SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:CSAS Transnational Conference | In and Out of South Asia: Race\, Capitalism\, and Mobility
DESCRIPTION:For full conference details see: https://myumi.ch/XVyAq\n\n*How do ethnic\, caste\, and racial hierarchies in South Asia interact with those elsewhere as people\, ideas\, and goods move in and out?* *How are flows and networks of capital reconfigured within existing and new hierarchies of im/mobility?* *How might a focus on things/people/ideas that move “in and out” help us conceptualize new ways of imagining and engaging South Asia?*\n\nRegister for this Zoom event here: https://myumi.ch/Ek8Ge\n \nThese questions urge us to consider mobility and immobility anew. Global pandemics\, surveillance regimes\, and border fences engender old and new forms of captivity and incarceration throughout South Asia. At the same time analytical and conceptual frames for studying the region have sought to break out of the gilded cage of methodological nationalism and embrace regional and transregional spatial units\, such as the recent turn towards Inter Asia\, Africa-Asia\, and the Indian Ocean. A rich and productive scholarship has emerged from this transregional turn\, providing new vocabularies for understanding polity\, economy\, and sociality in South Asia and beyond.\n \nThis conference brings together a set of scholars and practitioners who are thinking across scale and time to explore the particular tension between mobility and immobility in shaping conceptual and methodological itineraries in and out of South Asia. Participants explore the histories and futures of race\, caste\, and capitalism in South Asia and beyond.\n \nConference Format:\n\nIn and Out of South Asia: Race\, Capitalism\, and Mobility will function in a new and innovative conference format. Our panelists have submitted their video presentations for pre-conference circulation. Their submissions can be accessed via this link: https://myumi.ch/M9kWR\n\nWe invite the audience to view these submissions in advance of the conference itself. On February 25-26\, 2022\, faculty discussants will provide mini-keynote opening and closing remarks and comments on the presentations. Audience members will then be invited to ask questions and engage with the panel.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition displays images from the archive of photographs from Humanize the Numbers\, an ongoing collaborative project. Students and faculty at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor join individuals impacted by the criminal justice system in Michigan to create photographs for those on the outside. The project aims to showcase the creativity of those who are incarcerated\, using photography to allow their stories to add a personal dimension to the overwhelming statistics of mass incarceration. This exhibit hopes to foster discussion with policy makers\, activists\, and civic leaders about prison reform and mass incarceration.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Big Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:Big Astronomy focuses on three of Earth’s largest observatories in Chile’s rugged Andes Mountains and arid Atacama Desert. Includes an abbreviated star talk.\n\nThe state-of-the-art Planetarium & Dome Theater at the U-M Museum of Natural History transports visitors beyond distant stars and deep into the ocean from the comfort of reclining seats. Tickets $8. Tickets are available on the day of the show at the Museum Store.\nThe planetarium is operating at less than 50% capacity to maximize distancing between viewers. As with all University of Michigan buildings\, masks are required.

SUMMARY:Performance:Galens 2022 Smoker: Med School Musical
DESCRIPTION:The Galen's Smoker is an annual musical parody of life at UMMS and hands-down the most fun to be had at the University of Michigan Medical School! The 104th Smoker continues the time-honored tradition of saying “thank you” and “we love you” to our educators in the best way we know how: roasting them in the most brutal and outlandish ways possible. The show is conceived\, written\, produced\, directed\, and performed entirely by medical students. The Smoker aims to delight\, amuse\, impress\, and disgust through its humorous and juvenile perspective on Michigan Medical School education\, its gunner students\, and our beloved\, revered (and sometimes feared) faculty.\n---\nMasks and proof of vaccine OR a negative COVID-19 test are REQUIRED. Be sure to read about the event policies before you complete your purchase. Due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases throughout the region\, the University of Michigan will require a proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative-test protocol for indoor events. All guests and working personnel ages 12 and older will be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination OR a negative COVID-19 PCR or rapid test taken within 72 hours of the event. Face masks continue to be required and must be worn during all events.

SUMMARY:Performance:35th Annual Storytelling Festival
DESCRIPTION:Proof of COVID vaccination required for entry. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \n\nThe Ark’s 2022 Storytelling Festival on February 26 features six local and regional storytellers\, presenting a sampler of styles and story types. The program celebrates diversity in the art of story\, and includes true personal stories\, tall tales\, folk tales\, a story from literature\, and a couple of songs from the folk tradition. This program not only entertains\, it also gives a window into the reason that the oral tradition of storytelling is the most enduring adventure in human history.\n\nStorytellers include four members of the Ann Arbor Storytellers Guild – Steve Daut\, MC\, Lorelle Otis\, Jane Fink\, and Rich Swanson. In addition\, Barbara Schutzgruber from the Lansing Storytellers\, and Shani Womack from the Detroit Association of Black Storytellers will each tell a story and sing a song.
