DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition displays images from the archive of photographs from Humanize the Numbers\, an ongoing collaborative project. Students and faculty at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor join individuals impacted by the criminal justice system in Michigan to create photographs for those on the outside. The project aims to showcase the creativity of those who are incarcerated\, using photography to allow their stories to add a personal dimension to the overwhelming statistics of mass incarceration. This exhibit hopes to foster discussion with policy makers\, activists\, and civic leaders about prison reform and mass incarceration.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:RNA Seminar: “Translating the cancer genome: dark matter proteins”
DESCRIPTION:In-person/Hybrid seminar co-hosted by The Center for RNA Biomedicine\, Department of Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics\, and Department of Pediatric Oncology\n\nTalk title: “Translating the cancer genome: dark matter proteins”\n\nKeywords: cancer\, ribosome profiling\, functional genomics\, gene discovery.\n\nAbstract: Although genomic analyses predict many non-canonical open reading frames (ORFs) in the human genome\, it is unclear whether they encode biologically active proteins in diseases such as cancer. Here\, we have developed functional genomics platforms to systematically interrogate non-canonical ORFs identified in ribosome profiling data. Using CRISPR loss-of-function screens in numerous human cancer models\, we define the frequency with which ORFs contribute to cell essentiality phenotypes. We further constructed large-scale ORF plasmid libraries to assess their capacity to encode a protein and induce cancer cell transcriptional changes. We pursued focused investigation of several uncharacterized protein-coding loci\, defining roles for the lncRNA-ORF GREP1 in breast cancer and the ASNSD1 upstream ORF (uORF) in medulloblastoma. Lastly\, we have assembled a pathway to bring such ORF candidates into the mainstream of biological research via an international consortium of gene database stakeholders. Together\, this work establishes non-canonical ORFs as critical mediators of cancer cell biology\, suggests their potential promise as therapeutic targets in cancer\, and outlines a path forward for dissemination of these ORFs amongst the global research community.\n\nIf you are having trouble registering\, please contact Martina Jerant at mjerant@umich.edu

DESCRIPTION:Thinking about new writing and publishing goals in 2022? Feeling a bit stretched thin with your responsibilities and commitments to others? This in-person writing retreat on March 7-8\, 2022 is especially for those who need protected time and space away from campus and other responsibilities to dedicate to academic writing. Pierce Cedar Creek Institute offers private guest rooms and spacious indoor writing spaces with natural scenery for inspiration to write about community-engaged research\, community partnerships\, broader impacts work\, service-learning\, and other writing that supports engagement with partners beyond campus borders.\n\nThis two-day\, residential retreat includes both unstructured writing time and optional structured writing support\, including workshops\, consultations\, and peer feedback. Consultants from The Writing Center and University Outreach and Engagement will be available to provide feedback both days and will build connections among the writers throughout the retreat\, so that even while writing on your own\, you are part of a supportive community.

Today\, his earthbound poetry remains potent\, but in addition to his world-weary candor\, Moreland’s music smolders with gentle wisdom\, flashes of wit and joy\, and compassion.
