This craft talk is meant to inspire, and challenge those writers working on their first manuscripts.\r\n\r\nBrenda Shaughnessy is the author of five poetry collections, most recently *The Octopus Museum* (Knopf 2019), which was a *New York Times* 2019 Notable Book. 2012\u2019s *Our Andromeda* was a finalist for the Griffin International Prize, the PEN\/Open Book Award, and the Kingsley Tufts Prize. She received a 2018 Literature Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and a 2013 Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. Her second book, *Human Dark with Sugar*, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2008. Her poems have appeared in *Best American Poetry*, *The Nation*, *The New Yorker*, *Paris Review*, and elsewhere. She is Professor of English and Creative Writing at Rutgers University-Newark and lives with her family in Verona, NJ. The first part of the talk highlights a near optimal in-sample prediction error bound for the rank-constrained least squares estimator with no assumption on the design matrix. Lying at the heart of the proof is a covering number bound for the family of projection operators corresponding to the subspaces spanned by the design. By leveraging this complexity result, we perform a power analysis for a permutation test on the existence of a low-rank signal under the high-dimensional trace regression model. The second part of the talk proposes a new one-shot distributed learning algorithm through refitting Bootstrap samples from local models, which we refer to as ReBoot. Given that the full sample is split into m subsamples of size n, we show that ReBoot yields bias of order (1 \/ n ^ 2) under generalized linear models. This bias rate is sharper than that of vanilla or subsampled averaging of the local MLEs. Simulation and real data analysis both demonstrate the superior statistical accuracy of ReBoot over competing methods including Communication-efficient Surrogate Likelihood (CSL) and Federated Averaging (FedAvg). \r\n\r\n\r\nZiwei Zhu is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Statistics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His research interests are federated\/distributed statistical learning, high-dimensional statistics, robust statistics, and missing data.\r\n\r\nPrior to UMich, he was a research associate at the Statistical Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, hosted by Professor Richard Samworth. Reid is currently an Artist-in-Residence at the Cranbrook Schools and is a National Board Certified Visual Arts Educator. He has received many awards, including the Kresge Arts in Detroit Visual Artist Fellowship prize and the prestigious Governor\u2019s Award for Emerging Artist. Reid\u2019s work has been exhibited in the U.S. and abroad in galleries and museums.\nKatie Grace McGowan is an interdisciplinary artist and cultural producer. She has spent her adult life teaching, making exhibitions, organizing events, and advocating for equity in the art world. Katie currently works as deputy director of Kresge Arts in Detroit.\n \nSarah Rose Sharp is a writer, photographer and multimedia artist. She writes about art and culture for a number of print and online venues. Sarah was a 2015 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow for Art Criticism and is a 2018 recipient of the Rabkin Foundation Prize. She is a guest lecturer at several universities in Southeast Michigan, has served as guest curator and juror for institutions, and has shown her work in several states and internationally. The increasing rate at which scientific knowledge is expanding should bode well for innovation. Nevertheless, new problems related to the appraisal and valuation of new ideas and inventions are inhibiting innovation. One problem is that more scientific studies fail than pass replication tests, which has led to a deep skepticism of science, billions in economic losses, funding cuts, and a weakened job market in psychology. A second problem is that patent review has slowed while patent examiner disagreement and wrongful rejections of meritorious patent applications have risen. In this exploratory study, we investigate the potential of AI and machine learning to enhance the innovation evaluation process. \r\nIn study 1, we trained an artificial intelligence model to estimate a paper\u2019s replicability using ground truth data on studies that had passed or failed manual replication tests, and then tested the model\u2019s generalizability on an extensive set of out-of-sample studies. The model predicts replicability better than the base rate of reviewers and on part with prediction markets, the best present-day method for predicting replicability. We then used the model to conduct a discipline-wide census of replicability in Psychology. The analysis covers 14,129 papers, the near universe of all papers published in Psychology journals over a 20-year period in the six major subfields of Developmental, Social, Clinical, Cognitive, Organizational, and Personality psychology. We find replicability varies by subfield, research design methods, but not institutional prestige. Further, researchers\u2019 past research records and social media strongly predict replicability; in particular, media attention predicts non-replication. \r\nIn study 2, we use new data on almost 4,000,000 U.S. patent applications, 2,000,000 EU patents, and 250,000 Canadian patents to test AI\u2019s ability to identify patentable inventions and their future citation impact. We report three key findings. First, AI accurately predicts human experts\u2019 decisions in spotting meritorious innovation at agreement levels of up to 95%, which is remarkable given the degree of variation and potential disagreement among individual patent examiners. Second, although hit patents disproportionately drive investments and innovation, current models and analysts have been unable to predict a patent\u2019s future influence. We find that AI accurately predicts an invention\u2019s future influence from application data, providing a new view of technological trajectories at the earliest time possible. Third, AI can reduce review process biases and misevaluations. Using applications that were mistakenly rejected by examiners but should have been accepted, AI model would made 47% fewer wrongful rejections. \r\nIn the case of both scientific papers and patents, AI appears to garner error-reducing information not from the application\u2019s quantified data but from its descriptive free-text, which machines quantify better than humans. Across three different experiments, using eye-tracking, partial occlusion of faces, and extraction of features from the face using a deep learning toolkit, we tested whether spectral and temporal speech information is recovered from different regions of the face. Unfortunately, the origins and phylogenetic relationships of several groups are often obscure because (i) early fossils tend to be rare and\/or poorly preserved, (ii) few early-splitting branches have left living descendants, (iii) intermediate forms are scarce, and (iv) there is a considerable collection bias towards fossil-rich deposits in modern mid-to-high latitudes. Such biases affect the ways that major spatio-temporal, phylogenetic, and evolutionary questions are addressed. Can we predict the occurrence of evolutionary novelties based on phylogenetic relationships? Do similar forms correlate with similar function, biology, and ecology? What role have mega-diverse areas, like the tropics, played in the emergence of different groups through time?\r\n\r\nIn this talk I will present new fossils and fossil-rich localities with exceptional preservation of marine invertebrates from the Cretaceous of the Neotropics. These tropical Konservat-Lagerst\u00e4tten give us access to larval, juvenile, and adult organisms, preserving in great detail soft to lightly-biomineralized tissues such as guts, muscles, sexual organs, antennae, mouthparts, gills, eyes, and neural tissues. Such features\u2014seldom preserved in the fossil record\u2014are crucial to assess the phylogenetic relationships across extinct and extant groups, and to investigate the evolution of key traits leading to the emergence of novel forms. We systematically study the generation and scaling of such rings utilizing a numerical platform involving a shock passing through an interface separating two dissimilar fluids along which there is a hole filled with the heavier fluid. As the shock passes through the interface, it deposits baroclinic vorticity that induces a complex phase inversion process ultimately resulting in the ejection of a ring from the hole. By modulating the aspect ratio of the hole, the amount of vorticity in the flow available to the ring is controlled. Based on the aspect ratio of the ring, we find that two distinct flow regimes emerge. For small aspect ratios, a single ring is generated that contains the majority of the vorticity deposited by the shock. Beyond a critical hole aspect ratio, however, the circulation of the ejected ring saturates, and the additional vorticity in the flow accumulates in a jet that trails the leading ring.
