SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beautiful By Night
DESCRIPTION:Artist James Hosking lived in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood from 2010 to 2018\, during which time he developed the *Beautiful By Night* photo series and documentary film. The work is about the veteran drag performers at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge\, a small bar that has had an outsized influence on San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community for more than twenty years. Sadly\, it is now the last gay bar in the area. The project captures the performers Donna Personna\, Olivia Hart\, and Collette LeGrande as they transform at home\, backstage\, and onstage. It is a candid exploration of aging\, identity\, and labor.\n\nSpecial Evening Viewing with James Hosking in Conversation with Curator Amanda Krugliak with pop-up performances by *Beautiful By Night *protagonists Olivia Hart and Donna Personna Thursday\, January 13\, 6:45pm-8pm.\n\nFor complete details\, visit https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/gallery/current-exhibitions/james-hosking.html.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Complex Systems Seminar | Markov genealogy processes for exact phylodynamic inference
DESCRIPTION:THIS WILL BE A HYBRID SEMINAR \nWEISER HALL ROOM 747 (limit 30\, mask required)\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96616169868 Passcode: CSCS\n\nAbstract: We describe an approach to phylodynamics that unifies and extends existing likelihood-based methods for extracting information from virus genealogies to parameterize pathogen transmission models. While existing methods rely on approximations that are often violated in practice\, our approach yields exact expressions for the likelihood. Specifically\, we introduce a class of genealogy-valued Markov processes\, induced by population-scale transmission models and show how these lead to a nonlinear filtering equation. The theory is mathematically rigorous and leads directly to computationally efficient inference algorithms.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Carrying the Torch
DESCRIPTION:Fire has profoundly influenced ecosystems across the planet. It is a natural phenomenon borne of lightning\, but it is also a cultural one carried in the hands of human beings. As the singular species with the ability to harness fire\, it has played a fundamental role in our own evolutionary history and that of the environments we inhabit. We have expanded the natural range of fire as we have expanded our own\, introducing it to areas not commonly ignited by nature’s lightning and in doing so co-authoring ancient evolutionary pressures that have kindled remarkable diversity in landscapes and ecosystems.\n\nSouthern Michigan was once a dynamic mosaic of prairies and open savannahs bearing little resemblance to the landscape of today. Sustained and shaped by frequent fire\, these rich ecosystems formed a peninsula of grasslands extending millions of acres across the southern half of the state. Today\, less than 0.01% of these fire-dependent ecosystems remain\, reduced to remnants over a remarkably short 200-year window during which time fire suppression replaced a vital culture of burning by the region’s indigenous people. Without regular fire\, deeply shaded forests overtook savannahs and prairies\, obscuring the memory of a land once dominated by grasslands and the flames that created them. As diverse communities of fire adapted species decline and are replaced by others whose evolutionary mechanisms perpetuate pyric aversion\, fire itself is less and less capable of re-entering the landscape the longer it is absent. The window for action grows smaller each passing year. \n\nCarrying the Torch explores the unique fire ecology of southern Michigan through the visual arts\, probing its rich history\, examining its critical ecological mechanisms\, and drawing into focus the conflicting cultural ethos surrounding fire on the landscape. Encouraging viewers to consider prescribed fire today as the continuation of a practice dating back to the very emergence of our species\, it suggests through the presentation of the scientific evidence that to inhabit the prairie peninsula of southern Michigan is to be a mutualist with fire\, a carrier of the torch.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IISS Lecture Series. The Spatial Rationality of Ibn Taymiyya’s Rejection of God’s Incorporeality
DESCRIPTION:The IISS is pleased to announce a new lecture with Professor Jon Hoover. In his lecture\, Prof. Hoover will discuss the theological views of well-known and controversial Muslim thinker Ibn Taymiyya (d. 728/1328).\n \n Abstract:\n \n Ibn Taymiyya’s (d. 728/1328) well known Hamawiyya fatwa\, a refutation of Ash‘ari interpretations of God’s attributes\, led to accusations of corporealism (tajsim) in 1298 and then his trials and imprisonment under the Mamluk authorities in 1306. The Ash‘arism of the time denied the plain sense of texts indicating anthropomorphic features of God like sitting on the Throne\, and then either ceased thinking about them (tafwid) or reinterpreted them metaphorically (ta’wil). In his Hamawiyya fatwa\, Ibn Taymiyya criticizes this Ash‘ari hermeneutic for stripping God of his attributes\, and he identifies the Ta’sis al-taqdis of Ash‘ari theologian Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (d. 606/1210) as a prominent book expounding erroneous reinterpretations. Ibn Taymiyya adds that he has proofs from both reason and scripture for his views but that a fatwa is not the place to present them. Ibn Taymiyya eventually provides his proofs from reason in his massive Bayan talbis al-Jahmiyya written in 1306 or 1307. In Bayan Ibn Taymiyya refutes al-Razi’s arguments in Ta’sis al-Taqdis that God is not corporeal or spatially extended\, as well as al-Razi’s reinterpretations of anthropomorphic texts in the Qur’an and the Sunna. This paper will examine Ibn Taymiyya’s key rational arguments against al-Razi in Bayan and explore how Ibn Taymiyya reconceptualizes God’s spatial relation to the world by drawing on Ibn Rushd’s Aristotelian notion of place as the inner surface of the containing body. This will show that Ibn Taymiyya envisions God as a very large indivisible and spatially extended being surrounding the universe.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Towards Quantum Optics with Rydberg Excitons
DESCRIPTION:Zoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/92167928842\n\nRydberg excitons have only recently been discovered. They are highly-excited\, bound electron-hole pairs that represent giant atom-like quasiparticles in a semiconductor environment. These new particles defy conventional theories of exciton physics and open fundamentally new regimes for quantum optics with excitons.\n\nHere\, I will show how their remarkable properties originate from strong\, long-range polarization forces acting between pairs of such states over thousands of crystal cells\, suggesting great potential for optical applications. We develop a semi-analytical cluster-expansion theory to describe the enormous optical nonlinearity of the Rydberg interactive many-body system\, revealing the effect of a residual thin electron-hole plasma and bringing our theory into quantitative agreement with corresponding experiments.\n \nHowever\, strong phonon coupling and inter-band dynamics can complicate this simple atom-like picture and limit the usability of Rydberg-Rydberg interactions for optical applications. Using experiments with cuprous oxide as an example\, I will discuss the origins of phonon coupling and how the formation of an optical dark state can be used to mitigate its undesired effects. Finally\, I will describe ongoing efforts to exploit strong Rydberg interactions of excitons in monolayered semiconductors for the creation of nonclassical light. Our results open the stage for physics with strongly interacting polaritons in the solid state\, making it possible to induce nonlinear processes at the level of individual photons.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSA Honors Stowe Lecture Series Presents: Jane Coaston
DESCRIPTION:Please join the LSA Honors Program on Tuesday\, February 15 at 5:00 pm (EST) in the Rackham Amphitheater. \n\n \n\nPolarized America: Lessons from Sports\n\nThe polarization of American politics isn't new (remember the Civil War?)\, but the ways in which our culture\, media\, and perceptions of one another have become increasingly siloed is. Despite an increasingly national (and international) culture\, it's easy to stay within our own political\, social\, economic and cultural box. But sports can cut across siloes in unexpected ways (while creating new ones). So what can sports teach us about how to depolarize America -- or\, does sports tell us that depolarization is not an option? New York Times podcast host\, writer and Very Online sports person Jane Coaston will try to explain.\n\nJane Coaston is the host of \"The Argument.\" Previously\, she was a senior politics reporter at Vox with a focus on conservatism and the GOP. Her work has appeared on MSNBC\, CNN\, NPR\, and in National Review\, the Washington Post\, the Ringer\, and ESPN Magazine\, among others. In addition\, she is a former resident fellow at the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics. She attended the University of Michigan and lives in Washington\, D.C.\n\n \n\nInterested in attending in person? SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Food Literacy for All:“How the Other Half Eats: the Untold Story of Food and Inequality in America”
DESCRIPTION:Talk Description: Inequality in America manifests in many ways\, but perhaps nowhere more than in how we eat. In this virtual presentation\, sociologist and ethnographer Priya Fielding-Singh draws on her years of field research to bring us into the kitchens of dozens of families to explore how—and why—we eat the way we do. At the heart of Fielding-Singh's talk will be covering her powerful and timely new book\, How the Other Half Eats: the Untold Story of Food and Inequality in America. The book unpacks nutritional inequality in America through an examination of class\, race and health\, intimately following four families across the income spectrum in an exploration of the meaning of food itself. By diving into the nuances of these families’ lives\, Fielding-Singh lays bare the limits of efforts narrowly focused on improving families’ diets through increasing their access to healthy food. Instead\, she reveals how being rich or poor in America impacts something even more fundamental than the food families can afford: these experiences impact the very meaning of food itself.\n\nFood Literacy for All: Launched in 2017\, Food Literacy for All is a community-academic partnership course based at the University of Michigan. Structured as an evening lecture series\, Food Literacy for All features different guest speakers each week to address challenges and opportunities of diverse food systems. \n\nThe course is free and open to the public. The 2022 course is virtual on Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm EST.\n\nFood Literacy 2022 Registration: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_0TGY1FaMRMSW2VzuP2pPDQ
