SUMMARY:Exhibition:Animal/Vegetable/Mineral Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this RC Art Gallery exhibit\, Residential College and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design Professor of Art Susan Crowell presents\, among other works\, a series of wall plaques depicting endangered species. In Professor Crowell's effort to\, \"...question our interactions with the animal world and our impact upon it\,\" she has installed images of elephants and donkeys as protagonists and antagonists in political struggle\, and polar bears as victims of global warming. \n\n\"Animal/ Vegetable/Mineral presents an occasion to speak about my most compelling interests—plants and animals--within the mineral rubrics of clay\,\" she says.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Masks are required for all attendees. Vaccination is not required but highly encouraged. All attendees must complete a short questionnaire at https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in before entering East Quadrangle.\n\nSusan Crowell is Professor of Art at the University of Michigan\, where she teaches ceramics and holds a joint appointment in the Residential College and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. A Fulbright Scholar\, she studied architectural ceramics at Centro Internazionale di Ceramica in Rome and directed and taught in the University of Michigan’s Program in Florence. Prof. Crowell conducts research and exhibits her work locally\, nationally and internationally. She has presented projects and exhibitions in Canada (at Banff)\, Japan (at Shigaraki and Miyazaki)\, Italy (Rome\, Venice and Florence)\, Taiwan\, Denmark and China\, as well as in France and the United States\, and she has participated in a variety of international venues and residencies. In 2005 Crowell published I Compianti Sul Christo Morto: Lamentation Groupings in Northern Italy to illuminate the distinguished history of ceramic materials in Quattrocento devotional and didactic sculpture\, and to bring an understanding of their use and potential to contemporary ceramics practitioners. In April of 2016 Prof. Crowell exhibited her work in the conservatories of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan\, and in May of 2017\, at the Alden Dow Gardens in Midland\, MI. In 2018 she conducted residencies and research at the Jean Noble Parsons Center for the Study of Art and Science in northern Michigan\, and at A.I.R. Vallauris in Vallauris\, France\, where she exhibited her work in La chapelle de la place Lisnard that October.\n \nFor ten years\, Crowell’s research and artistic practice has focused upon pollen forms and the process of pollination. Deploying her appreciation of the role of technology in revealing the natural world\, she applies the science and aesthetics of botany and apiculture toward the creation of ceramic sculpture\, using cast and hand-built forms. In doing so\, Prof. Crowell presents an expanded view of pollen within the problematics of industrialized honey production\, global commerce in apicultural products\, and genetically modified crops.. More recently\, she has created Thinning the Herd\, an installation of animal forms that addresses endangered species\, and Oppositional\, a commentary on contemporary political behavior in the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles-based artist Shizu Saldamando was born in 1978 to parents of Mexican-American and Japanese-American descent and raised in San Francisco’s Mission District. Saldamando merges painting and collage\, often using origami paper\, glitter\, or gold leaf in her compositions\, many of which are painted on wood or found surfaces. Her modern portraits and innovative methods challenge social constructs pertaining to individual and collective identity within the broader context of the “American Portrait.” Saldamando’s visual biographies\, which use her friends\, family\, and fellow members of the Chicanx creative community in Los Angeles\, create new ways of seeing and being seen.\n\nOn November 2\, 6:30-8pm\, Shizu Saldamando talks to curator Amanda Krugliak about Shizu's artistic practice and her exhibition *When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine*.\n\nAbout the artist: Shizu Saldamando is an LA based mixed media artist with an emphasis on portraiture. She received her B.A. from UCLA’s School of Arts and Architecture and her M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally and experiments with a broad range of surfaces and materials. Saldamando’s practice employs tattooing\, video\, painting and drawing on canvas\, wood\, paper\, and cloth. The work functions as homage\, as well as documentation\, of friends and peers within artistic and musical subcultures around the Los Angeles metropolitan area. She is currently represented by Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles.\n\nShizu Saldamando is the 2021 Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Applied Microeconomics Industrial Organization and Labor Economics: Aftermarket Frictions and the Cost of Off-Platform Options in Centralized Assignment Mechanisms
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nIn many settings\, market designers must contend with the presence of firms who participate in the broader game surrounding a market but do not participate in the portion under the designer’s control. In this paper\, we study the empirical relevance of the configuration of on- and off-platform options in the context of a centralized college-major choice system. We quantify significant negative externalities generated by off-platform options and measure the aftermarket frictions that contribute to generating them in practice. Our empirical application uses administrative data from the centralized assignment system for higher education in Chile and leverages a recent policy change that increased the number of on-platform slots by approximately 40%. We first present a policy analysis which shows that expanding the centralized platform leads students to start college sooner and raises the share of students who graduate within six years. We develop an empirical model of college applications\, aftermarket waitlists\, and matriculation choices. We estimate the model using students’ ranked-ordered applications\, on- and off-platform enrollment\, and on-time graduation outcomes. We use the estimated model to quantify welfare impacts\, decompose different mechanisms and to conduct counterfactual exercises. We find that when more programs are available on the centralized platform\, welfare increases substantially. These externalities are driven by students who receive and decline on-platform offers\, and are amplified by substantial frictions in waitlists. Our results indicate that expanding the scope of a higher education platform can have real impacts on welfare and human capital. Importantly\, the effects are larger for students from lower SES backgrounds\, suggesting the design of platforms can have effects on both efficiency and equity.\n* To join the seminar\, please contact at econ.events@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Craft Lecture: Writing Across Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Login here (no pre-registration needed): https://tinyurl.com/ZellWriters\n\nZell Visiting Writers Series craft lectures are free and open to the public\, and will be offered both virtually (via Zoom) and in person (in Angell Hall #3154). Seats at the in-person events are capacity-limited and offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot. Please contact kotziers@umich.edu with any questions or accommodation needs.\n\n\nAndrea Lee's work\, like her life\, has always been shaped by themes of otherness\, of foreignness\, by the ongoing conflict generated by attempts to define insider and outsider. Her craft lecture will address the question: How\, in a period of unprecedented overlap and collision between cultures--and the anxiety sparked by this phenomenon--does a writer find the creative equilibrium to examine this eternal theme with insight and respect? \n\nAndrea Lee is a American writer whose books often deal with themes of expatriate life\, clashing cultures\, and nuances of identity\, particularly among Black Americans. She is most recently the author of *Red Island House*\, a novel set in the tropical African island nation of Madagascar. She is also the author of the story collection *Interesting Women*\, the novels *Lost Hearts in Italy* and *Sarah Phillips*\, and the National Book Award–nominated memoir *Russian Journal*. A former staff writer for *The New Yorker*\, she has written for *The New York Times Magazine*\, *Vogue*\, *W*\, and *The New York Times Book Review*. She grew up in Philadelphia\, received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Harvard University\, and subsequently moved to Europe\, where she presently lives with her family in Turin\, Italy.\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email kotziers@umich.edu-- we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. The building\, event space\, and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. A lactation room (Angell Hall #5209)\, reflection room (Haven Hall #1506)\, and gender-inclusive restroom (Angell Hall 5th floor) are available on site. ASL interpreters and CART services at in-person events are available upon request\; please email kotziers@umich.edu at least two weeks prior to the event\, whenever possible\, to allow time to arrange services.\n\nU-M employees with a U-M parking permit may use the Church Street Parking Structure (525 Church St.\, Ann Arbor) or the Thompson Parking Structure (500 Thompson St.\, Ann Arbor). There is limited metered street parking on State Street and South University Avenue. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:This exhibt runs through December 12\, 2021.\n\nMaking art can be a transformative experience. It helps us to confront and address some of the most pressing issues of our time. Art has the power to shift the way we see and understand the world around us\, and the worlds within us. Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan invites us to consider these qualities of art\, while also grappling with the carceral system and the many ways it affects the lives of all of us.\n\nCurrently there are approximately 2.2 million people incarcerated in the United States\, and in Michigan\, there are roughly 33\,000 residents currently serving time in the prison system. Working together with a coalition of more than a dozen organizations and Michigan State University units and departments\, Free Your Mind explores the inner worlds of incarcerated individuals and the fundamental issues that shape conversations around incarceration today. The exhibition centers on four key topics of inquiry: Michigan’s length of sentencing and overcrowding in prisons\; the impact of incarceration on women\; youth incarceration\; and the dangers of COVID-19.\n\nThe exhibition features artists\, poets\, and storytellers of great achievement. The majority of these artists are either currently or formerly incarcerated. Their works on view invite us to consider the role art-making plays in prisons as a liberating force\, and offer unique perspectives on the experience of incarceration. The works also invite us to approach the subject of incarceration with an open mind. Free Your Mind aims to cultivate a greater sense of empathy for those directly impacted by incarceration and an understanding that their growth as individuals is linked to the greater health of the society we all live in\, together.\n\nFree Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan is organized by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University and curated by Steven L. Bridges\, Senior Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs\, and Janie Paul\, Senior Curator and Cofounder\, Annual Exhibitions of Art by Michigan Prisoners\, a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan. Support for this exhibition is provided by the Eli and Edythe Broad endowed exhibitions fund.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Chun Wang\, Associate Professor of Measurement and Statistics\, College of Education\, University of Washington
DESCRIPTION:Measurement invariance (MI) is a statistical property of measurement which implies that the same construct is measured across different groups\, or over time. In high-stakes assessments that measure students’ understanding and mastery of disciplinary concepts\, measurement invariance is also regarded as an important facet of test fairness. Statistical methods for evaluating measurement invariance originate from Mantel-Haenszel chi-square statistics and flourish within the item response theory (IRT) framework. In this talk\, I will introduce a latent regression with regularization method as an emerging approach for evaluating MI. This new method is particularly tuned for two scenarios: (1) a test measures multiple correlated domains\, and (2) a digital-first adaptive assessment with automatic item generation. It will be shown that the new method can simultaneously detect measurement non-invariance in multiple items caused by multiple factors in both scenarios. \n\n\nChun Wang is an Associate Professor of measurement and statistics in the College of Education at the University of Washington (UW). She is also an affiliated faculty of the Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences at UW. Her research focuses on psychometric models and methods around educational and psychological measurement\, including multidimensional and multilevel item response theory models and applications\, cognitive diagnostic modeling and computerized adaptive testing. She is the Associate Editor of the Applied Psychological Measurement\, British Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology\, and the Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics.\n\nhttps://stat.uw.edu/about-us/people/chun-wang

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Lecture & Watch Party: Tereza Ruller\, The Rodina
DESCRIPTION:You're invited to attend an interactive lecture in the Art & Architecture Building Commons (or tune in virtually) on Friday\, November 12\, featuring designer\, performer\, and educator Tereza Ruller from The Rodina. Lunch will be provided for watch party attendees that register - and please plan to bring your laptop. \n\nHow to make freedom and playfulness – traditionally granted to artists – accessible to a wider audience? And\, how to design situations or objects that stimulate activity and participation\, that could lead to a transformation in a viewer or a social context? During this talk\, Amsterdam-based designer Tereza Ruller (studio The Rodina) tries to answer these questions. She identifies performative components in graphic design processes and results. With examples of her recent projects\, Ruller proposes the term “performative design” for a practice that incorporates graphic design\, playfulness\, bodies\, action\, and eventness (understanding this as a unique time and space). Performance becomes an alternative mode of value production and a space for critique and imagination.\n\nThe Rodina (Tereza and Vit Ruller) is a post-critical design studio with an experimental practice drenched in strategies of performance art\, play and subversion. The Rodina invents ways in which experience\, knowledge and relations are produced and preserved. In their work\, Tereza and Vit often explore the spatial and interactive possibilities of virtual environments as a space for new thoughts and aesthetics that come forward from between culture and technology. The studio works mostly for the cultural clients such as Harvard GSD (USA)\, Sonic Acts Foundation (NL)\, and Hyundai Card Library Seoul (KR).\n\nThis event is hosted in partnership with the Penny Stamps Speaker Series. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition
DESCRIPTION:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition features the work of artists in the Linkage Project\, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) that affirms the creativity of adults who have returned from incarceration. The artists previously exhibited their work at PCAP's Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners at the University of Michigan. For some\, this exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Lab is the first opportunity to show their work since regaining their freedom. Art-making has helped these artists during the dark years of their incarceration\, and we hope the exhibition inspires visitors to learn more about how to support formerly incarcerated people reconnecting with their communities.\n\nMartín Vargas\, artist and curator of this exhibition\, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work\, but also during select Art Lab studio hours\, which will feature several of the artists working in person.\n\nConnections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition is organized by the Linkage Project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. The exhibition is curated by Martín Vargas\, Vanessa Mayesky\, Scott Tompkins\, Nico Slowik\, Kimiko Uyeda\, and Jenna VanFleteren.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Genome Organization through Phase Separation: Random yet Precise
DESCRIPTION:The three-dimensional genome organization plays an essential role in all DNA-templated processes\, including gene transcription\, gene regulation\, DNA replication\, etc. Coarse-grained models parameterized to reproduce experimental data via the maximum entropy optimization algorithm serve as effective means to study genome organization at various length scales. They have provided insight into the principles of whole-genome organization and enabled de novo predictions of chromosome structures from epigenetic modifications. In addition\, they provided insight into the critical role of the chromatin network in stabilizing multiple liquid droplets. Applications of these models at a near-atomic resolution further revealed physicochemical interactions that drive the phase separation of disordered proteins and dictate chromatin stability in situ.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Miniaturizing Meaning: Miniature Pottery on Bronze Age Crete
DESCRIPTION:Often assumed to be ritual votives or toys for children\, miniature ceramic vessels in the Bronze Age Aegean have been afforded little thorough study. Their presence at peak sanctuaries\, sacred caves\, and shrines on Crete has led to their uncritical association with ritual activity\, even outside of sacred areas. When miniature pots are found in domestic spaces\, they are often dismissed as objects of household ritual or simple toys. Yet miniature vessels\, diverse in form and context\, are so pervasive in archaeological investigations of Minoan settlements that they merit further comprehensive study. Considered alongside the abundance of small-scale Minoan material culture\, including figurines\, seals\, miniature wall paintings\, and models\, miniature pottery appears to be one facet of a larger semiotic ideology – one well-versed in the language and power of the miniature. \n\nThis talk investigates the use\, significance\, and meaning of miniature ceramic vessels in settlements on Minoan Crete. By analyzing 504 miniature pots from thirteen sites in central and east Crete\, it explores the wide range of miniature types used in the Protopalatial and Neopalatial periods and applies contextual analysis to draw out their meanings and identify two distinct categories within the corpus of miniature pots. By investigating the cognitive effects of miniaturization and applying Peircean understandings of iconicity and indexicality to these objects\, the use and significance of Bronze Age miniature vessels are further illuminated\, in ritual and beyond.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Reconquista: Indigenous Migrants and their New Geographies of Mestizaje
DESCRIPTION:Undisciplined // Global Theories of Critique 2021-22\nAll meetings are on Zoom\, and open to all publics. \n\nThe Global Theories of Critique (GTC) workshop this year revolves around the practice of un-disciplining knowledge. Each speaker will open up the session with the body of theory and/or practice they strive to un-discipline and challenge in their work. Followed by a round-table discussion of the speakers’ work that the participants will read beforehand.\n\nIn our November meeting\, we will be rethinking the concept of indigeneity in the context of the migration of indigenous people from Latin America to the United States since 1994.\n\nFri\, Nov 12\, 12:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)\n\n\"Reconquista: Indigenous Migrants and their New Geographies of Mestizaje\"\n\nProfessor María Josefina Saldaña-Portillo \n\nDepartment of Social & Cultural Analysis & the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, New York University. \n\nRegister in advance for this event here: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0qdeugrjoiGNdLSP8YS8lxfbhI53giJsjn. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\n\nAbstract:\n\nTens of thousands of indigenous peoples from Latin America have migrated to the United States since 1994\, the vast majority of those from Mexico and Mesoamerica traveling as family units. As a consequence\, according to the 2020 US Census\, the Native American population in the US increased by 86% since 2010. Zapotec is now second only to Navajo as the most-spoken indigenous language in the United States\, while Mixtec is taught as part of the bilingual education curriculum in New York City. This is challenging how we define indigeneity in the United States\, our official categories of recognition. Latin American indigenous people in US cities and towns not only bring into sharp relief different hemispheric modes of defining indigenous identity\, they also challenge the ongoing biopolitical function of mestizaje and indigenismo in Latin America. How does the mass migration that we are witnessing of indigenous peoples require a hemispheric rethinking of indigeneity? Of mestizaje? Of who gets to sing the nation-state now\, and in what languages?\n\nFor this event\, we will read the following 2 pieces. They will be sent to participants prior to the event:\n\n1. Saldaña-Portillo\, \"Where is the Indian in Aztlán?\" (forthcoming/unpublished article)\n\n2. Saldaña-Portillo\, \"Who's the Indian in Aztlán? Re-Writing Mestizaje\, Indianism\, and Chicanismo from the Lacandón\" in Who's the Indian in Aztlán? Re-Writing Mestizaje\, Indianism\, and Chicanismo from the Lacandón (Duke UP)\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the Department of American Culture and the Center of Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Fall 2021 MEMS Lecture. Revealed Sciences: Religion\, Science\, and the Occult in Early Modern Morocco
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will argue for the vibrancy of an early modern Muslim society through a study of the natural sciences in seventeenth-century Morocco and will discuss the relationship between religious thought and these sciences in early modern Morocco in the light of the narratives of decline of post-formative Islamic thought established by nineteenth and twentieth-century European and Middle Eastern scholars. By using close readings of medical\, astronomical\, and alchemical works and a detailed overview of the place of the natural sciences in scholarly and educational landscapes of the early modern Maghreb\, we can consider non-teleological possibilities for understanding early modern Moroccan scholars' persistent engagement with these sciences.\n\nJustin Stearns is associate professor of Arab Crossroads Studies at New York University Abu Dhabi. His research interests focus on the intersection of law\, science\, and theology in the pre-modern Muslim Middle East. His first book was Infectious Ideas: Contagion in Pre-Modern Islamic and Christian Thought in the Western Mediterranean (Johns Hopkins University Press\, 2011). His book on the social status of the natural sciences in early modern Morocco\, Revealed Sciences: The Natural Sciences in Islam in Early Modern Morocco (Cambridge University Press) was published in 2021\, and the first volume of his edition and translation of al-Yusi’s (d. 1102/1691) Discourses appeared with the Library of Arabic Literature in 2020.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Organizational Support for Diversity & Inclusion Management Practices
DESCRIPTION:Organizations are continuing to direct efforts to recruit women and underrepresented minority members (URM\; Black/African American\, American Indian/Alaska Native\, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander\, or Hispanic/Latinx) to increase workforce diversity. Yet\, the underrepresentation of women and URM members persists across many industries and organizations\, rendering the need to strengthen the body of research that looks to find ways organizations can increase recruitment and selection of minority employees. My colleagues and I address this need by focusing on diversity recruitment within an academic setting\, a context where hiring and promoting women and URM members continues to be a challenge. In the first two studies\, we utilized and extend homophily theory to explain how and why the demographic composition of the recruitment team can contribute to attracting more women and URM candidates. In the third study\, we examined how and why diversity recruitment strategies can have negative effects for URM applicants

DESCRIPTION:Two day workshop on Water Diplomacy in the Middle East: Israel\, Jordan and Palestine run by Victoria Pebbles.\n\nPopular news coverage of the Middle East rarely touches on issues of water. Perceptions of ubiquitous chaos prevail\, yet people who live there must carry on with their daily lives where water is central to meeting basic needs. Where does the water in Israel\, Jordan and Palestine come from and how are water resources in this region managed? This workshop will address these questions and explore the concept of “water diplomacy” and its application in this region of the Middle East. They will gain insights into the laws\, institutions and other means of governance that impact water resource management and how they are working. Equipped with this information\, students will engage in rotational breakouts where they will represent each of the parties (Israel\, Jordan and Palestine) and be tasked with identifying mechanisms that could be implemented to enable more sustainable water management in the region. \n\n*Participants are required to attend both sessions. The sign up will close on November 1 at noon. \n**Should sign up exceed the capacity\, participants will be selected at random via lottery. \nPre workshop readings: will be provided a week before the workshop.Lunch and snacks will be provided.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Confining or Not?
DESCRIPTION:The problem of Color Confinement in Yang-Mills theory is one of the deepest problems in theoretical physics. There is convincing numerical evidence from Lattice Gauge Theory\, yet the proof of Confinement in Asymptotically Free theories has not been found. I will briefly introduce the Confinement problem and review some results on large N theories using the gauge/gravity duality. I will then discuss two-dimensional SU(N) theory coupled to an adjoint Majorana fermion. I will show that\, when the adjoint mass is sent to zero\, the spectrum retains a mass gap but the confinement disappears. Using the Discretized Light-Cone Quantization\, I will discuss the spectrum of color singlet states and exhibit certain threshold states. Similar threshold states are also present in a model with a massless adjoint and a massive fundamental fermion. They provide new evidence for the lack of confinement. When the adjoint mass is turned on\, the theory becomes confining\, and the spectrum of bound states becomes discrete.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Religion and Materiality: Re-thinking a Complex Relation from the Angle of Food
DESCRIPTION:The concern of the material turn in the study of religion is to allow for fresh\, detailed and conceptually challenging empirical research that lends itself to comparison. Compared to objects\, images or buildings\, so far food has received little attention in this research strand. Exploring Feuerbach’s ideas about the stomach as the basis for his materialist philosophy\, I argue that food is a material form that allows us to throw new light on the physical and corporeal dimensions of religion. I explore the possibilities for research that arise from a focus on food by turning to a collection of legba-figures that were taken from their site of origin among the Ewe in Ghana and Togo to the Übersee-Museum Bremen\, Germany. My main concern is to explore how food – as a material form at the core of how humans relate to and are part of the world – is a key focus for research aiming to fold materiality back into our understanding of religion.\n\n \n\nBirgit Meyer (PhD in Anthropology\, 1995) is Professor of Religious Studies at Utrecht University\, the Netherlands. Trained as a cultural anthropologist\, she studies religion from a material and postcolonial angle\, seeking to synthesize grounded fieldwork and theoretical reflection in a multidisciplinary setting. Recent book publications include Figuration and Sensations of the Unseen in Judaism\, Christianity and Islam: Contested Desires (2019\, coedited with Terje Stordalen)\, and Refugees and Religion. Ethnographic Studies of Global Trajectories (2021\, coedited with Peter van der Veer). SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: What Controls Dissolved Organic Matter Composition in Marsh-Dominated Estuaries?
DESCRIPTION:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a large and complex mixture of compounds with source inputs that differ with location\, season\, and environmental conditions. We investigated how DOM composition changes both spatially and temporally along a marsh-dominated estuary off the southeastern U.S.\, and how it influences microbial processing. Surface samples were collected throughout the estuary from September 2015 to January 2018\, and bulk\, optical\, and molecular analyses were conducted on samples before and after dark incubations. Results showed that river discharge was the primary driver changing the DOM composition at the mouth of the Altamaha River. For discharge higher than ~ 150 m3 s-1\, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and the terrigenous character of the DOM increased approximately linearly with river flow. For low discharge conditions\, a clear signature of salt marsh-derived compounds was observed in the river. The Georgia coast was hit by Hurricane Matthew in October 2016 and Hurricane Irma in September 2017\, which resulted in a large input of carbon to the estuary. The DOC concentration was ~ 4 times higher than average values and DOM composition was more aromatic with a stronger terrigenous signature compared to the seasonal maximum. Interesting\, microbial degradation of DOC was strongly influenced by DOM composition\, with increased degradation rates for DOM with a larger terrigenous character. This suggests that extreme events substantially impact DOM quantity and quality in estuarine regions. Since storm events are becoming more common in the area\, the results of this study have implications for composition and processing of DOM prior to export to the Atlantic Ocean.

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Art Exhibition Reception: Animal/Vegetable/Mineral
DESCRIPTION:There will be a reception for artist Susan Crowell's Animal/Vegetable/Mineral exhibit on November 12 from 4-6pm. The exhibit will be on display at the RC Art Galley from October 1 through November 12.\n\nIn this exhibit\, Residential College and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design Professor of Art Susan Crowell presents\, among other works\, a series of wall plaques depicting endangered species. In Professor Crowell's effort to\, \"...question our interactions with the animal world and our impact upon it\,\" she has installed images of elephants and donkeys as protagonists and antagonists in political struggle\, and polar bears as victims of global warming.\n\n\"Animal/ Vegetable/Mineral presents an occasion to speak about my most compelling interests—plants and animals--within the mineral rubrics of clay\,\" she says.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Vallauris in Vallauris\, France\, where she exhibited her work in La chapelle de la place Lisnard that October.\n\nFor ten years\, Crowell’s research and artistic practice has focused upon pollen forms and the process of pollination.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CSAS Lecture | The Modern Cosmopolis: Sovereignty\, Cosmology and the Extrapolitical
DESCRIPTION:Sheldon Pollock’s vision of a “Cosmopolis\,” a vision of power (and culture) transcending\, and encompassing\, particular systems of rule and power\, has shaped extensive efforts by historians of South Asia to delineate other cosmopolises\, notably the Persian cosmopolis that encompassed the Mughal empire. This presentation uses this concept to rethink the nature of modernity\, particularly with respect to sovereignty\, politics\, and control over nature. The talk will begin with a discussion of the history of large-scale water control in the British colonial period as an entrée into a discussion of the ways that modern sovereignty has developed at the intersection between new forms of state political power and cosmological visions of the “extrapolitical\,” that is\, power flows conceived as transcending the category of politics itself. Shaped not only by developing scientific explanations of energy flows in the universe\, but also by the distinctive understandings of human consciousness underlying this modern cosmological vision\, the concept of the “extrapolitical” has been central to modern sovereignty. But such conceptions of sovereignty\, as in earlier cosmopolises\, have always played out at the intersection between the “extrapolitical” and the realities of worldly politics and power. The talk will include a brief excursion into Big History to discuss how some historians have increasingly attempted\, with limited success\, to bring the narratives of politics and of the “extrapolitical” together.\n \n David Gilmartin is Distinguished Professor of History at North Carolina State University. His research interests focus on the intersections between the history of British imperialism in South Asia and the development of modern politics\, environment\, and forms of rule. His most recent books are *Blood and Water: The Indus River Basin in Modern History* (2015)\, examining the intersection between modern environmental and political history\, and *South Asian Sovereignty: The Conundrum of Worldly Power* (2020)\, co-edited with Pamela Price and Arild Ruud. His current research focuses on the legal history of India's electoral institutions as they have evolved from a colonial past\, and on the ways these institutions have changed in relation to evolving visions of the people’s sovereignty. Earlier works include\, *Civilization and Modernity: Narrating the Creation of Pakistan* (2014)\; *Beyond Turk and Hindu: Rethinking Religious Identities in Islamicate South Asia*\, co-edited with Bruce Lawrence (2000)\; and *Empire and Islam: Punjab and the Making of Pakistan* (1988).\n\nPlease register in advance for this zoom webinar here: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUod-irqzIvE9V08VP6lbJYnrR0Pf0CtTfw\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Performance:Funny Girl
DESCRIPTION:Campus guests are expected to complete ResponsiBLUE Guest\, the daily COVID-19 symptom check tool\, prior to accessing campus buildings. U-M policy also requires all individuals — both vaccinated and unvaccinated — to wear a face covering while in a campus building or on campus transit.\n\nThis Broadway classic explores the life and career of the indomitable Jewish actress and comedian Fanny Brice\, and her relationship with the professional gambler Nick Arnstein. This love letter to performers is a re-evaluation of fame\, the desire for love and connection\, and what “beauty” really is. FUNNY GIRL\, with one of the most iconic scores of all time by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill\, and book by Isobel Lennart\, is an inspiring story of identity\, image\, ambition\, and a funny girl finding her way to the stage to become the greatest star. This fall\, MUSKET audiences are the luckiest people in the world.\n\nMUSKET offers FREE TICKETS to the Indigenous tribal communities of the Three Fire Peoples — the Ojibwe\, Odawa\, and Potawatomi\, the traditional Territories of which The University of Michigan resides on. As we continue live theatre on these territories\, we acknowledge that The Power Center for the Performing Arts stands on land that has been obtained through the mistreatment and violence against Indigenous peoples. Although our acknowledgements do not change the past or present harms done to these communities\, our acknowledgment reaffirms the ancestral ties to the land and the people that make our venues possible. Please email musket.prod@umich.edu to access your complimentary ticket.

SUMMARY:Performance:Men On Boats
DESCRIPTION:Department of Theatre & Drama \n\nWritten by Jaclyn Backhaus\nDirected by Emily Lyon (BFA ‵13\, directing)\n\nIn 1869\, a team of 10 men led by naturalist John Wesley Powell set out on an expedition to catalogue the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon—the first white settlers to do so. In 2015\, playwright Jaclyn Backhaus set out to satirize the expedition and its bold yet arrogant explorers in a comedic tour-de-force that Time Out New York called a “thrilling\, gender-flipped slice of manifest destiny.” \n\nWith a cast made up entirely of women\, Men on Boats pokes fun at what New York Magazine calls the explorers’ “cockiness and cluelessness” in their attempts to exert their control on an unfamiliar (and already populated) environment. “The tone is comic\, but never cute or camp\,” says the New York Times. “And ultimately\, you feel\, the play respects its bold if fallible pioneers\, in all their natural bravery and fearfulness.”

He continues to reach further into his guitar & pen while stretching the form of what his own music can be. His current trio combines Porter’s acoustic and electric fret work with the dynamic drumming of longtime collaborator Dave Schoepke\, and recent band addition Eric Madunic on Bass & vocals. Their live sound is a blend of grit\, soul & space that moves seamlessly from folk & bluesy Americana to alt and progressive rock in service of Porter’s original tunes.
