SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CBSSM Seminar- Laila Gharzai\, MD\, LLM
DESCRIPTION:Financial toxicity has a substantial impact on patients undergoing cancer treatment. Strategies to mitigate this complex problem have found challenges in facing its multifaceted nature. As a postdoctoral research fellow at CBSSM\, I performed a qualitative study of patients who experienced financial toxicity during cancer treatment in order to contextualize their experience within an existing framework for understanding financial toxicity. This enabled identification of a novel theme impacting the experience of financial toxicity\, and led us to identify four major areas where additional work is needed to mitigate financial toxicity. This work will be placed in context of drivers and other mitigation efforts in financial toxicity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beautiful By Night
DESCRIPTION:Artist James Hosking lived in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood from 2010 to 2018\, during which time he developed the *Beautiful By Night* photo series and documentary film. The work is about the veteran drag performers at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge\, a small bar that has had an outsized influence on San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community for more than twenty years. Sadly\, it is now the last gay bar in the area. The project captures the performers Donna Personna\, Olivia Hart\, and Collette LeGrande as they transform at home\, backstage\, and onstage. It is a candid exploration of aging\, identity\, and labor.\n\nSpecial Evening Viewing with James Hosking in Conversation with Curator Amanda Krugliak with pop-up performances by *Beautiful By Night *protagonists Olivia Hart and Donna Personna Thursday\, January 13\, 6:45pm-8pm.\n\nFor complete details\, visit https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/gallery/current-exhibitions/james-hosking.html.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Sequence Analysis for Social Science
DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we kick off a new season of PDHP workshops\, with a workshop entitled “Sequence Analysis for Social Science”\, presented by Anette E. Fasang (Humboldt Universität zu Berlin) and Emanuela Struffolino (University of Milan). Sequence analysis\, originally developed in biology to analyze strings of DNA\, has attracted increasing attention in the social sciences as a key tool for using longitudinal data to analyze life course processes\, including labor market careers\, transitions to adulthood\, and family formation. This workshop covers the theoretical foundation of sequence analysis\, basic descriptive tools\, as well as the general work-flow of sequence analysis. Hands-on examples using R will demonstrate the basic analytical steps using illustrative data on family and labor market trajectories.\n\nTopics include:\n-The theoretical foundation of sequence analysis in the social sciences\n-Making informed choices when compiling sequences from a longitudinal dataset\n-Description and visualization of sequences using R\n-Using output from sequence analysis (e.g. distance matrices\, measures of complexity) in further basic analysis (such as cluster analysis or regression).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Engineering for social good? Understanding and challenging barriers to socially-informed engineering practice
DESCRIPTION:Engineering training has long been characterized by the primacy of technical considerations. In recent years\, there have been increasing calls for engineers to better account for social and contextual dimensions of their work\, in addition to the technical\, in order to adequately address the complex challenges of our modern society. However\, the field has been slow to change. In this seminar\, I will present findings from a study that explores how a narrowly technical focus of engineering work may be perpetuated through day-to-day engineering training and practice. Findings from this study also highlight how emphasized forms of engineering practice (mis)align with engineers’ personal values and interests and I will discuss the potential implications of this (mis)alignment for how engineers view the field and their place within it. In addition\, I will discuss several current collaborative research efforts that relate to this work: one focused on characterizing curricular messaging in two engineering departments and the implications of this messaging for students’ sense of fit and career intentions in their fields and another focused on understanding the adoption and impacts of a toolkit aimed at providing students with the skills to identify and address socially engaged aspects of engineering work.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Brian M. Wells and Hani Zainulbhai - Using a Web Diary Survey to Measure Out-of-Home Media Consumption and Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Brian M. Wells is a Senior Data Scientist at Nielsen where he works on a variety of quantitative projects to evaluate\, improve\, and expand Nielsen panels. Previously he served as the Data Quality and Survey Methodology Manager for the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) where he evaluated the need for and implemented a new data collection methodology. Brian received his PhD in Survey Methodology from the University of Michigan. \n\nHani Zainulbhai is a Senior Data Scientist at Nielsen and a 2018 MPSM graduate. At Nielsen\, she has been involved in developing alternative recruitment methods for the TV audience measurement panel.\n\nUsing a Web Diary Survey to Measure Out-of-Home Media Consumption and Engagement\n\nDimensions of out-of-home (OOH) media measurement rely on human input and cannot be fully captured through passive data collection via smart devices or portable meters. To better understand OOH TV consumption\, we designed a web-based diary survey to capture the various components of OOH TV consumption while trying to minimize recall bias\, especially for brief\, unanticipated viewings. The study consisted of two parts: a Recruitment phase and a Diary phase. During the Recruitment phase\, selected panelists from a nationally representative sample completed a short survey and were asked to participate in the 7-day diary. Those who agreed were enrolled in the Diary and were asked to complete a once-daily diary\, logging all their OOH activity and TV consumption. The surveys were conducted over four weeks from mid-October to mid-November 2021\, with each week having an independent and representative sample covering a different 7-day period. This presentation will provide an overview of the methodology and process used to administer the Recruitment and Diary surveys\, including sample design\, recruitment procedures\, web-based diary survey design\, and participation and response rates for each survey. In addition\, we will discuss the results of a questionnaire experiment exploring differences between the concepts of attention to and engagement with media. A random half-sample was assigned questions about either “attention” or “engagement” to each program viewed. Within each half-sample\, we also randomly assigned each respondent to an ascending or a descending response order condition to observe if there is any primacy effect due to collection in a self-administered mode. Preliminary results show differences in the distributions for attention and engagement implying some differentiation in how respondents perceive these two measures. In addition\, the direction of the response order seems to alter the response distribution for attention but not for engagement.

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Exploring and engineering emergent quantum phenomena with diamond spin qubits\n
DESCRIPTION:Zoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/94692610056\n\nA system assembled out of many quantum building blocks can display complex collective behaviors that are unexpected from those of individual elements. Elucidating such emergent quantum phenomena is a frontier science\, while engineering and control of these phenomena enable future quantum technologies. Can we gain mastery over emergent quantum phenomena across vastly different scales leading to novel utility? In this talk\, I will demonstrate that one can address this question using tools enabled by highly coherent and controllable spin qubits hosted by nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. As a top-down approach\, quantum sensors realized with NVs provide a powerful tool to unlock emergent phenomena on the macroscopic scales in quantum materials. To illustrate the power of this approach\, I will present our results on the discovery of viscous Poiseuille flow of quantum-critical Dirac fluid in graphene [1]. I will also discuss the development of a nanoscale probe of magnons [2] – collective spin excitations – and the study of room-temperature ferromagnetism in 2D magnets [3]. For a bottom-up approach\, NV qubits provide a versatile platform to engineer complex quantum phenomena qubit by qubit. To pave the foundation of this effort\, we have developed a novel scheme to tune the dipolar coupling between NV qubits via dressed state control [4]. Enabled by these results\, I will outline future directions to 1) study emergent phenomena in quantum materials\, 2) investigate complex quantum behaviors using diamond quantum simulator\, and 3) study emergent properties of magnon-spin qubit hybrid quantum system.\n\n[1] M.J.H.
