DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: Nov 12\, 2021 - January 22\, 2022\nPublic Opening and Award Ceremony: November 12\, 2021\nOrganized by Stamps Gallery\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative is a new awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. This inaugural program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. \nThe call for work went out to artists across the state in March 2020. In July 2020\, Envision jurors Carla Acevedo-Yates\, Curator\, MCA Chicago\; Ken Aptekar (BFA &#039\;73)\, Artist\; and Loring Randolph (BFA &#039\;04)\, Director\, Frieze New York\; gathered virtually to review the submissions. \nAfter evaluating 259 submissions from across the state\, the jurors selected five finalists to receive a group exhibition at Stamps Gallery. \nOn December 10\, 2021\, one finalist will be named the 2021 Envision Award recipient\, receiving a cash prize. \nThe exhibition will tour to different venues in Michigan\, including the Crooked Tree Art Center in Traverse City. \nEnvision Finalists\nNayda Collazo-Llorens examines the way in which we perceive and process information\, dealing with concepts of navigation\, memory\, language\, hyperconnectivity and noise through her interdisciplinary creative practice. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition
DESCRIPTION:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition features the work of artists in the Linkage Project\, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) that affirms the creativity of adults who have returned from incarceration. The artists previously exhibited their work at PCAP's Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners at the University of Michigan. For some\, this exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Lab is the first opportunity to show their work since regaining their freedom. Art-making has helped these artists during the dark years of their incarceration\, and we hope the exhibition inspires visitors to learn more about how to support formerly incarcerated people reconnecting with their communities.\n\nMartín Vargas\, artist and curator of this exhibition\, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work\, but also during select Art Lab studio hours\, which will feature several of the artists working in person.\n\nConnections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition is organized by the Linkage Project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. The exhibition is curated by Martín Vargas\, Vanessa Mayesky\, Scott Tompkins\, Nico Slowik\, Kimiko Uyeda\, and Jenna VanFleteren.

DESCRIPTION:Blackthorn welcomes you to the rich tapestry of Celtic music.\n\nTraditional songs of emigration\, sea shanties\, lively jigs and reels\, and ancient airs combine with some of Ireland’s best contemporary songs for a musical experience that captures the history and legend of Ireland and its people.\n\nWhat makes a Blackthorn show unique is the variety of tunes\, tempos and textures. Each member of the band plays multiple instruments\, including wooden flute\, accordion\, tin whistle\, five string banjo\, cittern\, bones and more. These instruments complement the lead vocal of Belfast native Richard McMullan and the band’s tight blend of four part harmony.\n\nBlackthorn has played throughout the Great Lakes region since 1984. Based in Detroit\, they can be found regularly at O’Mara’s Pub and Restaurant in Berkley. Other venues include concert halls\, universities and festivals\, including main stage appearances at the prestigious Michigan Irish Festival and world renowned Milwaukee Irish Fest.\n\nMetro Detroiters fondly remember Blackthorn’s annual appearances on J. P. McCarthy’s St. Patrick’s Day show on WJR radio in the 1980s and 1990s\, and later with Paul W. Smith. They have released seven CDs\, and have performed with guest musicians such as members of the Michigan Opera Theater and the Motor City Brass Band. In 2010\, Blackthorn was voted “Best Folk Band/Artist” by the readers of The Detroit Metro Times.\n\nFrom large festival\, to pub\, restaurant or intimate performing arts center\, Blackthorn provides time tested entertainment. Chuck Ward of the Milwaukee Irish Fest says this about the band\, “Blackthorn was very well received at Milwaukee Irish Fest\, they impressed everyone with their strong and well blended songs. They are strong ambassadors in their commitment to continuing the Irish ballad tradition and a crowd pleasing addition to any festival.\"
