SUMMARY:Other:Synthesis and Photophysics of First-Row Transition Metal Oxide Semiconductor Nanomaterials
DESCRIPTION:Metal oxide nanomaterials based on first-row transition metals are particularly attractive for applications in renewable energy technologies because (i) they absorb visible light\, (ii) they are thermodynamically capable of performing desired photoredox chemistry\, such as water oxidation and reduction of protons or carbon dioxide\, and (iii) they are composed of inexpensive\, earth-abundant\, nontoxic elements. Complete synthetic control of the size\, shape\, and crystal structure of first-row transition metal oxide nanomaterials combined with a thorough understanding of their electrochemical and photophysical behavior is required to optimize their function in photocatalytic applications. This talk focuses on recent results from two ongoing areas in our group. The first area investigates the role of organic ligands\, solvent\, and precursor chemistry in controlling the size\, shape\, composition\, and crystal phase of first-row transition metal oxide nanocrystals synthesized at elevated pressure using solvothermal methods. The second project combines thermal difference and resonance Raman spectroscopy with DFT calculations to explore the dynamics and electronic structure of photoexcited states of nanostructured thin films of alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite). These data indicate that polarons (quasiparticles that comprise a charge-carrier self-trapped in a potential well formed by nuclear displacements of the surrounding lattice) form directly upon photoexcitation of a thermally activated lattice. This newly recognized mechanism of photoinduced polaron formation has significant implications for the use of hematite in light-conversion technologies such as photoelectrochemical water oxidation. \nKathryn Knowles (University of Rochester)

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Yelping From Home: The Tech Talk Series
DESCRIPTION:Talk: How Painting Miniature Soldiers Made Me A Better Coder\n\nI've struggled with anxiety since I was a kid and mainly focused on STEMbecause it made me feel like I could make sense of things out of my control. But once the pandemic started I realized that I needed to explore other avenues to handle this. In 2016 I was in Europe and came across a cool looking shop that had fascinating displays of tiny warriors and fantasy stuff that really caught my eye. Long story short\, I ended up purchasing a small box of plastic warriors and different paints that I had no idea how to use. They were shelved for a year after that\, until I needed a different creative outlet that I could do at home. I picked it up and started watching tutorials on how to use the paints and learned a few cool techniques.I started noticing that since I took up this hobby\, my attention span improved and I was able to focus more on my tasks at work without the familiar feeling of anxiety from rushing through them. In this talk\, I will share more about this journey and how having other hobbies can impact the wayyou do your actual work—not just as an outlet for stress or anxiety in day to day life\, but also as a tool that can bolster your professional proficiencies.\n\nSpeaker:\n\nRamon Raya:\nRamon is an android engineer on the Design Systems team based in Canada. He was born and raised in the center of Mexico in the state of Guanajuato\, and lived in Sonora for three years before eventually moving to Toronto about two years ago. Ramon has always been passionate about video games and tech. Recently\, he picked up a new hobby in miniature painting (a whole world he never expected to get into\, not being too artsy throughout his life). Ramon likes cats\, manga\, and meeting new people.\n\nModerator:\n\nNadine Fong:\nNadine is a recruiting operations specialist on the Technical Recruiting team. Having been with Yelp for the past 6 years\, she's held various roles that oversee the logistics of recruiting including coordination\, working with engineering and product interns\, and now collecting\, analyzing\, and maintaining the Tech Talent team’s data. Helping coworkers connect has been a big part of her goals during her time at Yelp — for example\, organizing traditional office socialization in the remote world (like internal trivia nights) to co-leading a new Employee Resource Group have been the latest ways of fostering and promoting inclusion on top of her day-to-day work.\n\n\nAboutYelping From Home:\n\nYelp’s mission is to connect people with great local businesses\, and two of the teams working behind the scenes to make that happen are our five star engineering and product teams. \n\nPlaying an active role in our community is a value that we have strongly prioritized over the years. Typically we would invite you to come to Yelp’s HQ to network\, grab a slice of ‘za\, and learn about the technology and culturebehind Yelp. With stay-at-home orders across the globe\, Yelp (like many of you) has had no choice but to adapt to these changes. We understand that this is a strange and challenging time for many\, so we’d like to invite you to join us as we navigate this new normal for the tech community together. \n\nTo stay connected\, create space for folks to collaborate and share some of the things Yelp has been working on\, we are launching our very own virtual tech talk series. This series of talks will feature Yelpers from engineering and product and will focus on themes such as career development\, technical skills\, workplace challenges and Yelp’s response to COVID-19.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Carrying the Torch
DESCRIPTION:Fire has profoundly influenced ecosystems across the planet. It is a natural phenomenon borne of lightning\, but it is also a cultural one carried in the hands of human beings. As the singular species with the ability to harness fire\, it has played a fundamental role in our own evolutionary history and that of the environments we inhabit. We have expanded the natural range of fire as we have expanded our own\, introducing it to areas not commonly ignited by nature’s lightning and in doing so co-authoring ancient evolutionary pressures that have kindled remarkable diversity in landscapes and ecosystems.\n\nSouthern Michigan was once a dynamic mosaic of prairies and open savannahs bearing little resemblance to the landscape of today. Sustained and shaped by frequent fire\, these rich ecosystems formed a peninsula of grasslands extending millions of acres across the southern half of the state. Today\, less than 0.01% of these fire-dependent ecosystems remain\, reduced to remnants over a remarkably short 200-year window during which time fire suppression replaced a vital culture of burning by the region’s indigenous people. Without regular fire\, deeply shaded forests overtook savannahs and prairies\, obscuring the memory of a land once dominated by grasslands and the flames that created them. As diverse communities of fire adapted species decline and are replaced by others whose evolutionary mechanisms perpetuate pyric aversion\, fire itself is less and less capable of re-entering the landscape the longer it is absent. The window for action grows smaller each passing year. \n\nCarrying the Torch explores the unique fire ecology of southern Michigan through the visual arts\, probing its rich history\, examining its critical ecological mechanisms\, and drawing into focus the conflicting cultural ethos surrounding fire on the landscape. Encouraging viewers to consider prescribed fire today as the continuation of a practice dating back to the very emergence of our species\, it suggests through the presentation of the scientific evidence that to inhabit the prairie peninsula of southern Michigan is to be a mutualist with fire\, a carrier of the torch.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Is Spinoza Still Salient? Are the Rabbis Really Relevant? Thinking in the Era of Instrumentalized Knowledge-Making
DESCRIPTION:The pressure to produce scholarship that’s relevant and publicly engaged comes as a welcome reproach and corrective to the elitism and insulation of academia. Yet\, what is the cost of such a product-driven mindset with its embeddedness in market ideologies and neoliberal deliverables? How do the logics that subsidize this “Western” enterprise marginalize divergent voices and sideline alternative methods? Turning to the rabbis of late antiquity and early modern Spinoza\, opens us to seeing our particular academic enterprises and\, more broadly still\, the state of being human\, differently. This dares us to consider: what might it mean to think in the absence of teleology\, anthropocentrism\, and their supremacist rationales? \n\nRegister for the Zoom stream here: https://myumi.ch/y99w4\n\nGilah Kletenik\, a scholar of philosophy and Jewish thought\, is Postdoctoral Associate at the Elie Wiesel Center for Jewish Studies at Boston University. Rafe Neis\, an historian of ancient Judaism and rabbinic literature\, is Associate Professor of History and Judaic Studies. They come together to talk about teleology\, scholarship\, being human\, and the possibilities for meaning-making. Their discussion will be moderated by Scott Spector\, Director\, Frankel Center for Judaic Studies\, and Rudolf Mrazek Collegiate Professor of History and German Studies.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:STEM Equity in Research & Teaching
DESCRIPTION:Why do we study how to become better educators? Historically\, the methods used to do this research can perpetuate racial bias. As such\, research produced by these faulty methods fails to provide insight that could dismantle unjust systems in STEM education. Equitable research methods in Discipline Based Education Research (DBER) are necessary for equity-centered research and teaching.\n\nIn this talk U-M Postdoctoral Fellow Paulette Vincent-Ruz (she/ella) will present:\n1.) The “Resources for Equitable Activation of Chemical Thinking Framework”\, a framework she proposed to center equity theories in DBER.\n2.) Her QuantCrit (Quantitative Critical Theory) methodological approach. \n\nShe will use this framework to unearth a counterstory to traditional and harmful explanations of the “underperformance” of Black students in an Introductory Chemistry course and practical implications that improve instructors' practice\, and better support their marginalized students. \n\nDr. Vincent-Ruz will engage the Michigan community in conversation on how to center equity in Discipline Based Education Research and practice.\n\nAt Michigan Engineering\, the job of creating a more diverse\, equitable and inclusive community rests not within one organization or group of people\, but with all of us. Only in this way can we move the field toward an equity-centered future. Equity-centered engineering is a guiding

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Trouble with Passion: How Searching for Fulfillment at Work Fosters Inequality
DESCRIPTION:ISR Insights Speaker Series\nThe Trouble with Passion: How Searching for Fulfillment at Work Fosters Inequality\nThursday\, February 24 at 12pm ET via Zoom \n\nSpeaker: Erin Cech\, Associate Professor of Sociology\, University of Michigan\; Faculty Associate\, Population Studies Center\n\n“Follow your passion” is a popular mantra for career decision-making in the United States. In this talk\, Cech will discuss her research on this ubiquitous cultural narrative that she call the “passion principle.” The passion principle is rooted in tensions between postindustrial capitalism and cultural norms of self-expression and is compelling to college-educated career aspirants and workers because passion is presumed to motivate the hard work required for success while providing opportunities for meaning and self-expression. Although passion-seeking seems like a promising option for individuals hoping to avoid drudgery in their labor force participation\, she argues that the passion principle has a dark side: it reinforces socio-economic disadvantages and occupational segregation among career aspirants and workers in the aggregate and helps reproduce an exploited\, overworked white-collar labor force. These findings have implications for cultural notions of “good work” popular in higher education and the US workforce and raises broader questions about what it means when becoming a dedicated labor force participant feels like an act of self-fulfillment.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Reliable Learning and Control in Dynamic Environments: Towards Unified Theory and Learned Robotic Agility
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:\nRecent breathtaking advances in machine learning beckon to their applications in a wide range of real-world autonomous systems. However\, for safety-critical settings such as agile robotic control in hazardous environments\, we must confront several key challenges before widespread deployment. Most importantly\, the learning system must interact with the rest of the autonomous system (e.g.\, highly nonlinear and non-stationary dynamics) in a way that safeguards against catastrophic failures with formal guarantees. In addition\, from both computational and statistical standpoints\, the learning system must incorporate prior knowledge for efficiency and generalizability.\n \nIn this talk\, I will present progress towards establishing a unified framework that fundamentally connects learning and control. First\, I motivate the benefit and necessity of such a unified framework by the Neural-Control Family\, a family of nonlinear deep-learning-based control methods with not only stability and robustness guarantees but also new capabilities in agile robotic control. Then I will discuss two unifying interfaces between learning and control: (1) meta-adaptive control\, and (2) competitive online control. Both interfaces yield settings that jointly admit both learning-theoretic and control-theoretic guarantees.\n\nBIO:\nGuanya Shi is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the California Institute of Technology. He received a B.E. in mechanical engineering with a dual degree in economics from Tsinghua University in 2017. He was a deep learning research intern at NVIDIA in 2020. His research interests are centered around the intersection of machine learning and control theory\, spanning the entire spectrum from theory and foundation\, algorithm design\, to real-world agile robotic control. Guanya was the recipient of several awards\, including the Simoudis Discovery Prize from Caltech and the Rising Star in Data Science from the University of Chicago.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Recognizing Privilege: A True Beginning to Social Change
DESCRIPTION:This session will explore privilege as it relates to dominant identities and discuss how one’s privilege has systemic advantages regardless if earned or aware. Participants will receive a basic introduction to privilege followed by an interactive activity that will identify individual areas of systemic advantage based on social group affiliation. The participants who would gain the most from this session are those who are willing to go beyond their comfort zone and engage in difficult conversations that will not only challenge them to be more conscious of their behaviors\, but also serve as motivation for social change. This session is not intended to target anyone’s identity or make folks feel guilty about their privilege(s)\; rather\, make them aware of their personal advantages and hopefully inspire them to be more inclusive. A brave space will be created so participants can engage in dialogue and not feel judged or targeted.\nLearning Objectives:\n\nIdentify common advantaged identities\nUnderstand their own privilege(s) based on association with various social identity groups\nReflect on personal experiences where privilege was consciously or unconsciously manifested in their daily interactions\n\nThis workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact rack-prof-dev@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/WJ24w.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence — CCAT Distinguished Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Recent years have seen astounding growth in the deployment of AI systems in critical domains such as autonomous vehicles\, criminal justice\, healthcare\, hiring\, housing\, human resource management\, law enforcement\, and public safety\, where decisions taken by AI agents directly impact human lives. Consequently\, there is an increasing concern if these decisions can be trusted to be correct\, reliable\, fair\, and safe\, especially under adversarial attacks. How then can we deliver on the promise of the benefits of AI but address these scenarios that have life-critical consequences for people and society? In short\, how can we achieve trustworthy AI?\n\nUnder the umbrella of trustworthy computing\, there is a long-established framework employing formal methods and verification techniques for ensuring trust properties like reliability\, security\, and privacy of traditional software and hardware systems. Just as for trustworthy computing\, formal verification could be an effective approach for building trust in AI-based systems. However\, the set of properties needs to be extended beyond reliability\, security\, and privacy to include fairness\, robustness\, probabilistic accuracy under uncertainty\, and other properties yet to be identified and defined. Further\, there is a need for new property specifications and verification techniques to handle new kinds of artifacts\, e.g.\, data distributions\, probabilistic programs\, and machine learning-based models that may learn and adapt automatically over time. This talk will pose a new research agenda\, from a formal methods perspective\, for us to increase trust in AI systems.\n---\nAbout the speaker: Dr. Wing joined Columbia in 2017 as the inaugural Avanessians Director of the Data Science Institute. Prior to Columbia\, Dr. Wing was Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Research\, served on the faculty and as department head in computer science at Carnegie Mellon University\, and served as Assistant Director for Computer and Information Science and Engineering at the National Science Foundation. Dr. Wing’s research contributions have been in the areas of trustworthy AI\, security and privacy\, specification and verification\, concurrent and distributed systems\, programming languages\, and software engineering. Her 2006 seminal essay\, titled \"Computational Thinking\,’’ is credited with helping to establish the centrality of computer science to problem-solving in fields where previously it had not been embraced and thereby influencing K-12 and university curricula worldwide. \n\nShe is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, the American Association for the Advancement of Science\, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)\, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). Dr. Wing received distinguished service awards from the Association for Computing Machinery and the Computing Research Association and an honorary doctorate degree from Linköping University\, Sweden. She earned her bachelor’s\, master’s\, and doctoral degrees in computer science\, all from MIT.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Small Aperture Ultrasound Transducers for Advanced Imaging and Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nUltrasound imaging and therapy have been increasingly important in disease diagnosis\, treatment guidance\, treatment and post treatment assessment. In this talk\, novel small aperture ultrasound transducers are presented for advanced intravascular ultrasound imaging (IVUS)\, intravenous sonothrombolysis\, localized tissue ablation and drug delivery. In specific\, high frequency (40-60 MHz) micromachined piezoelectric composite transducers and arrays with broad bandwidth (-6 dB fraction bandwidth of ~ 80%) were developed and integrated into 3-Fr catheters for intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) imaging. Dual frequency transducers and arrays (6.5 MHz/30 MHz\, 3 MHz/30 MHz) were also successfully demonstrated for contrast enhanced intravascular superharmonic imaging (or acoustic angiography) toward detection of plaque vulnerability. For the case of intravenous thrombolysis\, small aperture (diameter <2 mm) sub-MHz forward-looking transducers were successfully demonstrated\, in-vitro\, for microbubbles/nanodroplets-mediated sonothrombolysis. Other transducer techniques such as small aperture high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) transducers\, laser ultrasound transducers and dual-mode transducers were also investigated for localized tissue ablation\, drug delivery and intravascular sonothrombolysis. Finally\, challenges and future perspectives of ultrasound transducers are discussed for advanced ultrasound imaging\, therapy\, and drug delivery.\n\nBiography: \nDr. Xiaoning Jiang is a Dean F. Duncan Distinguished Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and a University Faculty Scholar at North Carolina State University. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at North Carolina State University and University of North Carolina\, Chapel Hill\, and an Adjunct Professor of Neurology at Duke University. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: Writing the Past-Perfect: Memoir and the Making of a Meaningful Past
DESCRIPTION:Format: This lecture is presented in hybrid format: in-person in 1014 Tisch Hall and virtual via Zoom webinar (register: https://myumi.ch/Ek82M).\n\nDescription: Questions about the relationship between historical memory and slavery have become increasingly acute in a political environment where thinly veiled claims to racial purity have been weaponized to proscribe the boundaries of national citizenship. At the same time\, various protest movements have demanded that we reconsider the violent legacy of racism that is enshrined\, commemorated\, and memorialized in this country. In this talk\, Jason Young argues that much of what we have inherited as the sights\, sounds\, and symbols of slavery are of very recent provenance\, much of it produced by influential myth-makers in the early twentieth century who responded to the racial anxieties of their day by weaponizing their memories of the antebellum past. The themes explored in this talk continue to have great currency in the current moment when debates about historical memory\, race and slavery are being waged both in the arena of popular culture as well as in the halls of academia.\n\nBiography: Jason R. Young is an associate professor in the Department of History at the University of Michigan. He is the author of Rituals of Resistance: African Atlantic Religion in Kongo and the Lowcounrty Region of Georgia and South Carolina in the Era of Slavery\, an exploration into the religious and ritual practices that linked Kongo with South Carolina in the era of slavery. He is the co-editor\, with Edward J. Blum\, of The Souls of W.E.B. Du Bois: New Essays and Reflections. Professor Young has published articles in the Journal of African American History\, Journal of Africana Religions and Journal of Southern Religion among others. He is currently conducting research toward his next book project\, \"'To Make the Slave Anew': Art\, History and the Politics of Authenticity.\"\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:SGT Professor Seminar & Lab Tour: Dr. Mirko Gamba
DESCRIPTION:Join SGT on February 24th from 5:00-6:30 pm in 1008 FXB for a seminar and lab tour given by Dr. Gamba! Dr. Gamba is a Professor of Aerospace Engineering and head of the Gas Dynamics Imaging Lab. His research focuses on laser diagnostics for fluid and reacting flows\, low and high-speed mixing\, and combustion. In this presentation\, he will discuss how we can leverage the basic concepts we all learn in an undergraduate curriculum in aerospace engineering to deliver new technologies. Starting from basic concepts\, we will develop new processes that are grounded in basic science\, but promise to revolutionize our field. This can be a journey that all of us may one day be able to take: all successful ideas start on the back of a paper napkin\, and if grounded in the basic principles\, can develop into extraordinary machines. \n\nSign up for the seminar and lab tour: bit.ly/SeminarAero\n**Note: Lab tour will be conducted after the seminar**

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CJS Thursday Lecture | Rabelais\, Rakugo and Me
DESCRIPTION:Please note that the start time of this lecture is 7pm\, Ann Arbor time.\n\nEach culture has its official side and popular side. Beneath the serious Japan of the tea ceremony and Zen lies a hidden laughing Japan represented by rakugo\, a comical monologue. As a pupil of a rakugo performer and as a novelist\, I also have been a Rabelaisan from a young age. This presentation will show you how Japanese humor could be married with the western carnivalesque tradition.\n\n Anna Ogino is Professor of French literature at Keio University. A specialist in the French 16th century\, she earned her PhD from Sorbonne University. Her thesis on François Rabelais’s satirical eulogy has been published in Japan. As a novelist\, she won the 105th Akutagawa Prize and is author of more than thirty books\, sadly none of which is translated in English. She is also a disciple of rakugo master\, Kingentei Basho 11th of this name. She once asked Basho in how many years she could be promoted to the rank of master. The answer was… in thirty years.\n\nThis event is cosponsored by the U-M Department of Romance Languages and Literatures.\n\nThis colloquium series is made possible by the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nZoom registration is here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_6Rrx24yNRIWRXWVEOey9zA\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:Enter the Haggis
DESCRIPTION:Proof of COVID vaccination required for entry. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \n\nFor more than 20 years\, Toronto’s Enter The Haggis has been bringing a rock edge to contemporary celtic music by effortlessly melding bagpipes and fiddles with classic rock n’ roll instrumentation and AAA-friendly vocals. It all comes together to make this 5-piece unit a favorite of the festival circuit (Milwaukee Irish Festival & Dublin Irish Festival among many others\,) the morning show circuit (Live with Regis and Kelly and A&E’s Breakfast With The Arts) and the 10s of thousands of fans\, the self-described “Haggis Heads\,” who have purchased their records\, donated more than $150\,000 to finance 3 albums\, and made their most recent effort debut at #9 on the Billboard Heatseakers chart. It should be of no surprise then that Enter The Haggis has become a critical favorite\, receiving praise from The New York Times\, The Boston Globe\, The Washington Post and Canada’s Globe and Mail.
