SUMMARY:Film Screening:Black Islam in the Americas Series. *Two Gods* Free Screening
DESCRIPTION:This film screening is part of our “Black Islam in the Americas” Series\, presented by the Global Islamic Studies Center (GISC) at the University of Michigan! This series will explore the history of Black Islam and the experiences of Black Muslim communities in the Americas\, including North America\, Latin America\, and the Caribbean.\n \nFrom March 4th-18th\, you will have the opportunity to watch *Two Gods* (2020)\, a film by Zeshawn Ali and Aman Ali\, on demand and for free. Pre-order your free tickets now: http://watch.eventive.org/gisctwogods\n\n---\n*Two Gods* is the story of Hanif\, a Black Muslim casket maker and ritual body washer in Newark\, New Jersey\, who takes two young men under his wing to teach them how to live better lives\, illustrating the complexities of everyday Muslim community life.\n\nYear: 2020 | Run Time: 82 minutes | Language: English | Director: Zeshawn Ali | Producer: Aman Ali\n \nAn intimate documentary about faith\, renewal\, and healing\, *TWO GODS* follows a Muslim casket maker and ritual body washer in New Jersey\, as he takes two young men under his wing to teach them how to live better lives. Inside a corner casket shop in East Orange\, laboring amid the sawdust and the long pine boxes\, casket makers work with mentors in the Islamic burial tradition. Hanif\, a Black Muslim casket maker who finds spiritual grounding in his work\, brings two boys from the local community under his tutelage\; 12-year-old Furquan and 17-year-old Naz\, neither of whom have fathers at home. Hanif teaches Furquan and Naz the practices of Islamic burial rituals as they assist him with his work. Having formerly served time in prison\, Hanif continues to grapple with past mistakes and new challenges\, while his faith and community helps him guide his young charges on their own paths toward healing and embracing life.\n \nShot in a striking black-and-white\, *TWO GODS* explores the juxtaposition of grief and the rituals of death with the vibrancy and potential of adolescence. The documentary turns an empathetic lens on Muslim American stories\, ultimately crafting a moving portrait of both the intimate moments and the complexities of the everyday Muslim American experience.\n---\n\nOn March 17th\, GISC will host *Two Gods* filmmakers Zeshawn Ali and Aman Ali for a filmmaker Q&A. This conversation will be moderated by local Detroit filmmaker and GISC Fellow Razi Jafri. RSVP: http://bit.ly/GISCTwoGods\n \nJoin us for the rest of the 'Black Islam in the Americas' series:\n \nOn March 29that 1:00 PM ET\, GISC will host Dr. Su'ad Abdul Khabeer and Dr. Rasul Miller for a lecture on Black Islam in the Americas\, with a focus on the United States. Dr. Su’ad Abdul Khabeer is a scholar\, artist\, activist\, and author of* Muslim Cool: Race\, Religion\, and Hip Hop in the United States* (2016). She is an associate professor of American Culture and Director of the Arab and Muslim American Studies program at the University of Michigan. She received her Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from Princeton University\, is a graduate of the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University\, and completed the Islamic Studies diploma program of the Institute at Abu Nour University (Damascus). In her most recent work\, Umi’s Archive\, Dr. Abdul Khabeer examines the intersections of official history and the untold stories of Black women and Black Muslims through the lens of her mother’s life. Umi means mother in Arabic\, and Dr. Abdul Khabeer examines her mother’s photographic and literary archives\, and so the digital exhibition series is Umi's Archive. The project sees everyday Black women as people who know things we all need to know. Dr. Rasul Miller's work looks into Black Muslim communities in the Atlantic world\, Black radicalism and its impact on social and cultural movements in the twentieth-century U.S.\, Black internationalism\, and West African intellectual history. Dr. Miller's current book project\, *Black Muslim Cosmopolitanism: The Global Character of New York City's Black Muslim Movements*\, examines the Black internationalist origins of early twentieth-century Black Sunni Muslim congregations in and around New York City\, and the cultural and political orientations that characterized subsequent communities of Black Muslims in the U.S. who built robust\, transnational networks as they actively engaged traditions and communities of Muslims on the African continent. RSVP: http://bit.ly/BlackIslamLect\n \nThis Black Islam in the Americas Series is brought to you by the Global Islamic Studies Center\, and cosponsored by American Culture\, Arab and Muslim American Studies\, the Center for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\, the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, the Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, the African Studies Center\, the LSA Office for Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion\, and the International Institute all at the University of Michigan. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Dutch Studies: A Decolonial Revision
DESCRIPTION:In 1956\, 11 years after proclaiming Indonesia’s independence from 350 years of Dutch occupation\, the first president of Indonesia\, Sukarno\, received an honorary doctor of civil law degree conferred by U-M President Harlan Hatcher. As we celebrate fifty years of Dutch at the University of Michigan with this exhibit\, we trace our paths toward a new frame for Dutch Studies — one that emphasizes colonial repair and rethinks which voices matter. View the exhibit in the north lobby of the Hatcher Library.\n\nAbout the exhibit:\n\nIn the section titled “A New Canon\,\" the exhibit includes an empty space where the novel Max Havelaar by Multatuli would be\, the “top 10” book touted to have “ended colonialism.\" With the empty space\, we acknowledge the book’s white saviorism that rang in the new era of colonial oppression and cultural genocide called the “(Dutch) Ethical Policy.\" The books in our new canon crowd out Multatuli’s empty space in the same way that the other materials on display\, such as the sound of the carillon score of Gold Coast composer\, Charles E. Graves\, or the voice of Indonesian forerunner of colonial reparations\, Jeffry Pondaag\, drowns out the spaces left blank by Willem Janszoon Blaeu’s maps\, which reside in our U-M Library collections but are purposely not displayed.\n\nThe exhibit continues with collections of materials that show the Dutch program’s comparative approach to Dutch Studies\, one that connects histories and cultures and creates understanding through familiar frames of reference. Our collection of Anne Frank materials is supplemented with U-M Professor of History Rudolf Mrázek’s comparative work on the “model camps” of Theresienstadt (Nazi) and Boven Digoel (Dutch). A translation of Leendert van der Valk’s article “1619” on the Dutch foundations of U.S. slavery lies next to Marjolein van Pagee’s Banda: De Genocide van Jan Pieterszoon Coen\, an analysis of the 1621 Dutch genocide and enslavement of the Bandanese people.\n\nThe last part of the exhibit highlights the speakers scheduled to deliver lectures at an end-of-semester anniversary symposium.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:New generation of neurophotonics for multiscale access of mammalian brain
DESCRIPTION:Human brain as the center of the nervous system controls our physiology\, consciousness\, and behavior. The function of the brain relies on the interactions of tens of billions of neurons through tens of trillions of synapses. Gaining precise knowledge of neural circuits relies on innovative and transformative tools for quantitative measurement of cellular dynamics and signaling in the live brain. Our lab works at the interface of optical engineering\, device fabrication\, image processing\, and neuroscience to deliver enabling tools for neuroscience research. Specifically\, we are working on three frontiers. First\, the major challenge of cellular resolution function recording is the superficial access depth. Current methods are limited to ~ 1 mm depth\, insufficient to access deep brain regions. We have developed Clear Optically Matched Panoramic Access Channel Technique (COMPACT) for deep-brain large-scale neurophotonic interface. I will present the results of applying COMPACT for deep-brain calcium imaging. Second\, high-performance glutamate sensors and voltage indicators are on the horizon. Seeing information flow at millisecond time scale with subcellular resolution among neural circuits in the live mammalian brain is about to become a reality. However\, currently available imaging tools are insufficient to keep up with the sensor response. We have developed an optical gearbox that can convert existing scopes for such high-speed measurement. I will present the results of in vivo kHz imaging. Third\, cellular resolution recording has been limited to animal models. In comparison\, fMRI and ultrasound can be applied to human brain. Can we leverage the advance of cellular resolution recording to address the key challenges of human brain measurement modalities? I will discuss the latest progress on the multimodal imaging of mammalian brain.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Translating Sedition in South Asia: 20th Century Prison texts in English\, Hindi and Urdu
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, I consider a set of developing materials I choose to label ‘prison texts’. Drawing from research on revolutionary terrorism\, translation theory and literary criticism in South Asian studies\, I focus on prison texts to think through crucial trajectories of political prisoner-hood in late colonial India. I dwell on the relationships between literary production\, imprisonment\, and ‘vernacular’ public spheres in pre-independence India to move towards disambiguating the motivations of colonial governance and its reliance on imprisonment as disciplining technology. I read across Urdu\, Hindi\, and English and across the genres of novels\, autobiographies\, archived police reports\, official translations of ‘confessions’\, poetry and jail letters to explore frames of racialized knowledge production (which led\, for instance\, to the colonially coined term ‘terrorists’ to describe anti-colonial thinkers and writers). Philologically constructed systems of meaning worked in concert with the institutional apparatus of imprisonment to contain and reinforce calcified frames for reading anti-colonial resistance\, and this stage of my research anchors these frames of interpretation in multilingual ‘prison texts’.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:AE200 Seminar Series | Impact of Engineering Ethics
DESCRIPTION:George Halow\nProfessor of Practice\nAerospace Engineering\nUniversity of Michigan\n\nAmong the most critical traits of effective leaders is ethics. Ethics are a fundamental requirement for leading people\, engendering the trust and confidence of your customers\, co-workers\, and the community at large\, and for delivering the best and most reliable products and services. Furthermore\, they embody the “right things to do”. It has been said\, “it takes years to build a reputation for strong ethics\, and just one single lapse to risk destroying it for years to come.” This is especially true in business.\n\nThis seminar examines a high-profile breach in ethics – what happened\, the immediate impacts\, and the lasting legacies it left.\n\nAbout the speaker...\nGeorge F. Halow has been a Professor of Practice in Aerospace Engineering since May 1\, 2019 after a distinguished career as an executive at Ford Motor Company. At Ford\, he held numerous positions in engineering\, manufacturing\, and strategy and was the Chief Program Engineer of Expedition\, Navigator\, Crown Victoria\, Grand Marquis\, Town Car\, and Ranger at various points in his career.\n\nAt the University of Michigan\, he created an Introduction to the Aerospace Enterprise course for primarily freshmen and sophomores\, covering the aerospace industry\, leadership\, culture\, and communication\, and careers in aerospace.\n\nHe is launching an all-new Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and systems engineering leadership course series starting in fall\, 2022. The course series\, which is unprecedented at the undergraduate level\, has garnered strong corporate interest\, and corporate donations have enabled the build of an MBSE Leadership Lab for the courses and student project team collaboration.\n\nGeorge is also the Program Director of a new online Master of Engineering in Aerospace Leadership degree program which is launching in January 2023.\n\nGeorge is co-author of US (US6745151 B2) and German (DE10319493 A1) Patents for on-vehicle data acquisition buffering\, remote transmission\, and analysis (2004).

SUMMARY:Presentation:CCN Forum: The neural basis of social interaction perception
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nHumans perceive the world in rich social detail. We effortlessly recognize not only objects and faces in our environment\, but also other peoples’ social interactions. The ability to perceive others’ social interactions is critical for social trait judgement and ultimately guides how humans act in the social world. We recently identified a region that selectively represents others’ social interactions in the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) using controlled experiments with simple stimuli. However\, it is unclear how social interactions are processed in the real world where they co-vary with many other sensory and social features. In this talk I will discuss new work using naturalistic video paradigms and novel machine learning analyses to understand how humans process social interactions in natural settings. We find that social interactions guide behavioral judgements and are selectively processed in the brain\, even after controlling for the effects of other visual and social information. Finally\, I will discuss the computational implications of humans’ social interaction selectivity and how we can develop artificial systems that share this core human ability.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Dorr Lecture - Katharine Huntington\, University of Washington
DESCRIPTION:The Tsangpo Gorge region of the eastern Himalaya-Tibet is an exceptionally dynamic landscape\, where the Yarlung-Siang-Brahmaputra River cuts through the high Himalaya in a zone of extremely localized rapid erosion and rock uplift. It has been argued that this area represents some of the best evidence for a localized positive feedback between erosion and deformation on Earth. We investigate this hypothesis by using detrital geochronology and thermochronology of modern river sediments and Cenozoic foreland basin deposits to establish the relative timing of river capture and the onset of rapid erosion/exhumation. Results rule out Pliocene river capture or Quaternary climate change as triggers for rapid exhumation\, and instead point to a tectonic driver for extreme rock uplift rates. Quaternary megafloods (≥106 m3/s) sourced from valley blocking glaciers may have played an important role in eroding rapidly uplifted rock\, and in the geomorphic evolution of the Gorge and Tibetan plateau margin. We investigate the sedimentary record and hydraulics of outburst floods through the Gorge\, with implications for erosion and deposition in the largest source-to-sink sedimentary system on Earth. In the high-elevation source region\, hydraulic flood simulations\, field observations\, and flood sediment provenance studies suggest (1) great potential for megaflood erosion in the Gorge\, and (2) a lasting impact of megaflood deposits on the morphology and both river and hillslope processes in mountain landscapes. Previous studies show that megafloods have significantly altered landscapes in the sedimentary transfer zone between the headwaters and deepwater Bengal Fan and deposited material >2000 km offshore. Our ongoing work seeks to integrate geologic and human perspectives on flooding\, landscape change\, and sedimentation throughout this system\, including Indigenous knowledge. Taken together\, our findings show the profound legacy of episodic\, large magnitude floods on mountain valley processes and on the transmission and preservation of tectonic and climatic signals in the sedimentary record.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium: Lessons learned while searching for syntax in the brain
DESCRIPTION:Jon Brennnan\, Associate Professor of Linguistics\, will present \"Lessons learned while searching for syntax in the brain\" on Friday\, March 11\, at 4 pm via Zoom. \n\nABSTRACT\n\n“[T]here is absolutely no mapping to date that we understand in even the most vague sense.” So writes David Poeppel in 2012 about the connection between Linguistics and neurobiology. I discuss our attempts to meet this challenge in the domain of syntax and give some reasons to be (slightly) optimistic. This optimism is underwritten by the hard lessons learned over the last decade of research by ourselves and others that have forced us to (i) confront that the term “syntax” does not neatly map to neurobiology\, (ii) reconcile apparently competing theoretical frameworks for memory and prediction\, and (iii) carefully tease apart the multifaceted linguistic causes of neural effects that we measure in the lab.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CSAS Lecture | Registration and Resistance in Nineteenth Century Jaffna
DESCRIPTION:By sanctioning and tapping into a perceived local practice of slavery and legally constituting slaves\, Dutch colonial rulers in eighteenth century Northern Sri Lanka strengthened the power of the dominant caste Vellalar over their subordinates. British rule that conquered VOC controlled areas\, first in the guise of the East India Company (1796-1802) then under the Crown (1802-1948) introduced a number of measures\, acts\, and incentives to dismantle slavery as it was practiced in the entire island. This presentation focuses on the effects of slave registration in the northern province of Jaffna that began in earnest in 1818 during a phase of gradual abolition of slavery (from 1806 to 1844). Bureaucratization provided for some enslaved people grounds for negotiation and resistance and opened up possibilities for them to take control over their individual lives. In this presentation\, I will take two examples to illustrate the small spaces of resistance that were appearing in Jaffna society: the case of a bold young man riding the palanquin of his master\, fearless of the whip\; the case of a family of enslaved wearing jewels and standing proudly in front of the Nallur temple where they were prohibited from entering owing to their status.\n\nPlease register in advance for this Zoom webinar here: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMlde-hqTspHNJTe7y6LuUzimeCDsrFWYY6\n \n Nira Wickramasinghe is Chair and Professor of Modern South Asian studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands. Her research centers on issues of belonging and everyday life under colonialism in Sri Lanka and the Indian Ocean world. Her books include: *Slave in a Palanquin: Colonial Servitude and Resistance in Sri Lanka* (Columbia University Press 2020)\; *Sri Lanka in the Modern Age. A History* (Oxford University Press 2015)\; *Metallic Modern. Everyday machines in Colonial Sri Lanka* (Berghahn 2014)\, *L’Invention du Vêtement National au Sri Lanka* (Karthala 2006)\, *Dressing the Colonised Body *(Orient Longman 2003)\, *Civil Society in Sri Lanka* (Sage Publ. 2001). She has been\, inter alia\, a Fellow at the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies at Princeton University (2008-2009)\, British Academy Visiting Professor (2005) at the University of Oxford and Fulbright Senior Scholar at ICAS\, New York University (2003-2004). Her current research on enslaved people detaches Lanka from the subcontinent to insert the island in the Indian Ocean world.\n \n Nira Wickramasinghe\, grew up and schooled in Paris\, and received her D.Phil in modern history from the University of Oxford (1989). She is presently spearheading a small academic press in Sri Lanka called *Tambapanni Academic Publishers*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Celebrating Forty Years of Armenian Studies | Armenian Transformations\, 1981-2021: How Forty Years of Michigan Armenian Studies Looked at Imperial Collapse\, Ethnic War\, and the Rebirth of Independence

When the chair was established\, Armenia was a small Soviet republic\, and half of the world's Armenians lived in scattered diasporic communities. Within a decade the Soviet empire had disintegrated\, and Armenia became an independent state beset by hostile neighbors. The republic survived despite losses of population and economic distress. A thriving civil society defied the rule of oligarchs and self-serving politicians\, and in 2018 crowds marched to the capital to make a democratic revolution. Just as they rebounded from genocide more than 100 years ago\, Armenians once again must deal with loss and find a path to renewal.\n \n Examining the recent past of Armenians in the homeland and in the diaspora\, three Manoogian chairholders – Ronald Grigor Suny\, Gerard Libaridian\, and Hakem Al-Rustom – will present short talks on the turbulent events of the last four decades.\n \n \"A Republic\, If You Can Keep It”\n Gerard Libaridian\, Professor Emeritus\; former Alex Manoogian Professor in Modern Armenian History (2001-12)\, University of Michigan\n \n “The Making of Modern Armenia: From Soviet Republic to Precarious Present”\n Ronald Grigor Suny\, William H. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The 6th Annual Robert J. Berkhofer Jr. Lecture on Native American Studies: A Conversation with Robin Kimmerer
DESCRIPTION:The Native American Studies program at the University of Michigan invites you to the sixth annual Berkhofer Lecture on Native American Studies to be given virtually by Robin Kimmerer.\n\nRobin Wall Kimmerer is a mother\, scientist\, decorated professor\, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. She is the author of Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom\, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants\, which has earned Kimmerer wide acclaim. Her first book\, Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses\, was awarded the John Burroughs Medal for outstanding nature writing\, and her other work has appeared in Orion\, Whole Terrain\, and numerous scientific journals. She tours widely and has been featured on NPR’s On Being with Krista Tippett and in 2015 addressed the general assembly of the United Nations on the topic of “Healing Our Relationship with Nature.” Kimmerer lives in Syracuse\, New York\, where she is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology\, and the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment\, whose mission is to create programs that draw on the wisdom of both indigenous and scientific knowledge for our shared goals of sustainability. www.robinwallkimmerer.com/\n\nThe past five Berkhofer Lectures\, featuring Tommy Orange\, author of the bestselling New York Times novel There There\, were grand affairs\, with some 300 people in attendance each year. These audiences consisted of students and faculty from U-M\, interested residents of Ann Arbor\, Native Americans from the Metro-Detroit area\, and with the event now online\, audiences worldwide. In asking Robin Kimmerer\, a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology\, and the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment we seek to shift the focus of the Berkhofer lecture to highlight emerging indigenous literary talent.\n\nThe Berkhofer Lecture series (named for a former U-M professor and founder of the field of Native American studies) was established in 2014 by an alumni gift from the Dan and Carmen Brenner family of Seattle\, Washington. In close consultation with the Brenners\, Native American Studies decided to create a public lecture series featuring prominent\, marquee speakers who would draw audiences from different communities (faculty and students\, Ann Arbor and Detroit\, and Michigan tribal communities as well as writers and readers of all persuasions). Native American students at U-M have consistently expressed their desire to make Native Americans more visible both on campus and off\, and we believe that this lecture takes a meaningful step in that direction. Additionally\, because of the statewide publicity it generates\, we think it is already becoming another recruitment incentive for Native American students. It goes without saying that the speakers we are inviting provide tremendous value to the mission and work of Native American Studies at U-M. \n\nPlease register here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Kreg1LmxTCuWxF61YyGEJg
