DESCRIPTION:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966 brings to light the collection of house catalogs in the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library’s Special Collections. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest\, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes\, such as\, the Michigan house catalog industry\, changing architectural styles\, the business of selling homes\, societal and cultural implications\, and domestic technologies. We hope the exhibit is not simply a nostalgic view back\, but raises awareness of our domestic surroundings today and compels us to ask questions as we look to the future.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Special Seminar: Incorporating geography into statistical methods for population genomics
DESCRIPTION:One of the fundamental goals of evolutionary biology is to quantify patterns of genetic diversity between populations and study the processes that shape them. However\, the development of key statistical methods in population genetics lags behind the generation of datasets that require them for analysis. In particular\, methods for studying population structure\, admixture\, demography\, and selection in continuous space are still lacking\, leading to a gap in our ability to answer basic questions in evolutionary biology. My research is focused on understanding the role of geography in structuring patterns of population genetic variation and on learning about the processes that have shaped these patterns. To further this goal\, I develop and implement novel population genetic models and statistical methods for describing population structure and admixture\, as well as studying local adaptation and natural selection.

SUMMARY:Other:Mechanisms of CRISPR-mediated immunity and applications beyond editing
DESCRIPTION:Bacteria and archaea have evolved sophisticated adaptive immune systems that rely on CRISPR RNA (crRNA)-guided detection and nuclease-mediated elimination of invading nucleic acids. In this presentation\, I will summarize recent bioinformatic\, biochemical\, and structural studies that explain how conserved DNA sequence motifs that flank CRISPR loci recruit a collection of Cas and non-Cas proteins. Collectively\, these proteins kink and twist the host DNA into two consecutive U-shaped structures that specify the location for integration of foreign DNA. Like so many other research projects\, the progress of this work has been delayed by the global pandemic. Unexpectedly\, our fundamental research on CRISPRs led to the development of a creative new CRISPR-based diagnostic for RNA viruses. I will share recent results and ongoing challenges for rapid and sensitive detection of SARS-CoV-2 using a CRISPR-based detection method. \nBlake Wiedenheft (Montana State University)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Xiaowu Dai\, Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, Department of Economics\, University of California\, Berkeley
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: We study the problem of decision-making in the setting of a scarcity of shared resources when the preferences of agents are unknown a priori and must be learned from data. Taking the two-sided matching market as a running example\, we focus on the decentralized setting\, where agents do not share their learned preferences with a central authority. Our approach is based on the representation of preferences in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space\, and a learning algorithm for preferences that accounts for uncertainty due to the competition among the agents in the market. Under regularity conditions\, we show that our estimator of preferences converges at a minimax optimal rate. Given this result\, we derive optimal strategies that maximize agents' expected payoffs and we calibrate the uncertain state by taking opportunity costs into account. We also derive an incentive-compatibility property and show that the outcome from the learned strategies has a stability property. Finally\, we prove a fairness property that asserts that there exists no justified envy according to the learned strategies. \n\nThis is a joint work with Michael I. Jordan.\n\nhttps://www.xiaowudai.org/
