SUMMARY:Film Screening:Black Islam in the Americas Series. *Two Gods* Free Screening
DESCRIPTION:This film screening is part of our “Black Islam in the Americas” Series\, presented by the Global Islamic Studies Center (GISC) at the University of Michigan! This series will explore the history of Black Islam and the experiences of Black Muslim communities in the Americas\, including North America\, Latin America\, and the Caribbean.\n \nFrom March 4th-18th\, you will have the opportunity to watch *Two Gods* (2020)\, a film by Zeshawn Ali and Aman Ali\, on demand and for free. Pre-order your free tickets now: http://watch.eventive.org/gisctwogods\n\n---\n*Two Gods* is the story of Hanif\, a Black Muslim casket maker and ritual body washer in Newark\, New Jersey\, who takes two young men under his wing to teach them how to live better lives\, illustrating the complexities of everyday Muslim community life.\n\nYear: 2020 | Run Time: 82 minutes | Language: English | Director: Zeshawn Ali | Producer: Aman Ali\n \nAn intimate documentary about faith\, renewal\, and healing\, *TWO GODS* follows a Muslim casket maker and ritual body washer in New Jersey\, as he takes two young men under his wing to teach them how to live better lives. Inside a corner casket shop in East Orange\, laboring amid the sawdust and the long pine boxes\, casket makers work with mentors in the Islamic burial tradition. Hanif\, a Black Muslim casket maker who finds spiritual grounding in his work\, brings two boys from the local community under his tutelage\; 12-year-old Furquan and 17-year-old Naz\, neither of whom have fathers at home. Hanif teaches Furquan and Naz the practices of Islamic burial rituals as they assist him with his work. Having formerly served time in prison\, Hanif continues to grapple with past mistakes and new challenges\, while his faith and community helps him guide his young charges on their own paths toward healing and embracing life.\n \nShot in a striking black-and-white\, *TWO GODS* explores the juxtaposition of grief and the rituals of death with the vibrancy and potential of adolescence. The documentary turns an empathetic lens on Muslim American stories\, ultimately crafting a moving portrait of both the intimate moments and the complexities of the everyday Muslim American experience.\n---\n\nOn March 17th\, GISC will host *Two Gods* filmmakers Zeshawn Ali and Aman Ali for a filmmaker Q&A. This conversation will be moderated by local Detroit filmmaker and GISC Fellow Razi Jafri. RSVP: http://bit.ly/GISCTwoGods\n \nJoin us for the rest of the 'Black Islam in the Americas' series:\n \nOn March 29that 1:00 PM ET\, GISC will host Dr. Su'ad Abdul Khabeer and Dr. Rasul Miller for a lecture on Black Islam in the Americas\, with a focus on the United States. Dr. Su’ad Abdul Khabeer is a scholar\, artist\, activist\, and author of* Muslim Cool: Race\, Religion\, and Hip Hop in the United States* (2016). She is an associate professor of American Culture and Director of the Arab and Muslim American Studies program at the University of Michigan. She received her Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from Princeton University\, is a graduate of the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University\, and completed the Islamic Studies diploma program of the Institute at Abu Nour University (Damascus). In her most recent work\, Umi’s Archive\, Dr. Abdul Khabeer examines the intersections of official history and the untold stories of Black women and Black Muslims through the lens of her mother’s life. Umi means mother in Arabic\, and Dr. Abdul Khabeer examines her mother’s photographic and literary archives\, and so the digital exhibition series is Umi's Archive. The project sees everyday Black women as people who know things we all need to know. Dr. Rasul Miller's work looks into Black Muslim communities in the Atlantic world\, Black radicalism and its impact on social and cultural movements in the twentieth-century U.S.\, Black internationalism\, and West African intellectual history. Dr. Miller's current book project\, *Black Muslim Cosmopolitanism: The Global Character of New York City's Black Muslim Movements*\, examines the Black internationalist origins of early twentieth-century Black Sunni Muslim congregations in and around New York City\, and the cultural and political orientations that characterized subsequent communities of Black Muslims in the U.S. who built robust\, transnational networks as they actively engaged traditions and communities of Muslims on the African continent. RSVP: http://bit.ly/BlackIslamLect\n \nThis Black Islam in the Americas Series is brought to you by the Global Islamic Studies Center\, and cosponsored by American Culture\, Arab and Muslim American Studies\, the Center for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\, the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, the Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, the African Studies Center\, the LSA Office for Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion\, and the International Institute all at the University of Michigan. This series is also brought to you by The Maydan at the George Mason University’s Ali Vural Ak Center for Global Islamic Studies\, and the Muslim Studies Program at the Michigan State University. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Dutch Studies: A Decolonial Revision
DESCRIPTION:In 1956\, 11 years after proclaiming Indonesia’s independence from 350 years of Dutch occupation\, the first president of Indonesia\, Sukarno\, received an honorary doctor of civil law degree conferred by U-M President Harlan Hatcher. As we celebrate fifty years of Dutch at the University of Michigan with this exhibit\, we trace our paths toward a new frame for Dutch Studies — one that emphasizes colonial repair and rethinks which voices matter. View the exhibit in the north lobby of the Hatcher Library.\n\nAbout the exhibit:\n\nIn the section titled “A New Canon\,\" the exhibit includes an empty space where the novel Max Havelaar by Multatuli would be\, the “top 10” book touted to have “ended colonialism.\" With the empty space\, we acknowledge the book’s white saviorism that rang in the new era of colonial oppression and cultural genocide called the “(Dutch) Ethical Policy.\" The books in our new canon crowd out Multatuli’s empty space in the same way that the other materials on display\, such as the sound of the carillon score of Gold Coast composer\, Charles E. Graves\, or the voice of Indonesian forerunner of colonial reparations\, Jeffry Pondaag\, drowns out the spaces left blank by Willem Janszoon Blaeu’s maps\, which reside in our U-M Library collections but are purposely not displayed.\n\nThe exhibit continues with collections of materials that show the Dutch program’s comparative approach to Dutch Studies\, one that connects histories and cultures and creates understanding through familiar frames of reference. Our collection of Anne Frank materials is supplemented with U-M Professor of History Rudolf Mrázek’s comparative work on the “model camps” of Theresienstadt (Nazi) and Boven Digoel (Dutch). A translation of Leendert van der Valk’s article “1619” on the Dutch foundations of U.S. slavery lies next to Marjolein van Pagee’s Banda: De Genocide van Jan Pieterszoon Coen\, an analysis of the 1621 Dutch genocide and enslavement of the Bandanese people.\n\nThe last part of the exhibit highlights the speakers scheduled to deliver lectures at an end-of-semester anniversary symposium.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium: The role of the striatum in habits
DESCRIPTION:Habits are a fundamental part of animal life. In the brain\, areas that form a network with the dorsolateral striatum have been shown to be critical for the formation and execution of habits. In this talk\, I will outline our efforts to help understand how exactly the striatum participates in habits and how habits themselves might be detected and observed. First\, patterns of neural activity recorded in animals during learning show that the striatum represents habits with\, in part\, a burst of energy at the beginning of a behavior. We find that this activity causes behavior to be fast and vigorous\, with behavioral vigor emerging as a key defining characteristic of habits. The increased activity in the striatum also causes behavior to be insensitive to the value of the behavioral outcome\, a traditional measure of habits. However\, additional studies show that the outcome-value assay of habits is highly context-dependent\, thus casting doubt on how it can be used. Further studies test the question of whether this striatum activity works in a forward-planning manner to help behavior be optimal and adaptive\, or instead if it serves to allow animals to keep doing what has worked in the past. Initial evidence finds somewhat surprising support for the first possibility. Collectively\, the data presented will hopefully shine some new light into the process by which habits might best be studied in the lab as well further clarify the role that the striatum serves for habits.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Useful Bullshit: Constitutions in Chinese Politics and Society
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance for this Zoom webinar here: https://myumi.ch/Aw1Ew\n\nIn this talk\, Dr. Diamant takes a look at what happened when the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) encouraged millions of citizens to read\, listen to\, pose questions about\, and suggest revisions to drafts of new constitutions\, and the implications of such constitutional talk for how we understand constitutionalism and political legitimacy. In promulgating constitutions and then allowing people to talk about them\, the CCP opened up political space for people to criticize the party\, the revolution\, and the constitution\, which they did in a variety of ways. They pressed authorities to clarify the meaning of words\, phrases\, and ideas in constitutions and proposed numerous suggestions for revision. From the very beginning many called out the Party for engaging in what the philosopher Harry Frankfurt called “bullshit.” Despite these reputational costs\, the CCP continues to make constitutions a critical element of its governing strategy. At the same time\, citizens continue to refer to constitutions in their contestations with the state despite knowing that its articles are not enforced. This talk examines both the bullshit element of constitutions as well as why they are useful for the CCP and citizens.\n \nNeil J. Diamant is the Walter E. Beach ’56 Chair in Political Science and Professor of Asian Law and Society at Dickinson College (Carlisle\, PA). In addition to \"Useful Bullshit: Constitutions in Chinese Politics and Society\" (Cornell University Press\, 2021)\, Diamant is the author of \"Revolutionizing the Family: Politics\, Love\, and Divorce in Urban and Rural China\, 1949-1968\" (University of California Press\, 2000)\, \"Embattled Glory: Veterans\, Military Families\, and the Politics of Patriotism in China\, 1949-2007\" (Rowman & Littlefield\, 2009)\, as well as the co-author of \"The Politics of Veteran Benefits in the 20th Century: A Comparative History\" (Cornell University Press\, 2020). He also co-edited \"Engaging the Law in China: State\, Society\, and Possibilities for Justice\" (Stanford University Press\, 2005). He received his PhD in Political Science from the University of California\, Berkeley.

SUMMARY:Other:Establishing Compositional Control in 2D and 3D Metal Sulfide Electrocatalysts to Drive CO2 and CO Conversion to Alcohols
DESCRIPTION: Development of materials that address the growing dichotomy of simultaneously increasing energy demands and carbon emissions is an imperative that has progressively affected energy-related research efforts. An emerging technical avenue in this area is the conversion of vastly abundant renewable energy sources that can be harnessed and directed towards synthesis of traditionally fossil fuel-based products from atmospheric feedstocks like CO2. To this end\, our work establishes structure—function relationships for materials within the versatile classes of MX2 (M = Mo\, W\; X = S\, Se) and Chevrel-Phase (CP) MyMo6X8 (M = alkali\, alkaline\, transition or post-transition metal\; y = 0-4\; X = S\, Se\, Te) chalcogenides. The molybdenum sulfide structures from both families exhibit exceptional promise as CO2R catalysts. Furthermore\, we have identified the CP catalyst framework as being selective towards the electrochemical reduction of CO2 and CO to methanol (only major liquid-phase product) under applied potentials as mild as -0.4 V vs RHE. Reactivity toward electrochemical reduction of CO2 and CO to methanol is correlated with increased population of chalcogen states\, as confirmed via X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy. Overall\, this work seeks to unravel optimally reactive novel small-molecule reduction catalyst compositions. \nJesus Velazquez (University of California\, Davis)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Functional MRI 2021-22 Speaker Series with Kawin Setsompop\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nAdvances in MRI’s instrumentation\, data acquisition\, and reconstruction algorithms have opened up exciting opportunities for dramatic gains in MR image encoding efficiency\, particularly through the use of continuous volumetric data acquisition strategies. In this talk\, I will provide an overview of the on-going research in my lab in developing technologies in this direction. The goal of our work has been in moving towards more precise MR imaging\, or ‘precision MRI’\, where the targets have been in achieving: i) rapid and comprehensive\, high-resolution brain exam with a wealth of precise quantitative tissue parameters and multi-tissue compartment information\, and ii) high-speed mesoscale structural and functional imaging of the brain\, where the imaging can be done precisely\, free of the typical distortion and blurring artifacts that have plagued standard EPI and spiral acquisitions.\n\nYou can attend in person: 4 p.m. Chemistry & Dow Willard H Laboratory (Central Campus)\, Room 1300.\n\nYou can attend via Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96633733558\, passcode: 721418

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Positive Links Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 15\, 2022 \n4:00-5:00 p.m. ET \nFree and open to the public\, registration required: https://positiveorgs.bus.umich.edu/events/the-power-of-flexing-growing-into-your-best-self/\n\nPositive Links: \n\nThe Positive Links Speaker Series\, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations\, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics\, students\, staff\, and leaders. \n\nAbout the talk: \n\nOne of the best things you can say about someone is that they continued to grow\, develop\, change\, improve\, and evolve throughout their life. Indeed\, personal growth is crucial if you want to become like that role model you most admire\, have more influence as a leader\, create better relationships with those joining you on a task\, and ultimately\, to bring positive change into our troubled world. \n\nIn September\, I achieved a lifelong goal of publishing a book\, The Power of Flexing\, that summarizes decades of research and teaching on this very topic. This talk brings that book alive by sharing some of the stories of people who have put growth prominently on their agenda\, suggesting key practices that facilitate growth for anyone anywhere\, and highlighting what companies can do to enable the growth journeys of their employees. \n\nAbout Ashford: \n\nSusan (Sue) Ashford is the Michael and Susan Jandernoa Professor in the Management and Organizations group at Michigan Ross. She served previously on the faculty of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and received her MS and PhD degrees from Northwestern University. \n\nSue’s passion is using her teaching and research work to help people to be maximally effective in their work lives\, with an emphasis on self-leadership\, proactivity\, change from below\, and leadership and its development. She teaches across several programs at Ross\, in the Leading Women Executives program of the Corporate Leadership Center\, and for various companies. Sue recently published a book that lives out her passion entitled The Power of Flexing: How to Use Small Daily Experiments to Create Big Life-Changing Growth (Harper Collins Business\, 2021). \n\nSue is an award-winning scholar\, having published papers in the fields’ best journals in the areas of leadership development and leader effectiveness\, middle management voice and issue selling\, job insecurity\, and individual proactivity (e.g.\, self-management and feedback seeking). Her research has been summarized as advice for managers in the Harvard Business Review\, the Harvard Business Review blog\, New York Magazine\, and The Conversation. Sue is a Fellow of the Academy of Management and was awarded the prestigious Career Achievement Award for Distinguished Scholarly Contributions to Management by that Association in 2017. \n\nHost: \n\nDave M. Mayer\, Center for Positive Organizations Research Director\; John H. Mitchell Professor of Business Ethics\; Chair of Management and Organizations Area \n\nSeries Sponsors: \n\nThe Center for Positive Organizations thanks Sanger Leadership Center\, Tauber Institute for Global Operations\, Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies\, and Diane (BA ‘73) and Paul (MBA ‘75) Jones for their support of the 2021-22 Positive Links Speaker Series. \n\nSeries Promotional Partners: \n\nAdditionally\, we thank Ann Arbor SPARK and the Managerial and Organizational Cognition (MOC) Division of the Academy of Management for their Positive Links Speaker Series promotional partnerships.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MMP Presents: Sara Aronowitz: A Planning Theory of Belief
DESCRIPTION:Sara Aronowitz is a former UM grad student who's now at the University of Arizona. Sara will be giving the talk over zoom (info below) entitled \n\"A Planning Theory of Belief\" on Tuesday\, March 15 at 4:30pm EST.\n\nAbstract: What does it mean to hold a belief? Some ways of speaking suggest that to hold a belief is to have something in your mind: beliefs are things we acquire\, defend\, recover\, and so on (Abelson\, 1986). That is\, believing is a matter of being in a state of having a thing. I will argue for an alternative: believing is something we do. First\, I'll show that state-based accounts lead us into problems in two related areas: believing in between active occurrent episodes\, and incoherent sets of beliefs. I'll then present an analogy between belief and planning that fleshes out what it would mean for belief to be an activity.\n\nMore about Sara: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~skaron/index.html\n\nZoom Info [PLEASE NOTE PASSCODE]\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91910722985\n\nMeeting ID: 919 1072 2985\nPasscode: MMP\nOne tap mobile\n+13126266799\,\,91910722985#\,\,\,\,*322120# US (Chicago)\n+16468769923\,\,91910722985#\,\,\,\,*322120# US (New York)
