SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beautiful By Night
DESCRIPTION:Artist James Hosking lived in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood from 2010 to 2018\, during which time he developed the *Beautiful By Night* photo series and documentary film. The work is about the veteran drag performers at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge\, a small bar that has had an outsized influence on San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community for more than twenty years. Sadly\, it is now the last gay bar in the area. The project captures the performers Donna Personna\, Olivia Hart\, and Collette LeGrande as they transform at home\, backstage\, and onstage. It is a candid exploration of aging\, identity\, and labor.\n\nSpecial Evening Viewing with James Hosking in Conversation with Curator Amanda Krugliak with pop-up performances by *Beautiful By Night *protagonists Olivia Hart and Donna Personna Thursday\, January 13\, 6:45pm-8pm.\n\nFor complete details\, visit https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/gallery/current-exhibitions/james-hosking.html.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966
DESCRIPTION:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966 brings to light the collection of house catalogs in the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library’s Special Collections. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest\, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes\, such as\, the Michigan house catalog industry\, changing architectural styles\, the business of selling homes\, societal and cultural implications\, and domestic technologies. We hope the exhibit is not simply a nostalgic view back\, but raises awareness of our domestic surroundings today and compels us to ask questions as we look to the future.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Navigating at the Intersection of Two Pandemics: Exploring Black Engineering Graduate Students’ Simultaneous Experiences of COVID-19 and Racism-20
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar\, the presenter will share findings from an in-progress work and facilitate a conversation anchored in the experiences of Black graduate students in engineering (BGSE) at the intersections of two pandemics. This engaging conversation will support our awareness of how the experiences of BGSE as a marginalized group in engineering have been compounded by the simultaneous realities of COVID-19 and Racism-20 (systemic racism). Specifically\, the duality of BGSE as Black people in America and Black graduate students in U.S. engineering programs creates a unique set of experiences about which little is known. This seminar will amplify the experiences of BGSE in this moment and their explicit needs with the goal of increasing institutional awareness\, and thus accountability\, for best supporting their persistence and success.\n\nBrooke C. Coley\, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in Engineering at the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University. She is also Principal Investigator of the Shifting Perceptions\, Attitudes and Cultures in Engineering (SPACE) Lab\, which aspires to elevate the experiences of marginalized populations\, dismantle systemic injustices\, and transform the way inclusion is cultivated in engineering through the implementation of novel technologies and methodologies in engineering education. Her active NSF-supported research focuses on three specific areas: the role of identity-related professional organizations in engineering student success\, factors impacting trajectory decisions of engineering students from underrepresented groups at community colleges and creating pathways to engineering education research. Dr. Coley recently received the 2021 Diversity and Inclusion Award from the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering for her commitment to creating and fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. She holds a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Social Brown Bag: What is Consent? Law vs. Moral Psychology
DESCRIPTION:Consent plays a pivotal role in many everyday moral judgments\, yet little is known about public perception of consent. In this research\, I examine people’s moral intuitions about whether consent has been granted under circumstances involving compromised autonomy. Results indicate that people largely regard cases involving deception as consensual\, while they largely regard cases involving coercion or incapacitation as nonconsensual. I further show that people assign moral weight to consent obtained by deception: they view such consent as legitimating or justifying otherwise impermissible behavior. The \"folk conception\" of consent contradicts most prevailing philosophical and legal accounts of consent\, which treat deception as consent-defeating. The lay theory\, however\, aligns with one highly controversial legal doctrine: the distinction between “fraud in the factum” and “fraud in the inducement.” While this common-law doctrine has been roundly criticized\, it finds support in our intuitive moral psychology. Please note that this talk will discuss nonconsensual sex.

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Data Sharing: A Strategy for Housing and Workforce Systems Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Employment success and housing stability go hand in hand. Although the public workforce and homeless service systems both serve homeless and unstably housed jobseekers\, these systems work in silos in many communities. Collaboration is critical for these two systems to achieve their interrelated goals.\n\nHeartland Alliance’s webinar series\, Strategies for Workforce and Housing Systems Collaboration\, shines a light on strategies communities can use to bridge the gap between systems and ensure equitable pathways to employment and income needed for housing stability.\n\nOne promising systems collaboration strategy is cross-system data sharing. Our second webinar of the series\, Data Sharing: A Strategy for Housing and Workforce Systems Collaboration\, will provide an overview of data sharing\, how Chicago and Detroit have operationalized this strategy\, and how it can be used to better understand and meet the needs of workforce and homeless service populations in your community.\n\nData sharing allows systems to gain important information such as how many people make up their shared service population\, what kinds of services these individuals want\, need\, and receive from each system\, and where there may be untapped opportunities for partnerships or gaps that could best be addressed collaboratively. The webinar will feature on-the-ground perspectives of systems leaders from Chicago and Detroit who have implemented data-sharing strategies across systems in their communities.\n\nPANELISTS:\n- Scott Jackson\, CAM System Coordinator at Southwest Solutions\n- Jennifer Erb-Downward\, Senior Research Associate at Poverty Solutions at University of Michigan\n- Kevin Naud\, Workforce Strategy Analyst at Detroit at Work\n- Nancy Phillips\, Chief Program Officer at Inspiration Corporation and a co-chair of the Employment Task Force at AllChicago\n- Dena Al-Khatib\, Career Connect Administrator at Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership\n- Lisa Bly-Jones\, CEO of Chicago Jobs Council
