DESCRIPTION:This exhibt runs through December 12\, 2021.\n\nMaking art can be a transformative experience. It helps us to confront and address some of the most pressing issues of our time. Art has the power to shift the way we see and understand the world around us\, and the worlds within us. Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan invites us to consider these qualities of art\, while also grappling with the carceral system and the many ways it affects the lives of all of us.\n\nCurrently there are approximately 2.2 million people incarcerated in the United States\, and in Michigan\, there are roughly 33\,000 residents currently serving time in the prison system. Working together with a coalition of more than a dozen organizations and Michigan State University units and departments\, Free Your Mind explores the inner worlds of incarcerated individuals and the fundamental issues that shape conversations around incarceration today. The exhibition centers on four key topics of inquiry: Michigan’s length of sentencing and overcrowding in prisons\; the impact of incarceration on women\; youth incarceration\; and the dangers of COVID-19.\n\nThe exhibition features artists\, poets\, and storytellers of great achievement. The majority of these artists are either currently or formerly incarcerated. Their works on view invite us to consider the role art-making plays in prisons as a liberating force\, and offer unique perspectives on the experience of incarceration. The works also invite us to approach the subject of incarceration with an open mind. Free Your Mind aims to cultivate a greater sense of empathy for those directly impacted by incarceration and an understanding that their growth as individuals is linked to the greater health of the society we all live in\, together.\n\nFree Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan is organized by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University and curated by Steven L. Bridges\, Senior Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs\, and Janie Paul\, Senior Curator and Cofounder\, Annual Exhibitions of Art by Michigan Prisoners\, a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan. DESCRIPTION:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition features the work of artists in the Linkage Project\, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) that affirms the creativity of adults who have returned from incarceration. The artists previously exhibited their work at PCAP's Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners at the University of Michigan. For some\, this exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Lab is the first opportunity to show their work since regaining their freedom. Art-making has helped these artists during the dark years of their incarceration\, and we hope the exhibition inspires visitors to learn more about how to support formerly incarcerated people reconnecting with their communities.\n\nMartín Vargas\, artist and curator of this exhibition\, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work\, but also during select Art Lab studio hours\, which will feature several of the artists working in person.\n\nConnections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition is organized by the Linkage Project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. SUMMARY:Performance:Changemakers | A Collectively Devised Play about the Early History of the University of Michigan School of Social Work
DESCRIPTION:As racial tensions rise on and off campus\, three School of Social Work students overcome their differences as the School rallies itself for change in the face of the Great Depression.\n\nThis play\, commissioned for the University of Michigan\, School of Social Work Centennial (1921-2021)\, in collaboration with the Residential College Drama Program\, focuses on the early history of the School and on the students and faculty who worked to create meaningful change in the world. This early period begins at the end of a global Spanish Flu pandemic and World War I and ends during the height of the Great Depression. This period saw the first undergraduate social work curriculum launched on the Ann Arbor campus and ends as the program moves to Detroit where the social work program remained until 1950.\n\nAmong the major themes is the struggle for racial justice\, including challenging segregation on the University of Michigan campus. Early social work students were involved in an inter-racial alliance group\, the Negro-Caucasian Club\, that started in 1925 and the efforts of those students are depicted in the play.\n\nThis production is Directed by Aria Davis. Produced by Rich Tolman (SSW) and Kate Mendeloff (RC Drama). The cast includes faculty and students from the School of Social Work community.

DESCRIPTION:Bring your laptop\, bring your books\, bring your notes\, and set up shop at one of the many tables or couches we’ll have stationed throughout the museum and our galleries.\n\nIn addition to ample study space\, throughout exam week you’ll find special self-care and stress-relieving activities planned around the museum.\n\nQuiet study spaces are also available in the UMMA Multipurpose Room (the room next to the big mural at the center of UMMA) and in our classrooms (several rooms on the lower level – take the stairs by the front check-in desk!)\n\nStudy spaces and all events are free and open to the public.

See our full list of COVID-19 safety requirements on Randazzo's website.\n\n“The Short and Suite Nutcracker” is Randazzo Dance Company’s holiday kaleidoscope of mixed dance styles coupled with the magic of the Nutcracker Suite. First half of the program includes La Cinquantaine\, a delicate and regal air from the olden times performed by the junior company dancers\, Pas De Quatre ballet variations capturing the essence of the delicate Romantic style\, and a Tribute to Miles Davis\, tap and jazz dances performed with a live jazz combo to celebrate the music of the great Miles Davis. On the second half of the program Clara and the Nutcracker Prince recount their fight with the evil Mouse Queen and travel to the enchanted land where they meet the Sugar Plum Fairy\, Mother Ginger and her little Gumdrops and other beloved friends. When she was up in Somerville\, Massachusetts\, in the early nineties\, knowing that she wanted to pursue music or theater\, she worked backstage at the Opera Company of Boston and wrote plays on the side. But she was in Boston\, and the muse led her into the myriad open mics and tip jar gigs of booming folk revival. She opened a trunk of old songs and started writing new ones. Dar still loves every minute of her job and always advises folks to “follow their muse.” She still goes wherever the muse leads her\, which\, presently\, is right back on her couch\, coffee on the coffee table\, guitar in hand\, writing her next batch of songs. Come by and pick up a copy of Dar's new middle-school children's novel\, Amalee.
