SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Culture Still Matters: Building Your Cultural Competence in a Globalized World
DESCRIPTION:Navigating business relationships\, particularly cross-cultural ones\, can feel like moving through a minefield\, sidestepping explosives that could instantly derail any progress. But it doesn’t need to be that way.\n\nJohn Branch\, professor of marketing and international business at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business and faculty for the school’s Cross-Cultural Business course\, along with Amy Gillett\, vice president of education at the William Davidson Institute at the University of Michigan and co-creator of the Business & Culture virtual exchange\, advise both professionals and business students on increasing their cultural competency. On Nov. 16\, they will host a candid and interactive session around maneuvering these cross-cultural relationships.\n\nJoin Branch and Gillett’s virtual discussion on cultural competency to share your stories of cultural gaffes and/or successes\, discover what it takes to prepare for better cross-cultural interactions\, and learn from the breadth of cultural exchanges that have gone wrong — and right — across the business world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles-based artist Shizu Saldamando was born in 1978 to parents of Mexican-American and Japanese-American descent and raised in San Francisco’s Mission District. Saldamando merges painting and collage\, often using origami paper\, glitter\, or gold leaf in her compositions\, many of which are painted on wood or found surfaces. Her modern portraits and innovative methods challenge social constructs pertaining to individual and collective identity within the broader context of the “American Portrait.” Saldamando’s visual biographies\, which use her friends\, family\, and fellow members of the Chicanx creative community in Los Angeles\, create new ways of seeing and being seen.\n\nOn November 2\, 6:30-8pm\, Shizu Saldamando talks to curator Amanda Krugliak about Shizu's artistic practice and her exhibition *When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine*.\n\nAbout the artist: Shizu Saldamando is an LA based mixed media artist with an emphasis on portraiture. She received her B.A. from UCLA’s School of Arts and Architecture and her M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally and experiments with a broad range of surfaces and materials. Saldamando’s practice employs tattooing\, video\, painting and drawing on canvas\, wood\, paper\, and cloth. The work functions as homage\, as well as documentation\, of friends and peers within artistic and musical subcultures around the Los Angeles metropolitan area. She is currently represented by Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles.\n\nShizu Saldamando is the 2021 Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Yelping From Home Tech Talk Series
DESCRIPTION:Talk: Solving Mysterious Issues using Common Debugging Principles\n\nSince we started our first successful execution of “hello world” during our first programming assignment to maintain or roll out complex product and infrastructure changes\, debugging has become an integral partof an engineer’s journey. Lack of sufficient logging\, mysterious behaviours of systems\, the inability to add a live-debugger\, and the complexity of components involved in a single change can all make debugging a frustrating\, challenging\, time-consuming\, and at times a discouraging and non-rewarding process. However\, knowing some common debugging principles can help you identify root-causes in a more structured\, timely\, and playful way.\n\nIn this presentation\, I will illustrate some common debugging principles using various examples\, such as from mysterious issues we faced using Spark on large scale data engineering problems at Yelp. I will share how this journey can help design test set-ups for faster debugging iterations. I will also demonstrate how these mysterious situations and debugging principles can help propel the learning process for you and your teams\, as these principles can be extrapolated across most complex industry-wide systems.\n\nSpeaker:\nManpreet Singh is a software engineer at Yelp whohas led multiple streaming and batch infrastructure projects. His team isresponsible for building and maintaining Yelp’s machine learning infrastructure and data mining tools. The components owned are powered by Spark\, Kubernetes\, and JupyterHub\, an interactive notebook search and archiving tool. These components collectively handle the building of hundreds of ML models and the publishing and processing of billions of messages per day. In his time at Yelp\, he has spearheaded the efforts on multiple Kafka cluster upgrades\, such as re-architecturing Kafka clusters to enable on-demand Spark cluster for ML and data mining applications\, upgrading Spark to the latest versions\, maintaining Spark infrastructure platform\, and replacing the Spark job scheduler from Mesos to native Kubernetes. He has also mentored many engineers.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Complex Systems Virtual Seminar | The role of time-varying viral shedding in modeling environmental surveillance of a poliovirus outbreak
DESCRIPTION:ZOOM MEETING\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96616169868\nPasscode: CSCS [all caps]\n\nAbstract: Environmental pathogen surveillance is a sensitive tool that can detect early-stage outbreaks and has become an important part of the global effort to eradicate polio. While longitudinal environmental surveillance has the potential to inform outbreak dynamics\, interpretation can be difficult because the relationship between population infection incidence and viral load in wastewater depends both on the fraction of the population shedding and the time-varying shedding intensity. We developed a mathematical model of time-varying poliovirus shedding intensity consistent with expert opinion across a range of immunization states. Incorporating this shedding model into an infectious disease transmission model\, we analyzed quantitative\, polymerase chain reaction cycle threshold data from seven sites during the 2013 Israeli polio outbreak. Compared to a constant shedding model\, our time-varying shedding model estimated a larger but slower peak (4 weeks later)\, resulting in a greater fraction of the population vaccinated and a lower cumulative incidence (46% vaccinated and 51% infected by the end of the outbreak\, compared to 24% and 74% in the constant shedding scenario). We also estimated the population shed virus for an average of 29 days (95% CI 28-31). Our estimate of polio shedding duration is longer than expert opinion had suggested for a population that was purported to have received three or more inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) doses\, indicating that IPV may not affect shedding duration. Using realistic models of time-varying shedding coupled with longitudinal environmental surveillance will improve our understanding of outbreak dynamics of poliovirus or other pathogens\, such as SARS-CoV-2.

SUMMARY:Other:Polymers and functional graphenic materials as stem cell instructive scaffolds for bone regeneration
DESCRIPTION:The Sydlik group at Carnegie Mellon uses chemical signals and intelligently designed materials to instruct bone regeneration. To do this\, we use polymers and functional graphenic materials (FGMs) to create new biomaterials that offer tunable mechanical properties\, degradability\, and surface chemistry\, which together can be used to control bioactivity. FGMs\, are degradable in in vivo\, but the application of FGMs as biomaterials have been limited due to insufficient control of the chemical interface and limited processing methods. To address this\, the Sydlik group has developed new methods to covalently bind polymers and other biomimetic moieties to the surface of FGMs using classic organic reactions. Using these novel organic transformations\, we can impart surface functionalization. This produces FGMs with tunable surface chemistry\, allowing installation of cell instructive moieties\, and improved mechanical properties arising from graphene reduction. We have developed FGMs that inherently induce osteogenesis in vitro and in vivo. Specifically\, our modified Arbuzov reaction couples polyphosphate on the GO backbone with control over a variety of bioinstructive counter ions (Ca2+\, K+\, Li+\, Mg2+\, or Na+). Ca2+\, Li+\, Mg2+\, and PO4-. These ions are known to be inducerons\, or small ions that encourage the osteogeneic differentiation of stem cells. Further\, we have shown that calcium phosphate graphene (CaPG) induces osteogenesis in vivo in a mouse model. These materials are designed to degrade in water\, and to release signals known to drive regenerative healing in their process of degradation. We have also developed a new class of peptide-graphene covalent conjugate and are working to show that FGMs can serve as intrinsically inductive\, autodegradable scaffolds for bone regeneration in vivo.\nStefanie Sydlik (Carnegie Mellon University)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Biopsychology Colloquium: Benefits and limits of ketamine therapy in depression
DESCRIPTION:Clinical depression can be highly treatment resistant in some cases\, but ketamine has been shown to relieve depressive symptoms in even many treatment-refractory cases. Ketamine appears to work via a novel mechanism since it 1) treats many patients not affected by other treatments and 2) has a temporal profile of action unlike any other medication: a drug metabolized within hours has rapid-onset action that lasts for days. However\, despite it's efficacy over initial weeks of treatment\, over months\, it's efficacy falls off and further work is needed to best determine how to use this short and medium term efficacy\, or to determine how to lengthen it. Importantly\, the new mechanism of action of ketamine opens up new avenues to understand the mechanisms of depression\, which may lead to yet more novel therapies.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Framing China: Visual Technologies\, Missionary Modernity\, and Transnational Visions in Sino-US Encounters
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance for this Zoom webinar here: https://myumi.ch/qgMwy\n\nCameras and visual technologies accompanied American missionaries as they undertook cultural\, political\, and religious projects in Republican China through the first years of the People’s Republic. These evolving visual practices and products\, however\, ultimately escaped their missionary mold and entered global imaginations\, coloring American views of modern China alongside Chinese engagements with the world. In this talk\, Professor Ho explores intersections between image-making\, contested identities\, and transnational ways of seeing – many of which transformed 20th century Sino-US encounters on both sides of the lens.\n \n Joseph W. Ho is Assistant Professor of History and Associate Director of the Prentiss M. Brown Honors Program at Albion College\, as well as a Center Associate at the LRCCS. His research concerns transnational visual culture\, histories of photography and film\, global Christianity\, and Sino-US experiences in modern East Asia. Professor Ho is the co-editor of \"War and Occupation in China: The Letters of an American Missionary from Hangzhou\, 1937-1938\" (Lehigh University Press\, 2017) and the author of \"Developing Mission: Photography\, Filmmaking\, and American Missionaries in Modern China\" (Cornell University Press\, 2021).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IOE JOB TALK PRACTICE: Treating Some Difficulties in Nonlinear Discrete Optimization - Luze Xu
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Abstract:\nMany practical engineering problems\, for example\, in the areas of power systems\, transportation and data science\, have physical aspects that are naturally modeled by smooth nonlinear functions\, as well as design aspects that are often modeled via discrete decision variables. By combining ideas from continuous and discrete optimization\, research in nonlinear discrete optimization seeks to develop efficient and scalable exact or approximate algorithm frameworks attacking these challenging models. I have explored multiple facets of this interdisciplinary area\, including mixed-integer models (both linear and nonlinear) and sparse generalized inverses. In this talk\, I will present a few topics that I have worked on during my PhD. In the first part of the talk\, I will talk about a more tractable relaxation of a mixed-integer nonlinear model for disjunctions. Volume is used as a measure of tightness to compare and investigate the relaxation quality. In the second part of the talk\, I will introduce the sparse generalized inverses for least-squares problem and present an efficient and practical local-search algorithm to construct an approximate sparse generalized inverse with nice properties. In the third part of the talk\, I will present some new bounds on the distance between optimal solutions of integer programming and its linear relaxation.\n\nPresenter Bio:\nLuze Xu is currently a Ph.D. student in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan\, advised by Professor Jon Lee. He received his undergraduate degree in Computational and Applied Mathematics from Peking University. His research interests include global optimization\, integer programming\, and mixed integer nonlinear programming. Luze has been awarded IOE Katta Murty Prize for Best Research Paper on Optimization in 2018\, 2020.

SUMMARY:Other:Assessing Hybrid Molecular Platforms for Next Generation Quantum Technologies
DESCRIPTION:Quantum control over light and matter is poised to enable future capabilities beyond the reach of current technologies in chemical synthesis\, energy harvesting\, and information processing and storage. Despite this promise\, the fundamental physical drivers of quantum control in proposed platforms remain unclear. In this talk\, I will present results from fundamental studies of structure-property relationships in two disparate hybrid molecular systems of emerging interest to the chemistry community. First\, I will present results from our studies on the chemistry and properties of mid-gap states formed in self-assembled quantum nanostructures. These results indicate synthetic routes to the deterministic design of structural defects for the emission of narrowband light spectra central to solution-processed single photon sources and entangled photon generation in the established telecommunications band. Second\, I will present results in the design\, fabrication\, and characterization of cavity polariton samples containing single and multiple chromophores. These results suggest the entanglement of light and matter states mediated by polariton formation opens new avenues to control ultrafast molecular photophysics and intermolecular interactions on truly quantum footing. These studies demonstrate the wealth of fundamental physical information central to the development of next generation molecular quantum technologies that can be attained from informed materials design and advanced spectroscopic characterization.\nAaron S. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | \nPrecision Spectroscopy of Rb 5D_{3/2} Atoms in an Optical Lattice
DESCRIPTION:Practical applications of the 5DJ levels of Rb include their role in portable\, vapor-cell atomic clocks [1] and the definition of the meter [2]. I will outline a recent experiment where simultaneous measurements of the 5D_{3/2} state’s dynamic polarizability and photoionization (PI) cross section at 1.064 μm are made using laser spectroscopy. In this experiment\, cold ^{85}Rb atoms are trapped in a deep\, 1.064-μm optical lattice of ~10^5 photon recoils and probed with two lasers scanning over the D1 and 5P_{1/2}-to-5D_{3/2} lines. Detection of the 5D_{3/2} population as a function of the laser detunings is achieved by collecting and counting photo-ions. This procedure yields a dynamic scalar polarizability of -524(17) atomic units and PI cross section of 44(1) Mb.\n\n[1] Kyle W. Martin\, Gretchen Phelps\, Nathan D. Lemke\, Matthew S. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Standing at the Border: Migration\, Narrative\, and the Futures of Sanctuary\, a presentation by Yogita Goyal.
DESCRIPTION:If we were to heed Edward Said’s call to see our age as “the age of the refugee\, the displaced person\, mass immigration\,” we would need to reimage identity\, citizenship\, and human rights on global and intimate scales. In this talk\, I focus on contemporary African diaspora writers who rethink existing discourses of home\, sanctuary\, and fugitivity by revising occluded histories and imagining new futures. The memorial aesthetics of slavery (elaborated by Toni Morrison\, Octavia Butler\, Colson Whitehead\, among many others) help us explore new geographies of belonging by reframing the question of migration (too often presented simply as a crisis without cause) in relation to longer histories of racial dispossession. While their works are often acclaimed as intervening into discourses of African victimhood or as creative adaptations of the slave\npast in the U.S context\, they have not been seen as proposing a new language for thinking about borders and citizenship in a frame beyond nation-states. My paper takes up that task\, exploring not just the contributions of individual literary works\, but examining how their rethinking of political life makes available new and iconoclastic epistemologies of freedom and justice.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Roundtable Discussion. Democratic Ceilings
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Aram Hur\, Assistant Professor of Political Science\, University of Missouri\; Gerardo L. Munck\, Professor of Political Science and International Relations\, University of Southern California\; Grigore Pop-Eleches\, Professor of Politics and International Affairs\, Princeton University\; Daniel Treisman\, Professor of Political Science\, UCLA \nRespondent: Ricarda Hammer\, WCED Postdoctoral Fellow \nModerator: Dan Slater\, WCED Director\n\nFollowing transitions to democracy in the 1980s and 1990s\, many countries have ceased making democratic progress. They have failed to improve the quality of their democracy even after being democracies for several decades. They have hit a democratic ceiling. The collection of papers offer an alternative to the influential “erosion narrative” and draw attention to the distinct problem of democratic ceilings. The papers consider the evolution of democracy on a global scale and analyze in depth cases in East Asia\, Latin America\, and East-Central Europe. They consider various factors (economic development\, nationalism\, patrimonialism\, and citizen attitudes) that determine why democratic progress has stalled. Jointly\, they show that scholarship on democracy should treat the problem of democratic ceilings as a central problem in global politics.\n\nRegistration for this Zoom webinar is required at https://myumi.ch/Qe7w7\n \n***\nAram Hur’s research focuses on nationalism and democracy in East Asia\, with particular emphasis on issues of identity change\, integration\, and democratic support in the Korean peninsula and Taiwan. Her work has been published in the *British Journal of Political Science*\, *Comparative Politics*\, *Electoral Studies*\, and the *Journal of East Asian Studies*.\n \nGerardo Munck's research focuses on political regimes and democracy\, methodology\, and Latin America. His forthcoming and most recent books include *Latin American Politics and Society: A Comparative and Historical Analysis* (with Juan Pablo Luna\; Cambridge\, forthcoming\, 2022)\; *Critical Junctures and Historical Legacies: Insights and Methods for Comparative Social Science* (edited with David Collier\; Rowman & Littlefield\, forthcoming\, 2022)\; and *A Middle-Quality Institutional Trap: Democracy and State Capacity in Latin America* (with Sebastián Mazzuca\, Cambridge\, 2020).\n \nGrigore Pop-Eleches' main research interests lie at the intersection between comparative and international political economy with a particular interest in Eastern Europe and Latin America. He is the author of two books: *From Economic Crisis to Reform: IMF Programs in Latin America and Eastern Europe* (Princeton University Press\, 2009) and *Communism's Shadow: Historical Legacies and Contemporary Political Attitudes* (joint with Joshua A. Tucker\, Princeton University Press\, 2017).\n \nDaniel Treisman’s work focuses on Russian politics and economics and comparative political economy. He has published four books and many articles in leading political science and economics journals including *The American Political Science Review* and *The American Economic Review*\, as well as in the public affairs journals *Foreign Affairs* and *Foreign Policy*.\n \nRicarda Hammer's research interests lie at the intersection of global\, historical\, and postcolonial sociology. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from Brown University in 2021\, and she is currently working on her book manuscript\, “Citizenship and Colonial Difference: The Racial Politics of Rights and Rule across the Black Atlantic.”\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Rally / Mass Meeting:New England Literature Program (NELP) Mass Meeting
DESCRIPTION:After having to cancel NELP in 2020\, it was so good to be back in the woods with our students last spring—and they were just thrilled to have the experience of living and learning (and climbing mountains!) together in such an intimate setting after a year of online classes. We're not yet sure what NELP 2022 will look like exactly\, but we learned in 2021 how to do the program with modifications allowing us to accommodate a variety of circumstances\, and so our planning for this spring is running at full steam—though we anticipate minimal changes to the program in 2022.\n\nIf you’d like to learn more about NELP\, please join us for the Mass Meeting\, where the previous year’s NELP participants come out to describe the program to those who might be interested in applying\; they do a much better job than a flyer or the website can of painting a picture of what life at NELP is like\, and it’s by far the most helpful way for prospective students to figure out whether the program is right for them. And if you can’t make it for the November Mass Meeting\, we’ll have a smaller Informational Meeting in December.\n\nAric Knuth\, Director\, NELP

DESCRIPTION:*By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.*\n\nYou may have encountered Carsie Blanton through her great John Prine tribute that circulated earlier this year\, but there's a lot more to this New Orleans songstress than that. \"Like the singer-songwriters she admires\, Carsie Blanton is making folk-based music that prizes wordplay and an antic sense of humor. You can hear jazz\, Motown and power pop in her melodies and phrasing\, which makes her stuff delightfully surprising but doesn't help her in commercial categorization\,\" says Ken Tucker of NPR. \"Her tone never becomes cute because she phrases with such purpose. And what she's talking about is almost always earthy if not downright down and dirty.\" Carsie has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe since 2006\, as a headliner and as support for Paul Simon\, The Wood Brothers\, The Weepies\, Shawn Colvin and many more. Her live performances\, which include material from every album\, have been praised for their wit\, humor\, and captivating charm.
