show that the risk of a liquidity trap generates a monetary policy tradeoff between stabilizing output today and reducing capital flows to lower the likelihood of a future recession. However\, leaning against the wind is not necessarily optimal\, even in the absence of capital controls. Finally\, we argue that contrary to emerging policy concerns\, capital controls are not beggar-thy-neighbor and can enhance global macroeconomic stability.\n\n* To join the seminar\, please contact at econ.events@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Performance:Lecture: Yuria Celidwen: “Indigenous Cosmologies And The Relational Earth Consciousness”
DESCRIPTION:Register at https://myumi.ch/3qNrV\n\n\nThis historical moment presents us with the urgent challenge to reflect on who we are\, how we got to where we are\, and what we can do to create collaborative solutions to move onwards in a restorative way. Indigenous Peoples have for millennia developed a sense of awareness of the keen consciousness of the Earth to enhance embodied knowledge and a relational capacity that reverences life based on collaboration and compassion. The cosmologies that come from such insight incite acknowledgment and gratitude to all our relations. Interdependence does not stay as a mere ideal\, it manifests as a perceived\, shared truth engaged in action. Come together to explore our exceptional capacity of reconnection to the nourishing\, relationship\, empowering and transformative force of the Earth. \n\nYuria Celidwin Bio\nI am of Indigenous Nahua and Maya descent from the highlands of Chiapas\, Mexico. My interests are the interdisciplinary approaches to the experience of self-transcendence\, its embodiment in contemplative practice\, and how it enhances prosocial behavior (ethics\, compassion\, kindness\, reverence\, and a sense of awe and sacredness) across Indigenous contemplative traditions. As a scholar\, I work on the intersection of Indigenous studies\, cultural psychology\, and contemplative studies. My thesis on the “Ethics of Belonging” is an earth-based ecological relational experience that engenders an ethos of conscious social responsibility for self\, community\, and environment. Within this work\, I examine how self-identity relates to cultural narratives and how reconstructing them can transform our times’ social and racial injustices. I teach Indigenous epistemologies\, spirituality and pioneered the Indigenous contemplative experience within contemplative studies. As an activist\, I strive for Indigenous representation and the revitalization of Indigenous wisdom as sophisticated systems of contemplative insight. I emphasize the reclamation\, regeneration\, and transmission of Indigenous ways of knowing and the advancement of Indigenous rights and the rights of the Earth for social and environmental justice.  \n\nPresented by the University of Michigan Program in Creativity and Consciousness Studies in collaboration with the Center for Creative Studies (Detroit)

SUMMARY:Presentation:Native American Heritage Month: Opening Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening ceremony kicking off Native American Heritage Month in partnership with the office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs. As we prepare for a month of engaging speakers and presentations surrounding the conversation of intersectional Native/Indigenous identities and important conversations regarding Native representation\, we will be launching our first event by welcoming Dr. Adrienne Keene\, prominent speaker and activist in the Native community. \n\n\nDr. Adrienne Keene (Cherokee Nation) is a Native scholar\, writer\, blogger\, podcast host\, and activist. She is passionate about reframing how the world sees contemporary Native cultures. She is the creator and author of Native Appropriations\, a blog discussing cultural appropriation and stereotypes of Native peoples in fashion\, film\, music\, and other forms of pop culture. She is the author of Notable Native People: 50 Indigenous Leaders\, Dreamers\, and Changemakers from Past and Present (October 2021 - Penguin Random House/Ten Speed Press). And she is co-host (with Matika Wilbur (Swinomish and Tulalip)) of the popular podcast\, All My Relations\, that explores what it means to be a Native person in contemporary America.\n\nThrough her writing and activism\, Keene questions and problematizes the ways Indigenous peoples are represented\, asking for celebrities\, large corporations\, and designers to consider the ways they incorporate \"Native\" elements into their work. She is very interested in the way Native peoples are using social and new media to challenge misrepresentations and present counter-narratives that showcase true Native cultures and identities.\n\nRegister here: https://myumi.ch/O41re

SUMMARY:Performance:Hot Club of Cowtown // Davina and the Vagabonds
DESCRIPTION:*By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.*\n\nSince its beginnings in the late 1990s\, the Hot Club of Cowtown’s star has continued to rise as its reputation for jaw-dropping virtuosity and unforgettable live shows has become the band’s global brand. Lauded for its “down-home melodies and exuberant improvisation” (The Times\, London)\, the Hot Club has always woven a combination of seemingly disparate styles together to its own magical effect\, setting up camp “at that crossroads where country meets jazz and chases the blues away” (The Independent)\, remaining “conscious always that above all else\, the music is for dancing and an old-fashioned good time” (New York Times). The band’s musical alchemy has been described as “another breathless journey in the Texas tardis” (The Times\, London)\, while American Songwriter observed that “the excellent three players of this band could be doing anything but have chosen to honor the greats of jazz and swing with their sound.” The Belfast Telegraph calls the Hot Club of Cowtown “a pretty much perfect country trio at the very top of their game\,” and the New York Times\, in a live review the trio as armed with “an arsenal full of technique and joy.”\n\nDATV’s shows are filled with New Orleans charm\, Memphis soul swagger\, dark theatrical moments that evoke Kurt Weill\, and tender gospel passages. Davina’s voice and stage presence defy category in a different way. Davina has been compared to Etta James\, Amy Winehouse\, Janis Joplin\, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop\, but comparisons don’t suffice: Sowers is a true original.
