SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal/Vegetable/Mineral Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this RC Art Gallery exhibit\, Residential College and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design Professor of Art Susan Crowell presents\, among other works\, a series of wall plaques depicting endangered species. In Professor Crowell's effort to\, \"...question our interactions with the animal world and our impact upon it\,\" she has installed images of elephants and donkeys as protagonists and antagonists in political struggle\, and polar bears as victims of global warming. \n\n\"Animal/ Vegetable/Mineral presents an occasion to speak about my most compelling interests—plants and animals--within the mineral rubrics of clay\,\" she says.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Masks are required for all attendees. Vaccination is not required but highly encouraged. All attendees must complete a short questionnaire at https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in before entering East Quadrangle.\n\nSusan Crowell is Professor of Art at the University of Michigan\, where she teaches ceramics and holds a joint appointment in the Residential College and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. A Fulbright Scholar\, she studied architectural ceramics at Centro Internazionale di Ceramica in Rome and directed and taught in the University of Michigan’s Program in Florence. Prof. Crowell conducts research and exhibits her work locally\, nationally and internationally. She has presented projects and exhibitions in Canada (at Banff)\, Japan (at Shigaraki and Miyazaki)\, Italy (Rome\, Venice and Florence)\, Taiwan\, Denmark and China\, as well as in France and the United States\, and she has participated in a variety of international venues and residencies. In 2005 Crowell published I Compianti Sul Christo Morto: Lamentation Groupings in Northern Italy to illuminate the distinguished history of ceramic materials in Quattrocento devotional and didactic sculpture\, and to bring an understanding of their use and potential to contemporary ceramics practitioners. In April of 2016 Prof. Crowell exhibited her work in the conservatories of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan\, and in May of 2017\, at the Alden Dow Gardens in Midland\, MI. In 2018 she conducted residencies and research at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science in northern Michigan\, and at A.I.R. Vallauris in Vallauris\, France\, where she exhibited her work in La chapelle de la place Lisnard that October.\n \nFor ten years\, Crowell’s research and artistic practice has focused upon pollen forms and the process of pollination. Deploying her appreciation of the role of technology in revealing the natural world\, she applies the science and aesthetics of botany and apiculture toward the creation of ceramic sculpture\, using cast and hand-built forms. In doing so\, Prof. Crowell presents an expanded view of pollen within the problematics of industrialized honey production\, global commerce in apicultural products\, and genetically modified crops.. More recently\, she has created Thinning the Herd\, an installation of animal forms that addresses endangered species\, and Oppositional\, a commentary on contemporary political behavior in the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles-based artist Shizu Saldamando was born in 1978 to parents of Mexican-American and Japanese-American descent and raised in San Francisco’s Mission District. Saldamando merges painting and collage\, often using origami paper\, glitter\, or gold leaf in her compositions\, many of which are painted on wood or found surfaces. Her modern portraits and innovative methods challenge social constructs pertaining to individual and collective identity within the broader context of the “American Portrait.” Saldamando’s visual biographies\, which use her friends\, family\, and fellow members of the Chicanx creative community in Los Angeles\, create new ways of seeing and being seen.\n\nOn November 2\, 6:30-8pm\, Shizu Saldamando talks to curator Amanda Krugliak about Shizu's artistic practice and her exhibition *When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine*.\n\nAbout the artist: Shizu Saldamando is an LA based mixed media artist with an emphasis on portraiture. She received her B.A. from UCLA’s School of Arts and Architecture and her M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally and experiments with a broad range of surfaces and materials. Saldamando’s practice employs tattooing\, video\, painting and drawing on canvas\, wood\, paper\, and cloth. The work functions as homage\, as well as documentation\, of friends and peers within artistic and musical subcultures around the Los Angeles metropolitan area. She is currently represented by Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles.\n\nShizu Saldamando is the 2021 Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities.

New areas and new directions have emerged (such as population genetics and biomeasure collection within national population-based surveys)\, largely as a result of increasing cross-disciplinary collaborations encouraged by the Centers. This successful model represents multiple centers engaged in a range of research and infrastructure activities within thematic research areas. There is wide recognition within the NIA and in the field that the full promise of the center mechanism itself and\, indeed\, the pace of future scientific discovery in aging will depend on scholars continuing to bridge disciplinary divides.\n\nThe Research Centers Collaborative Network (RCCN) was established “to catalyze cross-disciplinary research across the NIA Center Programs\,” which include D&E Centers/D&E Centers on AD/ADRD\, Edward R. Roybal Centers for Translational Research on Aging\, the Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research\, the Claude D. Pepper Older American Independence Centers\, the Nathan Shock Centers of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging\, and the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centers. To promote cross-NIA Center research and support junior scholars\, the RCCN funds pilot research awards. This meeting will feature two RCCN pilot projects that each include a research affiliate of one of the D&E Centers/D&E Centers on AD/ADRD in collaboration with researchers at other NIA Centers. Each team will present preliminary results of their pilot project and share insights on the opportunities and challenges of cross-disciplinary collaboration.\n\nSponsored by the Coordinating Center for the Centers on the Demography & Economics of Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Related Dementias.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:This exhibt runs through December 12\, 2021.\n\nMaking art can be a transformative experience. It helps us to confront and address some of the most pressing issues of our time. Art has the power to shift the way we see and understand the world around us\, and the worlds within us. Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan invites us to consider these qualities of art\, while also grappling with the carceral system and the many ways it affects the lives of all of us.\n\nCurrently there are approximately 2.2 million people incarcerated in the United States\, and in Michigan\, there are roughly 33\,000 residents currently serving time in the prison system. Working together with a coalition of more than a dozen organizations and Michigan State University units and departments\, Free Your Mind explores the inner worlds of incarcerated individuals and the fundamental issues that shape conversations around incarceration today. The exhibition centers on four key topics of inquiry: Michigan’s length of sentencing and overcrowding in prisons\; the impact of incarceration on women\; youth incarceration\; and the dangers of COVID-19.\n\nThe exhibition features artists\, poets\, and storytellers of great achievement. The majority of these artists are either currently or formerly incarcerated. Their works on view invite us to consider the role art-making plays in prisons as a liberating force\, and offer unique perspectives on the experience of incarceration. The works also invite us to approach the subject of incarceration with an open mind. Free Your Mind aims to cultivate a greater sense of empathy for those directly impacted by incarceration and an understanding that their growth as individuals is linked to the greater health of the society we all live in\, together.\n\nFree Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan is organized by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University and curated by Steven L. Bridges\, Senior Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs\, and Janie Paul\, Senior Curator and Cofounder\, Annual Exhibitions of Art by Michigan Prisoners\, a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan. Support for this exhibition is provided by the Eli and Edythe Broad endowed exhibitions fund.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Whither Capitalism?
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the Thursday Morning Lecture Series on Our Changing Economic Landscape.\n\nWhat is capitalism? What forms does it take in the world today? What forms did it take in the past? What forms will it take in the future? As economic systems go\, has it performed well or poorly? \n\nIn this lecture\, Professor Jim Adams will discuss the meaning of capitalism\, the criteria we might use to evaluate capitalism\, and the varieties of capitalism that have existed over time and across the globe. One lesson to emerge from this exercise will be a recognition that governments and markets are not opposites: The varieties of capitalism consist of diverse ways of combining government and market mechanisms to achieve socially desirable outcomes. Important measures of \"outcome\" include not only GDP per capita but also the distribution of health\, happiness\, income\, and wealth.\n\nBorn in New York City and raised in East Lansing\, Michigan\, Professor Adams received three degrees in economics (AB summa cum laude\, AM\, and PhD) from Harvard University. In 1973\, he joined the faculty of the University of Michigan\, where his current title is Shorey Peterson Professor of Industrial Organization\, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor\, and Professor of Economics. Adams has held numerous administrative positions\, including chair of his department\, associate dean of his college\, director of the Program in Philosophy\, Politics\, and Economics\, and director of the Center for West European Studies. He has held visiting professorships at six European universities\, including the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne and the University of Paris Dauphine. \n\nHe has advised the Federal Trade Commission\, the U.S. Ambassador to France\, and several foreign policy departments of the U.S. government. The father of two grown sons\, he is married to a professor emerita of pediatric rheumatology.\n\nPre-registration for this event is required. A link to access the lecture will be provided shortly before the date of the event.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Drawing the Sea Near: Satoumi and Coral Reef Conservation in Okinawa
DESCRIPTION:Please register here in advance for this Zoom webinar: https://myumi.ch/pdYAd\n\nClaus will discuss her recent ethnography that details the decade-long transformation in transnational conservation at an Okinawan field station. In shifting from more traditional distancing practices to a “conservation-near” approach\, transnational conservationists together with islanders created an unusually inclusive\, experiential\, and collaborative form of conservation in Okinawa’s coral reefs. The resulting projects were as consequential for conservationists as they were for islanders.\n \nAssistant Professor\, Department of Anthropology American University\, DC. Affiliated faculty\, Department of Environmental Studies\n\nProfessor Claus has also served as: Researcher Kyoto University Research Institute of Humanity and Nature\, Japan\; Co-Instructor/Teaching Fellow Yale University\, New Haven\, CT\; Social Scientist World Wildlife Fund\, Washington DC\; Japanese Interpreter Paradise Cruise\, Ltd.\, Honolulu\, HI\; Assistant Dean Concordia Japanese Language Villages\, Dent\, MN\; and Program Coordinator/Instructor Okinawa Hands-On NPO\, Okinawa Japan.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition
DESCRIPTION:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition features the work of artists in the Linkage Project\, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) that affirms the creativity of adults who have returned from incarceration. The artists previously exhibited their work at PCAP's Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners at the University of Michigan. For some\, this exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Lab is the first opportunity to show their work since regaining their freedom. Art-making has helped these artists during the dark years of their incarceration\, and we hope the exhibition inspires visitors to learn more about how to support formerly incarcerated people reconnecting with their communities.\n\nMartín Vargas\, artist and curator of this exhibition\, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work\, but also during select Art Lab studio hours\, which will feature several of the artists working in person.\n\nConnections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition is organized by the Linkage Project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. The exhibition is curated by Martín Vargas\, Vanessa Mayesky\, Scott Tompkins\, Nico Slowik\, Kimiko Uyeda\, and Jenna VanFleteren.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: Where To Now in Hypersonics
DESCRIPTION:Allan Paull BSc(Hon) PhD MEngSc\n DST Chair in Future Hypersonic Technologies\nCentre for Hypersonics\nSchool of Mechanical and Mining Engineering\nThe University of Queensland\n\nAbstract\nHypersonic powered flight has traditionally relied on fueled systems for propulsion. However\, the energy density of electrical systems is fast approaching a point where they too will be useful. This seminar looks at ways to convert that energy into high speed propulsion.\n \nAbout the speaker...\nAllan Paull gained his PhD in applied mathematics at the University of Queensland (UQ) and subsequently obtained a MEngSc within the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering at UQ. He has worked for 34 years in hypersonics\, primarily in the field of supersonic combustion and flight-testing. He was initially employed at UQ as a research assistant on a three-month non-extendable contract to Ray Stalker. 20 years later\, he held the position of ARC Professorial Research Fellow\, still working with Ray at UQ. Whilst at UQ he developed and led the HyShot flight program to establish the correlation between flight and shock tunnel measurements of supersonic combustion. HyShot led to the DARPA sponsored HyCAUSE program that led to the AFRL/DST HIFiRE flight program. In total\, he has been the lead for 14 hypersonic flight tests. During the HIFiRE program he was employed at the Defense Science and Technology Group and remained an Adjunct Professor to UQ until 2019\, when he rejoined UQ again in the position of DST Chair in Future Hypersonic Technologies where he now concentrates on advanced concepts. He is also the Technical Lead to the Australian Program Office for Advanced Hypersonics and the Technical Advisor to the UQ flight program called STAje-.

The second part of the talk will focus on methods of modeling degrees of automation in human-in-the-loop systems as well as the impact on operator situation awareness (SA) responses. We contend that methods of some prior research do not represent engineering models\, per se. Furthermore\, discrete and ordinal characteristics of other models limit reliable prediction of operator performance with automation. This research defines an “automation rate” (AR) function involving classification of all system functions according to stages of information processing\, calculation of the AR for each stage\, setting weighting factors for these rates\, and finally obtaining an overall AR for the system. The practicality and feasibility of this model are verified through a case study analysis. In addition\, we formulate a new model of operator SA responses to AR\, based on existing empirical research findings. Through the case analysis and mathematical proof\, the rationality of the form of these new models is demonstrated. This work lays the foundation for subsequent optimization of automated system design for operator SA. This study provides an example of current human-systems engineering research through the UF ISE Department. \n\nBio:\nDavid Kaber is currently the Dean’s Leadership Professor and Chair of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Florida (UF). Prior to joining UF\, Kaber was a distinguished professor of industrial engineering at North Carolina State University where he also served as the Director of Research for the Ergonomics Center of North Carolina. Kaber’s primary area of research interest is human-systems engineering with a focus on human-automaton interaction\, including design and analysis for situation awareness in complex human in-the-loop systems. Domains of study for his research have included physical work systems\, industrial safety systems\, robotic systems\, transportation systems and healthcare. Kaber is a senior member of IEEE and junior-past Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems. He is a fellow of Institute of Industrial Engineers and the Human Factors & Ergonomics Society. Kaber is also a Certified Human Factors Professional (BCPE) and a Certified Safety Professional (BCSP).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CLASP Seminar Series: Prof. Zhaoxia Pu of the University of Utah
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Zhaoxia Pu of the University of Utah will give a lecture as part of the CLASP Seminar Series. Please join us!\n\nProf. Pu’s presentation is titled \"Data Assimilation and Machine Learning at the Frontier of Earth System Modeling and Prediction\" and will take place on Thursday\, November 4 at 3:30 p.m. EDT.\n\nThis seminar will be in person at the Climate and Space Research Building Auditorium\, Room 2246.\n\nThe seminar may also be viewed via Zoom.\nPlease contact lhopkins@umich to request zoom access.\n\nABSTRACT: \nData assimilation combines current available observations with numerical simulations constrained by previous observations to obtain the best possible analysis and prediction of the Earth system. It plays a central role in modern numerical weather and climate prediction. Due to its ability to integrate all sources of observations and Earth system modeling information\, data assimilation has also been a powerful tool for model parameter estimation and optimization\, reanalysis\, model error estimation and correction\, coupled Earth system modeling\, ensemble forecasting\, and observing system development.\nWith remarkable advances in machine learning and deep learning (ML/DL) techniques\, there is rapidly growing interest in applying ML/DL in Earth system modeling and prediction. While ML/DL provides different ways to deal with the information and modeling\, it shares similar aims with data assimilation: to learn about the world using observations. This similarity makes it conceptually feasible to integrate standard ML/DL techniques and ideas into data assimilation workflows for improved Earth system modeling and prediction.\n \nThis seminar emphasizes recent accomplishments in atmospheric data assimilation with the most recent research results on satellite and radar data assimilation for improved severe weather forecasting\, coupled land-atmosphere data assimilation for enhanced representation of land-atmosphere interactions\, and data assimilation in support of observing system development. The recent application of ML/DL in weather and climate prediction will be reviewed. The future direction of Earth system modeling and prediction with combined data assimilation and ML/DL methods will be discussed\, particularly in the context of predicting weather and climate extremes\, as noted in the recent United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Women in Post-311 Disaster Japan and the Politics of Recovery
DESCRIPTION:Format: This event will take place via Zoom webinar. Register here: https://myumi.ch/xm1G9\n\nDescription: In the disruption caused by any disaster\, there is always the possibility of new forms of political engagement. Out of chaos can come anger and sometimes new forms of action around the recognition of grievances that have become more obvious. In the best of possible cases\, actors form new alliances and collective goals\, as well as strategies to reach those goals. Under these conditions\, “recovery” can take ambiguous meanings because recovery often means a return to an older state of affairs\, the state of affairs that led to the disaster in the first place\, and maybe even the suppression of these new politics. Showing video clips from the largest collection of digital video narratives of the 2011 triple disasters in northern Japan (Voices from Tohoku)\, Professor Slater will point to the important intersection between politics and recovery in two ways as experienced by women in the area. First\, he will look at the top-down efforts by the Japanese state to “manage” the immediate recovery period (the politics of recovery) and then later on\, the way in which different groups of Japanese women sought to recover some sense of political agency as raw emotions of 2011 faded into the 10-year anniversary of the disaster (the recovery of politics).\n\nBiography: David H. Slater is a professor of cultural anthropology at Sophia University\, Tokyo. His research interests include capitalism\, youth\, labor\, semiotics\, and urban space. Recently\, his work has focused on the 3.11 Tohoku disasters. He is archiver and curator of Voices from Tohoku: Digital Archive of Disaster\, Recovery and Mobilization\, the largest collection of digital oral narratives of the 3.11 triple disasters (https://tohokukaranokoe.org/).\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC/CM Seminar | Electrically Charged Skyrmions: Theory and Practice
DESCRIPTION:Link for the seminar: https://umich.zoom.us/j/95097563417\nTopic: QC/CM Seminar Virtual - Nov 4\nTime: Nov 4\, 2021 04:00 PM America/Detroit\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95097563417\nMeeting ID: 950 9756 3417\n\nSkyrmions\, first proposed in the context of nuclear physics\, have since found many applications to the solid state in the form of topological textures in a material’s magnetic order. When skyrmions arise in systems with band topology\, Berry-phase effects can endow them with an electric charge in addition to their magnetic moment\, with important implications for electrical transport. I’ll start by highlighting recent experimental work using scanning tunneling microscopy to “image” charged valley skyrmions in the quantum Hall states of graphene. I’ll then discuss how skyrmions may arise in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene. In this system skyrmions are predicted to be charge-2 bosons which may Bose condense\, potentially giving a new route to electron-mediated superconductivity. \n

SUMMARY:Performance:CINDERELLA (Cendrillon)
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Voice \nUniversity Symphony Orchestra\n\nMusic by Jules Massenet\nLibretto by Henri Cain\nAfter the fairy tale by Charles Perrault\nStage Direction by Abbigail Coté\nMusic Direction by Kirk Severtson\n\nThe King is throwing a ball in Prince Charming’s honor\, and all will be in attendance—except for Lucette\, known as “Cinderella” to her stepmother & stepsisters—until Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother steps in. The fairy’s spell lasts only until midnight. That’s long enough for Cinderella and Prince Charming to meet and fall in love. \n\nThis witty French opera premiered in Paris at the Opéra-Comique on May 24\, 1899. It is based on the classic fairy tale as told by Charles Perrault. This operatic version is closer to Perrault’s story than the version used in Rossini’s La Cenerentola. Its music is full of melodic charm with recognizable arias. \n\nThis production will be sung in French with projected English translations.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Rodina
DESCRIPTION:How to make freedom and playfulness – traditionally granted to artists – accessible to a wider audience? And\, how to design situations or objects that stimulate activity and participation\, that could lead to a transformation in a viewer or a social context? During this talk\, Amsterdam-based designer Tereza Ruller (studio The Rodina) tries to answer these questions. She identifies performative components in graphic design processes and results. With examples of her recent projects\, Ruller proposes the term “performative design” for a practice that incorporates graphic design\, playfulness\, bodies\, action\, and eventness (understanding this as a unique time and space). Performance becomes an alternative mode of value production and a space for critique and imagination. The Rodina (Tereza and Vit Ruller) is a post-critical design studio with an experimental practice drenched in strategies of performance art\, play and subversion. The Rodina invents ways in which experience\, knowledge and relations are produced and preserved. In their work\, Tereza and Vit often explore the spatial and interactive possibilities of virtual environments as a space for new thoughts and aesthetics that come forward from between culture and technology. The studio works mostly for cultural clients such as Harvard GSD (USA)\, Sonic Acts Foundation (NL)\, and Hyundai Card Library Seoul (KR).\nHow to Watch\nThis Penny Stamps Speaker Series event will premiere on November 4\, 2021 at 8pm and can be viewed on this page\, at dptv.org\, or on the Penny Stamps Series Facebook page.
