NR.\r\nFree | Open to the public | In Korean with English subtitles\r\n\r\nThe narrator writes a letter to the ghost of his grandfather wondering if his recurring childhood nightmare of rusted metallic image is related to the family history. After running a scrap metal factory in Tokyo during World War II, his grandfather ended up in Cheonggyecheon of Seoul where rundown small scale metal workshops still exist amidst the gentrifying city. The exhibition centers on four key topics of inquiry: Michigan\u2019s length of sentencing and overcrowding in prisons; the impact of incarceration on women; youth incarceration; and the dangers of COVID-19.\r\n\r\nThe exhibition features artists, poets, and storytellers of great achievement. The majority of these artists are either currently or formerly incarcerated. Their works on view invite us to consider the role art-making plays in prisons as a liberating force, and offer unique perspectives on the experience of incarceration. The works also invite us to approach the subject of incarceration with an open mind. In July 2020, Envision jurors Carla Acevedo-Yates, Curator, MCA Chicago; Ken Aptekar (BFA '73), Artist; and Loring Randolph (BFA '04), Director, Frieze New York; gathered virtually to review the submissions. \nAfter evaluating 259 submissions from across the state, the jurors selected five finalists to receive a group exhibition at Stamps Gallery. \nOn December 10, 2021, one finalist will be named the 2021 Envision Award recipient, receiving a cash prize. \nThe exhibition will tour to different venues in Michigan, including the Crooked Tree Art Center in Traverse City. \nEnvision Finalists\nNayda Collazo-Llorens examines the way in which we perceive and process information, dealing with concepts of navigation, memory, language, hyperconnectivity and noise through her interdisciplinary creative practice. The artist, raised in Indiana and based in Nashville, brings all of his experiences and beliefs into each song he creates, something that is especially true now that he\u2019s the father of two young girls.\r\n\r\nJon released his debut album, Indiana, in 2007 on Island Def Jam, attracting fans with his heartfelt, hook-laden songwriting and impassioned delivery. He\u2019s released five full-lengths in the twelve years since and revealed a true evolution in both his piano playing and singing. He\u2019s played shows with Billy Joel, Kelly Clarkson and Adele, collaborated with longtime friend Sara Bareilles, co-written with Demi Lovato and even performed at the Academy Awards in 2008. Jon\u2019s album, Like Us, dropped in October of 2015 via Razor & Tie, and he spent the past few years touring extensively before heading back into his Nashville studio to work on new music. In November of 2018 Jon released his album Angst & Grace which features \u201cStill My Girl\u201d written for his youngest daughter.\r\n\r\nAnother project started in 2018 is his Dueling Pianos video series. Every episode features a new guest artist and they perform mashups of never been heard arrangements\r\n\r\nAs with everything he does, Jon\u2019s goal is to create connections.
