SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium (619 Presentation): Processing of self-generated sounds in the auditory - perirhinal cortical circuit
DESCRIPTION:The ability to rapidly and efficiently process sensory stimuli\, and in particular sounds\, during locomotion is critical for survival and adaptive behaviour. Some incoming sounds during locomotion originate from external sources (such as the sound of a passing car) while others are self-generated (such as the sound of our own footsteps). While self-generated sounds are predictable and uninformative in some cases\, in other situations they carry rich behaviourally-relevant information\, such as the substrate we are walking on\, our locomotion speed\, and our location. Indeed\, human studies show that self-generated locomotion sounds can influence behaviour in an ongoing manner. However\, the neural mechanisms underlying the encoding\, usage\, and memory of self-generated sounds are poorly understood. To address this gap\, I have designed a novel experimental setup to simultaneously record self-generated sounds and neural activity in freely-moving rats that learn to traverse a track with varying sounds. By recording neural activity in two monosynaptically connected key brain regions for context- and memory-dependent sound processing\, the auditory cortex and the perirhinal cortex\, I aim to identify the neural mechanisms that underlie encoding and remembering behaviourally-relevant self-generated sounds.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Carrying the Torch
DESCRIPTION:Fire has profoundly influenced ecosystems across the planet. It is a natural phenomenon borne of lightning\, but it is also a cultural one carried in the hands of human beings. As the singular species with the ability to harness fire\, it has played a fundamental role in our own evolutionary history and that of the environments we inhabit. We have expanded the natural range of fire as we have expanded our own\, introducing it to areas not commonly ignited by nature’s lightning and in doing so co-authoring ancient evolutionary pressures that have kindled remarkable diversity in landscapes and ecosystems.\n\nSouthern Michigan was once a dynamic mosaic of prairies and open savannahs bearing little resemblance to the landscape of today. Sustained and shaped by frequent fire\, these rich ecosystems formed a peninsula of grasslands extending millions of acres across the southern half of the state. Today\, less than 0.01% of these fire-dependent ecosystems remain\, reduced to remnants over a remarkably short 200-year window during which time fire suppression replaced a vital culture of burning by the region’s indigenous people. Without regular fire\, deeply shaded forests overtook savannahs and prairies\, obscuring the memory of a land once dominated by grasslands and the flames that created them. As diverse communities of fire adapted species decline and are replaced by others whose evolutionary mechanisms perpetuate pyric aversion\, fire itself is less and less capable of re-entering the landscape the longer it is absent. The window for action grows smaller each passing year. \n\nCarrying the Torch explores the unique fire ecology of southern Michigan through the visual arts\, probing its rich history\, examining its critical ecological mechanisms\, and drawing into focus the conflicting cultural ethos surrounding fire on the landscape. Encouraging viewers to consider prescribed fire today as the continuation of a practice dating back to the very emergence of our species\, it suggests through the presentation of the scientific evidence that to inhabit the prairie peninsula of southern Michigan is to be a mutualist with fire\, a carrier of the torch.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Glitches in Art Historical Flow\, ca. 1750
DESCRIPTION:The history of ink painting in early modern China is often told as a history of uninterrupted lineages and seamless transmission through time. There were\, however\, passages in that history when transmission was not so certain\, and artists developed modes of painting that put under pressure teachings and standards inherited from the past. This was the case of Zheng Xie (1693-1765) whose monochrome ink orchids were conceived as a string of tiny but effective disruptions of the technical and aesthetic principles of monochrome ink painting. Focusing on Zheng Xie’s late production\, this talk explores what glitches\, errors\, and flaws tell us about mid-Qing artists’ attitudes toward the legacy of the past and the value they assigned to defective hands and imperfect tools to engage with a crumbling world.\n\nZoom webinar registration at: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Aqz73aUHScy8WtkDk28yhQ\n \n Michele Matteini is Assistant Professor at New York University. He specializes on painting and antiquarian culture of the Qing period. His book\, \"A Ghost in the City: Luo Ping and the Craft of Painting in Eighteenth-Century Beijing\" is forthcoming later this year.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Museums at Noon
DESCRIPTION:L’Internationale’s Democracy Pavilion for Europe aims to reenergize democracy as a desire and practice. It takes the arts’ potential as a starting point for imagining new epistemologies and ethics of living together within the limits of the planet. The pavilion responds to the current political moment and the fact that the idea of democracy that undergirded the post-1945 European order is in peril. Fostering open\, creative debate\, the pavilion serves as a source of inspiration to reframe art and museums as spaces for experimentation and analysis that critically engage current developments in Europe. The Democracy Pavilion is the response of L’Internationale to the European Cultural Foundation’s call to promote critical thinking and radical imagination. The panelists represent institutions affiliated with L’Internationale\, a confederation of seven European art museums from Belgium\, Spain\, the Netherlands\, Turkey\, Sweden\, Slovenia\, and Ireland. Taking the Democracy Pavilion as their core idea\, the presentations together explore new relations between arts\, heritage\, and emancipatory politics.\nRegister for webinar: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_I4gggi7aTMelYmPpRULnIw\n\nco-sponsored by the Center for European Studies

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Entrepreneurship and the entertainment industry with Yousef Ali
DESCRIPTION:Navigating today’s complex and rapidly changing music industry is a daunting task. Mythologies abound on the key steps you need to launch and sustain a music career\, but what does it really take to carve out a path that fulfills personal goals and makes the world a better place? Curated and hosted by Matthew Dear\, in collaboration with the University of Michigan EXCEL Lab\, this virtual seminar investigates those questions through the lens of five leaders who have paved unique\, transformative pathways to success. \n\nOver the course of Fall 2021\, Matthew Dear interviewed five luminaries who have carved out unique\, highly-impactful\, and innovative careers that intersect music\, entrepreneurship\, social impact\, and creative storytelling. These interviews propel through the personal stories of each guest to illuminate the complexity of finding one’s path to self-actualization\, while framing the circuitous paths that are central to nearly every successful professional arts journey today.\n\nYousef Ali\, Founder and CEO of Blast Radio\, has been a serial entrepreneur at the intersection of technology and entertainment for the last 15 years- having founded a digital strategy consultancy that serviced clients including Black Entertainment Television\, Viacom\, F.A.M.E. among many others. His first startup\, Fanclub\, re-envisioned celebrity/fan interaction through data science\, allowing top celebrities (including Lil Wayne\, Snoop Dogg\, Jeezy\, and more) to surgically identify and engage super fans. Yousef’s current venture\, Blast Radio\, creates an artist-fueled\, ephemeral\, global radio platform\, powered by a constellation of proprietary Blast Box devices that condenses a radio studio into a one button\, portable device.\n\nmore information and registration at https://myumi.ch/AwZre

Sharing your story with others…the paths\, the deviations\, the obstacles and the joys\, the large and small things that kept you going\, is both human and more importantly - could be a critical example for someone struggling with a similar situation. Understanding the choices and actions that strengthen resilience is sometimes called true grit. The realization that this was an underserved area of STEM research\, that would be important to anyone- women\, people of color\, or any socially obstructed group- who needed examples during difficult challenges\, motivated my work. We will learn what evidence supports resilience training. I will share a few stories I have heard—promising and challenging\, and the ways these individuals succeeded. Some of the common underlying themes will be discussed.\n\nPART ONE - Introduction. The first part of the workshop will be a presentation of my path and experiences. How I resolved my desire to support women in STEM by discovering and sharing stories. I will acknowledge my challenges and choices in work and family\, and share other stories of challenge and grit.\n\nPART TWO - Sharing stories. Next\, small groups of individuals will be formed. Each person\, as comfortable\, will share a story demonstrating resilience\, identifying their own support and motivations. They will then call upon each other to help solve obstacles they currently face.\n\nPART THREE - Wrap up. In a wrap-up\, each group will be asked to share one example of a resilience challenge. Participants will take away an understanding of their own motivations and “true grit”\, help someone else navigate an obstacle\, and get support for their own journey.\n\nAn integral part of the Inspire initiative is pairing advocacy\, social change\, and activism with skills that enhance a sense of well-being\, focus\, and interconnectedness. A short guided Mindfulness Meditation practice will be incorporated into the program.

SUMMARY:Other:Activity-based chemical probes for RNA modifying enzymes
DESCRIPTION:Epitranscriptomic RNA modifications can regulate RNA activity\, however there remains a major gap in our understanding of the scope of RNA chemistry present in biological systems\, the enzymes responsible for regulating modification levels\, and the ultimate function of these modifications in biological processes. To address this gap\, our group has developed RNA-mediated activity-based protein profiling (RNABPP)\, a chemoproteomic strategy relying upon metabolic RNA labeling with modified nucleoside probes\, RNA-protein enrichment\, and quantitative proteomics. This lecture will discuss the application of RNABPP with fluoropyrimidine nucleosides in human cells in order to profile diverse families of RNA modifying enzymes including m5C and m5U methyltranferases\, as well as dihydrouridine synthase (DUS) enzymes. Time allowing\, I will also discuss new developments in RNA metabolic labeling technology. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nRalph Kleiner (Princeton University)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Periodic Lattice Distortions in Low Dimensional Materials
DESCRIPTION:Dramatic electronic changes are associated with periodic lattice distortions where structure\, even in 2D materials\, requires higher dimensional measurement using scanning / transmission electron microscopy. In particular charge density waves are an emergent periodic modulation of the electron density that permeates a crystal with strong electron-lattice coupling. Strong evidence suggests that transformative correlated electron behavior may exist only in unrealized clean 2D materials such as 1T-TaS2. Unfortunately\, experiment and theory suggest that extrinsic disorder in free standing 2D layers impedes correlation-driven quantum behavior. Here we demonstrate a new route to realizing fragile 2D quantum states through epitaxial polytype engineering of van der Waals materials. The isolation of truly 2D charge density waves (CDWs) between metallic layers stabilizes commensurate long-range order and lifts the coupling between neighboring CDW layers to restore mirror symmetries via interlayer CDW twinning. The twinned-commensurate (tC-) CDW reported herein has a single metal–insulator phase transition at ~350 K as measured structurally and electronically. Fast in-situ transmission electron microscopy and scanned nanobeam diffraction map the formation of tC-CDWs. This work introduces epitaxial polytype engineering of van der Waals materials to access latent 2D ground states distinct from conventional 2D fabrication.\n\nHere we show the critical temperature for spatially-coherent\, commensurate (C-) CDW in 1T-TaS2 can be raised to well above room temperature (~150 K above the expected transition) by synthesizing clean interleaved 2D polytypic heterostructures. This stabilizes a collective insulating ground state (i.e. C-CDW) not expected to exist at room temperature. We show the formation of these spatially coherent states occurs when 2D CDWs are confined between metallic prismatic polytypes. Metallic layers screen impurity potentials to suppress the disordered nearly-commensurate (NC-CDW) phase. At the same time\, interleaving disables interlayer coupling between CDWs. This raises the critical temperature of the C-CDW and forms out-of-plane twinned commensurate (tC) CDWs as revealed by scanned nanobeam electron diffraction. These results demonstrate polytype engineering as a route to isolating 2D collective quantum states in a well-defined extrinsic environment with identical chemistry but distinct band structure.\n\nHovden is an Assistant Professor in Materials Science at the University of Michigan. He completed his Ph.D. in Applied Physics at Cornell University. Utilizing electron microscopy he unveils new understanding of how structure at the atomic and nanoscale determines material properties at the macroscale—spanning a wide class of systems including 2D materials\, next-generation energy devices\, and biominerals.\n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DAAS Africa Workshop with James McCann\, Professor\, Department of History\, Associate Director for Development\, African Studies Center Faculty Fellow\, Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer Range Future\, Boston University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n Parables about humans and fish (and water as a medium)\, abound as cultural markers of power\, gender\, and stories that encompass narratives of politics as well. Water is a medium that sustains both belief and life. One of its characteristics is as a symbol of power and destiny. In the Upper Nile it carries meaning as a place (point of origin\, the spring at Gish)\, a conduit for travel\, a source of food and a link to spirituality. In Orthodox Christian belief it is an allusion to magical revelation\, and spirituality and those meanings about human identities are ubiquitous at its source and in its flow. Yet\, this is both a fish story and one that reveals conflicting identities of the modern world. It includes the sequencing of that adaptation to geological movement\, and the efforts of human engineers to move\, store\, and redistribute Nile waters in that modern world. The project here is ostensibly a story about a fish\, but one that narrates a deeper regional history of environmental and political change in one of the world’s most storied watersheds. This presentation explores symbols of the beliefs and substance of history as a setting for more current issues.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Functional MRI 2021-22 Speaker Series with Richard Betzel\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nNetwork neuroscience is built atop a network model in which cells\, populations\, and regions are linked to one another via anatomical or functional connections. Historically\, this model has been approached from a node-centric perspective\, emphasizing features of neural elements: the number of connections they make\, their centrality\, module affiliation\, etc. However\, brain networks can also be examined from an edge-centric perspective that explicitly focuses on properties of connections: their material and metabolic costs\, the generative processes that govern connection formation and their dynamics across time. In this talk\, I will present results from several recent papers and highlight findings and advantages of edge-centric network perspectives compared with traditional node-centric network representations.\n\nThis will be a virtual event\, you can attend via Zoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95541670960\npasscode: 207196

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Lecture. Fair Enough? Fairness Reasoning and Demand for Redistribution
DESCRIPTION:Fairness concerns are ubiquitous in the realm of redistributive politics. Yet it is not easy to pinpoint what fairness is and what a positive analysis of fairness might look like. This talk builds on research across the social sciences to provide a parsimonious approach to the study of fairness “in action\,” with evidence from Western Europe and the United States.\n \nIn Western democracies\, Cavaillé argues\, reasoning about the fairness of redistributive social policies implies two types of fairness evaluation: (1) how fair is it for some to make (a lot) more money than others in the marketplace\, (2) how fair is it for some to receive more in benefits than they pay in taxes? Each question calls to mind a different norm of fairness: the proportionality norm\, which prescribes that individual rewards be proportional to effort and talent\, and the reciprocity norm\, which prescribes that cooperative behavior be rewarded more than uncooperative behavior. Agreement with these two norms is quasi-universal. Where people differ is in their beliefs about the prevalence of norm-violating outcomes and behaviors\, i.e.\, the extent to which what is deviates from what ought to be. These fairness beliefs provide individuals with a proto-ideology through which to interpret the world and pick policies that increase the fairness of the status quo. Accounting for the nature and empirical manifestations of fairness reasoning provides a new understanding of the demand side of redistributive politics in times of rising inequality.\n \nCharlotte Cavaillé is an assistant professor of public policy at the University of Michigan's Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. Previously\, she was a visiting fellow at Princeton University’s Center for the Study of Democratic Politics and an assistant professor at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. Through her research\, which has appeared in the *Journal of Politics* and the *American Political Science Review*\, Cavaillé examines the dynamics of popular attitudes towards redistributive social policies at a time of rising inequality\, high fiscal stress\, and high levels of immigration. She is currently turning her dissertation\, which received the 2016 Mancur Olson Best Dissertation Award\, into a book manuscript entitled “Asking for More: Support for Redistribution in the Age of Inequality.” Building on that work\, she also studies the relationship between immigration\, the welfare state\, and the rise of populism. Cavaillé received her PhD in government and social policy from Harvard University in 2014.\n\nThis is an in-person event for U-M students\, faculty\, and staff only. You may participate remotely by registering at: https://myumi.ch/WJ29m\n\nThis lecture is part of the WCED series on \"Capitalism and Democracy.\" 2022 will mark the 30th anniversary of the publication of Capitalist Development and Democracy (by Dietrich Rueschmeyer et. al. in 1992) and the 80th anniversary of the publication of Capitalism\, Socialism\, and Democracy (by Joseph Schumpeter in 1942). It is thus a perfect occasion to think anew about how capitalism and democracy interact. At WCED we will be hosting a series of events with “Capitalism and Democracy” as our annual theme.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:From Theory to Practice: Conversations for Wellness—Graduate and Professional Student Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:While there is often stigma around seeking mental health services\, most people struggle with maintaining mental well-being at some point in their life. This often becomes more challenging depending on our environment and identities. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness\, one in four college students have a diagnosable mental illness\, with depression being the most common. Furthermore\, the prevalence and severity of symptoms is dependent on education\, race\, gender\, sexual orientation\, and gender identity. Black men experience worse mental health outcomes than any other racial group of men and are also less likely to seek mental health services. As we all have many identities that contribute to how we perceive and navigate mental health\, this mental health mini-series serves to highlight research and foster constructive conversations around identifying signs of mental illness\, understanding how our identities impact our mental health\, and maintaining mental well-being. Ed-Dee Williams will lead this discussion presenting his research on help-seeking behaviors in college-aged black males and how it impacts them as students\, husbands\, and businessmen.\nSpeaker: Ed-Dee Williams is a postdoctoral fellow at the Level Up Lab in the University of Michigan School of Social Work. Williams completed his Ph.D. in 2021 through the Joint Social Work and Sociology Ph.D. Program at the University of Michigan. He uses a mixed-methods approach and a socio-ecological lens to explore Black boys’ experiences with mental health\, depression\, and their mental health help-seeking behaviors. Ultimately Williams looks to improve school mental health services to better target and support Black boys by integrating Black boys’ views\, perceptions\, and beliefs into available school mental health services. His research also focuses on Black boys with autism and social skill intervention development using simulation-based interventions. He holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s of social work degree\, specializing in interpersonal practice\, mental health\, and social policy evaluation from the University of Michigan as well.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/V7GzN.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements.
