SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beautiful By Night
DESCRIPTION:Artist James Hosking lived in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood from 2010 to 2018\, during which time he developed the *Beautiful By Night* photo series and documentary film. The work is about the veteran drag performers at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge\, a small bar that has had an outsized influence on San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community for more than twenty years. Sadly\, it is now the last gay bar in the area. The project captures the performers Donna Personna\, Olivia Hart\, and Collette LeGrande as they transform at home\, backstage\, and onstage. It is a candid exploration of aging\, identity\, and labor.\n\nSpecial Evening Viewing with James Hosking in Conversation with Curator Amanda Krugliak with pop-up performances by *Beautiful By Night *protagonists Olivia Hart and Donna Personna Thursday\, January 13\, 6:45pm-8pm.\n\nFor complete details\, visit https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/gallery/current-exhibitions/james-hosking.html.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Creating Inclusive Environments for Diverse Religious\, Spiritual\, and Secular Worldviews
DESCRIPTION:When you hear the word “diversity”\, what comes to mind? If you’re like most people\, religion wasn’t the first thought or even the second one at that. We live in a world\, work jobs\, attend classes\, and are a part of organizations that are religiously diverse. And yet\, this identity is often forgotten or labeled as too taboo to talk about with others. In order to be effective leaders\, influencers\, and DEI practitioners\, we have to critically examine how we are cultivating communities that both value and engage diverse religious\, spiritual\, and secular (RSS) worldviews. Join us for this interactive workshop as we explore how RSS worldviews shape our experiences and the spaces that we occupy.\nLearning Objectives:\n\nExamine one’s own religious\, spiritual\, secular (RSS) worldview\nExplore how RSS worldviews have shaped one’s own and other’s experiences\nBrainstorm strategies to engage diverse RSS worldviews to cultivate inclusive communities\n\nThis workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact RackhamEvents@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/gNN5Q.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Colin Fogarty\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Operations Research and Statistics\, Sloan School of Management\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Competing approaches to inference in randomized experiments differ primarily in (1) which notion of ``no treatment effect’’ being tested\; and (2) whether or not a superpopulation model is posited for the potential outcomes. Recommended hypothesis tests in a given paradigm may be invalid even asymptotically when applied in other frameworks\, creating the risk of misinterpretation by practitioners when a given method is deployed. For a large class of test statistics common in practice\, we develop a general framework for ensuring validity across competing modes of inference. To do this\, we employ permutation tests based upon prepivoted test statistics\, wherein a test statistic is first transformed by a suitably constructed cumulative distribution function and its permutation distribution is then enumerated. In essence\, the approach uses the permutation distribution of a p-value for a large-sample test known to be valid under the null hypothesis of no average treatment effect as a reference distribution. The framework readily accommodates regression-adjusted estimators of average treatment effects\, and the corresponding tests are never less powerful asymptotically than a test based upon the unadjusted estimator and maintain asymptotic validity even if the regression model is misspecified. The tests retain finite-sample exactness under stricter definitions of no treatment effect such as Fisher’s sharp null by virtue of being permutation tests\, and validity across different superpopulation models can be ensured through the choice of the estimated CDF used when prepivoting. \n\nhttp://www.mit.edu/~cfogarty/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: Nov 12\, 2021 - January 22\, 2022\nPublic Opening and Award Ceremony: November 12\, 2021\nOrganized by Stamps Gallery\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative is a new awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. This inaugural program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. \nThe call for work went out to artists across the state in March 2020. In July 2020\, Envision jurors Carla Acevedo-Yates\, Curator\, MCA Chicago\; Ken Aptekar (BFA &#039\;73)\, Artist\; and Loring Randolph (BFA &#039\;04)\, Director\, Frieze New York\; gathered virtually to review the submissions. \nAfter evaluating 259 submissions from across the state\, the jurors selected five finalists to receive a group exhibition at Stamps Gallery. \nOn December 10\, 2021\, one finalist will be named the 2021 Envision Award recipient\, receiving a cash prize. \nThe exhibition will tour to different venues in Michigan\, including the Crooked Tree Art Center in Traverse City. \nEnvision Finalists\nNayda Collazo-Llorens examines the way in which we perceive and process information\, dealing with concepts of navigation\, memory\, language\, hyperconnectivity and noise through her interdisciplinary creative practice. Learn more: naydacollazollorens.com\nThrough oil painting\, Michael Dixon explores the personal\, societal\, and aesthetic struggles of belonging to both \"white\" and \"black\" racial and cultural identities\, yet simultaneously belonging fully to neither. Learn more: michaeldixonart.com\nCarole Harris is a fiber artist who extends the boundaries of traditional quilting by exploring other forms of stitchery\, irregular shapes\, textiles\, materials\, and objects. Learn more: charris-design.com\nKylie Lockwood is an interdisciplinary artist whose work reconciles the experience of living in a female body with the history of sculpture. Learn more: kylielockwood.com\nDarryl Terrell explores the displacement of black and brown people\, femme identity\, and strength\, the black family structure\, sexuality\, gender\, safe spaces\, and personal stories through photography and digital art. Learn more: darryldterrell.com\nThis program is supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA).\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biophysics in industry: Real-time measurement and manipulation of single-molecule interactions: from DNA-binding proteins to biomolecular condensates
DESCRIPTION:Biological processes emerge from mechanisms at the molecular scale. While biophysical techniques (e.g.\, X-ray crystallography\, cryoEM) with bulk biochemical assays (e.g.\, enzymatic reactions\, fluorescent reporters) have helped to better understand emergent structure-function relationships\, the complete picture of molecular-scale mechanisms is often missed. In addition\, the existing techniques often do not provide tools to observe and manipulate a biological system simultaneously and understand mechanisms from the molecular to the cellular level. In this talk\, I will introduce a single-molecule tool\, the C-Trap\, which enables users to observe and manipulate biological systems in real-time. This technology combines two Nobel prize-winning ideas (optical tweezers and super-resolution STED microscopy)\, integrated with easy-to-use microfluidics\, that allows users to perform single-molecule studies on a broad range of biological systems. I will present some case studies to highlight the role of C-trap in looking at DNA/RNA-proteins interactions\, proteins/RNA-structure dynamics\, and nucleic acid/protein condensates. The presented case studies and workflows serve as a framework for measuring and visualizing complex and dynamic biological systems\, that would be extremely challenging to study using conventional biophysical techniques.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:When do Multinational Corporations Concede to Nationalistic Activism: A Natural Experiment
DESCRIPTION:We extend the corporate political-mediation model\, which is developed in a domestic context and attributes corporate concessions to social movement activists to contextual pressures\, to the international market in order to explain concessions made by multinational corporations (MNC) to nationalist activists in their host countries. We argue that in the international market\, the pressures that firms face include not only declines in performance but also those that arise from a more complex set of stakeholders. Whereas in a domestic context\, all of a corporation’s stakeholders are embedded within the same cultural\, political\, and social environment and are therefore more likely to have a shared understanding of what is good\, right\, and desirable in society\, in the international context of MNCs\, stakeholders are located in countries with different national values and sometimes even opposing beliefs. Nationalism can be perceived as undermining the right of a nation’s individual members and minority groups. Thus\, a firm is less likely to concede to a host country’s nationalism if it faces pressure from stakeholders located in countries that value equality\, individualism\, democracy\, and diversity. We find support for our theory in a natural experiment on Fortune Global 500 firms that were targeted by Chinese nationalists for violating the “One China” protocol in regional indications.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Schwarze Adler (Black Eagles)
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the extraordinary life and message of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\, it is important to note that his vision of hope and racial equity had ripple effects beyond our nation’ s borders. It is with the intention of adding an international perspective to the discussion of race and race relations that the German department is proud to present a curated screening of Schwarze Adler\; a documentary film in which Black players of the German national soccer team tell their personal stories for the very first time. Their stories of challenges\, successes and failures\, as well as their prognostications on racism and identity in Germany\, reflect the struggles faced by communities of color both within the sporting world and without.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Criteria for discovery and exclusion of new physics and its application to proton decay searches
DESCRIPTION:The projected discovery and exclusion capabilities of particle physics and astrophysics/cosmology experiments are often quantified using the median expected p-value or its corresponding significance. We argue that this criterion leads to flawed results\, which for example can counterintuitively project lessened sensitivities if the experiment takes more data or reduces its background. We advocate for standard use of the “exact Asimov significance” detailed in this talk. We then consider a modified frequentist approach\, which for exclusion case is known as the CLs technique\, for projecting sensitivities\, and contrast it with the standard frequentist approach among others. And\, as an application of some of these techniques\, we study the statistical significance of proton decay at the current and future neutrino detectors. We first review some statistical methods that are employed in various proton decay sensitivity studies\, and along the way we estimate the current lower limit on proton partial lifetimes at various confidence levels based on Super-Kamiokande’s data. We present our projections for proton partial lifetime in p → ν K+ and p → e+ π0 decay channels at DUNE\, JUNO\, and Hyper-Kamiokande.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Genesis and Evolution of the El Laco Iron Oxide-Apatite Deposit in the Chilean Altiplano
DESCRIPTION:The genesis of iron oxide-apatite (IOA) deposits\, which have been historically a major source of iron for our society\, has remained elusive for more than half a century\, with proposed genetic models that span the spectrum from purely igneous to purely hydrothermal processes. Much of this long-standing debate has been centered in the Plio-Pleistocene El Laco deposit in the Chilean Altiplano\, which is the youngest and one of the best preserved example of this mineralization type on Earth. Its massive magnetite orebodies emplaced on the flanks of an andesitic stratovolcano host more than a gigaton of iron and have attracted significant attention because of their uniquely preserved volcanic-like features which bear a striking resemblance to basaltic lava flows. Therefore\, the El Laco deposit is considered as a key location to understand the processes that form IOA systems in volcanic settings.\nIn this talk I will present the results of a comprehensive study that combined fieldwork with a multi-instrumental microanalytical approach for geochemical and microtextural characterization of ore and volcanic rock samples\, which allowed dissecting the El Laco system from its roots to the surface. In particular\, I will show how microtextures and chemical composition of magnetite and associated silicate minerals can help us to better understand the processes involved in the formation and evolution of this enigmatic deposit. The results that will be shown support a genetic model that explains the formation of the El Laco deposit by a combination of magmatic and hydrothermal processes operating during the evolution of a volcanic system.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics MLK Colloquium: \"Talking College: A Community Based Language and Racial Identity Development Model for Black College Student Justice\"
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually for a presentation by Anne H. Charity Hudley\, PhD\, Professor of Education at Stanford University. She will present \"Talking College: A Community Based Language and Racial Identity Development Model for Black College Student Justice.\"\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact lingadmin@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.\n\nABSTRACT\nCritical knowledge about language and culture is an integral part of the quest for educational equity and empowerment\, not only in PreK-12 but also in higher education. As Black students transition from high school to college\, they seek to add their voices and perspectives to academic discourse and to the scholarly community in a way that is both advantageous and authentic. \n\nThe Talking College Project is a Black student and Black studies centered way to learn more about the particular linguistic choices of Black students while empowering them to be proud of their cultural and linguistic heritage. Black students took introductory educational linguistics courses that examined the role of language in the Black college experience and collected information from college students through both interviews and ethnography. We valued the perspectives of undergraduates from a range of disciplinary backgrounds as researchers\, and we had a special focus on how our findings can immediately improve their own educational and linguistic experiences.\n\nOne key question of The Talking College Project was: how does the acquisition of different varieties of Black language and culture overlap with identity development\, particularly intersectional racial identity development? To answer this question\, we used a community-based participatory research methodology to conduct over 100 interviews with Black students at numerous Minority-Serving Institutions\, Historically Black Colleges\, and Predominantly White Universities across the U.S. We also conducted ethnographic research on over 10 college campuses. Based on information collected from the interviews and our ethnographies\, it is evident that Black students often face linguistic bias and may need additional support and guidance as they navigate the linguistic terrain of higher education. In this presentation\, I present themes and examples from the interviews that illustrate the linguistic pathways that students choose\, largely without direct sociolinguistic support that could help guide their decisions. \n\nTo address the greater need to share information about Black language with students\, I highlight our findings from interviews with Black students who have taken courses in educational linguistics to demonstrate the impact of education about Black language and culture on Black students’ academic opportunities and social lives. We have a focus on how this information particularly influenced those who went on to be educators. These findings serve to help us create an equity-based model of assessment for what educational linguistic information Black students need in order to be successful in higher education and how faculty can help to establish opportunities for students to access content about language\, culture\, and education within the college curriculum. I address the work we need to do as educators and linguists to provide more Black college students with information that both empowers them raciolinguistically AND respects their developing identity choices.

DESCRIPTION:*By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.*\n\nThe Sweet Remains consist of three gifted and charismatic singer-songwriters\, each of whom contribute to the writing and the three-part harmonies that define the band's sound. Driven by strong lyrical and melodic writing\, their songs easily appeal to fans of modern folk-rockers like Jason Mraz\, Ray Lamontagne\, and John Mayer. However\, it is their lush harmonies\, that distinguish The Sweet Remains from the throngs of guitar-toting troubadour\, harking back to supergroups of the 60's and 70's like CSN\, the Eagles\, and Simon & Garfunkel. When Rich Price\, Greg Naughto\, and Brian Chartrand met for a chance jam session in a Rhode Island hotel room in 2008\, the three instantly recognized a musical blend and kinship that would eventually overcome geography (and solo careers) to form The Sweet Remains. Since then they've toured as far away as Denmark and Germany\, and gained critical raves from the likes of the Boston Herald\, which wrote that \"it's been a long time since three-part harmonies this lush were yoked to songs this melodically gorgeous.\" Come and luxuriate in the sounds of the harmony trio of the year!
