SUMMARY:Exhibition:When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles-based artist Shizu Saldamando was born in 1978 to parents of Mexican-American and Japanese-American descent and raised in San Francisco’s Mission District. Saldamando merges painting and collage\, often using origami paper\, glitter\, or gold leaf in her compositions\, many of which are painted on wood or found surfaces. Her modern portraits and innovative methods challenge social constructs pertaining to individual and collective identity within the broader context of the “American Portrait.” Saldamando’s visual biographies\, which use her friends\, family\, and fellow members of the Chicanx creative community in Los Angeles\, create new ways of seeing and being seen.\n\nOn November 2\, 6:30-8pm\, Shizu Saldamando talks to curator Amanda Krugliak about Shizu's artistic practice and her exhibition *When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine*.\n\nAbout the artist: Shizu Saldamando is an LA based mixed media artist with an emphasis on portraiture. She received her B.A. from UCLA’s School of Arts and Architecture and her M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally and experiments with a broad range of surfaces and materials. Saldamando’s practice employs tattooing\, video\, painting and drawing on canvas\, wood\, paper\, and cloth. The work functions as homage\, as well as documentation\, of friends and peers within artistic and musical subcultures around the Los Angeles metropolitan area. She is currently represented by Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles.\n\nShizu Saldamando is the 2021 Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:This exhibt runs through December 12\, 2021.\n\nMaking art can be a transformative experience. It helps us to confront and address some of the most pressing issues of our time. Art has the power to shift the way we see and understand the world around us\, and the worlds within us. Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan invites us to consider these qualities of art\, while also grappling with the carceral system and the many ways it affects the lives of all of us.\n\nCurrently there are approximately 2.2 million people incarcerated in the United States\, and in Michigan\, there are roughly 33\,000 residents currently serving time in the prison system. Working together with a coalition of more than a dozen organizations and Michigan State University units and departments\, Free Your Mind explores the inner worlds of incarcerated individuals and the fundamental issues that shape conversations around incarceration today. The exhibition centers on four key topics of inquiry: Michigan’s length of sentencing and overcrowding in prisons\; the impact of incarceration on women\; youth incarceration\; and the dangers of COVID-19.\n\nThe exhibition features artists\, poets\, and storytellers of great achievement. The majority of these artists are either currently or formerly incarcerated. Their works on view invite us to consider the role art-making plays in prisons as a liberating force\, and offer unique perspectives on the experience of incarceration. The works also invite us to approach the subject of incarceration with an open mind. Free Your Mind aims to cultivate a greater sense of empathy for those directly impacted by incarceration and an understanding that their growth as individuals is linked to the greater health of the society we all live in\, together.\n\nFree Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan is organized by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University and curated by Steven L. Bridges\, Senior Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs\, and Janie Paul\, Senior Curator and Cofounder\, Annual Exhibitions of Art by Michigan Prisoners\, a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan. Support for this exhibition is provided by the Eli and Edythe Broad endowed exhibitions fund.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Lester Mackey\, Machine Learning Researcher\, Microsoft Research New England\, Adjunct Professor\, Department of Statistics\, Stanford University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This talk will introduce two new tools for summarizing a probability distribution more effectively than independent sampling or standard Markov chain Monte Carlo thinning:\n\n1) Given an initial n point summary (for example\, from independent sampling or a Markov chain)\, kernel thinning finds a subset of only square-root n points with comparable worst-case integration error across a reproducing kernel Hilbert space.\n\n2) If the initial summary suffers from biases due to off-target sampling\, tempering\, or burn-in\, Stein thinning simultaneously compresses the summary and improves the accuracy by correcting for these biases.\n\nThese tools are especially well-suited for tasks that incur substantial downstream computation costs per summary point like organ and tissue modeling in which each simulation consumes 1000s of CPU hours. \n\n\nLester Mackey is a statistical machine learning researcher at Microsoft Research New England and an adjunct professor at Stanford University. His current research interests include statistical machine learning\, scalable algorithms\, high-dimensional statistics\, approximate inference\, and probability. Lately\, he has been developing and analyzing scalable learning algorithms for healthcare\, climate forecasting\, approximate posterior inference\, high-energy physics\, recommender systems\, and the social good.\n\nhttps://web.stanford.edu/~lmackey/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition
DESCRIPTION:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition features the work of artists in the Linkage Project\, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) that affirms the creativity of adults who have returned from incarceration. The artists previously exhibited their work at PCAP's Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners at the University of Michigan. For some\, this exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Lab is the first opportunity to show their work since regaining their freedom. Art-making has helped these artists during the dark years of their incarceration\, and we hope the exhibition inspires visitors to learn more about how to support formerly incarcerated people reconnecting with their communities.\n\nMartín Vargas\, artist and curator of this exhibition\, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work\, but also during select Art Lab studio hours\, which will feature several of the artists working in person.\n\nConnections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition is organized by the Linkage Project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. The exhibition is curated by Martín Vargas\, Vanessa Mayesky\, Scott Tompkins\, Nico Slowik\, Kimiko Uyeda\, and Jenna VanFleteren.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. The Role of Strategic Ignorance in Indonesian Agrarian Development
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public. Register at https://myumi.ch/dOmrB\n\nThe relationship between knowledge and power in agrarian development projects has been widely acknowledged\, but what about the relationship between ignorance and power? Through analysis of Indonesia’s peatland development over the past three decades\, this talk considers how state officials\, scientists\, and corporations have deployed ignorance strategically as a means to land access and control. Drawing on long-term fieldwork in Central Kalimantan\, Indonesia\, Professor Goldstein look specifically at an area called the Mega Rice Project\, a peat swamp forest that was drained for rice production in the mid-1990s and has since undergone dramatic biophysical transformation as the peat burns and releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Since 2000\, this area has been the site of various state and NGO interventions to repair the landscape\, most of which have been deemed failures. She argues that through these peatland development projects\, elite actors have generated passive and active ignorance in ways that serve to protect the developmental status quo.\n \nJenny Goldstein is an assistant professor in the Department of Global Development at Cornell University. She has a Ph.D. in geography from UCLA and works across political ecology\, critical development studies\, and science and technology studies. She has been conducting qualitative fieldwork in Indonesia since 2010 on the political economy of socio-ecological land use change and the politics of climate change knowledge. Other research interests include the human health impacts of ecological change and the role of digital infrastructures in environmental governance. Her recent articles have been published in *Antipode*\, *Environment and Planning E*\, *Singapore Journal of Tropical Geography*\, and *Geoforum*. She is also the co-editor of the forthcoming book *The Nature of Data: Infrastructures\, Environments\, Politics* (University of Nebraska Press\, 2022) and is currently working on a book project about the role of ignorance and uncertainty in Indonesia’s peatland development and restoration.\n\n---\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact cseas@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EIHS Workshop: Burn It Down!: The Un/Making of Knowledge and Power
DESCRIPTION:Format: This is a hybrid event. Attend in person in 1014 Tisch Hall (no registration required) or stream via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/z1VQA\n\nNationalism uses mythology to bind together different peoples and ideals under a national identity. The mythos requires meaning-making\, differentiating between acceptable and transgressive\, and creating knowledge that can be passed down to maintain and sustain the national identity as canon: it is a foundation. But when the foundation of the mythology is damaged\, harmful\, or fabricated\, the threads of knowledge passed down construct an unsustainable home. When the walls of this mythology keep and parcel out those who are\, in essence\, included in the floorplan of the nation\, burning the house down may be the only logical form of recovery. Rather than a dissolutionary extreme\, Professor Padilla Peralta and other Greco-Roman Classicists of color envision\, like bell hooks\, a whole new homeplace of yearning and resistance. Therefore\, policy and politics of presence\, not absence\, define pathways forward.\n\nThis Eisenberg Institute panel features papers that interrogate disciplines and their canonical and institutional systems of knowledge in the fields of Greco-Egyptian religion\, medieval England\, eighteenth-century Russia\, and American colonial Philippines.\n\nPanelists:\n• Megan Behrend (PhD Candidate\, English Language and Literature\, University of Michigan)\n• Robert Diaz (PhD Student\, History\, University of Michigan)\n• Dora Gao (PhD Student\, Ancient History\, University of Michigan)\n• Forrest Holden (PhD Candidate\, History\, University of Michigan)\n• Ian S. Moyer (moderator\; Associate Professor\, History\, University of Michigan)\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Masculine Ideals and Dress in New Kingdom Elite Tombs
DESCRIPTION:This presentation seeks to explore the relationship between New Kingdom Egyptian masculine ideals and the types of dress used to express said ideals in the funerary context. One method to assess and better understand the Egyptian concept of gender is through the dress of the individuals. Dress has long been understood as a key expression of identity\, especially gender norms. This is especially true since dress is often the first layer of an individual’s identity experienced in social interactions—be it between two individuals meeting for the first time or a modern viewer of a tomb scene. Through an investigation of a few case studies\, I will argue that there is no single masculinity for the New Kingdom elite male. As I will show\, we can see multiple\, overlapping identities being depicted. The contexts in which the tomb owner either dons a kilt or is enrobed in a tunic differs depending on scene type and\, more importantly\, the type of masculinity wishing to be expressed. This presentation will explore the juxtaposition of both of these iterations of masculinity and their function in elite male identity formation and negotiation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Museums at Noon
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, Cody Thompson and Kendra Phelps will discuss their article\, “Preserve a Voucher Specimen! The Critical Need for Integrating Natural History Collections in Infectious Disease Studies\,” published in January 2021. With COVID-19 as an example of the failed merger of host-pathogen research with collections-based biodiversity science\, the paper reviews past cases of successful integration of museum collections with emerging infectious disease research (e.g.\, hantaviruses\, yellow fever\, parasites). The research concludes with recommendations for how public health agencies and the microbiology community can integrate their research efforts with museums using a One Health framework.\nAdditional details and registration can be found here: http://ummsp.rackham.umich.edu/tribe-event/natural-history-collections-and-pandemic-preparedness/

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:NMR and bioinformatic approaches to understanding how intrinsically disordered proteins modulate biomolecular condensates
DESCRIPTION:The role of biomolecular condensates in regulating biological function and the importance of dynamic interactions involving intrinsically disordered protein regions (IDRs) in their assembly are increasingly appreciated. Elucidating the critical interactions that govern condensation via phase separation is challenging due to the lack of applicability of standard structural biological tools to study these highly dynamic large-scale associated states and the lack of applicability of standard bioinformatic tools to study low complexity sequences that are not easily alignable. Using the C-terminal IDR (607 to 709) of CAPRIN1\, an RNA-binding protein found in cytoplasmic biomolecular condensates\, we have applied NMR methods developed by Lewis Kay to obtain site-specific information on key interactions that control phase separation and on the modulation of phase separation by post-translational modifications and ATP. We have developed\, with Alan Moses\, a bioinformatics approach for IDRs that does not require alignments and that identifies conserved molecular features (such as biophysical properties)\, termed “evolutionary signatures.” Groups of IDRs with similar evolutionary signatures are highly enriched for functional annotations and phenotypes\, including clusters that are strongly linked to particular biomolecular condensates. We can utilize a feature-based approach to understand the types of interactions within specific condensates and how disease mutations that perturb conserved features may drive pathology. We also developed a new phase separation predictive tool based on sequence statistics for different physicochemical interactions within the folded protein database that provides insights into the key interactions underlying condensates. These experimental and computational methods should enable deeper understanding of how IDRs contribute to biological regulation via biomolecular condensates.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Trans and Genderqueer Subjects in Medieval Hagiography
DESCRIPTION:Participants: \nAlicia Spencer-Hall\, Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Queen Mary University of London (UK)\nBlake Gutt\, Assistant Professor of French\, Postdoctoral Fellow\, Michigan Society of Fellows\, University of Michigan\nScott Larson\, Lecturer IV\, American Culture\, University of Michigan\nLaVelle Ridley\, Doctoral Candidate in English and Women's and Gender Studies\, University of Michigan\n\nTrans and Genderqueer Subjects in Medieval Hagiography edited by Alicia Spencer-Hall and Blake Gutt (Amsterdram University Press\, 2021) presents an interdisciplinary examination of trans and genderqueer subjects in medieval hagiography. Scholarship has productively combined analysis of medieval literary texts with modern queer theory – yet\, too often\, questions of gender are explored almost exclusively through a prism of sexuality\, rather than gender identity. This volume moves beyond such limitations\, foregrounding the richness of hagiography as a genre integrally resistant to limiting binaristic categories\, including rigid gender binaries. The collection showcases scholarship by emerging trans and genderqueer authors\, as well as the work of established researchers. Working at the vanguard of historical trans studies\, these scholars demonstrate the vital and vitally political nature of their work as medievalists. \n\nTrans and Genderqueer Subjects in Medieval Hagiography enables the re-creation of a lineage linking modern trans and genderqueer individuals to their medieval ancestors\, providing models of queer identity where much scholarship has insisted there were none\, and re-establishing the place of non-normative gender in history.\n\nThis event is part of IRWG's Gender: New Works\, New Questions series\, which spotlights recent publications by U-M faculty members and allows for deeper discussion by an interdisciplinary panel.\n\nRegister Here: https://myumi.ch/9o2bX

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Freedom at Work
DESCRIPTION:The past year has been by marked the convergence of public health\, racial justice\, economic and democratic crises. To meet the moment\, leaders have sought to heighten aspirations toward racial representation\, equity and inclusion across industries. Bold proclamations in support of Black lives\, and ambitious platforms to invest in Black livelihoods\, have been backed by billions of dollars and coalitions of hundreds of leaders across sectors. As institutions begin to implement these diversity\, equity and inclusion initiatives\, what will they establish as standards for success and indicators of progress? How will organizational leaders and their stakeholders assess whether the racial climate has transformed to reflect greater diversity\, inclusion\, equity\, and justice? During this seminar\, I will introduce a framework for pursuing Freedom at Work\, grounded in the juxtaposition between the democratic ideals of liberty and justice\, and the sociohistorical oppression of enslaved\, African-descended Americans and other minoritized racial groups. I invite scholars and practitioners to analyze relative access to various freedoms at work (i.e.\, expression\, actualization\, deviation\, transformation\, reformation)\, consider how inequity undermines these freedoms\, and examine how freedom fighters from racially diverse and occupationally diverse backgrounds can help leaders to embody the aspirations and ideals they hold for diversity\, inclusion\, equity and justice. This discussion will also explore means for placing guardrails on practices that undermine rather than uphold the liberties of communities that were long-denied access to educational opportunity\, career mobility and economic advancement. In this vein\, I take up the question of how personal leadership commitments and accountability practices might catalyze change\, sustain momentum and advance the equal exercise of freedom at work for members of minoritized racial/ethnic identity groups.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:In-Person w/ Idris Robinson: Revolutionary Horizons after the George Floyd Rebellion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this in-person conversation with philosopher/ activist Idris Robinson on social movements\, resistance\, and the George Floyd Uprising on Friday\, December 3\, 2021 @ 3:30pm in Mason Hall\, Room 1449.\n\nIn the aftermath of the CHAZ occupation in downtown Seattle\, Idris Robinson presented “How It Might Should Be Done”: a public talk intended to survey the horizon of revolutionary potential uncovered by the George Floyd Rebellion during the hot summer of 2020. The revised essay of the same title\, published in Ill Will that August\, is seen in radical circles as one of the definitive texts of the uprising. In ten putative theses\, ranging from identity politics\, the current pandemic\, to the legacy of black revolt\, “How It Might Should” sought to facilitate a more direct and focused discussion regarding the stakes of emancipatory transformation at the very heart of empire. Since the uprising\, the crisis has only deepened\, presenting new possibilities and dashing others: In this upcoming talk at the University of Michigan\, Idris will both reassess and expand upon previous themes\, such as a theorization of civil war as stasis\, an examination of the abolitionist race-traitor through the lens of a political theology of martyrdom\, and the libidinal death-drive suffusing American racial dynamics.\n\nIdris Robinson is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Philosophy at the University of New Mexico. For over a decade\, he has written extensively on revolt and crisis in both European and American contexts. In his properly academic research\, he works towards cultivating an open and comparative approach that encompasses both contemporary Continental and Anglo-American philosophy\, while remaining informed by insights from various pre-modern traditions. He is currently working on a dissertation on ontological realism\, logical morphology\, and the role of paradigms in the progression of Wittgenstein’s thought.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Novel Uses of Non-traditional Stable Isotopes to Geochemical Kinetics with Applications to Geological Carbon Sequestration
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, I will show the link between novel applications of non-traditional stable isotopes to geochemical kinetics and its application to carbon capture and storage (CCS). To meet the goal of limiting global warming to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius calls for storing hundreds of billion tons of CO2 in aquifers. Stored CO2 will partially dissolve into water and acidify the water. The acidified water will\, in turn\, react with minerals strongly. To predict the fate of stored CO2 thousands or tens of thousands of years after injection\, therefore\, needs an understanding of the chemical kinetics of the geochemical reactions at the most fundamental level. In recent years\, my students\, collaborators\, and I have developed an innovative isotope tracer method and have broken new ground in near-equilibrium reaction kinetics\, which fill in a critical knowledge gap relevant to CO2 storage. This presentation will give an overview of geological carbon sequestration efforts and an application of geochemical kinetics to the Sleipner Project in Norway\, the world's first industrial-scale CO2 storage project. The overlap between basic science and the societal need for climate change mitigation becomes clear through this example.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:NERS Colloquia with Kelsa Palomares of Analytical Mechanics Associates
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nFission is a high power density energy source for space applications capable of enabling high power levels for long durations which is desirable for surface power and in-space propulsion methods for crewed missions. Nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) and nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) are advanced\, in-space propulsion technologies capable of higher efficiencies than traditional chemical engines\, making them well suited to enable crewed interplanetary missions. In NTP systems\, the reactor acts as a heat exchanger and directly heats a hydrogen propellant to provide high thrust (10s – 100s klbf) at high efficiencies\, i.e. specific impulse (> 800 s). NEP systems use a reactor to generate electricity to power high-efficiency electric propulsion thrusters which enable nearly a magnitude greater specific impulse (> 2000 s)\, but at reduced thrust (0.001 – 1 lbf). Because of these attributes\, space nuclear propulsion technologies have the capability to reduce trip times on the order of half of that compared to the highest performance chemical systems and there has been renewed interest in the development of these systems for future NASA or defense applications within the U.S. There has been extensive development for both NTP and NEP systems through historic space nuclear propulsion programs\, however none of these programs have quite reached the development status desired for implementation of either system in modern missions. Primary hurdles to reactor development have centered around materials development for the extreme operating conditions desired for high-performance space reactors. In this presentation\, the state of the art\, lessons learned\, and remaining knowledge gaps from historic NTP and NEP development programs are summarized. Based on this overview\, critical components for each reactor and remaining materials development challenges are identified. \n \nKeywords: nuclear thermal propulsion\, nuclear electric propulsion\, technology maturation\, reactor\, testing\n\nBio\nKelsa Benensky Palomares\, Ph.D. is the Nuclear Systems Engineering Lead for the Advanced Projects Group of Analytical Mechanics Associates\, Inc. (AMA). Dr. Palomares has a background in the design\, testing\, and experimental investigation of new and novel concepts for nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) through NTP development programs at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center\, Oak Ridge National Laboratory\, and the Center for Space Nuclear Research. Activities have included re-design and operational verification of MSFC’s compact fuel element environmental test (CFEET) and co-authoring ORNL/LTR-2017/119\, “A Preliminary Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Fuel Qualification Plan”\, to guide the production\, irradiation testing\, and verification of NTP fuel elements for the Department of Energy. She has recently participated as the reactor-subsystem lead for an industry nuclear thermal propulsion flight demonstration study commissioned by NASA and led by AMA and served as a peer reviewer for the National Academy of Science Engineering and Medicine’s report “Space Nuclear Propulsion for Human Mars Exploration”. She currently provides subject matter expertise to ongoing reactor development efforts for NASA’s space nuclear propulsion (SNP) project. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CSAS Thomas R. Trautmann Honorary Lecture | (Indian) Animals Are Good to Think With
DESCRIPTION:Ancient and medieval Indian literature\, both religious and secular\, is saturated with animals—animal fables\, animal transformations\, animals as instructors or instructive exempla\, animals reflecting human characteristics in a mirror that is not always flattering to the humans so reflected. Much of the animal lore of the Classical period is familiar to most people with even a passing interest in India\, but this talk will explore some lesser known examples\, especially from the earlier\, Vedic period. It will highlight the accuracy of the field observation of animal physiology and behavior and the clever application of this field observation to the particulars in the human sphere. Among the topics treated will be frog mating\, hyena physiology\, and rhinoceros toes.\n\nStephanie Jamison received her PhD in Linguistics from Yale University in 1977\, specializing in historical and Indo-European linguistics. Since 2002 she has been Professor (Distinguished Professor 2014) of Asian Languages and Cultures and of Indo-European Studies at the University of California\, Los Angeles.\n\nShe publishes widely in Indo-Iranian and Indo-European linguistics\, poetics\, ritual\, mythology\, and law\, with special focus on Vedic Sanskrit. With Joel Brereton\, she produced the first complete English translation in over a century of the oldest Sanskrit text\, the Ṛg Veda: *The Rigveda: The Earliest Religious Poetry of India* (Oxford Univ.
