SUMMARY:Exhibition:When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles-based artist Shizu Saldamando was born in 1978 to parents of Mexican-American and Japanese-American descent and raised in San Francisco’s Mission District. Saldamando merges painting and collage\, often using origami paper\, glitter\, or gold leaf in her compositions\, many of which are painted on wood or found surfaces. Her modern portraits and innovative methods challenge social constructs pertaining to individual and collective identity within the broader context of the “American Portrait.” Saldamando’s visual biographies\, which use her friends\, family\, and fellow members of the Chicanx creative community in Los Angeles\, create new ways of seeing and being seen.\n\nOn November 2\, 6:30-8pm\, Shizu Saldamando talks to curator Amanda Krugliak about Shizu's artistic practice and her exhibition *When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine*.\n\nAbout the artist: Shizu Saldamando is an LA based mixed media artist with an emphasis on portraiture. She received her B.A. from UCLA’s School of Arts and Architecture and her M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally and experiments with a broad range of surfaces and materials. Saldamando’s practice employs tattooing\, video\, painting and drawing on canvas\, wood\, paper\, and cloth. The work functions as homage\, as well as documentation\, of friends and peers within artistic and musical subcultures around the Los Angeles metropolitan area. She is currently represented by Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles.\n\nShizu Saldamando is the 2021 Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:This exhibt runs through December 12\, 2021.\n\nMaking art can be a transformative experience. It helps us to confront and address some of the most pressing issues of our time. Art has the power to shift the way we see and understand the world around us\, and the worlds within us. Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan invites us to consider these qualities of art\, while also grappling with the carceral system and the many ways it affects the lives of all of us.\n\nCurrently there are approximately 2.2 million people incarcerated in the United States\, and in Michigan\, there are roughly 33\,000 residents currently serving time in the prison system. Working together with a coalition of more than a dozen organizations and Michigan State University units and departments\, Free Your Mind explores the inner worlds of incarcerated individuals and the fundamental issues that shape conversations around incarceration today. The exhibition centers on four key topics of inquiry: Michigan’s length of sentencing and overcrowding in prisons\; the impact of incarceration on women\; youth incarceration\; and the dangers of COVID-19.\n\nThe exhibition features artists\, poets\, and storytellers of great achievement. The majority of these artists are either currently or formerly incarcerated. Their works on view invite us to consider the role art-making plays in prisons as a liberating force\, and offer unique perspectives on the experience of incarceration. The works also invite us to approach the subject of incarceration with an open mind. Free Your Mind aims to cultivate a greater sense of empathy for those directly impacted by incarceration and an understanding that their growth as individuals is linked to the greater health of the society we all live in\, together.\n\nFree Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan is organized by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University and curated by Steven L. Bridges\, Senior Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs\, and Janie Paul\, Senior Curator and Cofounder\, Annual Exhibitions of Art by Michigan Prisoners\, a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan. Support for this exhibition is provided by the Eli and Edythe Broad endowed exhibitions fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition
DESCRIPTION:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition features the work of artists in the Linkage Project\, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) that affirms the creativity of adults who have returned from incarceration. The artists previously exhibited their work at PCAP's Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners at the University of Michigan. For some\, this exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Lab is the first opportunity to show their work since regaining their freedom. Art-making has helped these artists during the dark years of their incarceration\, and we hope the exhibition inspires visitors to learn more about how to support formerly incarcerated people reconnecting with their communities.\n\nMartín Vargas\, artist and curator of this exhibition\, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work\, but also during select Art Lab studio hours\, which will feature several of the artists working in person.\n\nConnections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition is organized by the Linkage Project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. The exhibition is curated by Martín Vargas\, Vanessa Mayesky\, Scott Tompkins\, Nico Slowik\, Kimiko Uyeda\, and Jenna VanFleteren.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CSAAW Seminar | Cybersociety without cyborgs
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This will be a discussion of some recent work in progress\, not a talk. Current machine learning and statistical practice relies on the particular assumption that an individual's features are intrinsic properties separated from the processes that summon forth the featurized individual in the first place. Working under this paradigm makes analysis amenable\, but hinders accuracy in its effective goal of modeling real world systems. A notable example can be found in the recent research interest of \"fairness\" in machine learning\, in which discrimination based on certain categories (race\, gender\, class\, etc.) is intended to be avoided. The limitations surface when these categories are assumed ontologically independent of other ascribed properties of the individual\, and pre-existent to the same mechanism which is analyzing or making inference on them. To deconvolve these assumptions and reformulate our practice\, we will take race as an example and discuss ways in which racial categories\, understood from different theories of race\, can be better described as mathematical \"structures of the system\"\, in opposition to atomic \"properties of the individual\". We will discuss the benefits\, challenges\, and potential of these views for non harmful techne of category-based machine learning and causal inference.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Lemur love and the biology of social bonding
DESCRIPTION:The Evolution and Human Adaptation Program (EHAP) at the University of Michigan is proud to present our fall 2021 speaker series:\n\nNote: This talk will take place in-person at the Michigan League - Henderson Room (3rd Floor) and also available via livestream.\n\nWhat explains diversity in mammalian social systems? Many of the raw neural ingredients proximally responsible for adaptive social behavior are shared across vertebrates\, yet these ingredients\, including endocrine signaling pathways\, are differentially organized into networks across species. Foundational work in social neuroscience proposes that this differential organization explains broad differences in the structure of animal societies\, including in the domains of mating arrangements and intersexual dominance relations. In this talk\, I present a selection of research my collaborators and I have conducted over the last few years\, in which we ask what lemur behavior\, hormones\, and anatomy can tell us about the translation of rodent-heavy theoretical frameworks to exceptional animal models.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Social Brown Bag:
DESCRIPTION:Wilson\n\nTitle:\nIt ain’t (just) about how hard you hit: Perceived pain sensitivity and race as determinants of physical formidability\n\nAbstract:\nFormidability is a set of summary evaluations that help individuals assess the physical threats posed by potentially agonistic others. Previous work has demonstrated a constellation of situational (e.g.\, whether someone is holding a weapon) and individual (e.g.\, target sex) factors that contribute to formidability representations. In this talk\, I will focus on how two other factors\, perceived sensitivity to pain and target race\, jointly fit into this constellation. Pulling from evolutionary theories on threat management\, I will present three studies that demonstrate (1) there is a bi-directional relationship between perceptions of pain sensitivity and physical formidability and (2) this relationship is represented in negative racialized stereotypes about Black men.\n\nSakura\n\nTitle: \nStress Among International Students in Japan During COVID: Thematic Analysis\n\nAbstract:\nInternational students are thought to be particularly hard-hit by the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although students at Japanese language institutes (i.e. schools that primarily teach Japanese to foreign students) are the second largest subgroup of international students in Japan\, behind undergraduates\, they are underrepresented in research on the mental health of international students. This study aims to identify the major causes of psychological stress\, and the emotion regulation strategies used\, among this subgroup during the pandemic. To this end\, semi-structured interviews were conducted in March 2021 (n = 16). Thematic analysis suggests that participants experienced stress in relation to how the pandemic impacted their already precarious positions as international students in Japan\, and that they used emotion regulation strategies such as problem-solving\, social support\, and distraction.

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar. BOOK TALK: The Spiritual Vernacular of the Early Ottoman Frontier: The Yazıcıoğlu Family
DESCRIPTION:This study follows the lives and ideas of the Yazıcıoğlu brothers Mehmed Yazıcıoğlu and Ahmed Bican\, Sufis of the frontier city of Gelibolu and authors of the most popular religious writings in Ottoman Turkish. The book explores early Ottoman popular piety through the lens of the Yazıcıoğlu brothers. This is the first book-length study in English on the Yazıcıoğlu brothers\, among the most popular vernacular religious writers and thinkers of the early Ottoman period. It also reconstructs the Yazıcıoğlus’ biographies\, assesses the heritage of their language and ideas and analyses the ways these were adapted to their distinct setting. The book furthermore argues that Ottoman popular orthodoxy emerged as a synthesis of a cosmopolitan Islamic canon to address the needs of Turcophone Muslims of the Ottoman lands. It is a contribution to the study of non-elite intellectual life of Ottoman Muslims at the dawn of an imperial age.\n\nCarlos Grenier is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Religious Studies at Florida International University. He recently earned his doctorate in History at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on religion and politics in the late medieval and early modern Islamic worlds. At FIU\, he currently teaches on Islam and other Abrahamic religions. He recently published a number of articles on Ottoman Islam in journals such as Turcica and Archivum Ottomanicum. He is preparing future projects on Sufism and statecraft\, and on sacred-historical narratives in the fifteenth and sixteenth-century Islamic lands.\n\nRegister at: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJcocO6vqTksHtVAyufTKPx5zS6xG7hr7Ndo

The Arab world includes 22 diverse countries stretching from North Africa to Western Asia having varying dispositions with regards to alcohol sale and consumption. The talk will summarize the state of alcohol use research in the Arab world\, and its implications\; describe the experiences/views of Arab adolescents with regards to behavioral and structural determinants of underage drinking\; and discuss effective harm reduction strategies and key implementation considerations.\n\n*The Role of Islam in Public Health Policy on Smoking Cessation*\nIn the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office some 14 years ago\, a ‘religiously inspired approach’ was proposed to combat tobacco use. This promoted a useful debate in the region. The purpose of this talk is to argue the need to identify the role which Islamic beliefs and teachings play (1) in influencing individual motivation to quit smoking and (2) in gaining support for public policies to reduce smoking. Ramadan and Hajj are taken as key points. These\, it is argued\, are times when Muslim religious motivation to abstain from smoking is strongest. I will suggest that the evidence base is not strong enough to adopt such an approach\, which would be unique to this region. Rather\, all of civil society\, including Muslim religious authorities\, should support the efforts of health professionals to encourage smoking cessation.\n\nAbout the Speakers:\nLilian A. Ghandour is a tenured associate professor of epidemiology at the Faculty of Health Sciences\, American University of Beirut (AUB). She holds a PhD from the Department of Mental Health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University\, and a Master of Public Health from AUB. Her research focuses on examining the epidemiology of substance use and mental health in youth\, namely underage drinking\, prescription drug abuse\, and cannabis. Most recently\, her research work has focused on generating local evidence (and mobilize key stakeholders) to push for alcohol harm reduction policies—regulating alcohol availability\, affordability\, marketing/advertising and drink-driving. Her work is published in high-tier international journals\, and has been disseminated in various global conferences.\n \nPeter Walton graduated with masters degrees from both the University of Edinburgh and the University of London\, in History and Latin American Studies respectively. He has taught English as a Foreign Language in Chile (1971-2)\, in Portugal and later in Preston College and in Manchester\, both in the UK. At Preston College\, he was a lecturer on the outreach programme for local Muslim schools.\n\nHis interests are in the fields of public health and education. He co-authored with Saudi colleagues an article in 2018 in the *Journal of Religion and Health* entitled 'Islam and Motivation to Quit Smoking: Public Health Policy Implications. Last year\, he published 'Virtues of the Educator'—a translation and commentary on an address given by Paulo Freire\, the Brazilian activist and educator.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact Kristin Waterbury at waterbuk@umich.edu.\n\nPlease be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Minority Serving Institutions Coffee Chat: Fostering Belonging Through Equity-Minded\, Anti-Racist Course Design
DESCRIPTION:The coffee chat series will serve as a space for scholars and practitioners to share ideas\, best practices\, and other resources related to R1 and Minority Serving Institutions relationships and mechanisms of support for students that transition from MSIs into R1 for graduate and professional education. The series will highlight examples from U-M\, exemplars from across the country\, and scholars and practitioners that explore and implement practices that foster positive experiences and outcomes for students from MSIs.\nThis series is primarily intended for faculty and staff that have existing relationships with MSIs\, or for those who do not but are interested in forming relationships\, as well as graduate students who have interest in this topic.\nSense of belonging is a basic human need that all students are motivated to fulfill in social contexts. Yet\, racist and oppressive institutional structures and practices conspire in the marginalization and alienation that minoritized students consistently report on campus. In this talk\, Royel M. Johnson will identify promising practices that instructors should consider to counteract disconfirming messages that minoritized students receive about their place or “fit” on campus. Drawing on the concepts of equity-mindedness and anti-racism\, he will provide attendees with specific recommendations for (re)designing their courses in ways that attend to students’ belonging needs.\nSpeaker: Royel M. Johnson is assistant professor of higher education at Pennsylvania State University\, where he is also associate director of the Center for the Study of Higher Education. However\, he will join the Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California as associate professor of higher education January 1\, 2022. Johnson is a nationally recognized scholar\, whose interdisciplinary research addresses issues of educational access\, racial equity\, and student success. His work has an unapologetic focus on racially/ethnically minoritized and other institutionally marginalized populations including young people with foster care experience and justice-involved youth.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/pmXNj.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Forbidden Fruit: Traveling through Cuba by Motorcycle
DESCRIPTION:For the first half of the 20th century\, Cuba was known as an exotic get-a-way for wealthy Americans\, mobsters\, and Ernest Hemingway. This ended with the American embargo imposed by President Kennedy in 1962\, eased a bit with President Obama’s “Cuban thaw” in December\, 2015\, only to be re-imposed by the Trump administration in 2019. \n\nDuring the thaw\, our presenter spent a month in Cuba studying Spanish\, volunteering in an after-school program\, and exploring the island on a motorcycle. What did he learn about our “forbidden neighbor”\, and how can Americans again sample the spice of Cuba? Find out during this photo presentation and discussion.\n\nJohn Deikis caught the travel bug working on an ocean-going ship in the 1960’s. He later spent a year wandering to the southern tip of South America\, Prudhoe Bay in Alaska\, the North Cape of arctic Europe\, and the Cape of Good Hope in Africa. Interrupted by an unexpected adulthood\, he returned to traveling when he retired from a career as a clinical psychologist 10 years ago. His preferred mode of travel is now by motorcycle.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | The Plasma-Water Interface: Modern Challenges and New Software Tools
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe interaction of low-temperature plasmas with liquid water is a fundamental problem in many applications\, from plasma medicine to chemical processing\, and more generally where the generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and/or of solvated electrons is of utmost importance. However\, characterization of the plasma-liquid interface presents several challenges\, both experimentally and computationally\, due to the multiscale and multiphysics nature of the problem. In this seminar we provide an overview of recent modeling developments on plasma-liquid interfaces\, presenting the new software package Zapdos-CRANE\, based on the MOOSE finite-element framework. We provide a brief overview of the software\, showing few case studies of interest. The model was used to study a humid argon DC plasma over a water surface\, operated in both cathodic and anodic modes. In this system\, one of the reactions of interest is the formation and dissolution of hydroxide (OH) radicals\, which subsequently produce hydrogen peroxide. The model allows the investigation of the main plasma-chemistry reaction mechanisms for peroxide production with the plasma. The analysis reveals that hydrogen peroxide is increased during anodic plasma treatment due to elevated water vapor dissociation reactions near the interface. Finally\, the role of solvated electrons generated during cathodic plasma operations is discussed\, showing how they directly degrade hydrogen peroxide in the aqueous phase\, inhibiting its accumulation.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDavide Curreli is Associate Professor in the Department of Nuclear\, Plasma\, and Radiological Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\, and at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Dr. Curreli leads the Laboratory for Computational Plasma Physics at Illinois. His research activities focus on computational modeling of plasma material interactions and plasma chemistry of low-temperature plasmas for fusion and nuclear applications. Among his current research activities\, Dr. Curreli is coordinator of the Nuclear Fireball Plasma Chemistry activities within the University Research Alliance funded by DOD DTRA. His group actively works on multiple projects in Fusion Energy Sciences. Dr. Curreli is Donald Biggar Willett Faculty Scholar at the University of Illinois.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted in person and simulcast via Zoom\; it is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DCMB / CCMB Weekly Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Talk title: Clinical Trajectory analysis to determine risk-factors of Copd: A COPDGene Study\n\nAbstract:\n\nBackground\n\nChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) presents significant clinical heterogeneity and a wide variety of progression trajectories [1]. Clinical trajectory analysis (ClinTrajAn) is a powerful tool based on elastic principal graphs for the calculation of trajectories from large cross-sectional clinical data sets [2].\n\nAims and objectives\n\nOur objective was to determine potential risk-factors by evaluate progression trajectories in COPD using ClinTrajAn on the COPDGene Phase I (baseline visit) dataset. \n\nMethods\n\n7883 participants\, current and former smokers with GOLD 0 thru 4 COPD\, from Phase I of the COPDGene study\, were utilized for this work. 55 features were obtained for each subject\, including demographics\, spirometry\, smoking history and computed tomography (CT)\, which included Parametric Response Mapping (PRM). Developed by our group\, PRM is capable of simultaneously measuring small airways disease and emphysema which are the main contributors of airflow limitations in COPD. The resulting data matrix was analyzed with ClinTrajAn.\n\nResults\n\nA principal tree\, with 13 branch segments and 8 termini\, was generated (Figure 1). There was a clearly recognized trajectory from healthier subjects through decreasing lung function and increasing age (Figure 1 A)\, increasing in GOLD (Figure 1 B)\, to an emphysema high terminus (Figure 1 C). Notably this method illustrated numerous branching points along this trajectory.\n\nConclusions\n\nIn this study we used ClinTrajAn to obtain a map of disease progression trajectories in COPD including clinically recognized pathogenesis. Our next steps will be to further validate this approach using longitudinal data from the COPDGene follow-up visits.\n\nReferences\n\n1. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Nonlinear Terahertz Spectroscopy and Terahertz Control of Material Structure and Dynamics
DESCRIPTION:https://umich.zoom.us/j/94692610056\n\nThe development of methods for generation of strong terahertz-frequency electromagnetic fields has enabled the advance of nonlinear THz spectroscopy and 2-dimensional THz spectroscopy of collective and molecular degrees of freedom. These methods have revealed multiple-quantum coherences and correlations among modes ranging from gas-phase molecular rotations to lattice vibrations (optical phonons) in quantum paraelectric crystals to spin waves (magnons) in canted antiferromagnetic systems. Recent results will be reviewed and will segue from nonlinear THz spectroscopy to nonlinear THz control over material structure and behavior. Structural and electronic phase transitions have been induced by THz fields\, yielding transient or long-lived phases whose formation dynamics have been monitored using THz\, optical\, and x-ray probes. Finally\, the prospects for excitation of multiple modes including acoustic and optical phonons\, magnons\, and low-frequency electronic responses in order to reveal their interactions and to guide materials through complex multiphase landscapes will be discussed.\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Well-being:From Healthcare to Self-Care: Empowering Ourselves Through Well-Being\, Meaning and Sustainable Behavior Change
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered why it is that people who desperately want to adopt physically active lifestyles don’t stick with them once their initial burst of motivation fades? This provocative presentation will showcase the science for a new paradigm to better foster sustainable behavior change. Dr. Michelle Segar will explain why logic-based reasons for behavior change (e.g.\, better health\, disease prevention\, etc.) keep people stuck in cycles of starting and stopping but not behavioral sustainability. Using a science-based story\, she will describe a novel approach to promoting physical activity and other self-care behaviors that can be used across contexts (organizational\, health care\, fitness\, coaching\, etc.). Attendees will leave this session with a more strategic way to think about and promote the sustainable behavior necessary for achieving improved health and well-being.\n\nPlease register to receive zoom link: https://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/track/event/session/45695

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:The Need for Black Men and Vulnerability in Education
DESCRIPTION:According to the U.S department of Education\, Black males make up only 2 percent of the teaching workforce nationwide. This issue of Black men not being teachers in the classroom affects every student\, but itaffects Black boys disproportionately.\n\nA 2017 study by the Institute of Labor Economics found that low-income Black students who have a Black teacher—man or woman—for at least one year in elementary school are lesslikely to drop out of high school and more likely to consider college. Still\, only seven percent of teachers nationwide are Black. What are the long and short term effects for the mental health and growth of our black students if they never see themselves in their educators?\n\nAt our first event in our Leaders of Color series\, we will be diving into the need and importance of Black men in education. We will start with a Q&A featuring three incredible Black male teachers: Will Smart\, Bernard Alexander\, and Stephen Ucheomumu. This conversation will be facilitated by Britney Brunache\, who is currently leading as the President of the Black Student Union at Gettysburg College.\n\nOur questions will explore how our panelists' identities have intersected in the classroom\, the importance of representation\, and how they've been able to center mental health and self-care in their work for their students and themselves. \n\nYou will then be able to go into self-selected breakout groups where you can learn more about race in education\, mental health and vulnerability in the classroom\, and grad school/post-graduation opportunities for those who plan to teach.\n\nWe look forward to hopefully seeing you there!\n\n*This event is open to students of all racial and ethnic identities\, but we will be specifically elevating the voices of Black men in our panel.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Padnos Public Engagement on Jewish Learning Event: “When Patronage was ‘Matronage’: How Jewish Women’s Money Supported the Early Jesus Movement”
DESCRIPTION:The Stuart and Barbara Padnos Foundation has provided a gift to the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies to establish the Padnos Engagement on Jewish Learning fund. The initiative\, which commenced last year\, will facilitate annual public educational activities in Jewish Studies throughout the State of Michigan with a focus on the western part of the state.\n\nThe Padnos Public Engagement on Jewish Learning Event\, to take place on November 17 at 7 pm\, will feature Dr. Shayna Sheinfeld\, Frankel Institute Fellow\, University of Michigan\, and Honorary Research Fellow\, Sheffield Institute for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies (SIIBS). Dr. Sheinfeld will present a lecture called “When Patronage was ‘Matronage’: How Jewish Women’s Money Supported the Early Jesus Movement” at the Loosemore Auditorium at the Richard M. Devos Center on Grand Valley State University's Campus. The event will also be virtually simulcast. Immediately following the lecture at approximately 8:30 there will be a light reception in the adjacent Lubbers Exhibition Hall.\n\nDr. Sheinfeld prefaces her discussion: \"From the beginning of his ministry\, women were followers of Jesus. While his followers came from every strata of life\, women were essential for the financial and social support that this early Jewish movement saw. The Gospel of Mark mentions Mary Magdalene and Salome who provided for Jesus\; Luke talks about Martha who hosts Jesus and his disciples in her home\; in Acts\, Lydia welcomes the apostle Paul and his cohort to her home where they stay while in Thyatira. These women were not unusual\, however\, in their active financial and social support of causes they were committed to. This talk will explore and contextualize these women among other Jewish women as possessors of capital and as active actors in the social\, political\, and religious world in which they lived.\"\n\nRegister for the livestream here: https://myumi.ch/WQVjd
