After running a scrap metal factory in Tokyo during World War II, his grandfather ended up in Cheonggyecheon of Seoul where rundown small scale metal workshops still exist amidst the gentrifying city. The Chinese, Muslims, Ultra-Orthodox Jews, American White Nationalists among other groups have been blamed. Central to our recently published book \u201cI Know Who Caused COVID-19\": Pandemics and Xenophobia (Reaktion Press \/ University of Chicago Press) is the question of what happens when such groups are blamed and simultaneously at fault? Dr. Gilman and Dr. Zhou examined a series of case studies but closed our book on January 20, 2021. The story continues past that date to the present and they will address both the first year as well as the present Delta surge in the light of our model of xenophobia and pandemics in this symposium with the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies and the Jewish Muslim Research Network.\r\n\r\nAdvanced Registration Required: https:\/\/myumi.ch\/Axw1y\r\n\r\nDr ZHOU, Xun is the reader in History at the University of Essex. Her research interests range from medicine, health intervention and delivery in modern China to nutrition, food and narcotics, and more broadly the political history of the People\u2019s Republic of China (PRC) as well as questions of race and ethnicity. She also have a track record in trans-cultural\/global studies and have built up a profile in the history of global health. She is the author of The People\u2019s Health: Health Intervention and Delivery in Mao\u2019s China, 1949-1983 (McGill-Queen University Press, 2020), the first systematic study on health care and medicine in Mao\u2019s China. From the onset of the Covid-19 crisis, she has been regularly interviewed by major media outlets from the BBC to the Financial Times, the Guardian, the New York Times, and Aljazeera, to name a few, to comment on the outbreak in Wuhan and the Chinese health system as well as to speak on historical correlates of the global pandemic.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSander L. Gilman is a distinguished professor emeritus of the Liberal Arts and Sciences as well as emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at Emory University. A cultural and literary historian, he is the author or editor of over one hundred books. His \u201cI Know Who Caused COVID-19\u201d: Pandemics and Xenophobia (with Zhou Xun) appeared with Reaktion Press (London) in 2021; his most recent edited volume is The Oxford Handbook of Music and the Body (with Youn Kim) published in 2019 with Oxford University Press. He is the author of the basic study of the visual stereotyping of the mentally ill, Seeing the Insane, published by John Wiley and Sons in 1982 (reprinted: 1996 and 2014) as well as the standard study of Jewish Self-Hatred, the title of his Johns Hopkins University Press monograph of 1986, which is still in print. For twenty-five years he was a member of the humanities and medical faculties at Cornell University where he held the Goldwin Smith Professorship of Humane Studies. For six years he held the Henry R. Luce Distinguished Service Professorship of the Liberal Arts in Human Biology at the University of Chicago. For four years he was a distinguished professor of the Liberal Arts and Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he created the \u2018Humanities Laboratory.\u2019 During 1990-1991 he served as the Visiting Historical Scholar at the National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, MD; 1996-1997 as a fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford, CA; 2000-2001 as a Berlin prize fellow at the American Academy in Berlin; 2004-5 as the Weidenfeld Visiting Professor of European Comparative Literature at Oxford University; 2007 to 2012 as Professor at the Institute in the Humanities, Birkbeck College; 2010 to 2013 as a Visiting Research Professor at The University of Hong Kong; and recently as the Alliance Professor of History at the Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich (2017-18). He has been a visiting professor at numerous universities in North America, South Africa, The United Kingdom, Germany, Israel, China, and New Zealand. He was president of the Modern Language Association in 1995. He has been awarded a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) at the University of Toronto in 1997, elected an honorary professor of the Free University in Berlin (2000), an honorary member of the American Psychoanalytic Association (2007), and made a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2016).\r\n\r\nAlaa Murad is a PhD candidate in history at Brandeis University focusing on the Middle East and North Africa. A Fulbright Scholar, she studied architectural ceramics at Centro Internazionale di Ceramica in Rome and directed and taught in the University of Michigan\u2019s Program in Florence. Prof. Crowell conducts research and exhibits her work locally, nationally and internationally. She has presented projects and exhibitions in Canada (at Banff), Japan (at Shigaraki and Miyazaki), Italy (Rome, Venice and Florence), Taiwan, Denmark and China, as well as in France and the United States, and she has participated in a variety of international venues and residencies. In 2005 Crowell published I Compianti Sul Christo Morto: Lamentation Groupings in Northern Italy to illuminate the distinguished history of ceramic materials in Quattrocento devotional and didactic sculpture, and to bring an understanding of their use and potential to contemporary ceramics practitioners. In April of 2016 Prof. Crowell exhibited her work in the conservatories of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan, and in May of 2017, at the Alden Dow Gardens in Midland, MI. In 2018 she conducted residencies and research at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science in northern Michigan, and at A.I.R. Vallauris in Vallauris, France, where she exhibited her work in La chapelle de la place Lisnard that October.\r\n \r\nFor ten years, Crowell\u2019s research and artistic practice has focused upon pollen forms and the process of pollination. Deploying her appreciation of the role of technology in revealing the natural world, she applies the science and aesthetics of botany and apiculture toward the creation of ceramic sculpture, using cast and hand-built forms. In doing so, Prof. Crowell presents an expanded view of pollen within the problematics of industrialized honey production, global commerce in apicultural products, and genetically modified crops.. He is the Director of the Criminal Justice Administrative Records System (CJARS), a new data infrastructure project joint with the U.S. Census Bureau that seeks to collect and link extensive amounts of criminal justice microdata with social and economic data held at the Census Bureau. We may experience deliberation as if we were \u2018talking in our head\u2019, thus using inner speech to verbalize our premises, lemmas, and conclusions without employing our vocal tract to generate explicit utterances. The claim that we can consciously reason through inner speech\u2014that is, that inner speech can serve as the representational vehicle for conscious reasoning\u2014is, prima facie, intuitively compelling. Even those who are dubious of the claim offer explanations for why it may erroneously appear as if inner speech \u2018utterances\u2019 can constitute occurrent propositional attitudes, like occurrent judgements, suppositions, etc. (cf. Carruthers 2011). However, intuitions notwithstanding, the claim that we can consciously reason through inner speech takes considerable work to defend. \r\n\r\nPeter Langland-Hassan (2014) has forcefully argued that, insofar as inner speech possesses a sensory, vocal character, it cannot carry the sort of propositional contents required to function as, say, an occurrent judgment in conscious deliberation. In this talk, I argue that, pace Langland-Hassan, an inner speech utterance can be the bearer of propositional contents such that it can function as an occurrent judgment. As I demonstrate, the functional role a mental state plays in working memory is determined in a flexible and context sensitive manner by metacognitive monitoring and control procedures. An inner speech utterance functions as an occurrent judgment (and can, thus, function as a premise, lemma, or conclusion in a line of conscious reasoning) when it is experienced with a level of certainty that exceeds one\u2019s threshold of confidence for acceptance. In virtue of an agent experiencing an inner speech utterance with a sufficient level of certainty, the utterance plays the functional role of an occurrent judgment through, e.g., terminating inquiry and causing overt actions (like overtly asserting the words rehearsed in inner speech) and further mental states (like further inner speech utterances).\r\n\r\nAll cognitive science seminars this semester are virtual. These medications are an important tool for pain management, however excessive opioid prescribing, especially after surgery, can lead to long-term dependence and medication diversion in our communities. This is a dangerous trend that has contributed to the rise of the opioid epidemic in the United States. Dr. Englesbe and Alex Hallway have spent the last 5 years studying these trends and developing solutions to reduce excessive opioid prescribing in acute care. This talk details their efforts to improve practice at a local and state level through policy, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.\r\n\r\nAlex Hallway is a Research Area Specialist affiliated with the Michigan Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network and the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC). Alex studied Human Biology and Supply Chain Management at Michigan State University. He has worked on patient care and quality improvement initiatives at Michigan Medicine since 2017. As the Pain-control Optimization Pathway Lead, Alex works with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the MSQC to promote surgical pain control innovation in Michigan hospitals. Alex also leads the MSQC Prehabilitation program, which aims to collect novel preoperative data elements and optimize patient health prior to surgery. Alex is passionate about surgical process optimization using technology and lean thinking. He enjoys working at the intersection of quality improvement and research and has published his work in journals such as JAMA Surgery, The Journal of the American College of Surgeons, and JAMA Network OPEN.\r\n\r\nMichael Englesbe, MD, FACS is the Cyrenus G. Darling Sr., MD and Cyrenus G. Darling Jr., MD Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan in the Section of Transplantation Surgery. Dr. Englesbe received his undergraduate degree at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut in 1993. He went on to obtain his medical degree in 1997 from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Michigan Health System in 2004. From 2000 to 2002, Dr. Englesbe did a surgical research post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Englesbe specializes in kidney and liver transplantation in adults and children. We were trying to do something bigger than ourselves,\u201d says Brian. \u201cI think we\u2019ve been wanting to make this record for a while now. It just hasn\u2019t come together as perfectly as it did this time.\u201d\u00a0\r\n\r\nA lone piano launches into a hymn as the album\u2019s intro track. The pianist is Zach\u2019s grandmother, playing at the funeral of her husband of 64 years\u2013\u2013Zach\u2019s grandfather. The hymn returns as an interlude and outro, underscoring The Lone Bellow\u2019s intention for 12 songs to be experienced together, as an album.\u00a0\r\n\r\nWonder\u2013\u2013feeling it, losing it, finding it again\u2013\u2013underpins the entire record. Pulsing with the trio\u2019s signature harmonies, the track \u201cWonder\u201d is a loving call to reclaim the childlike awe and appreciation age takes away. Zach pulled from vivid childhood memories to craft the song, which transports listeners to moments of breathlessness experienced in the everyday: cheap coffee, backroad car rides, pine-tree views, and powerful songs.\u00a0\r\n\r\nJubilant \u201cI Can Feel You Dancing\u201d rolls into a cathartic celebration. The song pays tribute to \u201clionhearted\u201d free spirits with horns and soaring vocals. With a winking jungle beat, \u201cGood Times\u201d tells tales Zach has collected over the years. \u201cSome stories were told on a boat I worked on in the Caribbean in the middle of the night. Some were in old Irish pubs in Manhattan. Some were in backyards down in my hometown. Some were in a hospital bed,\u201d Zach says. \u201cI wanted to shine light on the fact that there are still people living with beauty and reckless abandonment.\u201d Delivered over intimate acoustic guitar and hushed backing instrumentation, \u201cEnemies\u201d is a self-contained call and response that reconnects life-defining moments with the frustrating or tenuous present that threatens to snuff out the magic.\r\n\r\nLead single \u201cCount On Me\u201d reminds us to lean on one another with soul-shouting intensity. Praise for deep friendships pops up again and again throughout the album: \u201cFriends\u201d celebrates the relationships forged after years together in the trenches\u2013\u2013with a musical swagger that nods to David Byrne and Tom Petty.\r\n\r\nKanene takes the lead on tour-de-force \u201cJust Enough to Get By.\u201d Her inimitable voice\u2013\u2013capable of grit and smoothness\u2013\u2013pushes through line after line with steely purpose. The performance would saunter were it not for the rage bubbling underneath. Kanene wrote the song about her mother, who was raped at 19, then sent away to have the baby that resulted. When she returned home, she never spoke of what had happened until 40 years later, when Kanene\u2019s half-sister\u2013\u2013the baby\u2013\u2013found them. \u201cI\u2019ve met my half-sister many times. She\u2019s wonderful and lovely and an amazing story of something never being too broken to be fixed. But my mom had to work through the trauma,\u201d Kanene says. \u201cThis song was me putting myself in my mom\u2019s place, releasing a lot of complex emotions. Anger is definitely one of them. Hurt, frustration, sadness. We all have experiences that could be better if we could talk about them, but we keep them hidden.\u201d\r\n\r\nAlbum standout \u201cIllegal Immigrant\u201d also features Kanene\u2019s vocals. Brian took the lead writing the song, which tells the true story of a mother and child separated at the U.S.-Mexico border. The chorus\u2019s \u201cI promised I\u2019d find you, wherever you are, wherever you are \/ Here I am\u201d is equal parts haunting, heartbreaking, and reassuring\u2013\u2013and the unfiltered words actually spoken by the immigrant mother into a press conference microphone. Kanene sings with weighty restraint\u2013\u2013like a parent burying their own terror so they can be their child\u2019s rock. \u201cI was trying to tell her story the best I could,\u201d Brian says. \u201cI wanted to keep myself as far out of the equation as I could and just try to connect\u2013\u2013to help find some compassion.\u201d\u00a0\r\n\r\nBrian also penned \u201cWash It Clean,\u201d which both Zach and Kanene point to as a favorite. Lilting with guitar and harmonica, the song is a letter to Brian\u2019s dad, who passed away suddenly last year. The two had a strained relationship, and Brian spent years trying to find some common ground. They did, and then two months later, his dad was gone. The band recorded the song on the one-year anniversary of Brian\u2019s father\u2019s death, without Brian even realizing it at the time. \u201cI feel like that means he was here\u2013\u2013or in me,\u201d Brian says. \u201cWorking really hard to find understanding was probably one of the greatest gifts and lessons of my whole life.\u201d\u00a0\r\n\r\nThe stories behind the songs matter\u2013\u2013but they aren\u2019t what matters most. In the end, The Lone Bellow\u2019s music needs no explanation. Just listening offers a salve and a shelter. \u201cIn my own perfect little world, I would be able to put the music out and not talk about it\u2013\u2013just,\u00a0Here. Bye.
