SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Carrying the Torch
DESCRIPTION:Fire has profoundly influenced ecosystems across the planet. It is a natural phenomenon borne of lightning\, but it is also a cultural one carried in the hands of human beings. As the singular species with the ability to harness fire\, it has played a fundamental role in our own evolutionary history and that of the environments we inhabit. We have expanded the natural range of fire as we have expanded our own\, introducing it to areas not commonly ignited by nature’s lightning and in doing so co-authoring ancient evolutionary pressures that have kindled remarkable diversity in landscapes and ecosystems.\n\nSouthern Michigan was once a dynamic mosaic of prairies and open savannahs bearing little resemblance to the landscape of today. Sustained and shaped by frequent fire\, these rich ecosystems formed a peninsula of grasslands extending millions of acres across the southern half of the state. Today\, less than 0.01% of these fire-dependent ecosystems remain\, reduced to remnants over a remarkably short 200-year window during which time fire suppression replaced a vital culture of burning by the region’s indigenous people. Without regular fire\, deeply shaded forests overtook savannahs and prairies\, obscuring the memory of a land once dominated by grasslands and the flames that created them. As diverse communities of fire adapted species decline and are replaced by others whose evolutionary mechanisms perpetuate pyric aversion\, fire itself is less and less capable of re-entering the landscape the longer it is absent. The window for action grows smaller each passing year. \n\nCarrying the Torch explores the unique fire ecology of southern Michigan through the visual arts\, probing its rich history\, examining its critical ecological mechanisms\, and drawing into focus the conflicting cultural ethos surrounding fire on the landscape. Encouraging viewers to consider prescribed fire today as the continuation of a practice dating back to the very emergence of our species\, it suggests through the presentation of the scientific evidence that to inhabit the prairie peninsula of southern Michigan is to be a mutualist with fire\, a carrier of the torch.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. Narratives of Transnational Solidarity in the Archives of Yugoslav Newsreels
DESCRIPTION:The Yugoslav Newsreels of Belgrade collection is a site of forgotten and untold stories about solidarities and transnational collaborations in an era of anti-colonial struggle. For the past five years\, the Non-Aligned Newsreels artistic research project\, headed by filmmaker Mila Turajlić\, has been focused on reactivating the political potential of these filmed materials. From the films made by the Yugoslav cameramen accompanying President Tito's '\"Voyages of Peace\" across the non-aligned world in the 1950s\, to the footage taken for liberation movements and newly independent countries in the 1960s\, the aim has been to explore how filmed images chronicled the birth of a political project\, becoming at the same time the vehicle through which this community was constituted. Working with the original cameraman\, and soliciting the subjectivities of those represented in the images\, the project aims to resurrect forgotten narratives and to invite a reflection on the cinematic representation of political visions.\n \nMila Turajlić is an award-winning director born in Belgrade\, Yugoslavia. Her documentary\, *The Other Side of Everything\,* won 32 awards including the prestigious IDFA Award for Best Documentary Film. It was nominated for the European Parliament’s LUX Prize. Mila’s previous film\, *Cinema Komunisto\,* premiered at Tribeca and won 16 awards including the FOCAL Award for Creative Use of Archival Footage. In 2018\, she was commissioned by MoMA to create archive-based video installations for their landmark exhibition on Yugoslav architecture. In 2020\, Mila was a Chicken & Egg Award grantee and invited to join the AMPAS Documentary Branch.\n\nRegistration for this webinar is required at https://myumi.ch/5WJVg\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CSAAW Seminar | Modeling Cognitive Diversity
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nIn this paper we propose a computational modeling approach to the study of cognitive diversity. This project takes a new approach and uses agent-based modeling to computationally investigate the relationship between functional diversity and team performance and its moderating variables. Agent based modeling allows us to explore agent behaviors\, this will not only help to determine if a correlation exists between diversity and team performance\, but also the mechanisms behind why those patterns emerge. Our model takes a specific approach and investigates how two different definitions of diversity\, Dominant Functional Diversity and Intrapersonal Functional Diversity\, affect team performance. The findings from this model indicate that the definition of diversity has a strong effect on the perceived team performance\, which could explain why results generated from studies are inconsistent with each other. Our findings reveal the importance of a universal construct of cognitive diversity which will make future studies more comparable.\n\nVIRTUAL SEMINAR - ZOOM MEETING LINK\nLink: https://umich.zoom.us/j/99929959678\nPasscode: csaaw\n\nSpeaker Bio: Caroline Skalla is an undergraduate student studying Computer Science at Kalamazoo College and will be graduating spring 2022. She has done research in high performance computing\, bioinformatics\, and bio-inspired computing. The topic of her senior individualized project is modeling cognitive diversity. Caroline is planning to pursue an advanced degree in computer science and is interested in researching data analytics\, information science and human-centered computing.

SUMMARY:Presentation:POSTPONED FOR TODAY Social Brown Bag: Native Community Standing and Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nPrior research has thoroughly examined the different factors that contribute to higher (vs. lower) status (i.e.\, standing) in U.S. society at large\, as well as the implications such positioning may have on wellbeing. Although relatively new in psychology\, there is a growing literature examining social standing as a dynamic form of identity (Kraus\, Piff\, & Keltner\, 20011\; Kraus & Stephens\, 2012). However\, traditional approaches to assessing standing often fall short of acknowledging forms of status that are culturally relevant for individuals from underrepresented backgrounds (i.e.\, Native Americans). In the first half of my talk\, I introduce a measure of community standing (i.e.\, relative positioning in Native communities based on respect\, cultural knowledge\, and engagement)\, and examine the factors that are associated with higher (vs. lower) standing in Native communities. For part two of my talk\, I will show that community standing is positively linked to wellbeing. I will then conclude with a brief discussion of how this novel measure of status can be utilized to better understand how culturally relevant standing might influence life outcomes across diverse populations.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Shiyu Zhang - The Additional Effects of Adaptive Survey Design Beyond Post-Survey Adjustment: An Experimental Evaluation - MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Shiyu Zhang \n\nShiyu Zhang is a PhD candidate at the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. Before arriving at Michigan\, she received master's degrees in immigration study\, sociology and data science\, and a bachelor's degree in psychology. Shiyu's dissertation focuses on the effect of adaptive survey design on estimates. She is also interested in collecting and using neighborhood features as auxiliary variables.\n\nThe Additional Effects of Adaptive Survey Design Beyond Post-Survey Adjustment: An Experimental Evaluation\n\nAdaptive survey design refers to using targeted procedures to recruit different sampled cases. This technique strives to reduce bias and variance of survey estimates by trying to recruit a larger and more balanced set of respondents. However\, it is not well understood how adaptive design can improve data and survey estimates beyond the well-established post-survey adjustment. This paper reports the results of an experiment that evaluated the additional effect of adaptive design to post-survey adjustments. The experiment was conducted in the Detroit Metro Area Communities Study in 2021. We evaluated the adaptive design in five outcomes: 1) response rates\, 2) demographic composition of respondents\, 3) bias and variance of key survey estimates\, 4) changes in coefficients of regression model results\, and 5) costs. The most significant benefit of the adaptive design was its ability to generate more efficient survey estimates with smaller variances and smaller design effects.

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

The History of Kawar\, a Saharan Centre of Salt Production* (Bergen/London: University of Bergen\, 1999)\n \n \nAbstract\n\nIt was from the earliest times established that the formulation of Islamic legal rules was the work of the religious scholars since the Shari’a was God’s law\, and “diversity of opinion is one of God’s blessings\". But it was the state’s task to ensure the law was implemented\, and for this purpose\, the law must have a reasonably fixed and stable form. Thus\, a selection of “preferred” or authoritative opinions came to be favored at each moment in time and place. With the establishment of the modern nation-states\, the authority of law fell fully to the modern state. These two ways of authorizing practicable legal rules have come to be known as “canonization” for the pre-modern period\, and “codification” for the laws established by state authority. In this seminar\, we will look at the various methods of establishing authority for the rules that were to be practiced\, and ask what continuities there may or not be between the two terms “canonization” and “codification”.\n\nRegister at https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIsdeirqDsoE9N8yUjRpq3p9O24vuWGUSyK

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Rackham Minority Serving Institutions Initiative Coffee Chat Series: Critical Hope—Engaging in Racialized Change Work
DESCRIPTION:There is abundant empirical evidence locating higher education policy and organizations as sites that (re)produce persistent racial inequities. These inequities are (re)created\, in no small part\, by the racialization of institutions that serve the greatest proportion of racially minoritized students—specifically\, Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). As a category of racialized organization\, contemporary theory predicts that MSIs would routinely suffer from lesser access to resources and agency\, and would face more restrictive regulation and accountability (Ray\, 2019\; McCambly & Colyvas\, forthcoming). Indeed\, we can see these patterns emerge across multiple mechanisms of public policy. But what types of actions are available to us as leaders or collectives that may diminish the relative advantages of white institutions over MSIs?\nIn this talk\, Heather McCambly will engage with the community in conversation\, sharing a construct she’s developing—racialized change work—to refer to the purposive action that actors take to build new\, equitable organizational arrangements or tear down old\, inequitable ones. McCambly will present examples and testable propositions for how racialized change work can spread (engagement)\, stick (institutionalization)\, and what effects it may have on producing equitable outcomes (impact).\nSpeaker: Heather McCambly is a mixed-methods\, interdisciplinary scholar of higher education. She also studies the role of organizations in (re)producing systemic\, racial inequalities. She draws on a range of analytic and interpretive methods to study the influence of aspiring change agents on institutionalized racial inequities in higher education policy. Constructs central to her work include racialized organizations\, institutional persistence and change\, racial frames\, political development and racial backlash\, and organizational sensemaking.\nMcCambly’s current research asks: 1) What is and what could be the role of private philanthropy and public grantmaking in effecting racially just policy change in U.S. postsecondary education? and 2) Under what conditions do equity agendas address racialized inequalities rather than operating as new labels for old practices?\nAs a first-generation college student\, a community college graduate\, and a multi-ethnic Latina\, she is personally invested in generating clearer explanations for how\, despite years of equity interventions\, students of color continue to have limited access to life-affirming postsecondary experiences.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/293zD.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Black Hole Collider Physics
DESCRIPTION:Zoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/94692610056\n\nFrom the flying cannonball of Newton to the free-falling elevator of Einstein\, thought experiments have traditionally played an important role in our understanding of gravitational physics. In this talk\, I will describe how imagining the scattering of black holes and gravitons can shed light on the two-body problem in General Relativity. I will explain how using modern ideas from collider and particle physics\, such as quantum field theory and surprising relations between gluons and gravitons\, as well as basic principles\, such as unitarity (probabilities add up to one)\, we can calculate and constrain the outcome of such scattering experiments. From such calculations we can produce state-of-art Post-Minkowskian results for LIGO and learn new lessons\, which will become more and more relevant as we enter the era of 21st century precision gravitational physics.\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Weekly Seminar for DCMB / CCMB
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nIn the Peixoto lab we use genomic approaches to understand gene expression and its epigenetic regulation in response to learning and sleep deprivation\, and its alteration in autism spectrum disorders. This requires combining behavioral paradigms in mice\, molecular biology and the analysis of high-throughput data in the brain in vivo. It also requires using the right data analysis tools to be able to capture the effect of learning or sleep in the context of an ever-active brain. In this talk we will discuss the effects of learning on chromatin accessibility and the effects of sleep loss in gene expression\, with an emphasis on how data analysis influences our ability to detect novel and reproducible biology.\n\nShort bio:\n\nLucia Peixoto received her bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the Universidad de la Republica in her native Uruguay in 2002. She subsequently earned her Ph.D. at The University of Pennsylvania under the mentorship of Dr. David S. Roos\, using genomic and computational biology approaches to understand host-pathogen interactions. She completed her postdoctoral training in Neuroscience with Dr. Ted Abel at The University of Pennsylvania in 2015. During her fellowship\, she was also a trainee at the Training Program in Neurodevelopmental disabilities at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. As a trainee at CHOP\, she completed a clinical internship at the Center for Autism Research under the supervision of Dr. Robert Schultz. She became an Assistant Professor at Washington State University in 2015 and has since been recognized with a K01 Early Career Faculty award from NIH/NINDS and a pilot award from the Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative. She is also a member of the board of directors of the International Society of computational biology (ISCB) and cochair the Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion committee of ISCB. Her lab uses behavior\, electrophysiology\, molecular biology and genomic approaches to understand how sleep and learning modulate transcription and how this may be altered in Autism Spectrum Disorders.\n\nZoom livestream link: https://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09

SUMMARY:Film Screening:CAS Film Screening and Discussion | Contrapuntal Montage in the Films of Artavazd Peleshian
DESCRIPTION:IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL EVENT\n \n Amphitheatre\, 4th Floor\n Rackham Graduate School\n 915 E. Washington Street\n Ann Arbor\, MI 48109\n \n Or participate virtually by registering in advance for the webinar: https://myumi.ch/mxx7w\n\n After registration\, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to join the webinar.\n\nVirtual participants will be able to join the lecture at 5:30 PM\, after the in-person screening of the film \"The Seasons\" (1975).\n \n In 1971\, the Armenian filmmaker Artavazd Peleshyan\, who had already established a name for himself with found footage films such as “The Beginning” (1967) and “We” (1969)\, articulated his theory of contrapuntal montage in the short programmatic text “Montage-at-a-Distance\, or: A Theory of Distance”. Building on the tradition of earlier Soviet directors such as Sergei Eisenstein and Dziga Vertov\, Peleshyan postulated a form of montage that could create contrapuntal effects\, not only when juxtaposed\, but also at a distance from each other\, through the use of formal repetitions and variations.\n \n This talk gives an overview of Peleshyan’s theory of montage\, and how it has been applied in films whose themes have ranged from the history of the Russian revolution (“The Beginning”)\, to Armenian national self-conscious (“We”)\, the space race (“Our Century\,” 1982) and\, in his most recent work\, finished in 2021 after a three-decade hiatus from filmmaking\, humanity’s relationship with the natural environment (“La Nature”). Additionally\, the diverse influences that Peleshyan’s reinvigoration of the practice of cinematic montage has had on other filmmakers – notably Jean-Luc Godard and Chris Marker – will be explored.\n \n Daniel Fairfax is assistant professor in film studies at the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt. He has recently published a two-volume history of the French film journal Cahiers du cinéma’s Marxist period\, “The Red Years of Cahiers du Cinéma (1968-1973)” (Amsterdam University Press\, 2021).\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at caswebinars@umich.edu.
