How do teachers interweave the politics of immigration into world history and civics curriculum?  What makes a place a home for someone\, and how do we build on the storyscapes of the under-written histories of anti-Asian racism and Asian-American identity?\n\nRemoving the screen from “over there\,” experts in Area and Asian-American studies will explore identity\, immigration and nationality and provide a discussion forum for applying these ideas into classroom use.  Content covered will include snapshots from mid-19th century-20th century histories of China\, Japan and Korea\; the push-pull factors for immigration\; exclusionary immigration policies\; and the nuances of Asian American identity. DESCRIPTION:This exhibt runs through December 12\, 2021.\n\nMaking art can be a transformative experience. It helps us to confront and address some of the most pressing issues of our time. Art has the power to shift the way we see and understand the world around us\, and the worlds within us. Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan invites us to consider these qualities of art\, while also grappling with the carceral system and the many ways it affects the lives of all of us.\n\nCurrently there are approximately 2.2 million people incarcerated in the United States\, and in Michigan\, there are roughly 33\,000 residents currently serving time in the prison system. Working together with a coalition of more than a dozen organizations and Michigan State University units and departments\, Free Your Mind explores the inner worlds of incarcerated individuals and the fundamental issues that shape conversations around incarceration today. The exhibition centers on four key topics of inquiry: Michigan’s length of sentencing and overcrowding in prisons\; the impact of incarceration on women\; youth incarceration\; and the dangers of COVID-19.\n\nThe exhibition features artists\, poets\, and storytellers of great achievement. The majority of these artists are either currently or formerly incarcerated. Their works on view invite us to consider the role art-making plays in prisons as a liberating force\, and offer unique perspectives on the experience of incarceration. The works also invite us to approach the subject of incarceration with an open mind. Free Your Mind aims to cultivate a greater sense of empathy for those directly impacted by incarceration and an understanding that their growth as individuals is linked to the greater health of the society we all live in\, together.\n\nFree Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan is organized by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University and curated by Steven L. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: Nov 12\, 2021 - January 22\, 2022\nPublic Opening and Award Ceremony: November 12\, 2021\nOrganized by Stamps Gallery\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative is a new awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. This inaugural program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. \nThe call for work went out to artists across the state in March 2020. In July 2020\, Envision jurors Carla Acevedo-Yates\, Curator\, MCA Chicago\; Ken Aptekar (BFA &#039\;73)\, Artist\; and Loring Randolph (BFA &#039\;04)\, Director\, Frieze New York\; gathered virtually to review the submissions. \nAfter evaluating 259 submissions from across the state\, the jurors selected five finalists to receive a group exhibition at Stamps Gallery. \nOn December 10\, 2021\, one finalist will be named the 2021 Envision Award recipient\, receiving a cash prize. \nThe exhibition will tour to different venues in Michigan\, including the Crooked Tree Art Center in Traverse City. \nEnvision Finalists\nNayda Collazo-Llorens examines the way in which we perceive and process information\, dealing with concepts of navigation\, memory\, language\, hyperconnectivity and noise through her interdisciplinary creative practice. DESCRIPTION:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition features the work of artists in the Linkage Project\, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) that affirms the creativity of adults who have returned from incarceration. The artists previously exhibited their work at PCAP's Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners at the University of Michigan. For some\, this exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Lab is the first opportunity to show their work since regaining their freedom. Art-making has helped these artists during the dark years of their incarceration\, and we hope the exhibition inspires visitors to learn more about how to support formerly incarcerated people reconnecting with their communities.\n\nMartín Vargas\, artist and curator of this exhibition\, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work\, but also during select Art Lab studio hours\, which will feature several of the artists working in person.\n\nConnections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition is organized by the Linkage Project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. Since 2007\, it has become a yearly tradition for The Ragbirds to present this unique family-friendly holiday show called Ebird & Friends. The songs and artists change from year to year\, but the spirit of the event is community\, the soul is creativity and the show is unforgettable. \"Ebird\"is Erin Zindle\, lead singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist of The Ragbirds. Erin’s budding childhood love of music was sparked at Christmastime. The holidays were the one time each year that the entire Zindle family gathered to make music together\, and that early communal experience of music took deep roots. Fiddles\, horns\, bagpipes\, guitars\, and instruments from all over the world will be sounding their voices together in harmony. Expect to be entertained\, surprised\, cheered\, and warmed by this collaborative artistic performance of new and old songs\, including Ragbirds' original songs inspired by the holiday. This show has become a phenomenon and it shows no signs of slowing down.

The film follows a curious and adventurous Dolichorhynchops – familiarly known as a ‘dolly’ – as she travels through the most dangerous oceans in history. Along the way\, she encounters long-necked plesiosaurs\, giant turtles\, enormous fish\, fierce sharks\, and one of the most dangerous sea monsters of all\, the mosasaur. Shepard’s tragic death ulti­mately led to the cre­ation of the Matthew Shep­ard Foun­da­tion and pro­vided a cat­a­lyst for leg­is­la­tion that expanded the def­i­n­i­tion of a hate crime to include sex­ual ori­en­ta­tion. In 2009\, Con­gress passed the Matthew Shep­ard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Pre­ven­tion Act. Com­poser Craig Hella John­son had a pro­foundly per­sonal reac­tion to both the mur­der and its res­o­nance. The Shep­ard fam­ily and Foun­da­tion engaged with John­son to cre­ate the Grammy-nom­i­nated ora­to­rio\, Con­sid­er­ing Matthew Shep­ard\, which draws from frag­ments of Shepard’s per­sonal diary. \n \nIn Novem­ber 2021\, the U‑M School of Music\, The­atre & Dance and UMMA cre­ated filmed a live performance of the U‑M Cham­ber Choir per­form­ing the ora­to­rio under the direc­tion of award win­ning con­duc­tor Eugene Rogers\, acclaimed stage direc­tor Matt Kunkel\, and Emmy-award win­ning film pro­ducer Bob Berg\, with pianist Scott VanOr­num\, pro­duc­tion designer Har­ri­son Hof­fert\, and nar­rated by Priscilla Lind­say. SUMMARY:Performance:Changemakers | A Collectively Devised Play about the Early History of the University of Michigan School of Social Work
DESCRIPTION:As racial tensions rise on and off campus\, three School of Social Work students overcome their differences as the School rallies itself for change in the face of the Great Depression.\n\nThis play\, commissioned for the University of Michigan\, School of Social Work Centennial (1921-2021)\, in collaboration with the Residential College Drama Program\, focuses on the early history of the School and on the students and faculty who worked to create meaningful change in the world. This early period begins at the end of a global Spanish Flu pandemic and World War I and ends during the height of the Great Depression. This period saw the first undergraduate social work curriculum launched on the Ann Arbor campus and ends as the program moves to Detroit where the social work program remained until 1950.\n\nAmong the major themes is the struggle for racial justice\, including challenging segregation on the University of Michigan campus. Early social work students were involved in an inter-racial alliance group\, the Negro-Caucasian Club\, that started in 1925 and the efforts of those students are depicted in the play.\n\nThis production is Directed by Aria Davis. Produced by Rich Tolman (SSW) and Kate Mendeloff (RC Drama). The cast includes faculty and students from the School of Social Work community.
