The exhibition centers on four key topics of inquiry: Michigan\u2019s length of sentencing and overcrowding in prisons; the impact of incarceration on women; youth incarceration; and the dangers of COVID-19.\r\n\r\nThe exhibition features artists, poets, and storytellers of great achievement. The majority of these artists are either currently or formerly incarcerated. Their works on view invite us to consider the role art-making plays in prisons as a liberating force, and offer unique perspectives on the experience of incarceration. The works also invite us to approach the subject of incarceration with an open mind. During this period, CREES has sponsored lectures on events in Hungary, including Hungary\u2019s outsized influence on populist and far-right movements elsewhere in Europe and more recently in the United States. Today\u2019s roundtable continues this conversation with the work of two Hungarian anthropologists, Violetta Zentai and Margit Feischmidt. Each will briefly discuss aspects of their current work investigating contemporary Hungary under the Orban regime and then open the discussion to questions from the audience. The roundtable will be moderated by professor of anthropology and CREES faculty associate Krisztina Fehervary.\r\n\r\nProfessor Zentai will provide an overview from her work on the \u201canti-gender\u201d political discourses propagated by the current authoritarian-populist regime, and its linkages to de-democratization in the region. Anti-gender discourses not only embrace sexist, homophobic, and anti-gender-equality reasoning, but help enact a nativist and biopolitical right-wing social imagination. She will address the transnational sources of this discourse as well as how it is used by home-grown actors to normalize and make respectable forms of discrimination that were once considered populist, backwards, and exclusionary.\r\n\r\nProfessor Feischmidt\u2019s presentation will draw on a larger project undertaken to understand the cultural logic and social support of new forms of nationalism in Hungary. Here, she will discuss political elites who have fostered the contemporary \u201cTrianon Cult,\u201d a new phenomenon of collective mourning for losses suffered a century ago in the Treaty of Trianon (1920). This \u201cview from above\u201d will be complemented with a \u201cview from below,\u201d by examining the meanings that audiences give to these newly-constructed collective memories. The argument of the paper is that while the Trianon-cult invokes a historical trauma, it in fact speaks to current feelings of loss and resentment.\r\n \r\n\r\nMargit Feischmidt is a research professor at the Research Centre for Social Sciences, Hungarian Academy of Sciences Centre of Excellence, where she leads the Department for Sociology and Anthropology in Minority Studies. She is also the editor-in-chief of *Intersections. East European Journal of Society and Politics *and professor of communication and media studies, University of P\u00e9cs. With a doctoral degree from Humboldt University, she works on issues of migration, nationalism, ethnicity and minorities in East-Central Europe. Her first important publication was *Nationalist Politics and Everyday Ethnicity in a Transylvanian Town* (2006, Princeton University Press) co-authored by Brubaker, Fox and Grancea. After years working mainly on Roma and immigrant minorities in the region, she currently investigates new forms of nationalism, racism and the far-right. Her most recent edited book (with Pries and Cantat) is on civic forms of solidarity (*Refugee Protection and Civil Society in Europe*, Palgrave Macmillan, 2019).\r\n \r\nVioletta Zentai is a social anthropologist, associate professor in the Department of Public Policy, recurring visiting faculty in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, and research fellow at the Democracy Institute of Central European University, Budapest-Vienna. Design-based inference, in which the distribution for inference is generated by the random mechanism used by the sampler, cannot be used for non-probability samples. If probability and non-probability samples are available that target the same population, the probability sample can be used to account for possible selection bias if there are sufficient overlapping covariates even if the outcome is not available in the probability sample. Our work with 2D atomic lattices and 2D molecular frameworks has revealed that even subtle manipulations of the dimensionality and morphology of these materials yield substantial property changes. Notably, we can dramatically manipulate the structure of 2D transition-metal dichalcogenides by\r\ngrowing them on chemically tailored surfaces. The resulting nanoribbons emit light whose energy and profile show an unusual progression with crystal size. Seeking to expand the 2D materials landscape, we have also prepared and examined new 2D molecular frameworks. However, reaching and exploring the underwater environments of these alien worlds is a task with immense challenges. Unlike terrestrial based missions, the exploration of ocean worlds necessitates robots which are capable of fully automated operation. These robots must rely on local sensors to interpret the scene, plan their motions, and complete their mission tasks. Manipulation tasks, such as sample collection, are particularly challenging in underwater environments, where the manipulation platform is mobile, and the environment is unstructured. \r\n\r\nThis dissertation addresses some of the challenges in visual scene understanding to support autonomous manipulation with underwater vehicle manipulator systems (UVMSs). The developed visual methods are demonstrated with a lightweight vision system, composed of a vehicle mounted stereo pair and a manipulator wrist mounted fisheye camera, that can be easily integrated on existing UVMSs. While the stereo camera primarily supports 3D reconstruction of the manipulator working area, the wrist mounted camera enables dynamic viewpoint acquisition for detecting objects, such as tools, and extending the scene reconstruction beyond the fixed stereo view. An objective of this dissertation was also to apply deep learning based visual methods to the underwater domain. While deep learning has greatly advanced the state-of-the-art in terrestrial based visual methods across diverse applications, the challenges of accessing the underwater environment and collecting underwater datasets for training these methods has hindered progress in advancing visual methods for underwater applications. \r\n\r\nFollowing is an overview of the contributions made by this dissertation. The first contribution is a novel deep learning method for object detection and pose estimation from monocular images. The second contribution is a general framework for adapting monocular image-based pose estimation networks to work on full fisheye or omni-directional images with minimal modification to the network architecture. The third contribution is a visual SLAM method designed for UVMSs that fuses features from both the wrist mounted fisheye camera and the vehicle mounted stereo pair into the same map, where the map scale is constrained by the stereo features, and the wrist camera can actively extend the map beyond the limited stereo view. The fourth contribution is an open-source tool to aid the design of underwater camera and lighting systems. The fifth contribution is an autonomy framework for UVMS manipulator control and the vision system that was used throughout this dissertation work, along with experimental results from field trials in natural deep ocean environments, including an active submarine volcano in the Mediterranean basin. Recent advances in joint profiling of transcription and chromatin accessibility with single-cell resolution offer unprecedented opportunities to interrogate such regulatory logic. Here, we propose a nonparametric approach, TRIPOD, to detect and characterize three-way relationships between a TF, its target gene, and the accessibility of the TF\u2019s binding site, using single-cell RNA and ATAC multiomic data. We apply TRIPOD to interrogate cell-type-specific regulatory logic in peripheral blood mononuclear cells and contrast our results to detections from enhancer databases, cis-eQTL studies, ChIP-seq experiments, and TF knockdown\/knockout studies. We then apply TRIPOD to mouse embryonic brain data during neurogenesis and gliogenesis and identified known and novel putative regulatory relationships, validated by ChIP-seq and PLAC-seq. Finally, we demonstrate TRIPOD on SHARE-seq data of differentiating mouse hair follicle cells and identify lineage-specific regulation supported by histone marks for gene activation and super-enhancer
