SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beautiful By Night
DESCRIPTION:Artist James Hosking lived in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood from 2010 to 2018\, during which time he developed the *Beautiful By Night* photo series and documentary film. The work is about the veteran drag performers at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge\, a small bar that has had an outsized influence on San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community for more than twenty years. Sadly\, it is now the last gay bar in the area. The project captures the performers Donna Personna\, Olivia Hart\, and Collette LeGrande as they transform at home\, backstage\, and onstage. It is a candid exploration of aging\, identity\, and labor.\n\nSpecial Evening Viewing with James Hosking in Conversation with Curator Amanda Krugliak with pop-up performances by *Beautiful By Night *protagonists Olivia Hart and Donna Personna Thursday\, January 13\, 6:45pm-8pm.\n\nFor complete details\, visit https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/gallery/current-exhibitions/james-hosking.html.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966
DESCRIPTION:Buying Home\, Selling America: the House Catalog\, 1906-1966 brings to light the collection of house catalogs in the Art\, Architecture & Engineering Library’s Special Collections. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest\, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes\, such as\, the Michigan house catalog industry\, changing architectural styles\, the business of selling homes\, societal and cultural implications\, and domestic technologies. We hope the exhibit is not simply a nostalgic view back\, but raises awareness of our domestic surroundings today and compels us to ask questions as we look to the future.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:International Policy Center Aid & Development Series. Planning for development impact: A practical workshop on international development
DESCRIPTION:This is the inaugural workshop of IPC’s new Aid & Development series. At Aid & Development events\, students build practical skills for future international development careers.\n \nThis is an in-person event for current U-M students. Students must attend BOTH sessions in their entirety. This event will not be live streamed.\n\nHow do international development projects design and manage activities that are targeted towards a particular development impact? This two-part workshop will provide students with a hands-on opportunity to develop and apply these crucial design\, planning\, and management skills using a United States foreign aid project in Central America as a case study. The ubiquitous tools of theory of change\, logical frameworks\, and performance management planning will be explored within the context of the US Agency for International Development-funded\, Lifelong Learning Project\, carried out in Guatemala from 2014-2021.\n \nAfter discussing the tools and their applications\, students will work in teams to apply them to the project’s specific international development goals. At the end of each application\, student recommendations will be compared to actual project decisions\, and the class will examine the differences and various factors leading to those differences. To facilitate this process\, students will be asked to complete one short reading (~five pages) in advance of the first workshop day.\n \nBy the end of the workshop\, students will have gained a better understanding of how international development teams connect activities to impact\, while adding marketable development management skills to their professional toolkit.\n \nThis workshop will be led by Amy Beck Harris\, a post-doctoral fellow at the Ford School of Public Policy. Dr. Harris merges both experience as a former foreign aid implementation professional working on USAID and World Bank projects\, and academic expertise in public management\, international development\, foreign aid contracting\, and participatory development. Dr. Harris holds a PhD in Public Policy and Management from the University of Washington.\n \nParticipating students must agree to complete one short reading prior to the workshop. More details will be provided upon registration:\n\nRegistration required:\nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdPM95qqrkxH4ujpUMbe28IFkFJeaL99Hvjsm_oT74ipK3bBA/viewform\n \nThis event is hosted by the Ford International Policy Center and co-sponsored by the Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies (LACS).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:All In The Family: The Effects Of Familial Cues On Attitudes Toward Women’s Rights
DESCRIPTION:Why is gender such an unreliable predictor of support for policies that promote gender equality? Women and men alike are generally raised in households and local contexts where men play an outsized role in shaping norms and wield a disproportionate amount of physical\, economic\, and social power\, influencing the development of attitudes toward gendered policies. Across two national surveys\, we look at the influence of various local institutions on attitudes toward gendered policies and find that family norms play a uniquely important role. In a follow-up survey experiment conducted on a national probability sample of American teenagers\, we show that thinking of a single family member with liberal or conservative attitudes towards gender can shape teenage support for gender-related policies\, particularly among boys. Together our findings highlight the powerful role that a single family member can play in shaping public opinion on gender equality.

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | A Cocktail of Active Ingredients - Benefits and Challenges for Plasma Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nLow-temperature plasmas in or in contact with air produce a variety of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) – some being the same molecules that the human body generates for signaling or antimicrobial effects. Plasma treatment of eukaryotic cells can therefore cause similar effects as an innate immune system oxidative burst. Plasma exposure can mimic an immune response to tissue damage which could initiate a natural healing response. Utilizing plasma-generated RONS for plasma-aided wound healing or plasma oncology is a promising alternative to conventional treatments. Yet\, the mechanisms of action and the delivery of RONS to the target are currently still under investigation. In this talk we will explore the cocktail of active ingredients produced by plasmas\; the generation and transport of the reactive species O and OH from the gas phase through a liquid to a biological sample and investigate the role that the biological sample plays as part of the reaction pathway. Using the model biological sample cysteine\, the results indicate that OH/H2O2-dominated chemistry is similar to that found in redox biology\, whereas modifications caused by O-dominated chemistry differ significantly. Atomic oxygen is unknown in nature whereas OH and H2O2 are well known and produced by organisms. The cocktail of RONS and variety plasma sources make it difficult generalize the impact of plasma on cells. However\, the tunability of plasma and the ability to tailor RONS to desired outcomes provides a promising tool for the healing of wounds and new strategies in cancer treatment.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nKatharina Stapelmann is an assistant professor of nuclear engineering at North Carolina State University. She received her Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Ruhr University Bochum\, Germany\, in 2013\, where she continued as postdoc (2014) and assistant professor of electrical engineering (2015-2017) before she joined NC State in 2017. Stapelmann’s research interests lie in the experimental investigation of generation and transport of reactive species for life science applications\, e.g.\, plasma medicine and plasma agriculture. The focus of her research program is on plasma device development\, plasma diagnostics\, and the interaction of plasmas with biological substrates and systems. Stapelmann is Mercator Fellow (DFG)\, speaker of the board of trustees of the German national center of plasma medicine and serves on the International Advisory Board of the Journal Plasma Processes and Polymers. In 2021 she was identified as “Emerging Leader” by the IOP Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics. \n\nThe seminar will be conducted in person and simulcast via Zoom\; it is free and open to the public. Please check the MIPSE website for additional information and requirements for in-person and remote attendance: https://mipse.umich.edu/seminars_2122.php

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Rackham Minority Serving Institutions Initiative Coffee Chat Series: Developing Partnerships with Hispanic Serving Institutions
DESCRIPTION:With conversations about increasing the compositional diversity of graduate students and faculty at all institutions of higher education\, Minority Serving Institutions are often considered as potential partners. In this session participants will learn about Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) as potential partners. With 569 colleges and universities now eligible for the HSI designation\, there are many things to consider as HSIs are extremely diverse by size\, type\, and location. Gina Ann Garcia will talk about the changing demographics at HSIs and the progress (or lack of progress) towards racial equity and justice within HSIs.\nGina Ann Garcia is an associate professor in the Department of Educational Foundations\, Organizations\, and Policy at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research centers on issues of equity and justice in higher education with an emphasis on understanding how Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) embrace and enact an organizational identity for serving minoritized populations. She also seeks to understand the experiences of administrators\, faculty\, and staff within HSIs and the outcomes and experiences of students attending these institutions. Finally\, her research looks at the ways that race and racism have shaped the experiences of minoritized groups in higher education.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/AwwAw.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

Thurnau Professor of Women's and Gender Studies\; Director\, Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG)\n\nDescription:\nOn December 1\, the Supreme Court heard arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization\, a Mississippi case that would make most abortions illegal after 15 weeks of pregnancy (roughly two months earlier than the 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade). The state explicitly asked the Court to overrule Roe\, which turns 49 on January 22\, 2022. A solid majority of Justices (6-3) are on record opposing abortion rights. IRWG has invited experts to discuss the case\, including implications for the future of abortion access across the states and reproductive rights and justice in the U.S. more broadly. The oral argument recording and transcript are available here: https://www.oyez.org/cases/2021/19-1392\n\nSubmit a question for the panel: https://myumi.ch/QeqRX

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | For the new material's era beyond silicon age: discovering\, understanding\, and manipulating quantum materials.\n
DESCRIPTION:Zoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/94692610056\nAbstract:\nWe are currently living on the edge of the silicon age\, characterized by the rapid growth of the semiconductor industry. Yet\, a new class of materials destined to become as familiar as silicon is underway. These materials are so-called quantum materials. In quantum materials\, quantum effects manifest over a wide range of energy and length scales and give rise to exotic properties such as superconductivity\, non-trivial topology\, and many more. For the last decade\, topological materials have been of great interest in the materials science community. With the steady rise of topological materials\, the community's attention is now shifting to strongly correlated topological materials that host a largely unexplored territory from both a theoretical and experimental perspective. In this colloquium\, recent efforts to discover\, understand\, and manipulate the topological state of matter via strong correlation will be reviewed. First\, I will describe how the spin degree of freedom can manifest a novel quantum state of matter. Second\, the effect of lattice degree of freedom on manipulating quantum materials will be discussed. Finally\, I will also briefly state the exciting future of the field. \n\n

SUMMARY:Performance:University Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:pre-concert lecture 7:15pm\n\nKenneth Kiesler\, conductor\n\nThe University Symphony Orchestra presents the world premiere of Tales: A Folklore Symphony by Carlos Simon\, U-M alumnus\, now Resident Composer of the Kennedy Center. The 25-minute\, four-movement work is the second piece of the project conceived and launched by Music Director Kenneth Kiesler in spring of 2020 which aims to commission a new orchestral work by a Black composer annually for a minimum of ten years. \n\nThe concert opens with Voices Shouting Out\, an affirmative and optimistic work by Nkeiru Okoye. Okoye recalls sitting down to write music in the wake of 9/11\, \"I originally attempted to write Voices Crying Out\, I could not…In the end\, rather than “crying out\,” my official response was Voices Shouting Out in freedom as it were\, through the music. It was a march to acknowledge those fighting on behalf of our safety\, and yet a sparkling celebration of life for those of us who continue living\;.\"\n\nWhen William Dawson earned his master’s degree at the American Conservatory\, he and other Black students were not allowed to come to the stage to receive their degrees. When his Negro Folk Symphony was premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in 1934\, an outburst of applause followed the second movement\, and thunderous applause called him back to the stage for multiple bows\, and it received rave reviews from critics\; a rare event for new music of the day. Dawson revised the Symphony in 1952 after a trip to West Africa. \n\nPROGRAM\nVoices Shouting Out - Nkeiru Okoye\ntales: a folklore symphony - Carlos Simon (world premiere)\nNegro Folk Symphony - William Dawson\n\nattend in person or watch online at https://myumi.ch/HillWatch
