SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Semantic-Aware Robotic Mapping in Unknown\, Loosely Structured Environments
DESCRIPTION:Chair: Ryan Eustice\n\nAbstract:\nRobotic mapping is the problem of inferring a representation of a robot’s surroundings using noisy measurements as it navigates through an environment. As robotic systems move toward more challenging behaviors in more complex scenarios\, such systems require richer maps so that the robot understands the significance of the scene and objects within. \nThis dissertation focuses on semantic-aware robotic mapping in unknown\, loosely structured environments. The first contribution is a Bayesian kernel inference semantic mapping framework that formulates a unified probabilistic model for occupancy and semantics\, and provides a closed-form solution for scalable dense semantic mapping. This framework significantly reduces the computational complexity of learning-based continuous semantic mapping and achieves high accuracy in the meantime. Next\, a novel and flexible multi-task multi-layer Bayesian mapping framework is proposed to provide even richer environmental information. A two-layer robotic map of semantics and traversability is built as a strong example. Moreover\, it is readily extendable to include more layers according to needs. Both mapping algorithms were verified using publicly available datasets or through experimental results on a Cassie-series bipedal robot. Finally\, instead of modeling the terrain traversability using metrics defined by domain knowledge\, an energy-based deep inverse reinforcement learning method is developed to learn the traversability from demonstrations. The proposed method considers robot proprioception and can learn reward maps that lead to more energy-efficient future trajectories. Experiments are conducted using a dataset collected by a Mini-Cheetah robot in different environments.

DESCRIPTION:Recent years have witnessed enormous progress toward the development of quantum computers---novel devices that exploit quantum mechanics to perform tasks far beyond the reach of the world’s best supercomputers. Qubits based on semiconductor spins are particularly promising because of their long coherence times and prospects for scaling up to large processors by leveraging the existing semiconductor electronics infrastructure. However\, many fundamental challenges related to decoherence\, controllability\, and device architecture remain. I will describe our efforts to address these challenges on multiple fronts using smart control schemes\, bath-state engineering with Floquet physics\, and entanglement generation between remote spins.\n\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MIDAS Seminar Series\, ECE\, Astronomy \, and Women in Computing Co-Present: Katie Bouman\, California Institute of Technology
DESCRIPTION:As imaging requirements become more demanding\, we must rely on increasingly sparse and/or noisy measurements that fail to paint a complete picture. Computational imaging pipelines\, which replace optics with computation\, have enabled image formation in situations that are impossible for conventional optical imaging. For instance\, the first black hole image\, published in 2019\, was only made possible through the development of computational imaging pipelines that worked alongside an Earth-sized distributed telescope. However\, remaining scientific questions motivate us to improve this computational telescope to see black hole phenomena still invisible to us and to meaningfully interpret the collected data. This talk will discuss how we are leveraging and building upon recent advances in machine learning in order to achieve more efficient uncertainty quantification of reconstructed images as well as to develop techniques that allow us to extract the evolving structure of our own Milky Way's black hole over the course of a night.\n\nKatherine L. (Katie) Bouman is a Rosenberg Scholar and an assistant professor in the Computing and Mathematical Sciences\, Electrical Engineering\, and Astronomy Departments at the California Institute of Technology. Before joining Caltech\, she was a postdoctoral fellow in the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. She received her Ph.D. in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at MIT in EECS\, and her bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CANCELED: Omission as the Modern Form of Bias Against Indigenous People
DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances\, this event has been canceled and will be rescheduled for a later date. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. \n\nIn the U.S. cultural imagination\, Indigenous Peoples loom large in romanticized and stereotyped ways\, yet contemporary Indigenous Peoples are largely omitted from the public conscience. In K-12 education\, for example\, 87% of references to Indigenous Americans portray them in a pre-1900’s context. In mainstream media\, less than .5% of representations are of contemporary Indigenous Peoples. Utilizing both experimental and national survey studies\, I will demonstrate that prevalent representations of Indigenous Peoples (or lack thereof) shape how people think\, feel\, and subsequently act towards Indigenous Peoples\, as well as how Indigenous Peoples feel about themselves and act to make change in society. Specifically\, I will first show that recognizing Indigenous omission shapes discrimination and both implicit and explicit bias towards Indigenous Peoples\, including attitudes about the use of redface\, and apathy towards the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls epidemic. I will then show how sensitivity to Indigenous omission has adverse psychological consequences for Indigenous Peoples’ wellbeing\, but also serves to galvanize efforts to change the status quo through civic engagement. By making visible the pernicious consequences of omission and highlighting Indigenous agency and resistance to omission\, we illuminate a path towards creating a more equitable future for Indigenous Peoples.

DESCRIPTION:Free & Open to the public\nRegistration required: https://myumi.ch/M9w53\n\nUniversity of Michigan Center for World Performance Studies presents the final session in a series of virtual roundtable discussion curated by Scholar-in-Residency Ajay Heble\, exploring the theme of Improvisation & Encounter. Drawing its inspiration in part from *The Fierce Urgency of Now: Improvisation\, Rights\, and the Ethics of Cocreation*\, a collaboratively-authored book by Daniel Fischlin\, George Lipsitz\, and Ajay Heble\, this series of online roundtable conversations will explore improvisation in the arts as a scene of encounter. What happens when artists come together to improvise\, and what might this scene of encounter tell us about the staging and negotiation of difference: between artists\, between artists and audiences\, between the present moment and the varied histories and contexts that gave rise to it?  Moderated by Ajay Heble\, the focus of the final panel is “Intercultural Collaboration\,” and brings together scholar-practitioners from diverse disciplines. \n\nIn an era when diverse peoples and communities of interest struggle to forge historically new forms of affiliation across cultural divides\, the participatory and civic virtues of engagement\, dialogue\, respect\, and community-building inculcated through improvisatory practices take on a particular urgency. Exploring the improvisational encounters enacted through intercultural artistic practices\, the panel will discuss how (and to what extent) such encounters can function as a powerful bridge between artists from very different cultures. To what extent might these encounters offer testing grounds for understanding—and modeling--how people might best learn to get along in a globalized world? What can we learn about trust\, relatedness\, responsibility\, and social obligation from intercultural improvisatory encounters in the arts?\n\nFive-time Juno Award winner\, Jane Bunnett has turned her bands and recordings into showcases for the finest musical talent from Canada\, the US\, and Cuba. An internationally acclaimed musician\, Bunnett is known for her creative integrity\, improvisational daring\, and courageous artistry. Her exploration of Afro-Cuban melodies expresses the universality of music\, and her ability to embrace and showcase the rhythms and culture of Cuba has been ground-breaking. She has toured the world bringing her own special sound to numerous jazz festivals\, displaying her versatility as a flutist\, saxophone player\, and pianist.\n\nOmi Osun Joni L. Jones’ work is committed to exploring strategies for promoting healthy communities through personal Joy. She is an artist/scholar/facilitator who employs Black Feminist aesthetics in her performance work\, her pedagogy\, and her consulting. She has performed at The New Black Fest (NYC)\, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco)\, and Links Hall (Chicago). Her scholarship has appeared in The Drama Review\, Obsidian\, and Theatre Journal as well as solo/black/woman and Blacktino Queer Performance. Her most recent book is *Theatrical Jazz: Performance*\, *Àṣẹ*\, and the *Power for the Present Moment* (Ohio State University Press). She is Professor Emerita from the African and African Diaspora Studies Department at the University of Texas at Austin.\n\nGeorge Lipsitz is Professor of Black Studies and Sociology at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. Along with Daniel Fischlin and Ajay Heble he is co-author of *The Fierce Urgency of Now: Improvisation\, Rights and the Ethics of Co-Creation*. Lipsitz has authored (among other books) *How Racism Takes Place*\, *The Possessive Investment in Whiteness*\, *Time Passages*\, *Dangerous Crossroads*\, *Footsteps in the Dark* and *Midnight at the Barrelhouse*.  \n\nScholar-in-Residence Ajay Heble is Director of the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation and Professor of English in the School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph. He is the author or editor of several books\, and a founding co-editor of the journal Critical Studies in Improvisation/Études critiques en improvisation (www.criticalimprov.com). He was the Project Director for Improvisation\, Community\, and Social Practice\, a large-scale Major Collaborative Research Initiative\, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
