SUMMARY:Exhibition:Dutch Studies: A Decolonial Revision
DESCRIPTION:In 1956\, 11 years after proclaiming Indonesia’s independence from 350 years of Dutch occupation\, the first president of Indonesia\, Sukarno\, received an honorary doctor of civil law degree conferred by U-M President Harlan Hatcher. As we celebrate fifty years of Dutch at the University of Michigan with this exhibit\, we trace our paths toward a new frame for Dutch Studies — one that emphasizes colonial repair and rethinks which voices matter. View the exhibit in the north lobby of the Hatcher Library.\n\nAbout the exhibit:\n\nIn the section titled “A New Canon\,\" the exhibit includes an empty space where the novel Max Havelaar by Multatuli would be\, the “top 10” book touted to have “ended colonialism.\" With the empty space\, we acknowledge the book’s white saviorism that rang in the new era of colonial oppression and cultural genocide called the “(Dutch) Ethical Policy.\" The books in our new canon crowd out Multatuli’s empty space in the same way that the other materials on display\, such as the sound of the carillon score of Gold Coast composer\, Charles E. Graves\, or the voice of Indonesian forerunner of colonial reparations\, Jeffry Pondaag\, drowns out the spaces left blank by Willem Janszoon Blaeu’s maps\, which reside in our U-M Library collections but are purposely not displayed.\n\nThe exhibit continues with collections of materials that show the Dutch program’s comparative approach to Dutch Studies\, one that connects histories and cultures and creates understanding through familiar frames of reference. Our collection of Anne Frank materials is supplemented with U-M Professor of History Rudolf Mrázek’s comparative work on the “model camps” of Theresienstadt (Nazi) and Boven Digoel (Dutch). A translation of Leendert van der Valk’s article “1619” on the Dutch foundations of U.S. slavery lies next to Marjolein van Pagee’s Banda: De Genocide van Jan Pieterszoon Coen\, an analysis of the 1621 Dutch genocide and enslavement of the Bandanese people.\n\nThe last part of the exhibit highlights the speakers scheduled to deliver lectures at an end-of-semester anniversary symposium.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Presentation:Approach Matters: Community-Driven Research as a Path to Health Equity
DESCRIPTION:Across the spectrum of research approaches that seek to involve communities\, not all are alike. When researchers incorporate broad community participation—especially when they emphasize conversation and community voices—they often find their projects are not only more equitable but more successful. Community members offer critical insight into approaches and interventions that will work best in local contexts.\n\nJoin us Thursday\, March 24 from 9-10am for a conversation that centers the voices of our community partners and their University of Michigan partners as they describe co-design and co-creation processes.\n\nRegister for the Seminar: umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_3TCqnC9qTMC9JjMGSVA7kg

SUMMARY:Exhibition:How to Build a Disaster Proof House
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tracey Snelling’s *How to Build a Disaster Proof House* contemplates the uncertainty\, displacement\, and disenfranchisement that frames the present day. How do we find a safe place\, protected from bad weather and circumstance\, in an era of floods\, fires\,violence\, abuse and pandemics? \n\nSnelling finds a route for escape by constructing big and small sculptural worlds\, private and public. \n\nSnelling is at U-M this winter term as the current Roman Witt Artist in Residence. During her residency\, the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and its Osterman Common Room will function as a “laboratory\,” or open studio\, where visitors can see the artist’s creative process as the installation evolves\, and the rooms change\, debunking any presumptive myth of permanence. \n\nSnelling’s pop aesthetic incorporates prefab objects\, bright colors\, light\, video\, and sound. The work is disarming in its exuberance\, reassuring us there is no such thing as a zombie under the bed\, while at the same time\, making room to process the very real and unsettling world in which we live. \n\nThrough workshops guided by Snelling\, U-M students and others from our local and outlying communities will create small-scale rooms or dwellings…”a room of one’s own” reflective of their personal feelings and ideas about home\, safety\, and dreams. \n\nThe experience of crafting together articulates the fundamental importance of our relationship to one another. The myriad of rooms will be displayed ongoing in the Osterman Common Room\, as well as becoming part of an installation on wheels\, a mobile unit meant to travel throughout town.\n\nThe mobile installation contemplates how we measure our sense of belonging\, or where we come from\, in a world of ongoing transitions and migrations. \n\nSnelling’s project fosters belonging despite all of the different ways we live and co-exist\, beyond structures and times of remoteness. Concurrently\, the installation embraces our everyday existence and the power of our individual and collective imagination. \n\nIn her previous 2017 Institute for the Humanities Gallery exhibition *Here and There*\, Snelling pushed up against the challenges of economic inequities\, racial biases\, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people. \n\n “The ongoing lack of affordable health care\, systematic racism\, class division\, economic downturn\, and the impacts of climate change all contribute to global poverty and housing issues…\,\" states Snelling. \"By working on this project with U-M students and communities regionally\, I hope to not only raise awareness of housing precarity but also be responsive together as a community...to the challenges facing our fellow citizens.”\n\n-Amanda Krugliak Arts Curator\n\nThe overall project *How To Build a Disaster Proof House* is curated by Amanda Krugiak\, Arts Curator and Assistant Director of Arts Programming at the Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with Chrisstina Hamilton\, Director of the Roman Witt Residency Program at the Stamps School. Tracey Snelling is the Stamps 2022 Roman Witt Artist in Residence.\n\nThe project has included workshops with groups across the U-M campus and further afield in the regional community at spaces including the Ann Arbor Art Center (A2AC)\, The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County at the Robert J. Delonis Center and Freighthouse Day Shelter\, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti\; and shelter for New Americans in Hamtramck. Thanks to U-M student and Delonis caseworker Alexzandra McCrum\, A2AC Gallery Director Ashley Miller\, Stamps MDes students and Stamps professor Nick Tobier for all of your guidance and help facilitating these outreach engagements.\n\nThe Disaster Proof mobile unit will be exhibited at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival in the Michigan Theater\, Tuesday March 22 - Sunday March 27\, 2022. Snelling’s short film A Poem is a City\, created in collaboration with Arthur Debert\, will be in competition as part of this year’s AAFF programming. A *Disaster Proof* community installation will appear at the Ann Arbor Art Center beginning in mid-April in connection with the A2AC Gallery’s inaugural exhibition\, *Sharing Space* (May 20 - July 8\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Imaginative Activism of Digital Citizens Symposium
DESCRIPTION:This symposium is a collaboration between the University of Michigan’s professor of Art & Design and Digital Studies Irina Aristarkhova and UCLA’s Slavist and curator Dr. Sasha Razor. It is focused on events that took place during the summer of 2020 in Belarus\, bringing them into a broader discussion around digital citizenship\, activism\, and the new emerging scholarship. The symposium aims to introduce new concepts and approaches to imaginative activism\, grounded in critical digital studies\, feminist and new media theory\, digital curation\, contemporary art history\, and information studies\, in addition to the study of democracy and the Eastern European region.\n\nDescription: In the summer of 2020\, many countries experienced protests against police violence and demanded democratic social change. A small country in Eastern Europe - Belarus - became one of the centers of global activism. Activists\, IT professionals\, artists\, designers and neighbors teamed up to coordinate\, connect\, and amplify their work on digital platforms\, such as Telegram\, Instagram and Youtube\, to overthrow the dictatorial regime. They created visual representation and identity of a social movement that now exists largely in digital formats and often made for digital platforms that themselves could be compromised and used against them. What is the role of scholars and librarians who study citizen activism\, contemporary art and digital culture? What kind of new questions and solutions are posed by today’s digital citizens? Reimagining what these tools enable and how they can be used\, and researching new forms of “imaginative activism\,” are the primary goals of this interdisciplinary symposium and the digital exhibition curated by Sasha Razor at Michigan Libraries. \n\nSymposium Program\n\nPART 1 (10am-12pm)\n\"Digital Activism Roundtable of Artists\, \nDesigners and Cyber-activists\"\nYuliana Shemetovets \nAndrew Maximov\nYanina Sazanovich\nMaxim Tyminko\nAnastasia Kostyugova \nModerated by Sasha Razor\n\nPART 2 (1-2:45pm)\n\"Digital Citizenship and\nIts Scholarly Discontents\" Panel\nIrina Aristarkhova\nFee Christoph\nand Kendra Eaton\nElena Gapova\nGeorgy Mamedov\nModerated by Mikhail Krutikov\n\nPART 3 (3-4pm)\nLibrarian Roundtable: \"Saving the Future\,\nArchiving Digital Content\"\nBrendan Nieubuurt \nJamie Vander Broek \nAnne Cong-Huyen\nAnna Rakityanskaya\nModerated by Igor Pilshchikov\n\nPART 4 (4:15-5:15pm)\nExhibition Launch: \"The Code of Presence: Belarusian Protest Embroideries and Textile Patterns\" \nRufina Bazlova\nLesia Pcholka\nDaria Sazanovich\nYuliya Tsviatkova \nDiscussant: Alisa Lozhkina \nExhibition Curator and Moderator: Sasha Razor\n\n\nRegister for the Zoom Link here: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJcpfuCspj0oEtzVzusHe2MCx64QCDmp7rCR

Activists\, IT professionals\, artists\, designers\, and neighbors teamed up to coordinate\, connect\, and amplify their work on digital platforms\, such as Telegram\, Instagram\, and Youtube\, to overthrow the dictatorial regime. They created visual representation and identity of a social movement that now exists largely in digital formats and often made for digital platforms that themselves could be compromised and used against them. \nWhat is the role of scholars and librarians who study citizen activism\, contemporary art\, and digital culture? What kind of new questions and solutions are posed by today’s digital citizens? Reimagining what these tools enable and how they can be used\, and researching new forms of “imaginative activism\,” are the primary goals of this interdisciplinary symposium and the digital exhibition curated by Sasha Razor at Michigan Libraries.\n PART 1 (10am-12pm): Digital Activism Roundtable of Artists\, Designers and Cyber-activists\nYuliana Shemetovets Andrew MaximovYanina SazanovichMaxim TyminkoAnastasia Kostyugova Moderated by Sasha RazorPART 2 (1-2:45pm): Digital Citizenship andIts Scholarly Discontents\nIrina AristarkhovaFee Christoph and Kendra EatonElena GapovaGeorgy MamedovModerated by Mikhail KrutikovPART 3 (3-4pm) Librarian Roundtable: Saving the Future\,Archiving Digital ContentBrendan Nieubuurt Jamie Vander Broek Anne Cong-HuyenAnna RakityanskayaModerated by Igor PilshchikovPART 4 (4:15-5:15pm) Exhibition Launch: The Code of Presence: Belarusian Protest Embroideries and Textile PatternsRufina Bazlova Lesia Pcholka Daria Sazanovich Yuliya Tsviatkova Discussant: Alisa Lozhkina Exhibition Curator and Moderator: Sasha Razor

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Music of Arab America
DESCRIPTION:The music of Arab American communities over the last 100-plus years shows a constant navigation of tradition and innovation. The first half of this presentation introduces some of the core elements of Arab music with examples and demonstrations before moving to an overview of how these musical ideas evoke both memory and novelty. The musical history shows creativity and adaptation alongside the assertion of a communal identity\, forces that can be in tension\, especially as musicians target larger audiences.\n\nChristopher Witulski is an assistant teaching professor of ethnomusicology at Bowling Green State University. He is the author of two books on music and religion in Morocco (The Gnawa Lions\, Indiana University Press and Focus: Music and Religion of Morocco\, Routledge Press) and teaches on topics related to Arab music. His recent work is building a collaborative project exploring music within Arab America.\n\nThis is the fourth lecture of a six-lecture series. The subject of the series is Music in Detroit and Michigan: The Legend Continues. The next lecture in the series will take place March 31\, 2022. The title is The History and Influence of Motown Music. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects\, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the lecture.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Preferences for Interactive Autonomy
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:\nIn human-robot interaction or more generally multi-agent systems\, we often have decentralized agents that need to perform a task together. In such settings\, it is crucial to have the ability to anticipate the actions of other agents. Without this ability\, the agents are often doomed to perform very poorly. Humans are usually good at this\, and it is mostly because we can have good estimates of what other agents are trying to do. We want to give such an ability to robots through reward learning and partner modeling. In this talk\, I am going to talk about active learning approaches to this problem and how we can leverage preference data to learn objectives. I am going to show how preferences can help reward learning in the settings where demonstration data may fail\, and how partner-modeling enables decentralized agents to cooperate efficiently.\n\nBIO:\nErdem Bıyık is a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate in the Electrical Engineering department at Stanford. He has received his B.Sc. degree from Bilkent University\, Turkey\, in 2017\; and M.Sc. degree from Stanford University in 2019. He is interested in enabling robots to actively learn from various forms of human feedback and designing altruistic robot policies to improve the efficiency of multi-agent systems both in cooperative and competitive settings. He also worked at Google as a research intern in 2021 where he adapted his active robot learning algorithms to recommender systems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomechanical Strain Sensors and FRESH 3D Bioprinted Microfluidics for Tissue Engineering and Disease Modeling
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe pursuit of an ideal model system to study the pathophysiology of vascular disease has included the use of tissue engineered blood vessels (TEBV)\, vascularizing engineered volumetric tissue\, silicone-based “organ-on-a-chip” platforms\, and tissue decellularization\; yet we are still far from generating engineered vascular tissue that recapitulates native physiology. 3D bioprinting has led to additive manufacturing approaches for creating fluidic channels\; however\, it remains challenging to produce continuous networks with vessels ranging from large (>6 mm) to small (<1 mm) diameter using soft native-like extracellular matrix (ECM) that mimics the mechanical properties\, geometric organization\, and compositional complexity of the cellular and extracellular microenvironment. An ideal engineering strategy would combine the advantages of additive manufacturing with the controlled fluid flow achieved by organ-on-a-chip platforms\, and the ECM structure\, composition\, and biomechanics of decellularized tissue. In this presentation I will highlight recent work on developing i) a fluorescence-based mechanical strain sensor for mapping 3D surface strain of contractile cells\, developing tissue\, and engineered blood vessels\, ii) 3D bioprinted ECM microfluidics using Freeform Reversible Embedding of Suspended Hydrogels (FRESH)\, and iii) an in-process imaging platform for error detection and 3D gauging using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Together\, this work highlights the exciting potential for FRESH printed ECM-based microfluidic scaffolds and vascular tissue engineering that will set the foundation for future work studying how ECM composition\, mechanical properties\, and fluid flow contribute to vascular disease. In addition to vascular biology\, the collagen-based microfluidics and fluorescence strain sensor are platform technologies amenable to other organ systems\, and can be utilized to study cell proliferation\, metastasis\, ECM remodeling\, and biomechanics in a 3D environment.\nBio:\nDr. Shiwarski received a B.S. in Cell Biology and Biochemistry from Bucknell University and a Ph.D. in Biology and Neuroscience from Carnegie Mellon University. During his doctoral research\, he investigated how opioid receptor membrane trafficking events influence pain inhibition and opioid addiction using advanced live cell fluorescence imaging and analysis techniques to track exocytic and endocytic events. In 2017 he began a postdoctoral fellowship in Dr. Adam Feinberg’s Lab in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University where he has: 1) studied how biomechanical forces are essential for cellular and tissue physiology by developing a fluorescence-based nanomechanical biosensor to map real-time changes in cell and tissue strain\, 2) was a key contributor on the development of the 3D bioprinting technology FRESH 2.0\,  which provided the ability to print unmodified collagen into functional components of the human heart\, and 3) designed and published a series of open-source hardware and software platforms for 3D bioprinting\, bi-axial mechanical testing\, and in-process monitoring for additive manufacturing. Dr. Shiwarski has a broad background in cell biology\, quantitative imaging\, and tissue engineering with specific expertise in live cell fluorescence imaging\, cellular biosensors\, computational image analysis\, 3D bioprinting\, and cellular biomechanics. His future work focuses on engineering FRESH printed ECM-based microfluidic scaffolds as a platform technology for vascular tissue engineering that will set the foundation for studying how vascular smooth muscle cell differentiation\, ECM composition\, mechanical properties\, and fluid flow contribute to hypertensive vascular disease. \n\nZoom Link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96508834308\n\nOrganized by:\nDr. Brendon Baker\,\nAssistant Professor\, Biomedical Engineering\n\nDr. David Nordsletten\,\nAssociate Professor\, Department of Biomedical Engineering and Cardiac Surgery

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: \"The Things to Come\": Francisco Solano Faces Irremediable Humanity
DESCRIPTION:Format: This lecture is presented in hybrid format: in-person in 1014 Tisch Hall and virtual via Zoom webinar (register: https://myumi.ch/bRb7x).\n\nDescription: Lima\, Peru\, 1605. What matters when the coincidence of an apocalyptic sermon by a famous holy man and a visiting orchestrator of devotion turns out to have been largely invented to serve the needs of the latter and the readers for whom he dreamed? Perched between the prospects of recovery and oblivion\, a public mindset emerges that illuminates the early modern Spanish world and speaks to our times.\n\nBiography: Kenneth Mills (D.Phil Oxon\, 1992)\, J. Frederick Hoffman Professor of History\, investigates the histories of the early modern Iberian world and of colonial Latin America. His emphases fall on religious and cultural transformations\, and on the interpretation of people's thinking and interactions within idiosyncratically and fragmentarily reported episodes. Professor Mills's scholarship is notable for its trans-oceanic vision and its cross-disciplinary curiosity. His recent published works include the multi-author and multi-discipline Lexikon of the Hispanic Baroque: Transatlantic Exchange and Transformation\, coordinated and edited with Evonne Levy (University of Texas Press\, 2013).\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Howard R. Marsh Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of a tragedy\, journalists leave. The event transitioned from news to normality. The trauma lingers and sediments among survivors and citizens. The silence we\, journalists\, inflict is a type of violence that neglects communities that suffer. The news’ chain production normalizes the trauma. Let’s discuss a proposal to stop the cycle.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Lydia Lunch / No Wave
DESCRIPTION:Lydia Lunch is a writer\, musician\, photographer\, controversial spoken word artist\, and one of the primary instigators of the \"No Wave\" movement of the late 1970&#039\;s in New York City. Her work typically features provocative and confrontational noise music delivery (she was the lead guitarist and singer of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks\, an influential No Wave band)\, and has maintained an anti-commercial ethic\, operating independently of major labels and distributors. \nNo Wave — which was informed by both The Surrealists and the Avant Jazz music of the 1960&#039\;s and included artists\, musicians\, filmmakers\, and general trouble makers — was the offspring of Taxi Driver\, Times Square\, The Son of Sam\, the blackout of ’77\, the dud of The Summer of Love\, Charles Manson\, the Vietnam War\, Kent State and the Kennedy Assassinations.\n According to Lunch\, \"it was a mad collective of death defiant miscreants desperate to rebel against the apathetic complacency of a zombie nation dumbed down by sit-coms\, disco\, fast food\, and professional wrestling. No Wave was angry\, ugly\, snotty\, and loud. It used music and art as a battering ram and a form of psychic self-defense against naturally violent tendencies — the extreme reaction of a generation disappointed by everything the 1960’s had promised\, but failed to deliver.\"In a mix of prose-performance and discussion with Joseph Keckler\, this rebel-spirited presentation will explore the vibrant &#039\;movement&#039\; known as No Wave.\nJoseph Keckler is a musician\, writer and artist who zeroes in on moments from daily life to reveal strange\, absurd\, and heartbreaking voyages. He performs widely\, having been featured by NPR&#039\;s Tiny Desk series\, Lincoln Center\, Centre Pompidou\, among others. His writing has appeared in McSweeney’s\, Vice and elsewhere\, and in 2018 his first essay and story collection Dragon at the Edge of a Flat World was published by Turtle Point Press. In 2019 he premiered two full length works— the critically acclaimed Train With No Midnight with Beth Morrison Projects and an amalgamation of opera deaths\, Let Me Die\, with Opera Philadelphia— and toured the U.S. as the national support act for rock band Sleater-Kinney. His work has been supported by Creative Capital and he is a former U-M Witt Artist. He is currently working on new films and recordings. \nLearn more about COVID-19 protocols for Penny Stamps Speaker Series events.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Listen In: Big(ger) Ideas in Co-Curation and Equitable Engagement of Cultural Heritage Through Art with Dr. Tonya M. Matthews
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register: http://umma.umich.edu/plan-your-visit.\n \nA public keynote presentation from Dr. Tonya Matthews\, President and CEO of International African American Museum\, will ask curators and other listeners to grapple with an increasing call for bolder conversations in the curation of African American cultural heritage. \n \nDr. Tonya Matthews\, President and CEO of International African American Museum\, will ask us to grapple with increasing expectation for bolder conversations in curation of African American cultural heritage – particularly in considerations of descendants and living history. Is centering stewardship of enslaved African Americans’ craftwork at predominantly white institutions cultural appropriation or long-overdue acknowledgement? What are potential triggers of curating a community’s culture from outside of that geography? Is there any cross-learning in working with donors and working with descendants? Matthews will share learnings and current conversation surrounding the creation of the International African American Museum in Charleston\, South Carolina as context for being on the frontlines of grappling with the intersection of historical and living history.\n \nThe event is free and open to the public. It will also be available via livestream.\n \nSign up to receive a reminder: Click here\n \nThis talk is presented in preparation for Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield\, South Carolina\, an upcoming traveling exhibition focused on the work of African American potters in the 19th-century American South and the contemporary artists who have responded to it. The exhibition is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston. After debuting in New York City\, the exhibition will travel to Boston\, followed by UMMA in Fall 2023\, before the fourth and final venue\, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.\n \nDr. Tonya M. Matthews is Chief Executive Officer of the International African American Museum (IAAM) at the historically sacred site of Gadsden’s Wharf in Charleston\, SC. As a champion of authentic\, empathetic storytelling of American history\, IAAM is one of the nation’s newest platforms for the disruption of institutionalized racism as America continues the walk toward “a more perfect union.”  A thought-leader in inclusive frameworks\, social entrepreneurship\, and education\, Matthews has written articles and book chapters across these varied subjects. She is founder of The STEMinista Project\, a movement to engage girls in their future with STEM careers. Matthews is also a poet and is included in 100 Best African-American Poems (2010) edited by Nikki Giovanni. Matthews received her Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins University and her B.S.E. in engineering from Duke University\, alongside a certificate in African/African-American Studies. \n \nAbout the exhibition: Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield\, South Carolina  The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York (September 9\, 2022 – February 5\, 2023) Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston (March 6\, 2023 – July 9\, 2023) University of Michigan Museum of Art\, Ann Arbor (August 26\, 2023 – January 7\, 2024) High Museum of Art\, Atlanta (February 16\, 2024 – May 12\, 2024)\n \nHear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield\, South Carolina is an exhibition focused on the work of African American potters in the 19th-century American South and the contemporary artists who have responded to it. Organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, the exhibition is a groundbreaking presentation of approximately 60 ceramic objects from Edgefield\, South Carolina\, a center of ceramic production in the decades before the Civil War. Considered through the lens of recent scholarship in the fields of history\, literature\, anthropology\, diaspora\, material culture\, and African American studies\, these 19th-century wares testify to the artistic ambitions\, lived experiences\, and material knowledge of enslaved peoples and the realities of slavery in the industrial context.  \n \nHear Me Now offers a novel view of an underrepresented aspect of American enslavement\, foregrounding objects made by enslaved potters and bringing this important history to larger audiences. Additionally\, it aspires to link past to present\, in part by including the work of leading contemporary Black artists who have responded to the Edgefield story\, such as Simone Leigh and Woody De Othello\, among others.\n \nAdrienne Spinozzi\, Assistant Curator of American Decorative Arts in the American Wing at The Met\, Ethan Lasser\, John Moors Cabot Chair of the Art of the Americas at the MFA\, and Jason Young\, Associate Professor of History at the University of Michigan are co-curating this project. They are advised and supported by a national board of artists and scholars who offer invaluable input and perspectives\, throughout both the planning and development process.  \n\nThis program is organized in partnership with The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston\, and the U-M Department of History with support from the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and the U-M Arts Initiative.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Environmental Career Chat with Catherine Tao (Environmental Education)
DESCRIPTION:Environmental Career Chats are informal networking opportunities for U-M students to connect with environmental professionals about their career journeys. During these hour-long sessions\, PitE alumni share about their experiences working in various environmental fields and answer questions submitted by students. March’s virtual Environmental Career Chat is focused on Environmental Education with Catherine Tao. \n\nUpon graduating with a degree from PitE and Earth & Environmental Science in 2015\, Catherine moved out to a small dusty town called Bishop\, CA\, for a job as an AmeriCorp Education and Outreach Coordinator for a non-profit. However\, if she were being honest with herself at that time\, she would have admitted that she really chose the job for Bishop's outdoor recreation opportunities. Nestled in the rugged peaks of the Eastern Sierra\, she bounced between jobs with CA Dept of Fish and Wildlife and other technician positions that supplemented her pursuit of semi-professional alpine climbing. After several domestic and international climbing expeditions from Washington\, to Mexico\, to Tibet\, she moved to Oakland\, CA\, where she is now a high school science teacher\, teaching a senior capstone class about environmental activism and community change as she works towards her Master's in Education at California State University\, East Bay.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Equity Talks: Innovative Community Healing Through Music
DESCRIPTION:Music has the power to inspire\, evoke powerful emotion\, and heal our communities. In this event\, we will explore the connection between music and health\, explaining why music’s redemptive power may hold more potential than we realize. How does music speak to people in ways language cannot? Why is music education vitally important\, especially to those who are most in need? Change starts small. It can begin with something as simple as a daily artistic practice\, a creative habit. But over time\, that small commitment to our creativity will blossom and ripple through our communities in a way that connects us to our greater humanity.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Ties That Bind: Two One-Act Operas by African-American Composers - Canceled

Any questions regarding refunds\, exchanges\, or donations can be directed to smtdtickets@umich.edu.\n\n\nBonds are broken in this evening of two rarely performed\, one-act operatic gems\, written by Black American composers.\n\n“Rise for Freedom” composed by Adolphus Hailstork\, with libretto by David Gonzalez\nAnd “Highway 1\, U.S.A.” composed by William Grant Still\, with libretto by Verna Arvey\n\nThe Department of Voice and the University Philharmonia Orchestra\nMusic Direction by Kirk Severtson\nStage Direction by Danielle Wright\nSung in English \n\n“Highway 1\, U.S.A.” is an intimate family drama that pits brother against brother in a battle about love\, jealousy\, and greed. Composed by William Grant Still (1895-1978) with a libretto by his wife\, Verna Arvey (1910-1987)\, “Highway 1” received its premiere in 1963 and was rarely staged until it was produced by the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in 2021. This one-act opera by the “Dean of African-American Composers” features a sweeping score that brilliantly blends elements of Romanticism\, blues\, and musical theatre with a classical musical structure. \n\n“Rise for Freedom: The John P. Parker Story” receives its academic premiere with this production\, its second ever. Composer Adolphus Hailstork (b. 1941) and librettist David Gonzalez (b. 1956) adapted this dramatic rendering of the life of John P. Parker\, an enslaved person who earned enough money to buy his freedom. He went on to establish a foundry in Ripley\, Ohio\, and held three known patents as an inventor\, all while working as an Underground Railroad conductor to ferry hundreds of people escaping from slavery across the Ohio River from Northern Kentucky. “Rise for Freedom” was commissioned in 2007 by the Cincinnati Opera.\n\nHailstork received his Ph.D. in Composition from Michigan State University and is a professor of composition at Old Dominion University in Norfolk\, Virginia. Librettist Gonzalez is a professional storyteller\, poet\, playwright\, and musician who has been a Fellow of the Joseph Campbell Foundation and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. He earned his doctorate in Music Therapy from New York University.\n\nTogether\, these different operas highlight voices that are underrepresented in the operatic canon. This double bill will run approximately 2 hours\, and will be sung in English. \n\n\n**Please Note: Due to new U-M health and safety guidance\, recently updated in January 2022\, this indoor\, ticketed performance requires audience members to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative PCR Covid test within 72 hrs of the performance. By purchasing this performance you agree to adhere to these guidelines and any other health and safety measures already currently in place (such as wearing a face mask in our venues and auditioriums for the duration of the performance as well as a screening for symptoms through the ResponsiBlue app). **

SUMMARY:Performance:The Cactus Blossoms with special guest Alexa Rose
DESCRIPTION:*Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information and policies before purchasing a ticket and again before attending a show. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave.*\n\n“Hey baby\, do you wanna take a trip with me? / I’ve got a feeling there might be a silver lining all around.” So begins One Day\, the captivating new album from critically acclaimed Minneapolis duo The Cactus Blossoms. Written and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic\, the record explores the tension between optimism and despair that’s defined much of the past few years of American life\, examining the power (or naïveté\, depending on your perspective) of positive thinking in the face of chaos and uncertainty. The songs here are tender and timeless\, with straightforward arrangements centered around brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum’s airtight harmonies\, and the performances are warm and intimate to match\, delivered with a soulful\, ’70s-inspired palette of playful Wurlitzer\, breezy guitars\, and muscular percussion.\n\nThe Cactus Blossoms broke out nationally in 2016 with their JD McPherson-produced debut\, You’re Dreaming. Dates with Kacey Musgraves\, Jenny Lewis\, and Lucius followed\, as did raves from the New York Times and NPR\, who praised “the brothers’ extraordinary singing.” The band was further catapulted into the spotlight in 2018\, when David Lynch tapped them to perform in the return of Twin Peaks\, and continued to build on their success with their 2019 sophomore LP\, Easy Way\, which led Rolling Stone to laud the duo’s “rock-solid\, freak of genetics harmonies.”
