SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beautiful By Night
DESCRIPTION:Artist James Hosking lived in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood from 2010 to 2018\, during which time he developed the *Beautiful By Night* photo series and documentary film. The work is about the veteran drag performers at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge\, a small bar that has had an outsized influence on San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community for more than twenty years. Sadly\, it is now the last gay bar in the area. The project captures the performers Donna Personna\, Olivia Hart\, and Collette LeGrande as they transform at home\, backstage\, and onstage. It is a candid exploration of aging\, identity\, and labor.\n\nSpecial Evening Viewing with James Hosking in Conversation with Curator Amanda Krugliak with pop-up performances by *Beautiful By Night *protagonists Olivia Hart and Donna Personna Thursday\, January 13\, 6:45pm-8pm.\n\nFor complete details\, visit https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/gallery/current-exhibitions/james-hosking.html.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:“The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice” by Dr. Scott Ellsworth
DESCRIPTION:The story of the Tulsa Massacre (1821) has become a symbol of what has been erased in the telling of American history. Scott Ellsworth\, a native of Tulsa\, stumbled upon an article about the “race riot” as a 12-year old when a librarian was demonstrating a new technology—microfilm. He turned to that subject for his undergraduate history thesis at Reed College in Oregon and then the book “Death in a Promised Land” (1992). His book was considered the first-ever comprehensive history of the horrific 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. \n\nWith “The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice”\, Professor Ellsworth returns to the subject of Tulsa. Described as “riveting and essential\,” The Ground Breaking not only recounts the long-suppressed story of the notorious Tulsa race massacre\, it also unearths the lost history of how the massacre was covered up and the courageous individuals who fought to keep the story alive. Most importantly\, it recounts the ongoing archaeological search for the unmarked graves of the victims of the massacre and of the fight to win restitution for the survivors and their families. \n\nBoth a forgotten chronicle from the nation’s past and a story ripped from today’s headlines\, The Ground Breaking is a page-turning reflection on how we\, as Americans\, must wrestle with the parts of our history that have been buried for far too long. The New York Times described The Ground Breaking as “A skillful narrative of excavating the truth about the Tulsa race massacre. . .Candid and self-aware. . . Part of what makes this book so riveting is Ellsworth’s skillful narration\, his impeccable sense for when to reveal a piece of information and when to hold something back.” The book was long-listed for the National Book Award\, the Carnegie Medal from the American Library Association and recently was named as one of the Best Books of 2021 by Publishers Weekly. \n\nDr. Scott Ellsworth is a faculty member in the University of Michigan’s Department of Afro-American and African Studies. He teaches courses on African American history\, Southern literature\, race and sports\, and crime and justice in contemporary U.S. society. Trained as a historian\, he received his BA from Reed College and his MA and PhD from Duke University. \n\nFormerly a historian with the Smithsonian Institution\, he has written about American history for the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, and the Los Angeles Times\, and has appeared on National Public Radio\, the TODAY Show\, PBS’s The American Experience\, the History Channel\, the BBC\, and in both film and broadcast documentaries. His book\, “The Secret Game”\, won a 2016 PEN Book Award\, and was named by the Chicago Tribune as one of the Top Ten Books of the Year.\n\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the presentation will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Zijun Gao\, PhD Candidate\, Department of Statistics\, Stanford University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \"Heterogeneous treatment effect models allow us to compare treatments at subgroup and individual levels\, and are of increasing popularity in applications like personalized medicine\, advertising\, and education. In this talk\, we first survey different causal estimands used in practice\, which focus on estimating the difference in conditional means. We then propose DINA — the difference in natural parameters — to quantify heterogeneous treatment effect in exponential families and the Cox model. For binary outcomes and survival times\, DINA is both convenient and more practical for modeling the influence of covariates on the treatment effect. Second\, we introduce a meta-algorithm for DINA\, which allows practitioners to use powerful off-the-shelf machine learning tools for the estimation of nuisance functions\, and which is also statistically robust to errors in inaccurate nuisance function estimation. We demonstrate the efficacy of our method combined with various machine learning base-learners on simulated and real datasets.\" \n\nhttps://zijungao.github.io/

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CCPS Lecture. Cuts: An Oral History of Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Authors Aleksandra Leyk and Joanna Wawrzyniak will discuss their award-winning book *Cuts: An Oral History of Transformation [Cięcia. Mówiona historia transformacji]*\, which addresses how Poland’s rapid socio-economic transformation in the 1990s is remembered by those who lived it. Drawing on over 130 biographical interviews with chief executives\, managers\, trade union representatives\, administrative staff\, and shop floor workers of socialist enterprises privatized and sold to multinationals\, *Cuts* shows the complexity\, ambivalence\, and tensions inherent to the experience and memory of socio-economic change. While the book highlights local reactions to the neo-liberal turn taking place globally\, its lessons reach far beyond Poland.\n\nAleksandra Leyk is a researcher and public policy expert on adult education at The Educational Research Institute (IBE) in Warsaw. In the academic field\, she specializes on the social consequences of capitalist transformations of work and the labor market.\n\nJoanna Wawrzyniak is associate professor of sociology and director of the Center for Research on Social Memory at the University of Warsaw. Specializing on East-Central European memory processes\, her current projects include memories of socialism\, the neoliberal transformation\, and deindustrialization processes in Poland. She also conducts collaborative research on cultural heritage and memory processes in Western Europe and East and South Asia. She is the co-author of *The Enemy on Display* (2015)\, the author of *Veterans\, Victims and Memory* (2015) and has co-edited special issues for *Contemporary European History*\; *East European Politics and Societies*\; *Polish Sociological Review*\; and volumes *Memory and Change in Europe* (2016) and *Regions of Memory: Transnational Formations* (forthcoming).\n\nRegistration for this webinar is required at https://myumi.ch/Nm1mp\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Digitizing non-digital data: time\, issues\, and monotony in the process of digitizing PhD data
DESCRIPTION:Integrating datasets and incorporating legacy data is part of the process when working with archaeological materials. The domestic area of the site of Tell es-Safi/Gath\, as the subject of my Ph.D.\, has provided ample opportunities for both the digitization of legacy data and the integration of multiple datasets. I will begin with the history of the site and excavations but will focus primarily on the process of data digitization and the bumps along the way. The digitization of spatial data from past excavation reports and field journals is often a tedious process and we will explore some of the reasons that is the case. I will finish with the reasons that we as archaeologists go through the tedious processes and face the issues that pop up when digitizing and publishing older data\, the work that we have been able to do\, things that the team has been able to uncover and the possibilities for future research that these endeavors provide.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:EIHS Symposium: Radical Futures Through Indigenous Political Thought
DESCRIPTION:Format: This is a virtual event that will take place via Zoom webinar. Open to the general public. Please register here: https://myumi.ch/9P6Xd\n\nDescription: Who gets to have futures? Who gets to imagine futures? Indigenous political activists and Indigenous studies scholars have turned these questions on their head. Indigenous peoples have too often been framed through the past. What would it mean to recognize their centrality to visions of futurity? Nowhere\, perhaps\, is this question more urgent than in the face of climate change and ecological disaster. Indigenous communities’ perspectives on sustainability offer critical methods and insights for thinking about our collective futures. This panel explores the contributions of Indigenous knowledge\, Indigenous sciences\, and Indigenous political thought to the making of just futures for Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples alike.\n\nPanelists:\n• Rebecca D. Hardin (Associate Professor\, School of Environment and Sustainability\, University of Michigan)\n• Ana María León (Assistant Professor\, History of Art\, University of Michigan)\n• David Myer Temin (Assistant Professor\, Political Science\, University of Michigan)\n• Kyle Whyte (George Willis Pack Professor of Environment and Sustainability\, University of Michigan)\n• Mrinalini Sinha (moderator\; Alice Freeman Palmer Professor of History\, University of Michigan)\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.\n\nImage credit: Screen grab from Biidaaban: First Light (image from Media Kit\; \"Rooted in the realm of Indigenous futurism\, Biidaaban: First Light is an interactive VR time-jump into a highly realistic—and radically different—Toronto of tomorrow.\").

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Beyond Privacy: Fairness in How Personal Data is Used in Our New Digital World
DESCRIPTION:Starting from revealing the reason why January 28 is celebrated as “Data Privacy” Day\, this talk will explain why there is a difference between “data protection” and “privacy”\, which are two different rights recognized as such at constitutional level in Europe and a couple of jurisdictions in Latin America - most recently in Brazil\, and manifesting distinctively elsewhere even when not expressly recognized by law as being two different rights. It is essential to understand this difference\, because it has consequences in the age of automated decision-making and algorithms that impact people and their communities. Looking at several real-life cases from the past three years adjudicated in Europe and all involving a form of automated decision-making underpinned by processing of personal data\, this talk will underline how the essential elements of data protection law - including fairness\, transparency\, individual control over personal data - are shaping up the safeguarding of individual rights in the new digital world. The presentation will end with a look towards several large jurisdictions which are adopting data protection specific laws\, everywhere around the world\, from California\, to Brazil\, China\, Kenya and India.\n\nDr. Florian Schaub\, Assistant Professor of Information\, School of Information and Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science\, College of Engineering\, will be facilitating Q&A time after the keynote presentation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Technology's Law of Amplification and What It Means for Organizations Kentaro Toyama
DESCRIPTION:Over the years\, the tech industry has made many promises to organizational customers -- for example\, that its products would improve efficiency\, reduce costs\, and increase scale. More recently\, the promises have extended to such things as improving teamwork and decision-making. While these promises have been realized in some contexts\, they remain largely unmet in others. Is there a way to distinguish between realism and hype in computing? Technology's \"Law of Amplification\" is a simple idea that captures digital technology's impact. This talk will reveal how it explains a broad range of past and existing organizational phenomena\, and how it suggests predictions for the future.

SUMMARY:Presentation:CCN Forum: Towards an inclusive neurobiology of language
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nUnderstanding how our brains process language is one of the fundamental issues in cognitive science. In order to reach such understanding\, it is critical to cover the full spectrum of manners in which humans acquire and experience language. However\, due to a myriad of socioeconomic factors\, research has disproportionately focused on monolingual English speakers. In this talk\, I present a series of studies that systematically target fundamental questions about bilingual language use across a range of conversational contexts\, both in production and comprehension. The results lay the groundwork to propose a more inclusive theory of the neurobiology of language\, with an architecture that assumes a common selection principle at each linguistic level and can account for attested features of both bilingual and monolingual speech in\, but crucially also out of\, experimental settings.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: To See the Forest for the Leaves: Evolution of Tropical Rainforests in Deep Time
DESCRIPTION:Living tropical rainforests are hotspots of biodiversity and are key components of global hydrology and climate. These ecological functions are highly dependent on tree composition\, canopy structure\, and a high complexity of biotic and abiotic interactions that affect forest function. How has tropical rainforest composition and function changed through geologic time?\n\nLeaf fossils reflect deep evolutionary relations that interplay with environmental and growth conditions\, and can be used to identify the natural affinities of plants\, and assess both biotic interactions and assessment of forest ecology. In this talk I will explore the Late Cretaceous and Paleogene leaf fossil record from the northern Andes of Colombia and use an interdisciplinary approach to study the evolution of tropical forests in response to two major events in Earth’s history: the ecological catastrophe at the end-Cretaceous and the global warming events of the Paleocene-Eocene transition. I combine observational and experimental approaches on plant function with the fossil record to unveil changes in forest composition\, structure\, biotic interactions and forest paleobiology. This approach is key to understanding the effects of past global warming events and other abiotic perturbations on tropical rainforest function\, and a means to predict the response of modern ecosystems to ongoing and future climate projections. \n\n\nIf you wish to attend remotely: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98984587392

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CSAS Lecture | Spatializing Islam during the Early Cold War: the ‘Ahmadi Question’ in the Munir Kayani Report and Pakistani Literature
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance for this Zoom event. Registration is here: https://myumi.ch/V77MN\n\nWith reference to several fictive and non-fictive texts\, this talk explores how Ahmadis\, classified as “non-Muslims\,” have occupied and moved through space in Pakistan. I focus primarily on Manto’s “Letters to Uncle Sam” and the Government of Pakistan’s Munir-Kayani Report on the Punjab Disturbances of 1953\, both published in Pakistan’s early years\, which are\, of course\, also the early years of the Cold War\, and briefly move through the following decades with references to Nadeem Aslam’s 2013 novel\, *Season of the Rainbirds*\, and Uzma Aslam Khan’s 2018 short story\, “My Mother is a Lunar Crater.” My argument is that spatial analyses of textual representations of non-Muslim identities in fictive and non-fictive texts illustrate how Pakistan was engaging in state-making and nation-making simultaneously to define spaces themselves—indeed using the trappings of a religiously-exclusionary nationalism to bolster state operations and claim space—during these years. By taking a spatial turn—that is\, by attending to the territorialization or geospatialization of Islam in Pakistan—I extend Sadia Saeed’s work on how the eventual constitutional exclusion of Ahmadis from the Muslim community in Pakistan contests the assumption the “processes of nation building occur independently of the construction of state institutions” (132). Saeed’s analysis concerns itself with how the Pakistani state inflected and took shape from “a new definition of the national community by equating the nation with Islam[\,]” a move that\, in Saeed’s view\, led to the “construction of new social imaginaries” (133). I’m interested in how these imaginaries take material form\, and\, in doing so\, I maintain Saeed’s impulse but shift the focus to better understand how the conflation of “Muslim” and “Pakistani” operates in place\, both intra-nationally and internationally. The Cold War and its aftermath serve as the international context in which I attempt to situate Pakistan’s domestic moves vis-à-vis the Ahmadiyya community. From Jinnah’s purposeful citation of George C. Marshall in his address to the Constituent Assembly on 11 August 1947 and US Information Service’s proposal to Manto in the early 1950s to Bhutto’s and Zia’s explicit legal exclusions of Ahmadis in the 1970s and 1980s\, respectively\, I trace parallels between Pakistan’s internal and international dynamics to highlight the ambient conditions bringing together Cold War geopolitics and certain iterations of Pakistan’s efforts to define “Islam.”\n\nSaeed\, Sadia. “Pakistani Nationalism and the State Marginalisation of the Ahmadiyya Community in Pakistan.” \n*Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism* 7.3 (2007): 122-152.\n\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:Karen Walwyn\, piano
DESCRIPTION:part of the Diversity & Belonging: Unsung Keyboard Stories Conference\n\nPROGRAM\nIn the Land O’ Cotton Suite - Florence Price \nChild Asleep - Florence Price\nArkansas Jitter - Florence Price\nSonata in E Minor - Florence Price\n“A Journey from Afar” from Mother Emanuel: Charleston Karen Walwyn \n\nKaren Walwyn\, Concert Pianist\, Composer\, an Albany Recording Artist and a Florence Price Scholar is the first female African American pianist/ composer to receive the Steinway Artist Award.\nA native of New York\, Concert Pianist Karen Walwyn made her New York solo piano debut at Merkin Hall as a follow-up to her 2-CD series for Albany Records entitled Dark Fires\, offering premiere recordings of works by American composers of African descent. Bill Faucett from The American Record Guide said “ Walwyn’s pianism is superb”\, and Peter Burwasser from Fanfare Magazine said “Walwyn gets through this technically demanding program with aplomb. Her rhythmic nimbleness is especially notable.”\n\nDark Fires’ first volume includes composers Dolores White\, Lettie Beckon Alston\, Tania León\, Hale Smith\, Roger Dickerson\, Jeffrey Mumford\, and Adolphus Hailstork.\n\nDark Fires’ second album includes composers Ellis Marsalis\, David Baker\, Alvin Singleton\, Adolphus Hailstork and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson.\nAs a Composer\, she received the Global Award: Gold Medal -Award of Excellence for her recording of her composition entitled Reflections on 9/11. Robert Schulslaper of Fanfare Magazine wrote: “Imaginatively conceived and executed\, it both disturbingly transposes the catastrophe into appropriately cataclysmic sound and artistically suggests the aftermath’s lingering sense of numbing devastation.” The demand for concerts of this seven-movement ‘tour de force’ continuously carries her across the nation for command performances\, which was first premiered in full at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C.\n\nAs a Mellon Faculty Fellow at the John Hope Franklin Institute\, Duke University\, Walwyn composed her debut choral work entitled Of Dance & Struggle: A Musical Tribute on the Life of Nelson Mandela\, (Choir/Solo Piano/African Percussion) commissioned and performed by the Elon University Chorale under the direction of Dr. Gerald Knight.\n\nScored for a 100+choir\, African Drums\, Dancers\, it is a multi-movement multimedia work\, the premiere performance included choreographer Jason Aryeh.\n\nOf Dance and Struggle was heralded by the South African Embassy in Washington\, D.C. as “a monumental work for our beloved president\, Nelson Mandela.”\n\nAs a Florence Price Scholar\, Dr. Walwyn remains active in the research and work towards recordings of new music by Florence Price. She was invited by deputy director Morris Phibbs of the Center of Black Music Research of Chicago to perform and record the premiere recording of the Florence Price Concerto for Piano with the New Black Music Repertory Ensemble conducted by Leslie B Dunner of Chicago on Albany Records. “Walwyn provides a magnificent account of the concerto displaying her considerable technical skills”\, reviewed by Bob McQuiston at NPR. Shortly after this release\, she was invited as a guest artist on the documentary by Dr. James Greeson for his Emmy nominated film entitled The Caged Bird: The Life and Music of Florence B. Price which features Walwyn as one of the pioneering soloists of the music of Florence Price.\n\nOn her trip to Arkansas to visit the former homes of Ms. Price in Little Rock\, and to review the precious letters at Special Collections at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville\, Dr. Walwyn had the opportunity to discover important history not yet told about which she shares in her many interviews and workshops on Florence Price. Learn more about Florence B. Price on Dr. Walwyn’s florenceprice.org here.\n\nDr. Walwyn\, Area Coordinator of Keyboard Studies at Howard University\, is in constant concert demand nationally and internationally for both her repertoire from Frédéric Chopin to Florence Price\, as well as for performances of her own works for solo piano\, choir and instrumental ensemble. And as a composer\, she remains exceedingly busy with the completion of and performance of her commissions.\n\nPre-covid\, some recent concerts include appearances in Johannesburg\, South Africa\; Barcelona\, Spain\; Tenerife\, Canary Islands\; Salzburg\, Austria\; London\, England\; and Nice\, France. Nationally\, Walwyn has performed throughout the contiguous United States\, Hawaii\, West Indies and the Virgin Islands.\nDr. Karen’s hobby is creating music therapy for pets! Her favorite pup\, Miles\, who was once a beautiful German Shepherd\, taught her a lot about music affected him and after much research\, she created her on line of albums for pets: Allegro Paws.\n\nMaking her compositional debut recently at the Kennedy Center\, Dr. Walwyn received a tremendous standing ovation for her work for solo piano entitled “Reflections on 9/11”. “Imaginatively conceived and executed\, it both disturbingly transposes the catastrophe into appropriately cataclysmic sound and artistically suggests the aftermath’s lingering sense of numbing devastation.” reviewed by Robert Schulslaper of Fanfare Magazine. The demand for concerts of this seven-movement ‘tour de force’ work continuously takes her across the nation for command performances.\n\nco-sponsored by CEW+ Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund
