SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beautiful By Night
DESCRIPTION:Artist James Hosking lived in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood from 2010 to 2018\, during which time he developed the *Beautiful By Night* photo series and documentary film. The work is about the veteran drag performers at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge\, a small bar that has had an outsized influence on San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community for more than twenty years. Sadly\, it is now the last gay bar in the area. The project captures the performers Donna Personna\, Olivia Hart\, and Collette LeGrande as they transform at home\, backstage\, and onstage. It is a candid exploration of aging\, identity\, and labor.\n\nSpecial Evening Viewing with James Hosking in Conversation with Curator Amanda Krugliak with pop-up performances by *Beautiful By Night *protagonists Olivia Hart and Donna Personna Thursday\, January 13\, 6:45pm-8pm.\n\nFor complete details\, visit https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/gallery/current-exhibitions/james-hosking.html.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:What has the Pandemic Taught Us About the American System of Health Insurance?
DESCRIPTION:Health insurance in the U.S. comes from many different public and private sources. This talk will consider how the coronavirus has illuminated the weaknesses (and one surprising strength) of our decentralized approach to courage.\n\nDr. Helen Levy is a Research Professor in the Department of Health Management and Policy\; she is also a Research Professor at the Institute for Social Research and the Ford School of Public Policy. She is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Before coming to the University of Michigan she was an Assistant Professor at the Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Scholar in Health Policy Research at the University of California at Berkeley. In 2010 - 2011\, Dr. Levy served as a Senior Economist to the President’s Council of Economic Advisers in Washington\, DC. \n\nDr. Levy’s research interests include the causes and consequences of lacking health insurance\, evaluation of public health insurance programs\, and the role of health literacy in explaining disparities in health outcomes. She is a co-Investigator on the Health and Retirement Study\, a long-running longitudinal study of health and economic dynamics at older ages. She is currently the recipient of a Career Development Award from the National Institute on Aging to study health literacy and health disparities among the elderly.\n\nThis is the first of five lectures to be presented once each month from February through June of 2022. A new series will start in September 2022.The next lecture in the current series will take place March 8\, 2022.The title is: The Dagger in the Heart of Christianity. SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium (619 Presentation) - Vulnerable for addiction-like behavior: Disrupted cholinergic signaling and (neuro)immune response in sign-tracking rats
DESCRIPTION:Some rats (sign-trackers\; STs) are prone to attribute incentive salience to reward cues\, which can manifest as a propensity to approach and contact Pavlovian cues\, and for addiction-like behavior. STs also exhibit poor attentional performance\, relative to their counterparts\, the goal-trackers (GTs)\, mediated by attenuated cholinergic activity. Poor cholinergic-attentional control contributes to the propensity of STs to approach and utilize Pavlovian drug cues. In STs\, increases in neuronal activity fail to translocate choline transporters (CHTs) into synaptosomal plasma membrane\, thereby limiting the capacity of cholinergic terminals to sustain cholinergic activity. Here we investigated post-translational modifications responsible for disrupted CHT trafficking in STs\, and the hypothesis that attenuated cholinergic activity in STs causes exaggerated (neuro)immune responses. We determined levels of ubiquitinylated CHTs because ubiquitin-mediated processes can account for attenuated externalization of intracellular CHTs\, ranging from proteolysis to enhanced internalization or alternative compartmentalization. The proportion of ubiquitinylated CHTs\, extracted from cortex and striatum\, was robustly higher in STs than in GTs\, with no overlap in the data from the two phenotypes. Moreover\, modified CHTs located in intracellular domains\, but not in synaptosomal plasma membrane\, completely accounted for the phenotype-specific ubiquitylation levels. Ongoing experiments suggest elevated spleen levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in unchallenged STs. Following a systemic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) immune challenge\, brain levels of certain cytokines were not elevated based on phenotype. Moreover\, following LPS challenge\, ubiquitinylation levels of CHTs from the cortex and striatum were drastically increased in GTs\, but not STs\, suggesting that in unchallenged STs\, ubiquitinylated CHTs already are at maximum levels and unresponsive to an additional immune challenge. Together\, this evidence supports potentially escalating\, bidirectional interactions between disrupted cholinergic signaling and (neuro)immune responses as an integral component of the cognitive-motivational trait indexed by sign-tracking.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CANCELED - LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Reincarnations of Power Amongst the Mongols: From Möngke Tengri to the Śiditü Lama
DESCRIPTION:Note: The talk by Sangseraima Ujeed\, originally scheduled for February 8\, 2022\, will be rescheduled for a different date.\n\nTo date\, the historical Tibeto-Mongolian symbiosis has been analyzed from the perspective of Tibeto-centric or China-centric political histories. In this talk\, Dr. Ujeed reexamines the religio-cultural developments of Buddhism and Buddhist identity amongst the Mongols from the Mongol Empire through to the Qing period. As well as revisiting well-known religio-historical works\, her main case studies are extracted from newly obtained Mongolian and Tibetan language Buddhist biographies\, religious histories\, and records of received teachings from the early modern period. Collectively\, these case studies will demonstrate how the Mongols engagement with Tibetan Buddhism was fundamental for the dissemination and development of the wider Tibetan Buddhist tradition far beyond the realms on the steppe.\n \n Sangseraima Ujeed\, Assistant Professor of Tibetan Buddhism\, University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, received her MSt and DPhil degrees in Oriental Studies from the Department of Tibetan and Himalayan Studies\, Faculty of Oriental Studies\, University of Oxford. Her main research focus is the trans-national\, trans-regional\, and cross-cultural aspects of Buddhism\, lineage\, translation\, monastic and reincarnation networks\, and identity in Tibet and Mongolia in the Early Modern period\, with a particular emphasis on the contributions made by ethnically Mongolian monk scholars.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Two Spectacles\, Two Crowds: A Dialogue on Zhang Yimou’s Olympic Ceremonies\, 2008 and 2022
DESCRIPTION:Note: The talk by Sangseraima Ujeed\, originally scheduled for February 8\, 2022\, will be rescheduled for a different date.\n\nBeijing’s 2008 Olympic Opening Ceremonies still boast the largest live audience in history: a TV crowd of some 2 billion people. This also makes the event one of the most widely misunderstood pieces of political theater in our time. Drawing from his shifting career as international laureate and state artist\, director Zhang Yimou put together a double act for a double audience. In this discussion with Ann Lin\, LRCCS Director\, Dr. Osgood will discuss the legacy of Zhang Yimou’s historic show and the significance of its 2022 sequel.\n\nRegistration for this Zoom webinar is here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_PmIUlkESQLKdLgqTFwregQ\n\nMiles Osgood is a Lecturer at Stanford University whose research focuses on the intersections between international sports\, world literature\, and the arts. His work on the Olympics has appeared in The Washington Post\, n+1\, and Public Books\, with an article forthcoming in Modernism/modernity. He is currently writing a book about the Cultural Olympiad of 1968 in Mexico City\, provisionally titled The Artist’s Torch. His recent article about the 2008 Olympics Opening Ceremony appeared in Slate: https://slate.com/culture/2022/02/2008-beijing-olympics-opening-ceremony-zhang-yimou-meaning.html

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Distinguished University Professorship Lectures
DESCRIPTION:The Distinguished University Professorships recognize senior faculty with exceptional scholarly and/or creative achievements\, national and international reputations for academic excellence\, and superior records of teaching\, mentoring\, and service. At this virtual event\, three recipients will present on their career work and answer audience questions.\nSpeakers\nNancy G. Love\, JoAnn Silverstein Distinguished University Professor of Environmental Engineering\, Borchardt and Glysson Collegiate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering\, College of Engineering\nNancy G. Love has advised over 70 graduate students and postdoctoral research associates. In collaboration with her students\, Love works at the interface of water\, infrastructure\, and public health in both domestic and global settings. The group advances public and environmental health using chemical\, biological\, and computational approaches applied to water systems\, and translates fundamental understanding into practical solutions in partnership with communities. She has co-authored over 125 peer reviewed papers\, chapters\, and reports\; over 275 conference presentations\; and a textbook on biological wastewater treatment. Love has held leadership positions in multiple organizations\, including with the Water Environment Federation (WEF)\, the International Water Association (IWA)\, and the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP). She is a fellow of all three organizations. Love is a licensed professional engineer (P.E.) in the state of Michigan and a Board Certified Environmental Engineer (BCEE).\n“Moving Outside the Fence: Achieving Sustainable and Equitable Access to High Quality Water Services”\nThis talk will focus on Love’s career-long emphasis on the effectiveness and limitations of water treatment approaches used to provide high quality drinking water and sanitation services in both the U.S. and in the urban settings of low income countries. Her group uses both advanced biological and chemical methods to understand how well existing or developing water treatment technologies are performing and how they meet water quality and sustainability goals. However\, the most innovative and functional solutions that create sustainable and equitable water system services require social-technical approaches. To do this\, stakeholders and other partners must be deeply engaged in the work from the beginning\, most studies will be conducted outside of university labs\, and our research team members must develop robust science communication skills in addition to their deep scientific and engineering know-how. Love will trace how this transformation has occurred over her career and how the water technology approaches we have worked on address sustainability and equity more broadly.\n \nArthur Lupia\, Gerald R. Ford Distinguished University Professor of Political Science\, Professor of Political Science\, College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\nArthur Lupia’s research examines how people make decisions when they lack information. His areas of expertise include information processing\, coalition building\, and strategic communication. He has led or worked with a wide range of scientific and public organizations to improve quality of life through better management strategies and more effective communication. He is a member of the National Academy of Science\, Engineering and Medicine’s Strategic Council for Research Excellence\, Integrity\, and Trust. He was co-chair of the Subcommittee on Open Science for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (2019-2021) and Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation (2018-2022)\, where he developed new ways for NSF to better serve the nation. Lupia’s professional honors include the National Academy of Science’s Award for Innovation in Research (1998)\, and being named a Guggenheim Fellow (2007)\, and an Andrew Carnegie Fellow (2015). He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2007) and an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2004). At the University of Michigan\, he won the President’s Award for Public Impact (2017) and the Individual Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education (2014). His Ph.D. is from the California Institute of Technology (1991) and he has been a proud U-M faculty member since 2001.\n“The Public Value of Science in an Era of Misinformation”\nAs individuals\, communities\, and nations\, our quality of life depends on our ability to base decisions on reliable information. While the emergence of new forms of mass communication increases opportunities for sharing information\, it also creates new opportunities to spread misinformation. In this lecture\, Lupia describes opportunities and challenges for people who seek to help others use science to improve quality of life for themselves and others.\n \nDonald R. Zak\, Alexander H. Smith Distinguished University Professor of Ecology\, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor\, School for Environment and Sustainability\, and Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\nDonald R. Zak served as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Ecology\, Evolution and Behavior at the University of Minnesota in 1988. His research has elucidated connections between the composition and function of soil microbial communities and the importance of microbial activity in regulating ecosystem-level processes\, especially in response to global environmental change. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications\, and has mentored 11 postdoctoral scholars\, 14 doctoral students\, 21 master’s students\, and 6 undergraduate honors students. Zak has been appointed to the editorial boards of Ecology\, Ecological Monographs\, Ecological Applications\, and Soil Science Society of America Journal\, and he is currently principal investigator on grants from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy. He was named the Francis Clark Distinguished Lecturer in 2010\, an award given by the Soil Science Society of American for research excellence. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science\, as well as the Ecological Society of America\, for outstanding contributions to the fields of terrestrial and microbial ecology.\n“Soil Microbial Communities and the Future Functioning of Terrestrial Ecosystems”\nMicroorganisms mediate an array of biochemical processes in soil\, interact with one another in a biologically diverse community and\, in turn\, mediate biogeochemical cycles that are of global importance. Understanding how composition and function are linked in soil microbial communities remains a contemporary challenge and developing this understanding can reveal the molecular mechanisms underlying many biogeochemical processes. In this presentation\, Zak will discuss how microbial community function can be contingent on community composition and the potential implications of this relationship on the future functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. Further\, Zak will discuss the ways in which a changing environment can modify the ecological constraints on soil microbial communities\, the compositional and functional responses that result\, and identify gaps in our knowledge of soil microbial communities that limit our ability to anticipate the response of biogeochemical cycles to global environmental change.\nRegister for this event. A livestream link will be provided to those who register to attend virtually.

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:In Contempt: Defending Free Speech\, Defeating HUAC
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the launch of Ed Yellin and Jean Fagan Yellin’s book\, \"In Contempt: Defending Free Speech\, Defeating HUAC\,\" with a virtual panel discussion by Julie Herrada\, U-M Library curator of the Joseph A. Labadie Collection\; Howard Brick\, U-M Louis Evans Professor of History\; Erin Ramamurthy\, assistant United States attorney\; and Benjamin Mitchell-Yellin\, associate professor of philosophy at Sam Houston State University and the authors' grandson. Register to receive a Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/RWWPk\n\nThe Yellin family\, which included three young children\, faced a decade of hardship in the 1950s and 60s when they faced the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). The repressive weight of the U.S. government\, caught up in the throes of McCarthyism\, crashed down upon their careers\, their daily household budget\, and their relationships to colleagues\, neighbors\, and their country.\n\nThe authors drew heavily upon materials that are now part of the Labadie Collection for the book\; an online finding aid for the collection will be available soon.\n\nPresented by the U-M Library's Special Collections Research Center and Michigan Publishing.

SUMMARY:Other:Modeling Enzymatic Reactivity with Copper Coordination Complexes
DESCRIPTION:Synthetic models of enzyme intermediates play an important role in evaluating mechanistic hypotheses for critical biochemical reactions. In the first part of my talk\, I will present the synthesis of dicopper coordination complexes as models to understand the reactivity of NO and NO2- at copper enzymes. We discovered that dicopper complex could activate NO or nitrite to generate a unique dicopper (II\,III) oxo nitrosyl species [Cu2(μ-O)(μ-NO)]2+\, which exhibits oxidative and nitrosative reactivity. This new mode of reactivity has important implications in how Nature employs NO and nitrite as electron acceptors for hydrocarbon oxidation. In the second part of my talk\, I will discuss how synthetic models of monocopper oxygenases can be applied in the synthesis of pharmaceutically relevant organic molecules. Inspired by lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases\, we develop a general Cu(II)/Cu(III) platform to activate simple nucleophiles (Nu) toward C-H functionalization. Oxidation of Cu(II)-Nu to Cu(III)-Nu endows the Nu moiety with hydrogen atom transfer and radical capture reactivity. Building on this platform\, we have established a catalytic C-H fluorination method that selectively produces monofluorinated products in an undivided electrochemical cell at room temperature. \n \nShiyu Zhang (Ohio State University)

SUMMARY:Presentation:NII Speaker Series: Mapping the little brain with big magnets: clinical relevance and future directions
DESCRIPTION:Human cerebellar cortex\, with ~ 80% of the surface area of the cerebral cortex\, is anatomically linked with multiple sensory\, motor\, association\, and paralimbic cerebral cortical regions. The majority of fibers that exit cerebellar cortex synapse in dentate nuclei (DN) before reaching extracerebellar structures such as cerebral cortex\, but the functional neuroanatomy of human DN remains largely unmapped. I will address three main questions in this presentation: 1) Why is mapping the intrinsic functional architecture of the DN\, as elucidated by resting state networks\, clinically relevant? 2) How can recent technological advances in neuroimaging research (e.g.\, big magnets\, multichannel array coils and simultaneous multislice-imaging) potentiate the pace of discovery by mapping previously underexplored regions of the cerebellum? 3) What are the future directions\, which can unmask new predictions for basic human functional neuroanatomy and eventually help us build better tools (e.g.\, non-invasive cerebellar stimulation) to serve our patients better? In addition to reviewing the foundational aspects of the neuropsychiatry of the cerebellum\, I will present results from our recent work investigating cerebellar function and dysfunction in autism spectrum disorder\, major depressive disorder\, anxiety disorders and psychosis

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Human Habitat Experience | Climate change\, disasters\, and migration systems: A research agenda
DESCRIPTION:While weather-related disasters happen regularly\, protective infrastructure and building codes usually prevent population loss. Hurricane Katrina’s devastating effects on New Orleans’ levee system and the built environment in other coastline communities in the Gulf of Mexico in 2005 is the exception that proves this rule. Or is it? Empirical studies of hurricane exposure and county-level population change show heterogeneous patterns of post-hurricane population trends. This presentation reviews research on this topic using the weather and population data currently available\, and then considers the data and methods that would allow us to answer key questions about disaster-related migration in the US. Specifically\, which disasters produce out-migration responses? Where have residents who migrated from disaster-affected places resettle? How do migration systems help us predict post-disaster residential mobility? Which types of residents are most likely to move from disaster-affected places? A transdisciplinary and community-engaged research team is necessary to effectively pursue this research agenda and use that knowledge to prepare for and protect against disaster impacts.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Nam Center Colloquium Series | The Cost of Belonging: An Ethnography of Solidarity and Mobility in Beijing’s Koreatown
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This session is planned to be held virtually EST through Zoom. This webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email.\n \n Register at: https://myumi.ch/517Dp\n\nCo-sponsored by the Department of Sociology.\n \n In the past ten years\, China has rapidly emerged as South Korea’s most important economic partner. With the surge of goods and resources between the two countries\, large waves of Korean migrants have opened small ethnic firms in Beijing’s Koreatown\, turning a once barren wasteland into one of the largest Korean enclaves in the world. The Cost of Belonging: An Ethnography of Solidarity and Mobility in Beijing’s Koreatown is an in-depth ethnographic study that investigates how Korean Chinese cultural brokers\, South Korean entrepreneurs\, and South Korean expats negotiate their class and ethnic identities in their everyday lives in the enclave.\n \n The book engages with the growing literature on diasporic Koreans who have started to form stronger transnational ties with South Korea following the government’s efforts to build a more global Korean polity as a strategy to galvanize its faltering economy in the late 1990s. It diverges from past studies of the Korean diaspora\, however\, by stressing the role of corporate interests and multinational firms in shaping not only inequality on a global scale\, but also notions of ethnic belonging in overseas communities. The book argues that the power of the chaebol extends far beyond shaping labor relations and income inequality. South Korean conglomerates are powerful precisely because they shape spaces of interaction\, and have privileged access to the moral and cultural resources that mold how Koreans view and negotiate their identities. Along these lines\, The Cost of Belonging demonstrates the persisting impact that physical spaces have in shaping the social and economic lives of migrants in this global era.\n \n Sharon J. Yoon is Assistant Professor of Korean Studies at the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies in the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame. She received her Ph.D. in sociology from Princeton University and is an ethnographer who has conducted in-depth fieldwork in Korean diasporic communities in Seoul\, Beijing\, and Osaka. Prior to joining the faculty at Notre Dame\, Yoon was a Korea Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the James Joo-Jin Kim Center for Korean Studies at the University of Pennsylvania\, a Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow at the Graduate School of Human Sciences at Osaka University\, and an assistant professor in the Department of Korean Studies at the Graduate School of International Studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the Blakemore-Freeman Foundation\, and her work has been published with the International Journal of Sociology\, Korea Observer\, Korean Journal of Sociology\, Journal of Contemporary Asia\, and Politics and Society. In addition to her academic research\, she has worked with think-tanks such as the Korea Economic Institute and the Asan Institute for Policy Studies\, as well as local grassroots organizations in Asia.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
