SUMMARY:Exhibition:When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles-based artist Shizu Saldamando was born in 1978 to parents of Mexican-American and Japanese-American descent and raised in San Francisco’s Mission District. Saldamando merges painting and collage\, often using origami paper\, glitter\, or gold leaf in her compositions\, many of which are painted on wood or found surfaces. Her modern portraits and innovative methods challenge social constructs pertaining to individual and collective identity within the broader context of the “American Portrait.” Saldamando’s visual biographies\, which use her friends\, family\, and fellow members of the Chicanx creative community in Los Angeles\, create new ways of seeing and being seen.\n\nOn November 2\, 6:30-8pm\, Shizu Saldamando talks to curator Amanda Krugliak about Shizu's artistic practice and her exhibition *When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine*.\n\nAbout the artist: Shizu Saldamando is an LA based mixed media artist with an emphasis on portraiture. She received her B.A. from UCLA’s School of Arts and Architecture and her M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally and experiments with a broad range of surfaces and materials. Saldamando’s practice employs tattooing\, video\, painting and drawing on canvas\, wood\, paper\, and cloth. The work functions as homage\, as well as documentation\, of friends and peers within artistic and musical subcultures around the Los Angeles metropolitan area. She is currently represented by Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles.\n\nShizu Saldamando is the 2021 Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:This exhibt runs through December 12\, 2021.\n\nMaking art can be a transformative experience. It helps us to confront and address some of the most pressing issues of our time. Art has the power to shift the way we see and understand the world around us\, and the worlds within us. Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan invites us to consider these qualities of art\, while also grappling with the carceral system and the many ways it affects the lives of all of us.\n\nCurrently there are approximately 2.2 million people incarcerated in the United States\, and in Michigan\, there are roughly 33\,000 residents currently serving time in the prison system. Working together with a coalition of more than a dozen organizations and Michigan State University units and departments\, Free Your Mind explores the inner worlds of incarcerated individuals and the fundamental issues that shape conversations around incarceration today. The exhibition centers on four key topics of inquiry: Michigan’s length of sentencing and overcrowding in prisons\; the impact of incarceration on women\; youth incarceration\; and the dangers of COVID-19.\n\nThe exhibition features artists\, poets\, and storytellers of great achievement. The majority of these artists are either currently or formerly incarcerated. Their works on view invite us to consider the role art-making plays in prisons as a liberating force\, and offer unique perspectives on the experience of incarceration. The works also invite us to approach the subject of incarceration with an open mind. Free Your Mind aims to cultivate a greater sense of empathy for those directly impacted by incarceration and an understanding that their growth as individuals is linked to the greater health of the society we all live in\, together.\n\nFree Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan is organized by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University and curated by Steven L. Bridges\, Senior Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs\, and Janie Paul\, Senior Curator and Cofounder\, Annual Exhibitions of Art by Michigan Prisoners\, a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan. Support for this exhibition is provided by the Eli and Edythe Broad endowed exhibitions fund.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CJS Lecture Series | The Massacre and the Conspiracy: Locating the Japanese Diaspora in Seventeenth Century Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:In 1621\, Japanese soldiers participated in a massive Dutch East India Company invasion of the Banda islands in Southeast Asia. Pressed into service as executioners\, they were involved in the opening act of a violent campaign to pacify a key territory in the Dutch empire. Just two years later\, Japanese soldiers found themselves facing the executioner’s blade as they were accused of plotting against the Company on the nearby island of Ambon. These two episodes in 1621 and 1623 encapsulate the Dutch East India Company’s shifting relationship with the Japanese recruits that it transported to Southeast Asia to wage war on its behalf. This talk will explore the Company’s short-lived experiment with recruiting Japanese military labor and how this can be located within the wider history of the Japanese diaspora in seventeenth century Southeast Asia. In the last part of the talk\, I will turn to examine the surprising resilience of Japanese communities both in the Dutch overseas empire and more generally across the region.\n \n Adam Clulow is a Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the author of The Company and the Shogun: The Dutch Encounter with Tokugawa Japan (Columbia University Press\, 2014)\, which won multiple awards including the Jerry Bentley Prize in World History from the American Historical Association\, and Amboina\, 1623: Conspiracy and Fear on the Edge of Empire (Columbia University Press\, 2019). He is creator of The Amboyna Conspiracy Trial\, an online interactive trial engine that received the New South Wales Premiers History Award in 2017\, and Virtual Angkor with Tom Chandler\, which received the American Historical Association’s Roy Rosenzweig Prize for Innovation in Digital History and the 2021 Digital Humanities and Multimedia Studies Prize from the Medieval Academy of America.\n\nPlease register for this zoom event here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_B9t1CWWgRaqLTYF_ssg3ag\n\nThis colloquium series is made possible by the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition
DESCRIPTION:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition features the work of artists in the Linkage Project\, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) that affirms the creativity of adults who have returned from incarceration. The artists previously exhibited their work at PCAP's Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners at the University of Michigan. For some\, this exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Lab is the first opportunity to show their work since regaining their freedom. Art-making has helped these artists during the dark years of their incarceration\, and we hope the exhibition inspires visitors to learn more about how to support formerly incarcerated people reconnecting with their communities.\n\nMartín Vargas\, artist and curator of this exhibition\, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work\, but also during select Art Lab studio hours\, which will feature several of the artists working in person.\n\nConnections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition is organized by the Linkage Project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. The exhibition is curated by Martín Vargas\, Vanessa Mayesky\, Scott Tompkins\, Nico Slowik\, Kimiko Uyeda\, and Jenna VanFleteren.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: Effective Geometries in Elasticity: Wrinkles and Planar Kirigami
DESCRIPTION:Ian Tobasco \nAssistant Professor \nDepartment of Mathematics\, Statistics\, and Computer Science\nUniversity of Illinois at Chicago \n\nWhat do wrinkles and shape-morphing architectural sheets have in common? The answer is fine scale buckling — a patterned response driven by mechanical instabilities enabling macroscopic shape change beyond bulk elasticity. This talk will highlight two recent developments in the mathematics of materials leading to new predictions for (i) the zoo of wrinkle patterns that form when a shell is incompatibly confined\, and (ii) the emergent deformations of kirigami sheets made by removing a lattice of holes. Behind both advances is the concept of an “effective geometrical description” in which the underlying patterns are “averaged out”. Systematic energy minimization leads to a limiting description in which the effective geometry can be found\, sometimes even by hand. Our story reminds of the classical homogenization of composites\, but with fine scale buckling patterns in place of a rapidly oscillating material law. Finding effective geometries is the first step towards an effective mechanical theory of shape change.\n\nAbout the speaker...\nIan Tobasco is an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Mathematics\, Statistics\, and Computer Science. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University\, and a B.S.E. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan. Tobasco works at the interface of mathematics\, physics\, and engineering\, where advances in analysis can lead to scientific breakthroughs in the lab and vice versa. Besides elasticity\, Tobasco’s current interests include the search for optimal transport mechanisms in fluid dynamics\, and their comparison with naturally turbulent flows.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SEMINAR: \"Optimization Models to Increase Supplier Autonomy and Resource Utilization\" – Jennifer Ann Pazour
DESCRIPTION:The Departmental Seminar Series is open to all. U-M Industrial and Operations Engineering graduate students and faculty are especially encouraged to attend.\n\nTitle: Optimization Models to Increase Supplier Autonomy and Resource Utilization\n\nAbstract:\nUnderutilized resources exist all around us. When at a stoplight\, notice the empty seats and cargo spaces in the vehicles around you. Think about the monolithic distribution centers that are a mismatch for most businesses’ seasonal and fluctuating space and throughput requirements. To harness these and other underutilized resources\, organizations need to think differently about how resources are acquired\, managed\, and allocated to fulfill requests. This talk will focus on one such solution: on-demand systems that match requests to independent\, decentralized suppliers who are not employed nor controlled by the platform. In these situations\, the platform cannot be certain a supplier will accept an offered request. To mitigate this selection uncertainty\, a platform can offer each supplier a menu of requests to choose from. However\, such menus need to be created carefully because of the trade-off between increasing selection probability and reduced systematic control. In addition to a complex decision space\, supplier selection decisions are vast and have systematic implications\, impacting the platform’s revenue\, other suppliers’ experiences (in the form of duplicate selections) and the request waiting times. Thus\, we present a multiple scenario approach\, repeatedly sampling potential supplier selections\, solving the corresponding two-stage decision problems\, and combining the multiple different solutions through a consensus algorithm. Our specialized dynamic methods to create and push personalized recommendations to a set of freelance suppliers have broad applications to crowdsourced delivery\, ride sharing\, and volunteer management where providing choices can help interleaving of tasks with other activities and has the potential to increase resource utilization of decentralized assets. Extensive computational results using the Chicago Region as a case study illustrate that our method outperforms a set of benchmark policies\, and is tractable for real-time deployment. We quantify the value of anticipating supplier selection\, offering menus to suppliers\, offering requests to multiple suppliers at once\, and holistically generating menus with the entire system in mind. Our method leads to more balanced assignments by sacrificing some easy wins towards better system performance over time and for all stakeholders involved\, including increased revenue for the platform\, and decreased match waiting times for suppliers and requests.\n \nThis research is partially funded by the National Science Foundation award 1751801 and through a Johnson and Johnson WiSTEM2D fellowship. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CLASP Seminar Series: Dr. Abigail Azari of the University of California\, Berkeley
DESCRIPTION:University of California\, Berkeley Post Doctoral Researcher and Climate & Space alum Dr. Abigail Azari will give a lecture as part of the CLASP Seminar Series. Please join us!\n\nDr. Azari’s presentation is titled \"Title: Interpretable Data Science Models for Planetary Space Environments: A Bayesian View of Mars’ Magnetic Environment with MAVEN\" and will take place on Thursday\, November 18 at 3:30 p.m. EDT.\n\nThis seminar will be in person at the Climate and Space Research Building Auditorium\, Room 2246.\n\nThe seminar may also be viewed via Zoom.\nPlease contact lhopkins@umich to request zoom access.\n\nABSTRACT:\nRecent planetary science missions are returning increasingly large datasets. The data volumes generated by modern missions have necessitated the use of data science methods\, including machine learning to engage in data analysis. It is advantageous to use these data-intensive methods to study planetary systems as they provide new system-wide perspectives. However there are several challenges that create difficulties when engaging in the scientific process with currently available data and methods. First\, planetary science data\, much like other data from natural systems\, is inherently spatio-temporal\, of multiple resolutions\, and contains uncertainty. This creates a barrier for data processing when using traditional machine learning methods. Second\, many planetary science questions require the use of interpretable models to pursue inference. In other words\, answering these questions requires models that follow some underlying physical rules or constraints\, or otherwise simple functional form that allows for human understanding of the model’s form and outputs. \n\nThis presentation will provide an overview of these challenges and potential solutions\, before discussing a recent application of Bayesian methods to quantify the spatio-temporal nature of Mars' magnetic field environment. The magnetic environment of Mars is understood to impact atmospheric loss processes\, both at present data and over geologic timescales\, but we are still understanding exactly how these magnetic fields affect such processes. Quantifying the magnetic field morphology is complex\, as Mars’ magnetic field environment is driven by various factors. These factors include the non-uniform distribution of localized crustal fields\, solar wind dynamics\, and ionospheric currents. These result in spatially localized and global effects\, driven by dynamic upstream conditions. Previous work has demonstrated crustal field influence on nightside dynamics [e.g. DiBraccio et al.\, 2018]. This presentation aims to develop a global perspective\, where we are particularly interested in characterizing the magnetic field morphology on the dayside of the planet near the exobase where ions are cold\, initially accelerated\, and still controlled by the magnetic field. To do this\, we take advantage of the extensive MAVEN magnetic field dataset which began orbiting Mars in 2014 and has now collected data from ~15\,000 orbits that describe this magnetic environment over nearly the entire planet. We pursued Bayesian inference methods to estimate the effects of solar wind magnetic field direction on the resultant observations\, before concluding on the implications for Mars' space environment.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:BME 500 Seminar: \"Engineering next-generation T cells for cancer immunotherapy\"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThe adoptive transfer of T cells expressing chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) has demonstrated clinical efficacy in the treatment of advanced cancers\, with anti-CD19 CAR-T cells achieving up to 90% complete remission among patients with relapsed B-cell malignancies. However\, challenges such as antigen escape and immunosuppression limit the long-term efficacy of adoptive T-cell therapy. Here\, I will discuss the development of and clinical data on next-generation T cells that can target multiple cancer antigens and resist antigen escape. I will also present recent work on tuning CAR signaling activities via rational protein design to achieve greater in vivo anti-tumor efficacy. This presentation will highlight the potential of synthetic biology in generating novel mammalian cell systems with multifunctional outputs for therapeutic applications.\nDetails:\nDATE: Thursday\, November 18\, 2021\nTIME: 4:00-5:00 pm\nZOOM LINK: https://umich.zoom.us/j/97723483179

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Brendan Goff Book Event: Rotary International and the Selling of American Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:Debates over the rise and fall of US empire continue to pervade headlines as well as academia. More recently\, many scholars have come to recognize the history of capitalism as its own field of inquiry. In his book\, Rotary International and the Selling of American Capitalism (HUP\, 2021)\, Brendan Goff seeks to bring these two timely and evolving fields together through a close examination of the origins\, growth\, and expansion of Rotary clubs throughout the world during the first half of the twentieth century. When placed within the pre-war context of local and regional forms of boosterism\, transnational business and social networks\, civic and managerial discourses\, and racialized and gendered forms of economic citizenship\, local Rotary clubs proved to be anything but local\, serving instead as nodal points for internationalist ambitions from towns and cities to nations and empires\, from small businessmen to multi-national corporations.\n\nThat thousands of independent clubs operated worldwide through Rotary International\, their administrative core based in Chicago\, rather than through any formal arrangement with the US government\, the US military\, or its foreign policy elites proved invaluable in maintaining a strategic distance from the state. At the same time\, what Goff calls Rotary’s civic internationalism promoted an idealized form of small-town\, Main Street values that helped re-brand corporate capitalism as the central driver of progressive change in the world by mid- century. In this manner\, Rotary International—a non-governmental organization—helped stabilize and advance both US national interests as well as US-based corporations and industries in a period of rapid global ascendancy.\n\nBrendan Goff received his PhD in history at the University of Michigan in 2008. Before moving to New College of Florida in 2011 as a Visiting Assistant Professor\, Dr. Goff held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies at the University of Michigan and was a lecturer in the Great Books Program at the University of Michigan. From 2014 to 2021\, Dr. Goff also served as Assistant Professor at New College of Florida. Before entering the PhD program at Michigan\, Dr. Goff worked as a freelance English teacher in Madrid\, at a major bank in New York City\, and in the Government and Community Affairs Division at the Children’s Defense Fund in Washington\, DC. He also studied philosophy at the University of Glasgow as an Ambassadorial Scholar with Rotary International and attended seminary shortly after graduating from Hamilton College. Dr. Goff’s book\, Rotary International and the Selling of American Capitalism\, was published by Harvard University Press in July of 2021.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC/CM Seminar | Pulsed-Field Techniques Applied to UTe_2: High-Field Magnetism and the \"Lazarus*\" Superconducting State
DESCRIPTION:High magnetic fields usually destroy superconductivity. However\, this talk will describe a variety of measurements carried out in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 73 T\, including transport\, magnetometry\, the magnetocaloric effect and MHz penetration depth\, that show that UTe2 exhibits multiple high-field bulk superconducting phases. These include the highest magnetic field range of any re-entrant superconducting phase\, with zero resistance persisting beyond 70 T. Despite the huge range of magnetic field involved\, all of the superconducting phases vanish at a similar temperature. \n\nSuperconductivity in such high magnetic fields presents a considerable challenge for current theoretical approaches. Whilst models such as the Jaccarino-Peter compensation effect can be eliminated as an explanation\, the magnetic-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity mechanism thought to occur in heavy-fermion compounds such as URhGe could provide a qualitative understanding of UTe_2. Finally\, I discuss the \"homogenizing\" role of high magnetic fields in both UTe_2 and systems such as CeOs_4Sb_{12}. In these materials\, the zero-field properties are highly sensitive to details of the synthesis method and crystal quality\, whereas the phase diagrams are unified in fields above 30 T.\n\n*In UTe_2 the superconductivity initially appears to be \"killed\" by the magnetic field. But then\, like Lazarus\, it \"rises from the dead\" at a higher field. Thanks are due to the NHMFL publicity department for this (possibly useful) analogy which has now entered popular physics culture.\n\n

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Luciferous: On Bioluminescence + (Sub)surface Darkness
DESCRIPTION:Fireflies are among the most conspicuous bioluminescent organisms existing topside. Creatures that emit their own chemically generated light from within also populate oceanic and subterranean depths\, which are obscured planetary realms long associated with chthonic underworlds. Bioluminescence causes squids\, fish\, fungi\, insects\, bacteria\, and worms to glow in dim conditions beyond the Sun’s rays. Their colorful flashes and glimmers function as camouflage\, thus allowing them to evade predators and lure prey. Sensitive infrared night vision cameras seem best equipped to image the phenomenon. Two of the main substances fueling bioluminescence\, Luciferin and Luciferase\, share etymological roots with Lucifer\, the radiant fallen angel and ruler of hell below chronicled in Abrahamic traditions. Coincidentally\, certain clinical and industrial applications of bioluminescent technology have attracted public suspicion because they are thought to be readily weaponizable for malevolent purposes. Given this context\, my talk considers how demonological perspectives inflect understandings of bioluminescence as a visual and scientific phenomenon.\n \nCecilio M. Cooper is a Forsyth Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of the History of Art at the University of Michigan. By engaging the visual cultures of alchemy\, demonology\, and cartography\, their first book manuscript South of Heaven: Surface\, Territory + the Black Chthonic examines the occulted role blackness plays in cosmological constitutions of territory throughout Europe and the Americas. They earned their PhD from Northwestern University in 2019.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Preventable: COVID-19\, healthcare\, and the future
DESCRIPTION:While the uneven government response to the COVID-19 pandemic may have been responsible for thousands of unnecessary deaths\, the pandemic revealed larger issues of health inequity across U.S. society. Andy Slavitt\, former Biden White House COVID-19 senior advisor and acting CMS administrator\, has outlined the mistakes made\, the larger picture of healthcare in America\, and prescriptions for alleviating some of those problems. He will be in discussion with Towsley Policymaker in Residence and health advocate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed.\n\nAbout the book:\nFrom former Biden Senior Advisor Andy Slavitt\, Preventable is the definitive inside account of the United States' failed response to the Coronavirus pandemic. Slavitt chronicles what he saw and how much could have been prevented—an unflinching investigation of the cultural\, political\, and economic drivers that led to unnecessary loss of life.\n\nWith unparalleled access to the key players throughout the government on both sides of the aisle\, the principal public figures\, as well as the people working on the frontline involved in fighting the virus\, Slavitt brings you into the room as fateful decisions are made and focuses on the people at the center of the political system\, health care system\, patients\, and caregivers. The story that emerges is one of a country in which—despite the heroics of many—bad leadership\, political and cultural fractures\, and an unwillingness to sustain sacrifice light a fuse that is difficult to extinguish.\n\nWritten in the tradition of The Big Short\, Preventable continues Andy Slavitt’s important work of addressing the uncomfortable realities that brought America to this place. And\, he puts forth the solutions that will prevent us from being here again\, ensuring a better\, stronger country for everyone.\n\nMore information: https://fordschool.umich.edu/event/2021/preventable-covid-19-healthcare-and-future

SUMMARY:Other:What 2DIR Can Tell Us About Complex and Heterogeneous Biophysical Systems
DESCRIPTION:While two-dimensional infrared (2DIR) spectroscopy has been useful for studying properties of peptides and proteins\, many of those results were made on “clean”\, homogenous samples. My lab’s long-term goal is to turn the sensitive and ultrafast observables of 2DIR into useful image contrast agents for complex biophysical systems\, where they can answer questions related to solvation dynamics and molecular structure that few other methods can address. To that end\, I will present three projects from my lab that move us closer to this goal. 1: Proline-arginine (PR) dipeptide repeats are an example of a growing number of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) that can assemble into membraneless organelles by Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS)\, and has also been implicated in the disease mechanism of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We show that formation of droplets by PR20 accompanies changes in the Amide-I spectra consistent with folding into poly-proline helical structures\, providing\, to our knowledge\, the first piece of evidence that LLPS can drive folding of IDPs. 2: For cross-α fibrils\, recently discovered structures derived from the biofilms of virulent strains of Staphylococcus Aureus bacteria\, the absorptive spectra are virtually indistinguishable from monomeric α-helices. As such\, we performed a detailed study of the nonlinear infrared response of this system under a variety of experimental conditions and detail how polarization sensitive 2DIR\, in combination with both broad-band time domain and narrow-band frequency domain spectroscopy\, together revealed. a coherent nonlinear signature unique to α-fibrils. In addition\, spatial scanning of the sample revealed underlying polymorphism in the fibrils\, demonstrating that this peptide is capable of adopting both cross-α and cross-β fibril structure in the same environment. 3: Wide-field imaging through dielectric microspheres has emerged in recent years as a simple and effective approach for generating super-resolution images at visible wavelengths. We demonstrate that polystyrene dielectric microspheres can be used in a wide-field infrared (IR) microscope to enhance far field resolution as well. We observe a clear improvement in resolution and magnification when images are collected through polystyrene microspheres and anticipate that super-resolution could be achieved with the addition of high-quality IR objectives. \n \n \n \nArnaldo Serrano (University of Notre Dame)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CAS Edward Hagop Noroian Annual Lecture | Imagined Landscapes and Crafted Worlds: Spacetime and Natureculture in Medieval Armenia
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid event: Room 1010\, Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109\n \n Or participate virtually by registering in advance for the webinar here: https://myumi.ch/O4v3Q\n \n After registration\, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to join the webinar.\n \n Many ongoing discussions of how we might (how we must) live on a damaged planet with an uncertain future hinge on imagination. In particular\, social scientists across disciplines are concerned with the problem of imagining lifeworlds of more than human kin\, at timescales beyond our individual lifetimes. These challenges\, of dreaming an ever-widening world and also caring about and for it\, seem hypermodern\; and yet\, they were urgent and immediate to people living and working in Armenian cities\, towns\, and mountain valleys centuries ago\, in the high middle ages (13th-15th centuries AD). Interdisciplinary archaeological research into the big and small politics of Armenians during this period reveals a profound concern for personal relationships with eternity\, even (and especially) beyond the period of the Mongol conquest\, described by Kirakos Ganjakec’i as ‘the end of time.’ This talk considers medieval Armenian world-making at multiple scales\, from the intimacy of embodied selves to the expansive cultural world we now call the Silk Road. In particular\, it will reflect on the ways that the commemoration of the self and the memory of landscape were tangled together\, and how these might help us think otherwise about seemingly-separate worlds of nature and culture\, past and future.\n \nKate Franklin is an anthropological archaeologist and Lecturer in Medieval History at Birkbeck University of London. Her work is focused most closely on Armenia in the Mongol period\, and specifically engaged with techniques of world-making and Silk Road cosmopolitanism. Franklin’s dissertation (University of Chicago\, 2014) centered on excavations at the Arai-Bazarjul caravanserai in the Kasakh Valley. Prior to her position at Birkbeck she taught anthropology\, archaeology\, war\, and history at the University of Chicago as Dumanian Visiting Professor in Armenian Studies\, and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Franklin has published on caravan infrastructure\, medieval embodied politics\, landscape\, memory\, and everyday life. Her book \"Everyday Cosmopolitanisms: Living the Silk Road in Medieval Armenia\,\" (University of California Press\, 2021) is out and available in print and Open Access.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at caswebinars@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director’s Financial Analyst program
DESCRIPTION:This is the 2nd of 3 information sessions about our DFA program and the application process. This unique\, two-year rotational fellowship sits at the intersection of the federal government and the financial services industry. Director’s Financial Analysts are given the opportunity to hone analytical and problem-solving skills while helping to make markets for consumer financial products work for Americans. As a result\, in a short period of time\, analysts will play an integral role in everything the Bureau does\, from rigorous data-driven policy creation and market monitoring to on-site supervision of market participants. Director’s Financial Analysts have used the program to develop their professional skills and grow their public service networks within a collaborative cohort environment. Alumni of the DFA program have moved on to competitive graduate programs (e.g. Stanford Law\, Princeton MPP\, Dartmouth MBA)\, public sector opportunities (e.g. DC city government\, Federal Reserve Banks)\, private industry\, and other divisions within the CFPB. All analysts will complete developmental rotations in offices throughout the CFPB. These rotations are designed to provide exposure to the analysis\, strategy\, research\, education\, policy development\, supervision\, enforcement\, and rulemaking activities throughout the Bureau. We are recruiting for positions that begin after the 2021-2022 academic year.\n\nFOR MORE INFORMATION Please encourage interested students to send an email to CFPB_DFA_Program@cfpb.gov.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Public Talk: Sir David Adjaye + Chika Okeke-Agulu: Homeward
DESCRIPTION:.\n \nThis program will be webcast on the main Penny Stamps Series page and at dptv.org/pennystamps. You can also watch the talks and join the conversation on the Penny Stamps Series Facebook page.\n \nThe debate about restitution and the ethics of Western museums’ owning African artworks collected during the era of colonization has never been more in the public eye. Most well-known\, perhaps\, are the “Benin bronzes\,” artistic and royal heirlooms made since the 13th century by highly specialized metalworkers in the Kingdom of Benin (now southern Nigeria). In 1897\, British forces sacked the capital of this prosperous kingdom. They tore sculptures and plaques from the palace walls\, and took them back to Europe\, where the looted treasures were sold to museums and private collectors. The royal court of Benin\, Nigerian officials\, and high-profile scholars such as Professor Chika Okeke-Agulu (Princeton) have been demanding their return for decades. Over the last decade\, some museums based in the Global North have been listening to these calls for repatriation\, and some have pledged to return works from their collections. To provide a new home for the repatriated works\, plans for a new Edo Museum of West African Art (EMOWAA)\, are currently in development with world renowned architect Sir David Adjaye leading the building design project. \n \nOn the occasion of Wish You Were Here: African Art & Restitution\, a public investigation into our own collection at the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)\, Sir David Adjaye and Professor Chika Okeke-Agulu will discuss their current and recent projects that address   how works of art may re-enter the societies they were torn away from. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Sir David Adjaye + Chika Okeke-Agulu
DESCRIPTION:The debate about restitution and the ethics of Western museums’ owning African artworks collected during the era of colonization has never been more in the public eye. Increasingly\, museums based in the Global North have been listening to these calls for repatriation\, and some have pledged to return works from their collections. To provide a new home for the repatriated works\, plans for a new Edo Museum of West African Art (EMOWAA)\, are currently in development with world renowned architect Sir David Adjaye leading the building design project.\nOn the occasion of Wish You Were Here: African Art &amp\; Restitution\, a public investigation into our own collection at the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)\, Sir David Adjaye and Professor Chika Okeke-Agulu will discuss their current and recent projects that address how works of art may re-enter the societies they were torn away from. Laura De Becker\, Interim Chief Curator and the Helmut and Candis Stern Curator of African Art at UMMA\, will introduce the event.\nSir David Adjaye OBE is an award winning Ghanaian-British architect known to infuse his artistic sensibilities and ethos for community-driven projects.
