SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beautiful By Night
DESCRIPTION:Artist James Hosking lived in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood from 2010 to 2018\, during which time he developed the *Beautiful By Night* photo series and documentary film. The work is about the veteran drag performers at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge\, a small bar that has had an outsized influence on San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community for more than twenty years. Sadly\, it is now the last gay bar in the area. The project captures the performers Donna Personna\, Olivia Hart\, and Collette LeGrande as they transform at home\, backstage\, and onstage. It is a candid exploration of aging\, identity\, and labor.\n\nSpecial Evening Viewing with James Hosking in Conversation with Curator Amanda Krugliak with pop-up performances by *Beautiful By Night *protagonists Olivia Hart and Donna Personna Thursday\, January 13\, 6:45pm-8pm.\n\nFor complete details\, visit https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/gallery/current-exhibitions/james-hosking.html.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966
DESCRIPTION:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966 brings to light the collection of house catalogs in the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library’s Special Collections. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest\, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes\, such as\, the Michigan house catalog industry\, changing architectural styles\, the business of selling homes\, societal and cultural implications\, and domestic technologies. We hope the exhibit is not simply a nostalgic view back\, but raises awareness of our domestic surroundings today and compels us to ask questions as we look to the future.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:MORE FACULTY Session: Getting Your Mentoring Relationship Off to a Good Start
DESCRIPTION:This workshop helps enhance the mentoring relationship between the student and faculty mentor by facilitating the development of shared expectations. Mentors and mentees work independently in separate sessions to identify their own objectives and styles\, and to consider strategies for dealing with possible challenges. Then\, student-faculty pairs work together to develop a written mentoring plan as a means of codifying some of the most important elements (needs\, goals\, mutual expectations) of a two-way mentoring relationship. Over 85 percent of Rackham doctoral students who have written mentoring plans report those plans to be useful.\nFaculty who have attended a MORE workshop in the past should feel free to join the workshop only for the student-faculty work together (the last hour of the workshop). Registration is still required of both the faculty and the student.\nOptional additional time for developing a mentoring plan is available from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.\nFaculty registration is required at https://myumi.ch/bRZkX.\nSeparate registration for students is available at https://myumi.ch/XV2A3.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | The Blue Maps of China
DESCRIPTION:In the first decades of the nineteenth century\, large-format woodblock-printed terrestrial and celestial maps were produced in bright blue in China. These visually striking maps in addition to their physical scale are unique in the history of not only East Asian but world map making traditions. This presentation introduces these blue maps\, historicizing them from the late Ming through Qing dynasties and considers numerous aspects of their production especially in light of recent analysis performed at the University of Michigan Museum of Art Conservation Center and the Weissman Preservation Center\, Harvard University.\n\nPlease register in advance for this Zoom seminar here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_zxRRberdR4e6f18TAkEifQ\n \n Richard A. Pegg is currently Director and Curator of Asian Art for the MacLean Collection\, an Asian art museum and separate map library located north of Chicago\, Illinois. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DS 101: Managing and Planning Your Data
DESCRIPTION:Digital Scholarship 101: Workshop Series\nThis series of workshops helps scholars avoid outdated projects\, unpreserved knowledge\, uncredited labor\, and privacy or consent issues by emphasizing process in the project life cycle. Workshop participants learn how to conceptualize the life cycle of a project using human-centered design and backwards modelling when planning their projects to better understand how to version\, archive\, and preserve their research projects. Throughout the series\, thematic questions around sustainability\, preservation\, accessibility\, privacy\, consent\, grant requirements\, and teaching with research will be examined. We encourage you to come with a project in mind and bring materials if available\, but is not required to attend.\n\nIntended audience: This workshop was developed for humanities graduate students and faculty members who are new to digital scholarship\, but is open to everyone to attend.\n\nDigital Scholarship 101: Managing and Planning for Your Data\nData\, what is it\, how and why is it managed\, and why do granting agencies care? In this workshop we will talk about what counts as “data” from various definitions\, including the National Endowment for the Humanities. Participants will go over the ethical concerns and considerations covered and answered by a data management plan\, as well as the practical skills needed in developing and writing a data management plan. This workshop will cover topics such as collection and storage\, consent agreements\, and contingencies for sensitive information and data. At the end of the workshop\, participants will understand how data management plans can help protect and archive their research\, help with the IRB process\, and contribute significantly to the sustainability of their project.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Positive Links Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, January 25\, 2022 \n1:00-2:00 p.m. ET \nFree\, registration required to obtain login information: https://positiveorgs.bus.umich.edu/events/ethical-learning-and-character-development/\n\nPositive Links: \n\nThe Positive Links Speaker Series\, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations\, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics\, students\, staff\, and leaders. \n\nAbout the talk: \n\nIndividuals’ experiences at work can provide the opportunity for them to become a better person\, in all aspects of their life. Instead of helping workers make more ethical decisions in the moment\, organizations can and should create environments that help them become more ethical people in the long run. \n\nIn her talk\, Maryam Kouchaki will present a bottom-up approach to ethics\, focusing on what individuals can do for themselves to take ownership over their moral development at work. She will also talk about a top-down approach to helping workers develop moral character at work\, focusing on what organizations can do to create a workplace environment conducive to ethical learning. \n\nTaken together\, these bottom-up and top-down approaches highlight the potential role of the workplace as a moral laboratory that allows individuals to engage in an ongoing process of ethical learning\, to find the opportunities and support they need to learn\, grow\, and further develop their moral character. \n\nAbout Kouchaki: \n\nMaryam Kouchaki is an Associate Professor of Management and Organizations at Kellogg School of Management. She is an organizational psychologist who seeks to understand everyday moral encounters\, particularly at work. Her research is organized around two conceptual themes that involve 1) understanding the dynamic nature of moral decision-making and 2) understanding how individuals psychologically experience everyday moral encounters. Maryam examines these with a particular emphasis on the consequences of these encounters for individuals and groups. Across a series of articles\, she has uncovered novel and often counterintuitive forces that continually create widespread unethicality. Notably\, she offers evidence that everyday moral encounters cannot be fully understood without a thorough consideration of the individual’s psychological experience of them. \n\nShe is the editor-in-chief of journal of Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. Her work has appeared in scholarly publications such as Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences\, Academy of Management Journal\, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology\, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes\, and Psychological Science\, and has been featured in media outlets such as the Harvard Business Review\, New York Times\, Business Week\, Wall Street Journal\, the Huffington Post\, and BBC world radio. Maryam was also named to Poets and Quants 2020 list of Best 40 Under 40 Professors. \n\nHost: \n\nGretchen Spreitzer\, Associate Dean for Engaged Learning and Professional Development\; Keith E. and Valerie J. Alessi Professor of Business Administration\; Professor of Management and Organizations \n\nSeries Sponsors: \n\nThe Center for Positive Organizations thanks Sanger Leadership Center\, Tauber Institute for Global Operations\, Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies\, and Diane (BA ‘73) and Paul (MBA ‘75) Jones for their support of the 2021-22 Positive Links Speaker Series. \n\nSeries Promotional Partners: \n\nAdditionally\, we thank Ann Arbor SPARK and the Managerial and Organizational Cognition (MOC) Division of the Academy of Management for their Positive Links Speaker Series promotional partnerships.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Anti-racist and community-centered research approaches for a more just and equitable society
DESCRIPTION:Recent years’ events — the COVID pandemic\, the murder of George Floyd\, and ongoing and new racial justice movements — have highlighted the need to address long-standing systems of oppression that continue to disadvantage and harm communities of color. The historical legacy and current systems of racism continue to plague and negatively impact the health and wholeness of our society\, and these recent events have spurred increased awareness and commitments across organizations and institutions to adopt anti-racist strategies to dismantle oppressive and unjust systems.\n\nResearch and scholarship is one way that higher education institutions like University of Michigan (U-M) have played critical roles in informing the numerous and complex ways that racism operates in our society. This work has contributed to the development of innovative\, evidence based interventions and actions to reduce and eliminate racism and its impacts — at systemic\, institutional\, and interpersonal levels.\n \nThis session is sponsored by the Anti-Racism Collaborative (ARC)\, a strategic space for engagement around anti-racism research and scholarship\, and part of the provost's anti-racism initiative. The session features the inaugural cohort of the ARC Research and Community Impact Fellows — U-M faculty members who are engaged in cutting-edge research and scholarship on racial inequality and justice and who use a variety of community-centered approaches to affect change in multiple systems and settings.\n\nCommunication Access Realtime Translation (CART) services will be provided.\n\nOpening remarks: Provost Susan M. Collins\nModerator: Tabbye Chavous\n\nPanelists: Melissa Borja (American Culture)\, Charles HF Davis III (Higher Education)\, William Lopez (Health Behavior and Health Education)\, Deborah Rivas-Drake (Psychology and Education)\, and Celeste Watkins-Hayes (Public Policy)

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Art and Religion in the Cyclades
DESCRIPTION:With small picturesque ports\, lively tavernas\, and blue-domed churches clustered alongside white sandy beaches\, the Cyclades are many people’s idyllic vision of Greece. In “Art and Religion in the Cyclades\,” we will join Dr. Chris Adamson\, a classical archaeologist and educator\, as he explores the islands long and rich history through the religious art produced there over the last five millennia. \n\nThe lecture will examine the iconic minimalist figures of prehistoric “Cycladic Culture\,” known to have influenced modern artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore\; we will look more closely at some familiar (and less familiar) masterpieces of Classical Greece produced in the islands\, including Venus de Milo\; and we will navigate the development of Greek Christian art in the islands through to the modern period. \n\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the presentation will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:DSI Book Talk with Anna Watkins Fisher & Kris Cohen
DESCRIPTION:Safety Orange first emerged in the 1950s as a bureaucratic color standard in technical manuals and federal regulations in the United States. Today it is most visible in the contexts of terror\, pandemic\, and environmental alarm systems\; traffic control\; work safety\; and mass incarceration. In recent decades\, the color has become ubiquitous in American public life—a marker of the extreme poles of state oversight and abandonment\, of capitalist excess and dereliction. Its unprecedented saturation encodes the tracking of those bodies\, neighborhoods\, and infrastructures judged as worthy of care—and those deemed dangerous and expendable. This talk takes up Safety Orange as an interpretive key for theorizing the uneven distribution of safety and care in twenty-first-century U.S. public life and for pondering what the color tells us about neoliberalism’s intensifying impact often hiding in plain sight in ordinary and commonplace phenomena.\n\nAnna Watkins Fisher\, author of Safety Orange (Minnesota\, Dec 2021)\, Digital Studies Institute faculty member\, and Associate Professor of American Culture at the University of Michigan\, is a cultural and media theorist whose research spans the fields of digital studies\, performance studies\, visual culture\, environmental humanities\, and critical theory. Her first book\, The Play in the System: The Art of Parasitical Resistance (Duke University Press\, 2020)\, explores what artistic resistance looks like in the 21st century when disruption and dissent can be easily co-opted and commodified. Her essays have appeared in such venues as Journal of Visual Culture\, Social Text\, Discourse\, WSQ (Women's Studies Quarterly)\, MIRAJ\, and TDR/The Drama Review. She is the co-editor with Wendy Hui Kyong Chun of the 2nd edition of New Media\, Old Media: A History and Theory Reader (Routledge\, 2015). She's also a founding member of the digital research collective Precarity Lab\; the collective's manifesto\, Technoprecarious\, was published by Goldsmiths/MIT Press in 2020. She co-leads the Critical Futures Project\, a research collective based at the University of Michigan that explores theoretical approaches for addressing the new urgency of climate change under digital and racial capitalism.\n\nRespondent Kris Cohen is an associate professor of Art History and Humanities at Reed College. He works on the relationship between art\, economy\, and media technologies\, focusing especially on the aesthetics of collective life. His first book\, Never Alone\, Except for Now: Networked Life between Populations and Publics (Duke University Press\, 2017)\, looks at the art of Thomson & Craighead\, Sharon Hayes\, and Felix Gonzalez-Torres\, artists who straddle the border between image culture and network culture\, between a logic of spectacle and a logic of networks. His second book manuscript\, The Human in Bits\, is a study of how and why artists working out a non-representational politics of Blackness have engaged a history of the pixel and the raster of the graphical computer screen or graphic user interface (GUI)\, expanding that history beyond the confines of a liberal\, post-racial politics that sought to recuperate whiteness as a part of a multicultural national social matrix.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Knowing What's at Stake: Epistemology and Criminal Justice Reform
DESCRIPTION:In many criminal trials\, judges are not allowed to inform juries of the sentences that a defendant may face if convicted. This prohibition is commonly justified on the grounds that informing juries about sentencing would “inject irrelevant considerations into the jury’s deliberations as to guilt.” Unfortunately\, this justification is missing something big. In this talk\, I argue that there is an important reason for jurors to know the potential consequences of a conviction—namely\, without this knowledge\, jurors may be unable to grasp the legal standard of proof that they are being asked to apply.\n\nPlease click the link below to join the webinar:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96801983277\nOr One tap mobile : \n US: +13017158592\,\,96801983277# or +13126266799\,\,96801983277# \nOr Telephone:\n Dial(for higher quality\, dial a number based on your current location):\n US: +1 301 715 8592 or +1 312 626 6799 or +1 646 876 9923 or +1 253 215 8782 or +1 346 248 7799 or +1 669 900 6833 \n Canada: +1 647 374 4685 or +1 647 558 0588 or +1 778 907 2071 or +1 204 272 7920 or +1 438 809 7799 or +1 587 328 1099 \nWebinar ID: 968 0198 3277\n International numbers available: https://umich.zoom.us/u/a9Fd4khNZ\n\nOr an H.323/SIP room system:\n H.323: \n 162.255.37.11 (US West)\n 162.255.36.11 (US East)\n 115.114.131.7 (India Mumbai)\n 115.114.115.7 (India Hyderabad)\n 213.19.144.110 (Amsterdam Netherlands)\n 213.244.140.110 (Germany)\n 103.122.166.55 (Australia Sydney)\n 103.122.167.55 (Australia Melbourne)\n 149.137.40.110 (Singapore)\n 64.211.144.160 (Brazil)\n 149.137.68.253 (Mexico)\n 69.174.57.160 (Canada Toronto)\n 65.39.152.160 (Canada Vancouver)\n 207.226.132.110 (Japan Tokyo)\n 149.137.24.110 (Japan Osaka)\n Meeting ID: 968 0198 3277\n SIP: 96801983277@zoomcrc.com

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Koulik Khamaru\, PhD Candidate\, Department of Statistics\, University Of California\, Berkeley
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In recent years\, there has been tremendous progress in the field of reinforcement learning (RL)\, especially on the empirical side. But it is fair to say that there is a considerable gap between theory and practice: many RL methods behave far better than existing worst-case theory would suggest\, and often they work in settings where the current worst-case guarantees are completely prohibitive. In this talk\, we will discuss why worst-case guarantees can severely overestimate the difficulty of reinforcement learning problems in presence of favorable structure. This motivates us to consider an instance-dependent difficulty measure that is responsive to the problem structure. Next\, we discuss how we can construct estimators that adapt to this instance-dependent difficulty. We show that for problems with favorable structures our proposed estimators and associated confidence regions are significantly better than those obtained from the worst-case theory. Finally\, we show that the techniques that we developed for constructing instance-dependent estimators are not specific to RL problems\, and they can be applied to a broad class of other problems. \n\nhttps://www.stat.berkeley.edu/~koulik/

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EVENT CANCELED - Nam Center Colloquium Series | The Origins of Korean Cuisine: Prehistoric Foodways from Foraging to Farming
DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled and we hope to reschedule at a later date.\n\nCo-sponsored by the Department of Anthropology and the Museum of Anthropological Archaeology (UMMAA).\n\nPlease note: This session will be held in-person and virtually EST through Zoom. This webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email.\n \nZoom registration at: https://myumi.ch/Axw7x\n\nResponsiBLU verification is required to attend the lecture in person: https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in\n \n Archaeology can offer a long-term perspective on foodways well before writing was invented. How food is procured and prepared impacts environments and our own cultural identities today\, and this is no difference in prehistoric times. This talk will engage the audience what Dr. Lee and her team have found on food culture of over 8\,000 years in Korea. One of the key questions is how prehistoric communities managed various food resources and constructed sustainable niches over the long term before\, during\, and after farming began. Examples come from diverse landscapes\, including hilly sand dunes on the east coast\, alluvial flats along the Nam River\, coastal inlets of Busan harbor\, and Jeju Island. Food culture flourished well before the recipe was written.\n \n Gyoung-Ah Lee is an archaeologist investigating ancient human-environment interactions and cultural niche construction in prehistoric Asia. Her work deals primarily with the long transition from hunting and gathering to dependence on farming for food\, and has been featured in media outlets ranging from scientific journals to NPR. She and her research team secured various funding from the Korean Studies Promotion Service\, the Henry Luce Foundation\, National Geographic\, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada\, and more. While focused in Asia\, her research spans the globe\, and she has led archaeological projects and participated in excavations in Australia\, Canada\, China\, Indonesia\, Korea\, and Vietnam. Since 2007 she has been based at the University of Oregon\, in Eugene\, as a member of the faculty of Anthropology.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Presentation:WISE Night with Dr. Paulette Vincent-Ruz
DESCRIPTION:WISE\, WISE Residence Program\, and CEDO present Paulette Vincent-Ruz\, Ph.D.\; My Journey to QuantCrit: How the Scientist Met The Fugitive In The Borderlands. \n\nAs a gateway to STEM\, Chemistry Education Research (CER) has a moral imperative to progress toward more equitable student engagement with the sciences. While efforts to reform classrooms are ongoing\, quantitative methods used in research can further propagate the marginalization and minoritization of specific student groups. This leads to the question “Can quantitative methods\, long critiqued for their inability to capture the nuance of everyday oppression\, support and further an equity agenda in CER overall?” Here\, we present advancements in the framework of QuantCrit published across education research. While QuantCrit introduced 5 tenets toward identifying and avoiding oppressive quantitative practices\, few works in CER employ tenants of QuantCrit resulting in “hyperpersitent” gap-gazing and deficit-oriented interpretations of student-level data that continue to marginalize specific student groups\, despite best intentions. One of the barriers to applying QuantCrit is that it is hard to find advice on how to apply the principles empirically and how to make sure these principles are consistent with the researcher’s chosen theoretical framework. To support initiatives in CER seeking to transition to more equitable quantitative methods\, suggestions for applying principles of QuantCrit to CER will be discussed.\n\nOpen to the campus community!\n\nRegister here: https://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/manage/session-detail/53213
