SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beautiful By Night
DESCRIPTION:Artist James Hosking lived in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood from 2010 to 2018\, during which time he developed the *Beautiful By Night* photo series and documentary film. The work is about the veteran drag performers at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge\, a small bar that has had an outsized influence on San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community for more than twenty years. Sadly\, it is now the last gay bar in the area. The project captures the performers Donna Personna\, Olivia Hart\, and Collette LeGrande as they transform at home\, backstage\, and onstage. It is a candid exploration of aging\, identity\, and labor.\n\nSpecial Evening Viewing with James Hosking in Conversation with Curator Amanda Krugliak with pop-up performances by *Beautiful By Night *protagonists Olivia Hart and Donna Personna Thursday\, January 13\, 6:45pm-8pm.\n\nFor complete details\, visit https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/gallery/current-exhibitions/james-hosking.html.

DESCRIPTION:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966 brings to light the collection of house catalogs in the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library’s Special Collections. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest\, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes\, such as\, the Michigan house catalog industry\, changing architectural styles\, the business of selling homes\, societal and cultural implications\, and domestic technologies. We hope the exhibit is not simply a nostalgic view back\, but raises awareness of our domestic surroundings today and compels us to ask questions as we look to the future.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Too Young to Run? Voter Evaluations of the Age of Candidates
DESCRIPTION:Please note: Due to updated guidance from the University in regards to the Covid Policy\, this lecture will be only in a webinar format . Please register here to attend: https://myumi.ch/d99yG\n\nIn Japan\, as in most countries\, elected officials tend to be older than most of the constituents they represent. Is this because voters generally prefer older politicians to younger ones? In this study\, we manipulate the photos of hypothetical candidates via age regression and progression software in a survey experiment to examine age biases and stereotypes among Japanese voters.\n \n Charles McClean is the Toyota Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan’s Center for Japanese Studies. His research focuses on the politics of age and aging\, political institutions\, social welfare\, representation\, and local politics. Previously\, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Program on U.S.-Japan Relations at Harvard University. He received a Ph.D. in Political Science from UC San Diego\, an M.A. in Regional Studies: East Asia from Harvard University\, and a B.A. in International Relations and Japanese from Tufts University.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public\, but registration is required if you intend to participate virtually. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email. Webinar registration link to be announced. The Center for Japanese Studies will follow state\, local\, and University of Michigan guidelines for in-person events.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Broadband Internet Access: Implications for the Health of People with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Webinar Description:\nBroadband internet access plays a critical role in modern society\, facilitating long-distance communication\, access to information\, and health care interventions\, as well as multiple opportunities for social participation. Internet access is increasingly necessary for work\, filing for unemployment benefits\, and receiving health care through telemedicine\, making it a key component of the social determinants of health. It is estimated that one in four Americans does not have internet access or the computing devices needed to engage in these activities. Yet little is known about the impact of broadband internet access for the health of people with disabilities. This webinar will present new research findings and discuss current policy implications related to broadband internet for the health of adults with disability.\n\nThis webinar is free and open to the public. Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) services will be available to provide live closed captions.\n\nThe content of this webinar has been developed under a grant from the National Institute on Disability\, Independent Living\, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR #90RTHF0001). NIDILRR is a Center within the Administration for Community Living (ACL)\, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The content of this webinar does not necessarily represent the policy of NIDILRR\, ACL\, or HHS and you should not assume endorsement by the Federal Government.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: Supporting DEI Efforts in Engineering Education
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Karen Thomas-Brown\nAssociate Dean\nOffice of Diversity\, Equity & Inclusion\nCollege of Engineering\nUniversity of Washington\n\nThe body of knowledge in STEM education pays scant attention to the gendered nature of women's educational experiences\, empirical evidence on faculty diversity initiatives\, and the extent to which minoritized scientists\, mainly black scientists\, are funded. Even less attention is given to practical support for faculty diversity and the insidious barriers to funding for URM graduate students\, faculty\, and researchers through grants and scholarships. Additionally\, there is professional isolation\, the uncommon service load\, and other expectations not addressed\, while female and nonbinary constituents have their belonging repeatedly questioned. The systemic barriers entrenched in the rhetoric of “this is how we have always done it” that your URM grapple with daily in STEM education on a plethora of scales and at various levels of engagement foreshadows the need for non-performative work in this space. These are just a few scenarios that show the need for targeted\, evidence-based DEI efforts in Colleges of Engineering. Our work in the Office of Inclusive Excellence focuses on systemic barriers and the solutions for dismantling these. The work uses a mission-driven\, strategically focused approach that prioritizes inclusive infrastructure\, data-driven equity-mindedness\, and organizational change to diversify\, establish\, and sustain inclusive policies and practices\, and changes the culture. \n\nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Karen Thomas-Brown leads the University of Washington’s (UW) College of Engineering ongoing efforts to be an accessible\, welcoming and inclusive community. She develops best practices and guidelines that strengthen the College’s goals around diversity\, equity and inclusion\, and collaborates with College and campus leaders to develop and implement programs that increase the participation and engagement of diverse and underrepresented groups across the College. Dr. Thomas-Brown joined the UW from the University of Michigan-Dearborn (UM-D) where she was a professor in the College of Education\, Health and Humans Services with research and teaching in the Department of Education and the Department of Social Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. and Bachelor's degree in geography specializing in social and urban structures focusing on the sociological variables that shape human systems\; and professional certificates in Executive Leadership\, Performance Leadership\, Change Management\, and Diversity and Inclusion (DEI) from Cornell University.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A Truly Subject-Specific\, Shared Model of the Human Tricuspid Valve
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Computer simulations have become critical elements of the medical device design and regulatory approval process. Naturally\, the predictability and therefore value of such simulations depends highly on their accuracy. Especially for the design of heart valve replacements and repair technologies computer simulations have become a critical tool. While much progress has been made in modeling the aortic valve and the mitral valve\, much less effort has been spent on modeling the tricuspid valve. The reasons are multi-fold\, but include the general neglect of the valve as well as the high complexity of the valve in comparison to the three other valves. In our most recent work\, we are beginning to fulfill this gap. Specifically\, our objective is to develop\, validate\, and then publicly provide a truly subject-specific\, shared model of the human tricuspid valve. To this end\, we combine multi imaging-modality based measurements in beating human hearts that have been prepared in an organ preservation system\, with in-vitro measurements of heart valve geometric\, structural\, and mechanical properties. Once built\, we conduct finite element simulations with this valve and validate dynamic simulations throughout the cardiac cycle against in-situ measurements. Finally\, we show case our model by first mimicking a diseased valve\, which we then repair using a surgical and an interventional approach. \n\nBio: Dr. Rausch is an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin where he directs the soft tissue biomechanics laboratory. His laboratory's objective is to use complimentary imaging modalities\, mechanical testing\, and numerical methods to understand and predict soft tissue disease. The specific problems he studies include pressure ulcers\, right heart heart failure\, tricuspid valve regurgitation\, and thrombotic disease. Check out his work on www.manuelrausch.com and follow him on Twitter under @ManuelKRausch1.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC/CM Seminar | Higher Magic Angles in Twisted Bilayer Graphene and Topological Twistronics
DESCRIPTION:We present recent analytical and numerical results on the chiral model of twisted bilayer graphene and introduce a new platform for twistronic devices on the surface of a topological insulator. In the first part of the talk\, we study the flat band wavefunctions of chiral twisted bilayer graphene at higher magic angles. We show that at higher magic angles\, the wavefunctions exhibit an increasing number of zeros\, resembling quantum Hall wavefunctions at higher Landau levels. Zeros of the same chirality cluster near the center of the moire unit cell\, causing an enhanced phase winding and circulating current. The wavefunctions at higher magic angles have signatures in scanning tunneling microscopy and orbital magnetization experiments. In the second half of the talk\, we investigate the fate of the surface Dirac cone of a three-dimensional topological insulator subject to a superlattice potential. Using a combination of diagrammatic perturbation theory\, lattice model simulations\, and ab initio calculations\, we report a dramatic renormalization of the surface Dirac cone velocity and the formation of gapless satellite Dirac cones. The latter can produce very flat bands that may be a fruitful place to searching for interaction-driven physics.\n\n

SUMMARY:Other:Next Gen Metabolomics Technologies: Broader Coverage\, Single Cell\, Double\nBond Pinpointing\, and Spatial Mapping
DESCRIPTION:The highly dynamic nature of metabolites and their abundances makes metabolomics a\npowerful endpoint of the ‘omics’ cascade\, yielding a molecular profile that is closest to the\nphysiological phenotype. Metabolomic profiles are therefore sensitive to subtle perturbations\nobserved in early disease stages or disease progression\, which may be difficult to detect at the\nproteome or transcriptome levels. Human diseases are multi-factorial in nature\, and studying\nsmall parts of their associated molecular changes is generally insufficient for understanding the\nfull spectrum of disease phenotypes.\nThe metabolome is the total collection of biologically-active small molecules with molecular\nweights lower than about ~1.5 kDa in an organism. This includes endogenous molecules that\nare biosynthesized by metabolic networks in “primary metabolism”\, specialized “secondary\nmetabolite” signaling or defense molecules\, molecules derived from diet or environmental\nexposures (the exposome)\, and molecules derived from the biosynthetic interactions with\nassociated microbes (the microbiome). Metabolomics can either be “targeted” to a set of known\ncompounds\, for example certain lipids\, or “non-targeted”\, which attempts to detect and relatively\nquantify as many metabolites as possible.\nThe vast chemical diversity of the metabolome (lipids\, sugars\, amino acids\, etc.)\, and its\nwide dynamic range (mM to fM) implies that no single analytical method can adequately profile\nall metabolites in one metabolomics experiment. Along these lines\, the “fusion” of mass\nspectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) is emerging as one of\nthe most powerful avenues to increase metabolome coverage. Nested separations that work in\na time frame compatible with mass spectrometry\, such as those performed by ion mobility\, are\nalso playing a key analytical role in metabolomics as a way of increasing peak capacity\, and\nidentifying metabolites through ion mobility collision cross section measurements. Further\,\nlocalization of metabolites at the tissue level with imaging mass spectrometry experiments\,\nallows linking their abundance with changes observed in biofluids. In this seminar\, I will\nintroduce the typical workflow used in non-targeted metabolomics experiments\, describe\npotential pitfalls through examples related to our efforts within the Molecular Transducers of\nPhysical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC)\, and showcase the challenges involved in identifying\nunknowns with this growing ‘omics approach.\n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/94087632693?pwd=bW5qMFQ0ZmRHTEdZZTNVUkt2Mmk1UT09\nPasscode Fernandez\n\n\n\nFacundo Fernandez (Georgia Institute of Technology)

SUMMARY:Performance:Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series and the Institute for the Humanities present: Legendary Drag Queens: Gigi’s Meets Aunt Charlie’s: A Tale of Drag Scenes & Queens
DESCRIPTION:.\n \nThis program presents a rare coming together of six legendary Drag Queens from two notoriously fabulous nightclubs in the gritty epicenters of Detroit and San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. \n \nInspired by artist James Hosking’s project Beautiful by Night\, on view at Institute for the Humanities Gallery\, following three San Francisco Drag Artists over the course of one night at Aunt Charlie’s\, the last gay bar in the famed San Francisco Tenderloin district\, an area in the process of being completely re-defined by gentrification and the dot-com takeover.\n \nThis series event brings the San Francisco Aunt Charlie’s Queens together with Detroit’s own reigning Queens from Gigi’s Cabaret\, home of the longest running drag pageant in the United States. Appearing from Detroit are Maxi Chanel (House of Chanel)\, Nickki Stevens\, and Lady T Tempest. Hailing from San Francisco are Olivia Hart and Donna Personna. The six artists come together to discuss the history of their legacies and artform\, the role of lineage and queer community building\, and how drag has changed the world through activism\, glamour\, and celebratory inclusion.\n \nThe evening will be hosted by Ben Johnson\, currently the Director of Performing Arts for the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs\, whose position tasks him with developing programs of cultural exchange among other things. Previously he was the Director of Education and Audience Development at the University Musical Society at the University of Michigan (1996−2008). While in Michigan\, he was steeped in Detroit’s history and lore\, and it is through this lens which he centers drag heritage and history as an important and unique cultural contribution to the vitality of Michigan performing arts history\, aligning it with the equally important and vital history of Aunt Charlies\, the last remaining stronghold of queer and trans-centered cultural space in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district.\n \nCo-presented by the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities\, this program celebrates the exhibition opening of photographer and filmmaker James Hosking’s multimedia project\, Beautiful by Night\, an examination of class\, labor\, and identity among aging drag performers in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood\, featuring the three San Francisco Queens presented here. \n \nJames Hosking supports his subjects by sharing their stories and hopes to work towards ironclad non-discrimination laws protecting employment and housing\, and the more truthful representation of this community in both news and entertainment.\n \nDirectly following the program\, join us for an opening reception at Institute for the Humanities Gallery and meet the artists.\n \nThis event is in-person at the Michigan Theater. Learn more about COVID-19 protocols for Penny Stamps Speaker Series events.\n\nThis program is organized and presented by The Penny W. Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series and the Institute for Humanities\, with support from UMMA in conjunction with the exhibition Oh honey...A queer reading of UMMA's collection (on view through February 20\, 2022). \n\nLead support for the exhibition Oh honey... is provided by Alan Hergott and Curt Shepard and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n\nMedia Sponsor: Between The Lines/Pridesource

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:\"Beautiful By Night\" Special Evening Viewing with James Hosking in Conversation with Curator Amanda Krugliak
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Special Evening Viewing with James Hosking in Conversation with Curator Amanda Krugliak.\n\nAbout the exhibition: Artist James Hosking lived in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood from 2010 to 2018\, during which time he developed the *Beautiful By Night *photo series and documentary film. It is a candid exploration of aging\, identity\, and labor.\n\nComplete details at https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/gallery/current-exhibitions/james-hosking.html.
