SUMMARY:Exhibition:Carrying the Torch
DESCRIPTION:Fire has profoundly influenced ecosystems across the planet. It is a natural phenomenon borne of lightning\, but it is also a cultural one carried in the hands of human beings. As the singular species with the ability to harness fire\, it has played a fundamental role in our own evolutionary history and that of the environments we inhabit. We have expanded the natural range of fire as we have expanded our own\, introducing it to areas not commonly ignited by nature’s lightning and in doing so co-authoring ancient evolutionary pressures that have kindled remarkable diversity in landscapes and ecosystems.\n\nSouthern Michigan was once a dynamic mosaic of prairies and open savannahs bearing little resemblance to the landscape of today. Sustained and shaped by frequent fire\, these rich ecosystems formed a peninsula of grasslands extending millions of acres across the southern half of the state. Today\, less than 0.01% of these fire-dependent ecosystems remain\, reduced to remnants over a remarkably short 200-year window during which time fire suppression replaced a vital culture of burning by the region’s indigenous people. Without regular fire\, deeply shaded forests overtook savannahs and prairies\, obscuring the memory of a land once dominated by grasslands and the flames that created them. As diverse communities of fire adapted species decline and are replaced by others whose evolutionary mechanisms perpetuate pyric aversion\, fire itself is less and less capable of re-entering the landscape the longer it is absent. The window for action grows smaller each passing year. \n\nCarrying the Torch explores the unique fire ecology of southern Michigan through the visual arts\, probing its rich history\, examining its critical ecological mechanisms\, and drawing into focus the conflicting cultural ethos surrounding fire on the landscape. Encouraging viewers to consider prescribed fire today as the continuation of a practice dating back to the very emergence of our species\, it suggests through the presentation of the scientific evidence that to inhabit the prairie peninsula of southern Michigan is to be a mutualist with fire\, a carrier of the torch.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

DESCRIPTION:In one of the most compelling pieces of classic theatre\, Sophocles tells the tale of Antigone\, daughter of Oedipus and sister to Eteocles and Polyneices\, former rulers of Thebes who have just battled to the death. In their absence\, their uncle Creon has ascended the throne and declared it illegal to bury the rebel Polyneices. Antigone refuses to obey Creon’s order\, setting off a tragic conflict of morality vs. law\, cruelty vs. love\, and man vs. woman. Guest Director Sam White (founder of Shakespeare in Detroit)\, who led the Theatre & Drama students in last year’s production of Romeo & Juliet\, will return to helm this production. David Mulroy\, Professor of Classics Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\, faithfully reproduces the literal meaning of Sophocles’ words while also reflecting his verbal pyrotechnics in this translation from 2013. Using fluid iambic pentameters for the spoken passages and rhyming stanzas for the songs\, it is true to the letter and the spirit of the great Greek original.\n\n**Please Note: Due to new U-M health and safety guidance\, recently updated in January 2022\, this indoor\, ticketed performance requires audience members to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative PCR Covid test within 72 hrs of the performance. DESCRIPTION:A live presentation on what to find in the sky tonight and for the coming few weeks. This presentation includes how to find the cardinal directions on your own by finding the north star\, current and upcoming constellations\, visible planets\, a few deep sky objects depending on the season\, and other interesting astronomical visualizations. \n\nThe state-of-the-art Planetarium & Dome Theater at the U-M Museum of Natural History transports visitors beyond distant stars and deep into the ocean from the comfort of reclining seats. Tickets $8. Tickets are available on the day of the show at the Museum Store.\nThe planetarium is operating at reduced capacity to maximize distancing between viewers and masks are required.

Have you ever wanted to learn about the Fool's journey? Does the Death card really mean Death? What are the ethics of telling the future? Who invented Tarot cards? Feel free to come hang out & learn with us\, & to bring your own cards if you have them! We will be learning about the history of tarot\, tarot archetypes\, and how to build a tarot practice and read for yourself and others! SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Premodern Colloquium. \"As though death should every hour approach\": Reformation Adaptations in English Women's Wills
DESCRIPTION:The wills of non-elite laywomen who lived and died in late-fifteenth and sixteenth century England provide a glimpse into their priorities\, identities\, and Reformation adaptations. From reluctant laywomen\, removed from the rhythms of religious life\nby the dissolution\, to those who spent their days living\, working\, and worshiping in the diocese of Salisbury’s varied parishes\, “everyday” women proved themselves to be capable administrators and active members of their local networks. In their wills\, they cast themselves as faithful stewards of their worldly goods\, prioritizing practical\, occupational\, and familial concerns\, occasionally hinting at ongoing religious reform. Amidst unpredictable change and persistent continuity\, non-elite laywomen were adept and adaptable\, navigating the instability and unknowns of theological\, social\, and political reform. Looking back\, usually from their final days\, they elucidated their everyday lives and left vibrant traces of themselves\, their memories\, and their experiences.

Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.*\n\nHailed by the New York Times as “one of the great soul interpreters of her generation”\, Bettye LaVette is a vocalist who can take any type of song and make it completely her own. To quote the late\, great George Jones\, \"Bettye is truly a singer's singer\".\n\nHer career began in 1962\, at the age of 16\, in Detroit\, Michigan. Her first single \"My Man - He’s a Loving Man\"\, was released on Atlantic Records. This led to tours with headliners such as Ben E. King\, Clyde McPhatter and then up-and-comer\, Otis Redding. She recorded for numerous major labels\, including Atco\, Epic\, and Motown\, over the course of the 1960s through the 1980s. She also worked alongside Charles \"Honi\" Coles and Cab Calloway in the touring company of the Toni Award winning musical\, Bubbling Brown Sugar.\n\nThe 2000's started what she calls her \"Fifth Career\". Her CD\, A Woman Like Me\, won the W.C. Handy Award in 2004 for Comeback Blues Album of the Year. She was also given a prestigious Pioneer Award by The Rhythm & Blues Foundation\, was inducted into the Detroit Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame\, given an Unsung Award by the National R&B Society\, and inducted into The Blues Hall of Fame by the Blues Foundation. She has received Blues Music Awards for Best Contemporary Female Blues Singer and Best Soul Blues Female Artist. Since 2002\, she has released 8 albums\, 5 of which have received Grammy nominations.\n\nIn 2017\, she signed with Verve Records and has since recorded 2 albums\, both of which were produced by Steve Jordan\, were critically acclaimed\, and received Grammy nominations. The first was Things Have Changed\, an album consisting of all Bob Dylan songs. Her latest\, Blackbirds\, is Bettye's homage to the Black female singers of the 1950s who came before her.\n\nFans\, critics and artists have nothing but high praise for her live show and her vocal prowess. Now\, at 75 years old and in her 59th year in show business\, she is still performing with the ferocity of a woman half her age. She is one of very few of her contemporaries who were recording during the birth of soul music in the 1960s and is still creating vital recordings today.
