SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Econometrics: Optimal Multi-Dimensional Mechanisms.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We characterize the properties of optimal selling mechanisms for the multiple-good auction and monopoly problems. In particular\, for the uniform distribution of agent types\, we show that the participation region is the same for auction and monopoly problems. We also compute the allocation in the optimal selling mechanism in the auction setting. Analytically\, we derive the optimal selling mechanism for several other examples of the monopolistic screening model.\n\n* To join the seminar\, please contact at econ.events@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles-based artist Shizu Saldamando was born in 1978 to parents of Mexican-American and Japanese-American descent and raised in San Francisco’s Mission District. Saldamando merges painting and collage\, often using origami paper\, glitter\, or gold leaf in her compositions\, many of which are painted on wood or found surfaces. Her modern portraits and innovative methods challenge social constructs pertaining to individual and collective identity within the broader context of the “American Portrait.” Saldamando’s visual biographies\, which use her friends\, family\, and fellow members of the Chicanx creative community in Los Angeles\, create new ways of seeing and being seen.\n\nOn November 2\, 6:30-8pm\, Shizu Saldamando talks to curator Amanda Krugliak about Shizu's artistic practice and her exhibition *When This is All Over / Cuando Esto Termine*.\n\nAbout the artist: Shizu Saldamando is an LA based mixed media artist with an emphasis on portraiture. She received her B.A. from UCLA’s School of Arts and Architecture and her M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally and experiments with a broad range of surfaces and materials. Saldamando’s practice employs tattooing\, video\, painting and drawing on canvas\, wood\, paper\, and cloth. The work functions as homage\, as well as documentation\, of friends and peers within artistic and musical subcultures around the Los Angeles metropolitan area. She is currently represented by Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles.\n\nShizu Saldamando is the 2021 Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts at the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Cryptocurrency: Economic and Environmental Impacts and U.S. Policy
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the Thursday Morning Lecture Series on Our Changing Economic Landscape.\n\nCryptocurrency is often in the news lately\, yet its effects on the U.S. economy are complicated. After a brief introduction of cryptocurrency from a technology perspective\, we will explore its role as an investment and/or a currency\, and its potential effects on productivity and economic growth in the U.S. and globally. \n\nFurther\, we will understand why it has been used to pay ransom related to cyber-hacking\, and its environmental impacts due to its use of high levels of processing power. How should financial regulation policy address cryptocurrency in the U.S. going forward?\n\nOur speaker\, Robert (Bob) Dittmar is a Professor of Finance at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business\, the Faculty co-Director of the Ross Fintech Initiative\, and the Faculty Director of the Tozzi Finance Center. \n\nHis research focuses on empirical determinants of financial security prices\, including equities\, fixed income securities\, and derivatives. His work has been published in the Journal of Finance\, Journal of Financial Economics\, Review of Financial Studies\, and Journal of Econometrics. \n\nProfessor Dittmar received his Ph.D. in Finance from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2000\, and previously taught at the Kelley School of Business\, Indiana University. He has taught courses at Ross in Fintech\, Asset Management\, Fixed Income Securities\, and Options and Derivatives at the BBA\, MBA\, and Ph.D. level.\n\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:This exhibt runs through December 12\, 2021.\n\nMaking art can be a transformative experience. It helps us to confront and address some of the most pressing issues of our time. Art has the power to shift the way we see and understand the world around us\, and the worlds within us. Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan invites us to consider these qualities of art\, while also grappling with the carceral system and the many ways it affects the lives of all of us.\n\nCurrently there are approximately 2.2 million people incarcerated in the United States\, and in Michigan\, there are roughly 33\,000 residents currently serving time in the prison system. Working together with a coalition of more than a dozen organizations and Michigan State University units and departments\, Free Your Mind explores the inner worlds of incarcerated individuals and the fundamental issues that shape conversations around incarceration today. The exhibition centers on four key topics of inquiry: Michigan’s length of sentencing and overcrowding in prisons\; the impact of incarceration on women\; youth incarceration\; and the dangers of COVID-19.\n\nThe exhibition features artists\, poets\, and storytellers of great achievement. The majority of these artists are either currently or formerly incarcerated. Their works on view invite us to consider the role art-making plays in prisons as a liberating force\, and offer unique perspectives on the experience of incarceration. The works also invite us to approach the subject of incarceration with an open mind. Free Your Mind aims to cultivate a greater sense of empathy for those directly impacted by incarceration and an understanding that their growth as individuals is linked to the greater health of the society we all live in\, together.\n\nFree Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan is organized by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University and curated by Steven L. Bridges\, Senior Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs\, and Janie Paul\, Senior Curator and Cofounder\, Annual Exhibitions of Art by Michigan Prisoners\, a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan. Support for this exhibition is provided by the Eli and Edythe Broad endowed exhibitions fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition
DESCRIPTION:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition features the work of artists in the Linkage Project\, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) that affirms the creativity of adults who have returned from incarceration. The artists previously exhibited their work at PCAP's Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners at the University of Michigan. For some\, this exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Lab is the first opportunity to show their work since regaining their freedom. Art-making has helped these artists during the dark years of their incarceration\, and we hope the exhibition inspires visitors to learn more about how to support formerly incarcerated people reconnecting with their communities.\n\nMartín Vargas\, artist and curator of this exhibition\, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work\, but also during select Art Lab studio hours\, which will feature several of the artists working in person.\n\nConnections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition is organized by the Linkage Project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. The exhibition is curated by Martín Vargas\, Vanessa Mayesky\, Scott Tompkins\, Nico Slowik\, Kimiko Uyeda\, and Jenna VanFleteren.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Queer Jews and Muslims: A Roundtable on Race\, Religion\, Gender and Sexuality
DESCRIPTION:Katrina Daly Thompson\, University of Wisconsin – Madison\nRobert Phillips\, Ball State University\nEdwige Crucifix\, Bryn Mawr College\nShanon Shah\, King's College London\nWith Adi Saleem Bharat\, University of Michigan\n\nRegister at: https://myumi.ch/qgDEy\n\nThis roundtable brings together scholars from a range of disciplinary backgrounds in the humanities and social sciences to reflect on historical and contemporary representations and experiences of queer Jews and Muslims in a wide range of geographies. By placing the question of gender and sexuality at the heart—and not merely as a subsection—of (ethno-)religious identities and spiritualties\, the speakers queer normative understandings of Jewishness/Judaism and Muslimness/Islam in order to broaden the horizon of Jewish and Muslim coexistence and\, perhaps more importantly\, co-resistance.\n\nKatrina Daly Thompson (she/they) is Professor of African Cultural Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, where she is also the Director of the Program in African Languages\, and a core faculty member in Second Language Acquisition. She holds additional affiliations in Anthropology\, Gender & Women’s Studies\, Religious Studies\, Folklore\, and the Middle East Studies Program. Her research uses critical ethnography and critical discourse analysis to examine African and Muslim discourse\, with specific projects in Zimbabwe\, Tanzania\, North America\, and online. Her third monograph\, Misfits\, Rebels\, and Queers: An Ethnography of Muslims on the Margins\, is under contract with NYU Press.\n\nRobert Phillips is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Associate Director of the Jewish Studies Program at Ball State University. He lectures on ethnographic methods and the anthropology of religion and technology with much of his empirical research conducted in India and Singapore. Most recently\, Phillips has published Virtual Activism: Sexuality\, the Internet\, and a Social Movement in Singapore (University of Toronto Press\, 2020). Currently\, Phillips is looking at how queer and Jewish individuals are embracing alternative models in the healing of individual and collective trauma.\n\nDr. Edwige Crucifix is a scholar of Modern and Contemporary Francophone literature\, specializing in gender studies and postcolonial theory. Her current book project explores mechanisms of identity construction in colonial society in the works of French and North African women. Her research and teaching stems from an interdisciplinary interest in modes of cultural resistance\, explored in previous publications dedicated to modernist aesthetics\, nineteenth-century bourgeois taste\, and inter-war Jewish identity. \n\nDr. Shanon Shah conducts research on minority religions and alternative spiritualities at the Information Network Focus on Religious Movements (Inform)\, based at King's College London\, and is Tutor in Interfaith Relations at the University of London's Divinity programme. He is also the Director of Faith for the Climate\, a faith-inspired network of climate justice activists\, and an editor at Critical Muslim\, the flagship quarterly publication of the Muslim Institute (a London-based educational fellowship). \n\nAdi Saleem Bharat is an LSA Collegiate Fellow and\, from Fall 2022\, an assistant professor in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan. He is also an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Manchester's Center for Jewish Studies. His research examines the intersection of race\, religion\, gender\, and sexuality in contemporary France\, with a focus on Jews and Muslims. He is currently working on a manuscript tentatively titled Beyond Jewish-Muslim Relations\, which examines and challenges the construction of a polarized\, oppositional category of \"Jewish-Muslim relations\" in media and political discourse in France.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Anti-Racism Is Never Not Intersectional
DESCRIPTION:Panelists:\n-Elizabeth Cole\, Faculty Associate Director\, National Center for Institutional Diversity\; Professor of Women's and Gender Studies\, Psychology\, and Afroamerican and African Studies\n-Elizabeth González\, Education & Training Program Manager\, Spectrum Center\n-SaraEllen Strongman\, Assistant Professor\, Afroamerican and African Studies \n-Ruby C. Tapia\, Chair\, Department of Women's and Gender Studies\; Associate Professor\, English Language & Literature and Women's and Gender Studies \n\nModerator: Anna Kirkland\, Director\, Institute for Research on Women and Gender\; Arthur F. Thurnau Professor\, Women's and Gender Studies\; Political Science\, Sociology\, and Health Management & Policy (by courtesy)\n\nThe racial reckoning during 2020 sparked renewed energy to address pervasive structural racism and the resulting disparate inequities and injustices impacting minoritized communities and communities of color in the US. Institutions of higher education across the nation have expressed commitments to address racism in their organizations. Similarly\, many institutions across the country have sought to focus new efforts to end harassment based on sex\, sexuality\, and gender\, yet these efforts have often operated separately from the fight to address systemic racism. \n\nAt the College of Literature\, Science & the Arts (LSA) at the University of Michigan\, working groups have produced both an LSA Task Force on Anti-Racism and Racial Equality report and a Preventing Sexual Harassment report in recent months. Additionally\, the university commissioned reports on high-profile cases of sexual misconduct (Philbert and Anderson) and created campus initiatives in response to national conversations around anti-racism.\n\nThis expert panel will help us to understand how systems of racism and sexism support and maintain each other\, discuss recent efforts to grapple with these issues at Michigan\, frame them within a broader theoretical and political context and then provide suggestions on how to move from intention to action and how to enact structural change that is transformational and sustainable.\n\nCosponsored by: The Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, the Initiative on Gender Based Violence and Sexual Harassment at IRWG\, the Women’s & Gender Studies Department\, and the National Center for Institutional Diversity’s Anti-Racism Collaborative\n\nThis webinar will be recorded. Please register to receive the Zoom recording.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Welcome to the Indigenous Future
DESCRIPTION:A Digital Studies Institute panel discussion\, co-presented by the University of Michigan and the Consulate General of Canada\n\nThe logic of so-called \"technological evolution\" categorizes innovations into binaries of Old/Defunct and New/Good\, without a fluid understanding of time\, influence\, or use. Likewise\, settler cultural studies compartmentalize indigenous peoples and practices as outside of the present time and space. This panel discussion taps into growing movements around the discussion of indigenous technologies and indigenous futures (itself a nod to Afrofuturism)\, taking a more expansive view of the holistic relationship between people and technologies. The panelists are coders\, artists\, and theorists who investigate not only the history but also the present and future of indigenous technologies\, as well as the language and methodologies used to study them.\n\nPresenters include:\n\n- Amelia Winger-Bearskin\, Banks Preeminence Chair and Associate Professor of Artificial Intelligence and the Arts\, University of Florida\, Digital Worlds Institute\;\n- Ron Eglash\, Professor of Information\, School of Information and Professor of Art and Design\, Penny W Stamps School of Art and Design\, University of Michigan\;\n- Jason Edward Lewis\, University Research Chair in Computational Media and the Indigenous Future Imaginary at Concordia University\;\n\nModerated by DSI Executive Director Marisa Olson\, with opening remarks from the Consulate General of Canada.\n\nLive Captioning will be provided.\n\nRegister here: https://bit.ly/3rvri5H

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:\"EPICode\, a multiplexed epitope barcoding strategy that enables dynamic cellular phenotypic screens\"
DESCRIPTION:Pooled genetic libraries have improved screening throughput for mapping genotypes to phenotypes. However\, selectable phenotypes are limiting\, restricting screening to outcomes with a low spatiotemporal resolution. Here\, we integrated live-cell imaging with pooled library-based screening. To enable intracellular multiplexing\, we developed a method\, called EPICode (Epitope-Phenotype Immunofluorescence barCode)\, that uses a combination of short epitopes to facilitate optical screening. By using the subcellular localization of the barcode as an additional channel\, our method exponentially increases multiplexing capacity. Thus\, after using live-cell microscopy to characterize a phenotype of interest\, subjected to sequential stimulatory/inhibitory manipulations\, the genotype of each cell in the population can be identified. To demonstrate applicability\, we developed a live-cell PKA kinase translocation reporter with improved sensitivity and specificity. The use of epitopes as fluorescent barcodes introduces a scalable strategy for high-throughput screening broadly applicable to protein engineering and drug discovery settings where image-based phenotyping is desired.\nDetails:\nDATE: Thursday\, December 9\, 2021\nTIME: 4:00-5:00 pm\nZOOM LINK: https://umich.zoom.us/j/97723483179

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC/CM Seminar | Outrunning Decoherence: Fast State Preparation for Accurate\, Near-Ish-Term Variational Quantum Computing
DESCRIPTION:Ab initio molecular simulation provides a sub-atomic understanding of chemical reactions and properties. However\, due to the exponential scaling of many-body simulations\, one can only obtain approximate solutions to the electronic Schrodinger equation. Although\, in principle one can increase the sophistication of an approximation arbitrarily until a desired accuracy is reached\, more sophisticated calculations rapidly become intractable for even the largest supercomputers. Quantum computers provide a promising route to bypass these limitations in molecular simulation. However\, current and near term quantum devices suffer from environmental noise and gate errors\, thus limiting the calculations able to be achieved. In this talk\, I will discuss basic ideas concerning the simulation of molecules on quantum devices\, and describe two different algorithmic directions our collaborative team has recently devised for trying to extract the most computational work out of noisy devices.\n\n

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:From Theory to Practice: Conversations for Wellness—Graduate and Professional Student Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:While there is often stigma around seeking mental health services\, most people struggle with maintaining mental well-being at some point in their life. This often becomes more challenging depending on our environment and identities. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness\, one in four college students have a diagnosable mental illness\, with depression being the most prevalent. Furthermore\, the prevalence and severity of symptoms is dependent on education\, race\, gender\, sexual orientation\, and gender identity. A University of Michigan study showed that half of all graduate students are experiencing psychological distress\, with a higher prevalence of mental-health problems than the general highly educated population. Black men experience worse mental health outcomes than any other racial group of men and are also less likely to seek mental health services. Members of the LGBTQI are two to four times more likely to experience a mental health issue. As we all have many identities that contribute to how we perceive and navigate mental health\, this mental health mini-series serves to highlight research and foster constructive conversations around identifying signs of mental illness\, understanding how our identities impact our mental health\, and maintaining mental well-being.\nSpeaker: Lisa Kaler is an expert in undergraduate and graduate student mental health and well-being. She focuses on how institutions can promote positive mental health through systemic change. Kaler uses a critical lens to understand how mental health issues intersect with social justice.\nPanelists: Nneoma Edokobi\, Medical Student\, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine\; Chiamaka U. Ukachukwu\, M.S.\, Ph.D. Candidate\, Pharmacology\, University of Michigan\; Sierra Nance\, Ph.D. Candidate\, Molecular and Integrative Physiology\, University of Michigan\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/G1rjb.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CJS Lecture Series | Creation of and Participation in Networks: Visiting the Japan Biographical Database
DESCRIPTION:Please take note of the 7pm (Ann Arbor time) starting time.\n\nFor the edited volume Women and Networks in Nineteenth Century Japan (University of Michigan Press\, 2020) ten scholars gathered to identify and examine women’s involvement in networks. With the aim to heighten awareness of the gendered history of research on networks\, all ten authors thus placed women in the center of their analyses. The result paints a heterogeneous picture which preempts the determination of one simple network pattern or a uniform type of networks particular to “women.” Rather the diversity indicate that not gender alone but many other factors play into the individual’s form of participation in networks. In the presentation\, I take this specific result of the volume further by making a comparison of the involvement in networks by a husband and a wife: Rai Shizu and Rai Shunsui. I do with the help of the visualization tools of the Japan Biographical Database.\n \n \n Bettina Gramlich-Oka is Professor of Japanese History at the Faculty of Liberal Arts\, Sophia University. Some of her publications include Thinking Like a Man: Tadano Makuzu (Brill\, 2006) and the coedited volume Economic Thought in Early Modern Japan (Brill\, 2010). In the past years\, her research centers on the exploration of networks of the Rai family from Hiroshima during the Tokugawa period. The development of the online Japan Biographical Database (https://proxy.qualtrics.com/proxy/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fjbdb.jp%2F&token=cC8PSwwI5mKuO7eTtsIPENF1WA0Jspur9zV%2B3UAd1Ig%3D) is part of this endeavor\, as well as the coedited volume with Anne Walthall\, Miyazaki Fumiko\, Sugano Noriko\, Women and Networks in Nineteenth Century Japan (University of Michigan Press\, 2020). Gramlich-Oka is currently the chief editor of Monumenta Nipponica\n\nPlease register for the Zoom event here:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Fhy9la3qQSyAk8yeM7hKhg\n\nThis colloquium series is made possible by the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Considering Matthew Shepard
DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with the U-M Museum of Art (UMMA)\, Considering Matthew Shepard is an evocative and compassionate musical response to the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard in 1998\, one of America’s most notorious anti-gay hate crimes. Shepard’s tragic death ultimately led to the creation of the Matthew Shepard Foundation and provided a catalyst for legislation that expanded the definition of a hate crime to include sexual orientation. In 2009\, Congress passed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Composer Craig Hella Johnson had a profoundly personal reaction to both the murder and its resonance. The Shepard family and Foundation engaged with Johnson to create the Grammy-nominated oratorio\, Considering Matthew Shepard\, which draws from fragments of Shepard’s personal diary. \nIn November 2021\, the U-M School of Music\, Theatre &amp\; Dance and UMMA created a live performance film of the U-M Chamber Choir performing the oratorio under the direction of award winning conductor Eugene Rogers\, acclaimed stage director Matt Kunkel\, and Emmy-award winning film producer Bob Berg\, with pianist Scott VanOrnum\, production designer Harrison Hoffert\, and narrated by Priscilla Lindsay. The live performance was presented as part of the UMMA exhibition Oh honey...A queer reading of the collection and the 50th anniversary of the U-M Spectrum Center. \nThis Penny Stamps Speaker Series event offers a public screening of the performance film\, followed by a conversation with Rogers and Johnson about the work.\n
