SUMMARY:Exhibition:When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles-based artist Shizu Saldamando was born in 1978 to parents of Mexican-American and Japanese-American descent and raised in San Francisco’s Mission District. Saldamando merges painting and collage\, often using origami paper\, glitter\, or gold leaf in her compositions\, many of which are painted on wood or found surfaces. Her modern portraits and innovative methods challenge social constructs pertaining to individual and collective identity within the broader context of the “American Portrait.” Saldamando’s visual biographies\, which use her friends\, family\, and fellow members of the Chicanx creative community in Los Angeles\, create new ways of seeing and being seen.\n\nOn November 2\, 6:30-8pm\, Shizu Saldamando talks to curator Amanda Krugliak about Shizu's artistic practice and her exhibition *When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine*.\n\nAbout the artist: Shizu Saldamando is an LA based mixed media artist with an emphasis on portraiture. She received her B.A. from UCLA’s School of Arts and Architecture and her M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally and experiments with a broad range of surfaces and materials. Saldamando’s practice employs tattooing\, video\, painting and drawing on canvas\, wood\, paper\, and cloth. The work functions as homage\, as well as documentation\, of friends and peers within artistic and musical subcultures around the Los Angeles metropolitan area. She is currently represented by Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles.\n\nShizu Saldamando is the 2021 Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Evolutionary Exploration of Emergent Execution: Genetic Programming and Weird Machines
DESCRIPTION:ZOOM MEETING\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96616169868\nPasscode: CSCS\n\nAbstract: The process of exploiting or \"hacking\" a software vulnerability can\, in many cases\, be understood as the process of discovering and then programming what Halvar Flake has called a \"weird machine\" -- a spontaneous virtual machine that supervenes on the *intended* finite state machine that the vulnerable software in question implements. A weird machine has its own peculiar instruction set and program semantics\, designed by no one and existing entirely by accident. In this seminar\, I will be demonstrating the utility of *genetic programming* (GP) as a technique for exploring the space of programs implicit in a particular variety of \"weird machine\": the variety exploited by *return-oriented programming* (ROP)\, a remote code execution technique that\, over the past two decades\, has been used by attackers to subvert the separation of writeable and executable memory imposed by various operating systems as a security feature. I will show how it is possible to evolve ROP payloads and breed them to carry out various tasks\, by means of applying certain selective pressures to \"populations\" of integer sequences\, equipped with the genetic operators of mutation and crossover. We will look particularly closely at an observed correlation between the availability of crossover (a crude form of sexual reproduction) and the likelihood of a population to discover recombinable ROP \"gadgets\" when initialized with a pool of random integers.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium: Neural mechanisms for making sense of sound
DESCRIPTION:Rapid and efficient processing of sensory cues is critical for adaptive behavior and cognitive function. In particular\, sound processing supports everyday human behaviors such as communicating with others\, avoiding oncoming traffic\, learning from a scientific talk and enjoying music and dance. Many non-human animals also rely on sound processing for communication\, danger avoidance\, food-seeking and learning. The neural mechanisms supporting such complex functions must integrate the physical attributes of incoming sounds with behavioral context\, sound meaning and previous experience. In this talk I will provide an overview of a few projects in our lab that aim to reveal the neural mechanisms supporting behavior-\, time- and learning- dependent sound processing.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | A Vineyard Garden in the Afterlife: The Shi Jun/Wirkak Tomb (580 CE) and Viticulture on the Silk Road
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance for this Zoom webinar here: https://myumi.ch/Gk4pp\n\nThis talk discusses visual representations of vineyard gardens in 6th-century China. By focusing on the sarcophagus of Shi Jun or Wirkak (494-579 CE)\, a Sogdian immigrant from Central Asia\, it explores a range of issues related to viticulture and wine making on the Silk Road\, including the spread and transformation of Dionysian motifs\, the entanglement between Buddhism and wine culture\, and above all\, the association of vineyard gardens with paradise.\n \n Jin Xu is an assistant professor of Art History and Asian Studies at Vassar College. He received his PhD in art history at the University of Chicago. His research has been focusing on religious and cultural exchanges on the Silk Road as reflected in Chinese art during the sixth and seventh centuries AD. His articles appear in journals such as the Burlington Magazine\, the Journal of Asian Studies\, and the Sino-Platonic Papers. Currently he is writing a book manuscript titled “Beyond Boundaries: Sogdian Sarcophagi and the Art of an Immigrant Community in Early Medieval China.”

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Webinar: Evaluating the Impact of Hydrologic Alterations on Salt Marsh Sustainability in a Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:Parallel grid ditches were dug in approximately 90% of mid-Atlantic and New England salt marshes from the 1920s through the 1940s. Today\, managers must navigate the effects of these past actions when making decisions about marsh hydrology and drainage that impact human health\, ecosystem services\, and marsh sustainability. Managers must also consider how stressors such as sea-level rise impact marshes. A team of scientists including staff from the Waquoit Bay Reserve in Massachusetts helped to address this challenge by working iteratively with coastal managers and restoration practitioners to develop a decision support tool for marsh hydrology management strategies that promote sustainability and continued delivery of valuable ecosystem services under future sea level rise scenarios.\n\nIn this webinar\, the project team shares both the collaborative and technical aspects of their approach and the resultant Marsh Sustainability and Hydrology Decision Support Tool. The tool predicts potential outcomes of ditch and runnel maintenance in micro- and macro-tidal salt marshes under different scenarios of suspended sediment input and sea level rise.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Optimal Control for Atom Interferometry and High-Precision Measurements
DESCRIPTION:Atomic Fountain Interferometry (AFI) is a disruptive technology for the measurement of gravitational gradients and accelerations with remarkable precision. AFI is based on the manipulation of atom cloud in a free-fall-tower using laser pulses to create a superposition of two momentum space pathways. The interferometric signal contrast is limited by variations in the initial velocity of the atoms in the cloud and variations in the laser amplitude over the cross-section of the cloud. A robust pulse scheme must provide separation\, mirroring\, and recombination of the atoms to high precision over a realistic range of these variations. In our work we apply optimal control theory to design suitable pulse sequences to improve the efficiency of the AFI device. Our methodology relies on the simulation of the interferometer's full quantum dynamics. We test the efficacy of the proposed pulse schemes using adiabatic passage with frequency-chirped pulses and explore numerical optimal control theory to generate robust pulse schemes and formulate the most general control conditions for the implementation of an interferometer. \n\nApplying optimal control theory for the efficient generation of N-atom non-classical states and their use for atom interferometry and quantum metrology are also discussed. As an example\, we design a novel pulse sequence that drives an ensemble of cold trapped atoms into an optimal squeezed state. These states have a fundamental precision scaling proportional to the inverse of the number of atoms\, known as the Heisenberg limit. \n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Functional MRI 2021-22 Speaker Series with Alberto L. Vazquez\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nOptical and magnetic resonance based imaging methods are uncovering information about brain function and dysfunction with an unprecedented level of detail. Transgenic rodent models have enabled the dissection of neuronal cell-type contributions to vascular responses and hemodynamic imaging in the mammalian brain. These studies motivate the use of high-resolution fMRI for estimating excitatory and inhibitory activity from hemodynamic responses as well as monitoring brain dysfunction in an array of brain diseases. DESCRIPTION:By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. DeVotchKa is requiring proof of vaccination or negative test within 48 hours.\n\nA cross-pollination of numerous influences\, including cabaret\, spaghetti Westerns\, norteño\, punk\, and the immigrant dance music of Eastern Europe\, Colorado-based quartet DeVotchKa\, formed in Denver by multi-instrumentalists Nick Urata (vocals\, guitar\, trumpet)\, \n\nTom Hagerman (violin\, accordion)\, Jeanie Schroder (sousaphone\, bass) and percussionist Shawn King\, emerged as unlikely indie heroes in the mid-2000s infusing modern indie music with a global flavor.\n\nThey found widespread success in 2006 with their Grammy-nominated soundtrack to the hit indie film Little Miss Sunshine. Signing with revered indie\, Anti-\, the band delivered A Mad and Faithful Telling in early 2008\, reaching the number nine slot on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. A lengthy world tour followed\, including stops at major festivals like Bonnaroo\, Lollapalooza\, and Bumbershoot. After doing more soundtrack work\, this time for the 2009 comedy I Love You Phillip Morris\, the group returned to the studio for 2011’s moody and triumphant 100 Lovers. Embarking on another world tour\, they collaborated with the Colorado Symphony on the 2012 concert album Live with the Colorado Symphony. Over the next several years\, Urata became increasingly involved in his own film composition career\, scoring movies like Crazy Stupid Love\, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot\, Paddington\, and the Netflix series A Series of Unfortunate Events. Meanwhile\, the band regrouped for a lengthy recording session\, eventually returning in 2018 with their sixth album\, This Night Falls Forever\, this time via Concord Records.\n\nSigned poster available for $30 - choose the Ticket + Poster ticket to get the poster!

Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.\n\nSince their arrival on the scene in 2015\, Nefesh Mountain has been hailed as one of today’s formative boundary pushing Bluegrass/Americana bands. They’re among the first to truly give voice and openly represent Jewish American culture\, tradition\, values and spirituality in the world of American roots music. In a testament to the unbridled imagination and extraordinary grace of their musicianship\, each track on Songs for the Sparrows ineffably evokes the sensation of roaming through the unknown. True to the album’s spirit of loving inclusivity\, Lindberg and Zasloff\, have created an elegantly wayward sound by melding elements of everything from Americana and Appalachian bluegrass to Celtic folk and Eastern European music. Not only a reflection of their vast musical knowledge\, that open-hearted embracing of so many eclectic genres also speaks to the joyful curiosity that animates every aspect of their artistry.
