SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beautiful By Night
DESCRIPTION:Artist James Hosking lived in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood from 2010 to 2018\, during which time he developed the *Beautiful By Night* photo series and documentary film. The work is about the veteran drag performers at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge\, a small bar that has had an outsized influence on San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community for more than twenty years. Sadly\, it is now the last gay bar in the area. The project captures the performers Donna Personna\, Olivia Hart\, and Collette LeGrande as they transform at home\, backstage\, and onstage. It is a candid exploration of aging\, identity\, and labor.\n\nSpecial Evening Viewing with James Hosking in Conversation with Curator Amanda Krugliak with pop-up performances by *Beautiful By Night *protagonists Olivia Hart and Donna Personna Thursday\, January 13\, 6:45pm-8pm.\n\nFor complete details\, visit https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/gallery/current-exhibitions/james-hosking.html.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

DESCRIPTION:Julia\n\nTitle:\nVisible and invisible privileges: An interpersonal headwind/tailwind asymmetry in assessments of barriers and blessings\n\nAbstract:\nPeople tend to notice the barriers that have obstructed their progress more than the blessings that have helped them along the way\, a phenomenon known as the “headwinds/tailwinds asymmetry”. However\, when people do notice their privileges\, they tend to notice other people who have helped them more than they notice non-interpersonal forces such as their race\, gender\, or socioeconomic status. SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Detroit Financial Well-Being Innovation Challenge Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Detroit Financial Well-being Innovation Challenge is a multi-year\, $2M+ initiative supported by United Way for Southeastern Michigan to provide funding and support to cross-sector organizations to think big\, collaborate\, plan\, pilot\, and scale new ideas to improve Detroiters’ financial lives. \n\nDuring the virtual launch event\, you'll learn more about how to participate in the Challenge\, and have the opportunity to engage in interactive idea-sharing activities. The event is open to potential applicant organizations\, stakeholders\, and members of the public.\n\nThe Challenge builds off University of Michigan’s Poverty Solutions’ research report\, The Financial Well-Being of Detroit Residents: What Do We Know?. Report findings showed that Detroit residents face deep and persistent financial disadvantages even as compared to residents of peer cities – and that these disadvantages are the result of systemic inequities. \n\nFor more information about this research and the Innovation Challenge made possible with support from JPMorganChase\, General Motors\, and Comerica\, visit https://unitedwaysem.org/fwb

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Probing the frontiers of QCD
DESCRIPTION:Zoom link: \nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/94692610056\n\nHigh-energy particle accelerators make possible precision studies of the Standard Model of particle physics and beyond. The strong force between quarks and gluons is described by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD)\, which is responsible for the vast majority of collider events. QCD remains the least well-understood component of the Standard Model since it is strongly coupled at low energies\, making it challenging to obtain first-principles predictions. Sprays of nearly collimated particles\, called jets\, are the direct evidence of processes on distance scales far smaller than the size of an individual proton. The energies and directions of jets and the distributions of particles within them carry the imprint of QCD processes\, from micro- to macroscopic length scales. I will discuss recent advances in the study of particle jets using modern methods of quantum field theories\, which have helped to establish jets as unique precision tools at collider experiments. These novel ideas in jet identification and probes of jet substructure have been adopted by the experimental collaborations at the Large Hadron Collider\, and they provide new research directions for the Electron-Ion Collider\, the premier future project in the U.S. Nuclear Physics program. Another frontier at high-energy collider experiments is hadronization\, the nonperturbative transition of low-energy quarks and gluons to hadrons. Here\, perturbative techniques are generally not applicable\, but progress in quantum computing may eventually allow for first-principles simulations. I will present first proof-of-concept studies using existing quantum devices from IBM and outline future directions.\n\n\n
