SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beautiful By Night
DESCRIPTION:Artist James Hosking lived in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood from 2010 to 2018\, during which time he developed the *Beautiful By Night* photo series and documentary film. The work is about the veteran drag performers at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge\, a small bar that has had an outsized influence on San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community for more than twenty years. Sadly\, it is now the last gay bar in the area. The project captures the performers Donna Personna\, Olivia Hart\, and Collette LeGrande as they transform at home\, backstage\, and onstage. It is a candid exploration of aging\, identity\, and labor.\n\nSpecial Evening Viewing with James Hosking in Conversation with Curator Amanda Krugliak with pop-up performances by *Beautiful By Night *protagonists Olivia Hart and Donna Personna Thursday\, January 13\, 6:45pm-8pm.\n\nFor complete details\, visit https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/gallery/current-exhibitions/james-hosking.html.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Yelping From Home Tech Talk Series
DESCRIPTION:Talk: Successfully Leading New Teams\n\nJoining an establishedteam as a new leader is a big undertaking that can have a long-lasting impact on your people. It’s essential to be intentional about your actionsin the first few weeks and months. Each transition experience can be different\, and varies on the team’s current priorities and initiatives. Join us as we chat with Alex and Radhesh\, two Yelp Engineering Managers who have gone through similar leadership transition experiences—both at Yelpand other tech companies. During this virtual chat\, we’ll hear more about what they learned during the transition into their new teams and the steps they took to lead their teams’ priorities successfully.\n\nSpeakers:\n\nRadhesh Gupta:\nRadhesh is an engineering leader at Yelp with 10+ years of experience in the tech industry. Radhesh currently supports a group of teams in the Experimentation and Product Analytics space. Prior to joining Yelp in Toronto\, he has worked in SF\, NY and Bangalore in different roles at startups and larger companies. He has a passion for building impactful products and effective\, happy teams. Outside of work\, he enjoys time with his kids and has a special love for all racquet sports.\n\nAlex Phillips:\nAlex has been at Yelp for just over six years. She joined as a backend engineer and is now an engineering leader for the Ad Product group which is responsible for building valuable advertising capabilities in the suite of advertising products Yelp offers. In her spare time\, she loves to travel (pre-pandemic and hopefully more soon!)\, cook\, and play RPGs.\n\n\nModerator:\n\nTenzin Kunsal:\nAs a part of the Technical Talent Eventsand Partnerships team\, Tenzin works on events and partnerships for Yelp Engineering and Product—everything from Meetups to Hackathons to conferences. Before joining Yelp in '17\, Tenzin was in the nonprofit sector and has worked with education and community building nonprofits in San Francisco and Minneapolis. She is passionate about cultivating diversity and is actively involved in Yelp Employee Resource Groups\, such as ColorCoded andYelp Asian Pacific Islanders.\n\n\nAbout Yelping From Home:\n\nYelp’s mission is to connect people with great local businesses\, and two of the teams working behind the scenes to make that happen are our five star engineering and product teams.\nPlaying an active role in our community is a value that we have strongly prioritized over the years. Typically we would invite you to come to Yelp’s HQ to network\, grab a slice of ‘za\, and learn about the technology and culture behind Yelp. With stay-at-home orders across the globe\, Yelp (like many of you) has had no choice but to adapt to these changes. We understand that this is a strange and challenging time for many\, so we’d like to invite you to join us as we navigate this new normal for the tech community together. \nTo stay connected\, createspace for folks to collaborate and share some of the things Yelp has beenworking on\, we are launching our very own virtual tech talk series. Thisseries of talks will feature Yelpers from engineering and product and will focus on themes such as career development\, technical skills\, workplace challenges and Yelp’s response to COVID-19.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Global Rivers: A New View From Space
DESCRIPTION:The world’s rivers are the veins of our continents\, moving water\, pollutants\, cargo and people from the mountains to the sea. However\, we know surprisingly little about their characteristics at a global scale—how wide are they? When do they freeze? How much sediment do they carry? Images from satellites can help us answer all of these questions. We will explore how a new era of space-based observations is changing our view of rivers.\n\nOur speaker\, Tamlin M. Pavelsky\, UNC Chapel Hill\, is a professor of global hydrology. He received his BA from Middlebury College and PhD from UCLA in Geography. Tamlin is the NASA hydrology lead on the Surface Water and Ocean Topography satellite mission\, launching in 2022. He received a 2012 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers\, the highest U.S. government award for early career researchers. Tamlin grew up outside Fairbanks\, Alaska in cabins without electricity or running water. \n\nThis is the third of a six-lecture series. The subject of the series is Global Waters: The Tip of the Iceberg. The next lecture will take place February 3\, 2022. The title is: A history of Water Accumulation and Loss in the Great Lakes. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects\, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Remembering my Father Fred T. Korematsu and Furthering His Civil Liberties Legacy”
DESCRIPTION:Karen Korematsu is the Founder and Director of the Fred T. Korematsu Institute. She and the Institute are devoted to furthering the memory of Fred Korematsu\, the case Korematsu v. the United States\, a case said to be a “civil liberties disaster”\, and for advancing civil rights and civil liberties\, equity and justice.\n\nFred T. Korematsu was one of many American citizens of Japanese ancestry who were incarcerated during World War II. He is famous for his defying the government’s order to report to an assembly center. Fred Korematsu appealed his case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court\, which ruled against him in 1944. Years later\, his conviction was vacated by the U.S. District Court of Northern California. Fred’s courage and activism were recognized by his receipt of the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Clinton in 1998. Fred T. Korematsu is the first Asian American honored by a state for a day in his name.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Reading Japanese Hihyō in the Postcritical Age
DESCRIPTION:Please note: Due to updated guidance from the university in regards to the COVID policy\, this lecture will be only in a webinar format. Please register here to attend: https://myumi.ch/kyyzy\n\nIf we are to read and criticize a piece of writing\, how would we do it? For contemporary academics in the humanities\, the question emerges urgently. This talk tracks the rise of hihyō as a critical reading practice in late nineteenth-century Japan and conjectures about what \"being critical\" might mean and could become.\n \n Prof Goto's research focuses on modern Japanese literature during and since the Meiji period (1868–1912). She is particularly interested in the emerging process of criticism as an intellectual practice in late nineteenth-century Japan. She is currently working on her book project\, Critical Failures: Theory and Practice of Literary Criticism in Late Nineteenth-Century Japan. Goto received her doctoral degree in East Asian Studies at Princeton University. Before joining the University of Kentucky\, she taught at the University of Virginia and the City University of New York.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public\, but registration is required if you intend to participate virtually. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email. Webinar registration link to be announced. The Center for Japanese Studies will follow state\, local\, and University of Michigan guidelines for in-person events.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy for Reacting Systems and High-Speed Flows
DESCRIPTION:Chloe E. Dedic\nAssistant Professor\nMechanical and Aerospace Engineering\nUniversity of Virginia\n\nThe design and optimization of next-generation aerospace propulsion and combustion systems requires detailed knowledge of thermodynamic properties such as temperature and density. Turbulence\, nonequilibrium\, and high-pressure and temperature conditions relevant for modern combustors make for a challenging measurement environment that can exhibit significant spatial variation and fast temporal dynamics. Although conditions are challenging\, experimental measurements are critical to improve our understanding of these complex reacting flows and to validate chemical kinetic models used to design new vehicles and propulsion devices. For useful comparison with modeling results\, measurements must be sufficiently accurate\, include a careful characterization of boundary conditions\, and\, in the case of unsteady events\, simultaneously measure multiple relevant parameters. \n\nThis seminar will discuss the development and implementation of hybrid femtosecond/picosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (fs/ps CARS) to address these requirements. Advances in spectral simulations for improved accuracy and spatial precision of experimental measurements will be discussed. Novel diagnostic advances and results relevant to plasma-enhanced combustion systems and high-speed vehicles and combustors will be highlighted. \n\nAbout the speaker...\nDr. Chloe Dedic is an Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Before starting at UVA in 2018\, Dr. Dedic was a visiting researcher with the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) at NASA Langley Research Center and obtained her PhD in mechanical engineering at Iowa State University in 2017. She was recently awarded a DARPA Young Faculty Award (2020)\, a NASA Early Career Faculty Award (2020)\, and an AFOSR Young Investigator Program award (2021).\n\nDr. Dedic’s research interests are centered around the development and application of advanced laser-based diagnostics and nonlinear spectroscopy techniques to study reacting and nonequilibrium flows with the goal of furthering technologies related to clean and efficient energy utilization and the propulsion and aerodynamics of hypersonic vehicles.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Astronomy Colloquium Series Presents:
DESCRIPTION:Microphysical Insights into Protoplanetary Disks and Exoplanet Atmospheres:\n\nAbstract: A fundamental understanding of planetary histories and characteristics requires an empirical connection between planet formation and evolved planets—a long-sought goal of astrophysics. This connection is now increasingly possible due to simultaneous revolutions in the observations of protoplanetary disks and exoplanet atmospheres. A key step towards relating these observations of different evolutionary stages is to characterize the composition of material in protoplanetary disks and relate these properties to the atmospheric composition of planets. In this talk\, I will discuss initial steps that I have taken towards this goal. I will provide evidence that protoplanetary disks are more than an order of magnitude more massive than previously appreciated\, that the detailed properties of clouds shape observations of substellar atmospheres\, and that the physics of modeling clouds gives a new understanding of the compositional distribution in protoplanetary disks. If time allows\, I will conclude by briefly discussing avenues for relating planetary properties to the mass inventory in protoplanetary disks in order to develop the observationally-validated framework required to compositionally relate evolved planets to planet formation.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Elasticity Imaging: From Fibrosis and Tumor Pressure to Mechanotransduction and Visualizing Primary Neuronal Activity
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nOnly recently have we understood the importance of mechanical forces between cells to generate tissue homeostasis. This translates equally to the organ level with tissue biomechanics an excellent proxy for pathological alterations.\n\nIn this lecture we will review the current method of quantifying tissue biomechanics via MRI using mechanical shear waves elicitated at the surface of the patient\, new ways to quantify non-invasively tumour pressure via non-linear mechanics\, and look into mechanical changes induced by neuronal activities. Finally\, we will change our position from being a passive bystander quantifying tissue mechanics to an active player altering cellular fate via shear waves.\nBio:\nProfessor Ralph Sinkus is a physicist with a background in high energy physics\, nuclear physics and MRI. He has dual labs at King’s College London’s School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences as well as at INSERM (University Paris Diderot\, Sorbonne Paris Cité\, Hôpital Bichat/Beaujon\, Paris\, France). After a PhD in high energy physics (DESY\, Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron\, Hamburg\, Germany)\, Professor Sinkus took a position at Philips Medical Systems Research Laboratories (Hamburg\, Germany) focusing on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and elastography. Moving back to academia\, Professor Sinkus worked for the Laboratoire Ondes et Acoustique (ESPCI) in Paris\, France as a research director until accepting a chair position at King’s College London. Professor Sinkus is an expert in MRI and MR-elastography\, and works with a diverse range of clinicians\, biomedical engineers\, physists and mathematicians for the translation of these technologies to address clinical diagnostics through imaging.\nOrganized by:\nDr. Brendon Baker\,\nAssistant Professor\, Biomedical Engineering\n\nDr. David Nordsletten\,\nAssociate Professor\, Department of Biomedical Engineering and Cardiac Surgery\n\nZoom Link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96508834308

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: The Philadelphia Police and the Long History of the 1985 Bombing of MOVE: Writing the Past in the Vortex of Present
DESCRIPTION:Format: This is a virtual event that will take place via Zoom webinar. Open to the general public. Please register here: https://myumi.ch/7e3qy\n\nDescription: Drawing from never-before-seen records\, interviews with survivors\, and the release of recently declassified documents\, Heather Ann Thompson's forthcoming book seeks to recover the deep origins as well as legacies of one of the most lethal assaults by the police on African American citizens in the history of the twentieth century: the 1985 Philadelphia police bombing of the MOVE organization. Thompson will discuss the possibilities as well as challenges of navigating our discipline’s historiographical goals\, scholarly imperatives\, and methodological boundaries when one seeks to write a history of an iconic and pivotally important event and organization in the past that suddenly\, and quite unexpectedly\, makes news in the present for reasons that may be heartwarming and deeply unsettling alike. \n\nBiography: Heather Ann Thompson is a historian at the University of Michigan in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, Department of History\, and Residential College. She is the author of Whose Detroit: Politics\, Labor\, and Race in a Modern American City\, and Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971\, which won the Pulitzer Prize\, the Bancroft Prize\, was a finalist for the National Book Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Award\, and won five additional book prizes. Thompson also regularly writes about policing and prisons for The New York Times\, The New Yorker\, TIME\, The Washington Post\, Rolling Stone\, etc.\, as well for the top publications in her field. She sits on myriad policy advisory boards\, and was appointed to National Academy of Sciences blue ribbon panel on the causes and consequences of mass incarceration. She currently sits on its standing Committee on Law and Justice. In 2021 Thompson was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to write her next book: Bullet and Burn: The Move Bombing of 1985 and Law and Order America.\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:BIndx Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Black Industrial Engineers (BIndx\, pronounced BIND-ex) group is composed of IOE students and faculty/staff who come together informally for meaningful conversations and fellowship to promote learning\, mentoring and networking. BIndx meetings occur as informal monthly discussions to help form relationships between faculty/staff and minoritized students. Also\, BIndx will host a diverse group of guest speakers throughout the semester with a specific focus to facilitate conversations\, build connections and empower self-reflection.\n\nToday's speaker will be: \nDr. Gian Gabriel-Garcia\nAssistant Professor\nH. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering\nGeorgia Institute of Technology\nIOE Alum\n\nAbstract: Mentorship has been intricately woven into the fabric of my career. As I began my undergraduate education in Industrial Engineering\, I was fortunate to have had mentors who found me and who invested in me and my growth. It did not take long for me to appreciate the value of mentorship. As such\, I have sought to give and receive mentorship in various forms. Throughout this talk\, I will tell the story of my journey in Industrial Engineering\, starting from my undergraduate education at the University of Pittsburgh\, through my graduate student years at the University of Michigan\, and now at my current position as a faculty member at Georgia Tech. As I take you along my journey\, I will discuss the role of mentorship at various points in my career\, how that mentorship has shaped my experiences\, and how my understanding of mentorship has changed over time. I will also relay some of the lessons I learned along the way\, including how to receive\, give\, and find mentorship as you navigate your own careers.\n\nBio: Dr. Gian-Gabriel Garcia is an Assistant Professor in the H. Milton and Caroline J. Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. In his research\, Dr. Garcia is interested in developing data-driven frameworks which integrate prediction and decision analytics as motivated by high-impact problems in health policy\, personalized medicine\, and medical decision-making. He is especially interested in how health equity\, interpretability\, and social/behavioral dynamics impact decision-making at the patient and policy levels. This research spans several disease areas\, including concussion\, opioids\, maternal health\, post-traumatic stress disorder\, and chronic diseases. His research has also received recognition through various awards\, including the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship\, the INFORMS Bonder Scholarship for Applied Operations Research in Health Services\, the SMDM Lee B. Lusted Prize in Quantitative Methods and Theoretical Developments\, first prize in the INFORMS Minority Issues Forum Paper Competition\, and first prize at the INFORMS Minority Issues Forum Poster Competition. Prior to joining Georgia Tech\, Dr. Garcia was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute for Technology Assessment and Harvard Medical School. He also earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan\, and B.S. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. In his service efforts\, Dr. Garcia is passionate about supporting under-represented and minoritized students in engineering through mentorship and outreach.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:POSTPONED: Yuval Sharon
DESCRIPTION:Note: This event\, originally scheduled for January 27\, 2022\, has been postponed. We are working to reschedule this presentation for a later date in 2022.\nHow do we go from tragedy to hope? From death to life? From loneliness to love? In preparation for his new production of Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème at Detroit&#039\;s Michigan Opera Theatre — which will start at the end of the opera and perform \"backwards\" to the beginning — director Yuval Sharon talks about his process towards finding what is still undiscovered in even the most familiar works. From finish to start\, from death to the promise of new love\, from loneliness and despair to the joy of friendships\, wine\, and song\, this reversal presents the characters and arias we love in a refreshing\, new vision of the story. Our favorite starving young artists and lovers survive to hope another day.\nBeyond the realm of opera\, Sharon examines how imaginative engagement with our past — especially in great art of a former era — can offer a critical mode of imagining our common future.\nYuval Sharon has amassed an unconventional body of work that expands the operatic form. He is founder and Artistic Director of The Industry in Los Angeles and the newly appointed Gary L. Wasserman Artistic Director of Detroit’s Michigan Opera Theatre.\nWith The Industry\, Sharon has directed and produced new operas in moving vehicles\, operating train stations\, Hollywood sound stages\, and various “non-spaces” such as warehouses\, parking lots\, and escalator corridors. From 2016-2019\, Sharon was the first Artist-Collaborator at the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, creating nine projects that included newly commissioned works\, site-specific installations\, and performances outside the hall. His residency culminated in a major revival of Meredith Monk’s opera ATLAS\, making him the first director Monk entrusted with a new production of her work.\nIn Fall 2021\, Sharon mounted BLISS\, a re-staging of three sublime minutes of The Marriage of Figaro\, which marked the first live performance being performed in the iconic Michigan Building Theatre since its conversion to a parking center\, breaking a fifty-year performance hiatus in the space.\nLearn more about COVID-19 protocols for Penny Stamps Speaker Series events.

WISE invites all students and postdoctoral scholars who have concerns about gender equity in STEM to join a community conversation (via Zoom) on Thursday\, January 27th from 5:30-6:30 PM. SUMMARY:Performance:The Reverón Trio performs Latin American Works
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Diversity & Belonging: Unsung Keyboard Stories Conference\n\nAna María Otamendi\, piano - 2021 Emerging Artist in Music\nSimón Gollo\, violin\nHoracio Contreras\, cello\n\nPROGRAM\nTrio Romántico - Manuel Ponce \nLa Hamaca (The Hammock) - Ricardo Lorenz \nTrio No. 1\, op. 35 - Joaquín Turina \n\nThe Reverón Piano Trio’s main goal is to introduce audiences to underrepresented music from Latin America alongside contemporary and standard repertoire. These seasoned artists are active promoters of Latin American music through their work as scholars and entrepreneurs\, and they have devoted their careers to the discovery\, cataloguing\, performance\, and recording of this rich repertoire. In addition\, the trio continues to commission new works\, and is in the process of creating the Sphinx Catalog of Latin American Piano Trios. Ana María\, Simón\, and Horacio are all Venezuelan artists that have made their home in the United States.\n\nThe Reverón Trio is named after Venezuelan artist Armando Reverón\, one of the earliest American modernists. Despite the fact that Reverón is now regarded as a highly influential figure in Latin America\, his work is not celebrated outside the borders of Venezuela. Similarly\, the music of Latin America is virtually unknown\, especially the piano trio literature.
