SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beautiful By Night
DESCRIPTION:Artist James Hosking lived in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood from 2010 to 2018\, during which time he developed the *Beautiful By Night* photo series and documentary film. The work is about the veteran drag performers at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge\, a small bar that has had an outsized influence on San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community for more than twenty years. Sadly\, it is now the last gay bar in the area. The project captures the performers Donna Personna\, Olivia Hart\, and Collette LeGrande as they transform at home\, backstage\, and onstage. It is a candid exploration of aging\, identity\, and labor.\n\nSpecial Evening Viewing with James Hosking in Conversation with Curator Amanda Krugliak with pop-up performances by *Beautiful By Night *protagonists Olivia Hart and Donna Personna Thursday\, January 13\, 6:45pm-8pm.\n\nFor complete details\, visit https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/gallery/current-exhibitions/james-hosking.html.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Ziwei Zhu\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Statistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this talk\, I will present two recent works on rank-constrained least squares and distributed statistical learning respectively. The first part of the talk highlights a near optimal in-sample prediction error bound for the rank-constrained least squares estimator with no assumption on the design matrix. Lying at the heart of the proof is a covering number bound for the family of projection operators corresponding to the subspaces spanned by the design. By leveraging this complexity result\, we perform a power analysis for a permutation test on the existence of a low-rank signal under the high-dimensional trace regression model. The second part of the talk proposes a new one-shot distributed learning algorithm through refitting Bootstrap samples from local models\, which we refer to as ReBoot. Given that the full sample is split into m subsamples of size n\, we show that ReBoot yields bias of order (1 / n ^ 2) under generalized linear models. This bias rate is sharper than that of vanilla or subsampled averaging of the local MLEs. Simulation and real data analysis both demonstrate the superior statistical accuracy of ReBoot over competing methods including Communication-efficient Surrogate Likelihood (CSL) and Federated Averaging (FedAvg). \n\n\nZiwei Zhu is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Statistics at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. His research interests are federated/distributed statistical learning\, high-dimensional statistics\, robust statistics\, and missing data.\n\nPrior to UMich\, he was a research associate at the Statistical Laboratory at the University of Cambridge\, hosted by Professor Richard Samworth. He obtained his Ph.D. at the Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering (ORFE) at Princeton University\, advised by Professor Jianqing Fan\, and did his undergraduate study at the Special Class of Gifted Young at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC).\n\nHis recent research focus is on best subset selection and communication-efficient statistical learning algorithms.\n\nhttps://purplebamboo1993.github.io/personal_web/

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:STS Distinguished Lecture. The Secret History of Rules: Algorithms\, Laws\, and Paradigms
DESCRIPTION:Three clusters of meanings have defined what rules could be since antiquity: algorithms\, laws\, and paradigms. Two of these clusters are still very much with us: laws and rules still keep close company\, and algorithms have become the prototypical rules. But the third cluster\, centered on paradigms\, is not only no longer synonymous with rules\; it has come to be opposed to them – most famously in Thomas S. Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962). Yet for over two thousand years\, in both ancient and modern European languages\, right through the Enlightenment\, rules were paradigms – as well as laws and algorithms. This is the secret history of rules\, reconstructed from examples of their pre-modern application.\n\nBio: Lorraine Daston is Director emerita at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin\, a regular Visiting Professor in the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago\, and Permanent Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. Her work spans a broad range of topics in the early modern and modern history of science\, including probability and statistics\, wonders and the order of nature\, scientific images\, objectivity and other epistemic virtues\, quantification\, observation\, algorithms\, and the moral authority of nature. Her most recent books are Against Nature (MIT Press\, 2019) and Rules: A Short History of What We Live By (Princeton University Press\, 2021). Her scholarship has been recognized by the Sarton Medal of the History of Science Society\, the Dan David Prize\, and the Heineken Prize for History of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | From Huts to Palaces: Understanding the Architecture of Rome's First Houses
DESCRIPTION:The old cliche says \"Rome wasn't built in a day.\" However\, Rome transformed from a city of mud huts to one of stone palaces within a fifty-year period\, or one may even say\, \"a day.\" In this talk\, IPCAA graduate student Amelia Eichengreen discusses Rome's changing architectural landscape from huts to palaces as well as the current state of the field\, what the huts looked like\, how they were used\, and how they can help us to better understand Rome's earliest inhabitants.\n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, and graduate students talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors. SUMMARY:Presentation:Methods Hour: Predicting Avoidable Hospital Events in Maryland
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nPredictive analytics and big data are playing a larger role in healthcare than ever before\, but how do predictive models get from a journal article to clinical practice? In this Methods Hour talk\, I'll discuss a predictive model that is currently being used by primary care providers in Maryland to statistically triage their patients and how the production predictive analytics process differs from publishing results in a journal. The main issues we'll discuss include: What makes a predictive model not only predictive of outcomes but also a useful tool for providers in their every day practice workflows? What are the issues that need to be considered when a predictive model is used to guide clinical decisions like who will get limited care resources?

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Using AI to Study Problems of Innovation in Science and Business
DESCRIPTION:Innovation involves recombining past knowledge. The increasing rate at which scientific knowledge is expanding should bode well for innovation. Nevertheless\, new problems related to the appraisal and valuation of new ideas and inventions are inhibiting innovation. One problem is that more scientific studies fail than pass replication tests\, which has led to a deep skepticism of science\, billions in economic losses\, funding cuts\, and a weakened job market in psychology. A second problem is that patent review has slowed while patent examiner disagreement and wrongful rejections of meritorious patent applications have risen. In this exploratory study\, we investigate the potential of AI and machine learning to enhance the innovation evaluation process. \nIn study 1\, we trained an artificial intelligence model to estimate a paper’s replicability using ground truth data on studies that had passed or failed manual replication tests\, and then tested the model’s generalizability on an extensive set of out-of-sample studies. The model predicts replicability better than the base rate of reviewers and on part with prediction markets\, the best present-day method for predicting replicability. We then used the model to conduct a discipline-wide census of replicability in Psychology. The analysis covers 14\,129 papers\, the near universe of all papers published in Psychology journals over a 20-year period in the six major subfields of Developmental\, Social\, Clinical\, Cognitive\, Organizational\, and Personality psychology. We find replicability varies by subfield\, research design methods\, but not institutional prestige. Further\, researchers’ past research records and social media strongly predict replicability\; in particular\, media attention predicts non-replication. \nIn study 2\, we use new data on almost 4\,000\,000 U.S. patent applications\, 2\,000\,000 EU patents\, and 250\,000 Canadian patents to test AI’s ability to identify patentable inventions and their future citation impact. We report three key findings. First\, AI accurately predicts human experts’ decisions in spotting meritorious innovation at agreement levels of up to 95%\, which is remarkable given the degree of variation and potential disagreement among individual patent examiners. Second\, although hit patents disproportionately drive investments and innovation\, current models and analysts have been unable to predict a patent’s future influence. We find that AI accurately predicts an invention’s future influence from application data\, providing a new view of technological trajectories at the earliest time possible. Third\, AI can reduce review process biases and misevaluations. Using applications that were mistakenly rejected by examiners but should have been accepted\, AI model would made 47% fewer wrongful rejections. \nIn the case of both scientific papers and patents\, AI appears to garner error-reducing information not from the application’s quantified data but from its descriptive free-text\, which machines quantify better than humans. We discuss how these findings can improve innovation\, scientific training\, and performance.

SUMMARY:Presentation:CCN Forum:
DESCRIPTION:Cody\n\nTitle:\nListeners extract spectral and temporal information from the mouth during naturalistic audiovisual speech\n\nAbstract:\nSeeing a speaker’s face helps speech perception. But\, what features of the face convey meaningful speech information? Although visual signals from the mouth have been shown to restore auditory speech information\, it remains possible that statistical features including temporal and spectral information can be extracted from other regions of the face. Here\, we test whether viewing the mouth is sufficient for restoring spectral and temporal speech information. Across three different experiments\, using eye-tracking\, partial occlusion of faces\, and extraction of features from the face using a deep learning toolkit\, we tested whether spectral and temporal speech information is recovered from different regions of the face. Preliminary results across all studies demonstrate that viewing the mouth is necessary and sufficient for the extraction and use of lipreading\, temporal and spectral speech information.\n\nLogan\n\nTitle:\nCognitive & Linguistic Biases of Transformer Language Models\n\nAbstract:\nRecent neural-net language models such as GPT-2/3 have achieved unprecedented advances in tasks ranging from machine translation to text summarization. These models are of growing interest in psycholinguistics\, and cognitive science more broadly\, in part because the models’ learned representations provide the basis for quantitative predictions of human data such as gaze durations in eye-tracking reading studies\, and the models’ internal processing of such models is interpretable in terms of interference-based memory theories. We outline a general method to probe the nature of the inductive biases in neural-net language models (biases that are not simply reflections of the big-data on which they are trained)\, asking questions about how these biases may give shape to attested properties of human language\, and illustrate the method with a preliminary study of GPT-2's biases for syntactic dependency length –which has played important roles in sentence processing research and in cross-linguistic typological studies.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Conflicting Appearances\, Suspension of Judgment\, and Pyrrhonian Skepticism without Commitment
DESCRIPTION:Title: Conflicting Appearances\, Suspension of Judgment\, and Pyrrhonian Skepticism without Commitment\n\nAbstract: By means of the Ten Modes\, Pyrrhonian skeptics appeal to\nconflicting appearances to bring about suspension of judgment.\nHowever\, precisely how the skeptic might do so in a non-dogmatic\nmanner is not entirely clear and raises broader questions concerning\nthe rationality of Pyrrhonian skepticism. In this paper\, I argue\nagainst existing accounts of the Modes and defend an alternative\naccount which better explains the logical structure\, rational nature\,\nand effectiveness of the Modes. In particular\, I clarify how the Modes\nappeal to concerns about epistemic impartiality and circularity\, the\nnature of the skeptic’s non-doxastic attitude(s)\, and how the skeptic\ncan employ the Modes non-dogmatically.\n\nThis event is completely virtual and will take place via Zoom.\nZoom info: \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/94430716234\n\nMeeting ID: 944 3071 6234\nPasscode: 114100\nOne tap mobile\n+16468769923\,\,94430716234# US (New York)\n+13017158592\,\,94430716234# US (Washington DC)\n\nDial by your location\n +1 646 876 9923 US (New York)\n +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n +1 587 328 1099 Canada\n +1 647 374 4685 Canada\n +1 647 558 0588 Canada\n +1 778 907 2071 Canada\n +1 204 272 7920 Canada\n +1 438 809 7799 Canada\nMeeting ID: 944 3071 6234\nFind your local number: https://umich.zoom.us/u/aeogy3z2OK\n\nJoin by SIP\n94430716234@zoomcrc.com\n\nJoin by H.323\n162.255.37.11 (US West)\n162.255.36.11 (US East)\n115.114.131.7 (India Mumbai)\n115.114.115.7 (India Hyderabad)\n213.19.144.110 (Amsterdam Netherlands)\n213.244.140.110 (Germany)\n103.122.166.55 (Australia Sydney)\n103.122.167.55 (Australia Melbourne)\n149.137.40.110 (Singapore)\n64.211.144.160 (Brazil)\n149.137.68.253 (Mexico)\n69.174.57.160 (Canada Toronto)\n65.39.152.160 (Canada Vancouver)\n207.226.132.110 (Japan Tokyo)\n149.137.24.110 (Japan Osaka)\nMeeting ID: 944 3071 6234\nPasscode: 114100

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | The Large Charge Expansion
DESCRIPTION:Over the last few years\, it has become clear that working in sectors of large global charge leads to significant simplifications when studying strongly coupled CFTs\, theories which are otherwise often inaccessible to analytic methods. It allows us in particular to calculate the CFT data as an expansion in inverse powers of the large charge.\nIn this talk\, I will introduce the large-charge expansion via the simple example of the O(2) model and will then apply it to a number of other systems which display a richer structure\, such as those with non-Abelian global symmetry groups. Using large-N methods in conjunction with large charge gives us even more control over the dynamics and lets us study the system away from the conformal point.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Exceptional Preservation of Tropical Marine Invertebrates and the Emergence of Novel Forms
DESCRIPTION:Extraordinary fossils transform our understanding of evolutionary history\, particularly when they fill major gaps in space and time. Unfortunately\, the origins and phylogenetic relationships of several groups are often obscure because (i) early fossils tend to be rare and/or poorly preserved\, (ii) few early-splitting branches have left living descendants\, (iii) intermediate forms are scarce\, and (iv) there is a considerable collection bias towards fossil-rich deposits in modern mid-to-high latitudes. Such biases affect the ways that major spatio-temporal\, phylogenetic\, and evolutionary questions are addressed. Can we predict the occurrence of evolutionary novelties based on phylogenetic relationships? Do similar forms correlate with similar function\, biology\, and ecology? What role have mega-diverse areas\, like the tropics\, played in the emergence of different groups through time?\n\nIn this talk I will present new fossils and fossil-rich localities with exceptional preservation of marine invertebrates from the Cretaceous of the Neotropics. These tropical Konservat-Lagerstätten give us access to larval\, juvenile\, and adult organisms\, preserving in great detail soft to lightly-biomineralized tissues such as guts\, muscles\, sexual organs\, antennae\, mouthparts\, gills\, eyes\, and neural tissues. Such features—seldom preserved in the fossil record—are crucial to assess the phylogenetic relationships across extinct and extant groups\, and to investigate the evolution of key traits leading to the emergence of novel forms. My results\, the product of active fieldwork\, paired with museum collection-based work and laboratory studies\, challenge the paradigm of a high-latitude origin for several taxa\, bridge the gaps between their predicted molecular divergences and the fossil record\, and highlight the role of ecology and development in the evolution of convergent and novel forms\, through the lens of exceptional preservation in past and present tropical settings.\n\n\nThose wishing to attend remotely should log in to Zoom ID#989 8458 7392

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MCAIM Graduate Seminar: Formation and Scaling of Vortex Rings Generated from Shock-Accelerated Interfaces
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Vortex rings are known to emerge in a variety of flows relevant to astrophysics\, high energy density physics\, and inertial confinement fusion\, where they can significantly affect the flow through the transport of vorticity. We systematically study the generation and scaling of such rings utilizing a numerical platform involving a shock passing through an interface separating two dissimilar fluids along which there is a hole filled with the heavier fluid. As the shock passes through the interface\, it deposits baroclinic vorticity that induces a complex phase inversion process ultimately resulting in the ejection of a ring from the hole. By modulating the aspect ratio of the hole\, the amount of vorticity in the flow available to the ring is controlled. Based on the aspect ratio of the ring\, we find that two distinct flow regimes emerge. For small aspect ratios\, a single ring is generated that contains the majority of the vorticity deposited by the shock. Beyond a critical hole aspect ratio\, however\, the circulation of the ejected ring saturates\, and the additional vorticity in the flow accumulates in a jet that trails the leading ring. This behavior suggests the existence of a fundamental formation number governing the scaling of rings generated from shock-accelerated interfaces\, including those in Richtmyer-Meshkov flows.\n\nThis work is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) NNSA Center of Excellence under cooperative agreement number DE-NA0003869 and by the U.S. DOE NNSA Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship under grant DE-NA0003960.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:From the Archive: Pussy Riot/Zona Prava
DESCRIPTION:We&#039\;re starting the Winter 2022 series virtually with a selection of favorite presentations from the archives. This Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series event originally took place on September 18\, 2014.\nFounding members of the art collective Pussy Riot and Zona Prava\, Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alekhina are Russian conceptual artists and political activists. In August 2012\, following an anti-Putin performance in Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Saviour\, they were sentenced to two years&#039\; imprisonment. In March 2014 they opened the Mordovia office of Zona Prava\, their newly created prisoners’ rights NGO. Tolokonnikova and Alekhina are Lennon Ono Grant for Peace recipients.\nPussy Riot is a feminist punk guerilla performance collective of approximately 11 women. Their unauthorized public performances address feminism\, LGBT rights\, and opposition to Russian President Putin.\nZona Prava (Zone of Rights) was founded by Nadya and Masha on their December 2013 release from prison. The goal of Zona Prava is to aid those in prison who are ready and willing to fight for their rights. The organization provides information\, legal representation\, safety monitoring\, advocacy and oversight.
