SUMMARY:Exhibition:Dutch Studies: A Decolonial Revision
DESCRIPTION:In 1956\, 11 years after proclaiming Indonesia’s independence from 350 years of Dutch occupation\, the first president of Indonesia\, Sukarno\, received an honorary doctor of civil law degree conferred by U-M President Harlan Hatcher. As we celebrate fifty years of Dutch at the University of Michigan with this exhibit\, we trace our paths toward a new frame for Dutch Studies — one that emphasizes colonial repair and rethinks which voices matter. View the exhibit in the north lobby of the Hatcher Library.\n\nAbout the exhibit:\n\nIn the section titled “A New Canon\,\" the exhibit includes an empty space where the novel Max Havelaar by Multatuli would be\, the “top 10” book touted to have “ended colonialism.\" With the empty space\, we acknowledge the book’s white saviorism that rang in the new era of colonial oppression and cultural genocide called the “(Dutch) Ethical Policy.\" The books in our new canon crowd out Multatuli’s empty space in the same way that the other materials on display\, such as the sound of the carillon score of Gold Coast composer\, Charles E. Graves\, or the voice of Indonesian forerunner of colonial reparations\, Jeffry Pondaag\, drowns out the spaces left blank by Willem Janszoon Blaeu’s maps\, which reside in our U-M Library collections but are purposely not displayed.\n\nThe exhibit continues with collections of materials that show the Dutch program’s comparative approach to Dutch Studies\, one that connects histories and cultures and creates understanding through familiar frames of reference. Our collection of Anne Frank materials is supplemented with U-M Professor of History Rudolf Mrázek’s comparative work on the “model camps” of Theresienstadt (Nazi) and Boven Digoel (Dutch). A translation of Leendert van der Valk’s article “1619” on the Dutch foundations of U.S. slavery lies next to Marjolein van Pagee’s Banda: De Genocide van Jan Pieterszoon Coen\, an analysis of the 1621 Dutch genocide and enslavement of the Bandanese people.\n\nThe last part of the exhibit highlights the speakers scheduled to deliver lectures at an end-of-semester anniversary symposium.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Exhibition:How to Build a Disaster Proof House
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tracey Snelling’s *How to Build a Disaster Proof House* contemplates the uncertainty\, displacement\, and disenfranchisement that frames the present day. How do we find a safe place\, protected from bad weather and circumstance\, in an era of floods\, fires\,violence\, abuse and pandemics? \n\nSnelling finds a route for escape by constructing big and small sculptural worlds\, private and public. \n\nSnelling is at U-M this winter term as the current Roman Witt Artist in Residence. During her residency\, the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and its Osterman Common Room will function as a “laboratory\,” or open studio\, where visitors can see the artist’s creative process as the installation evolves\, and the rooms change\, debunking any presumptive myth of permanence. \n\nSnelling’s pop aesthetic incorporates prefab objects\, bright colors\, light\, video\, and sound. The work is disarming in its exuberance\, reassuring us there is no such thing as a zombie under the bed\, while at the same time\, making room to process the very real and unsettling world in which we live. \n\nThrough workshops guided by Snelling\, U-M students and others from our local and outlying communities will create small-scale rooms or dwellings…”a room of one’s own” reflective of their personal feelings and ideas about home\, safety\, and dreams. \n\nThe experience of crafting together articulates the fundamental importance of our relationship to one another. The myriad of rooms will be displayed ongoing in the Osterman Common Room\, as well as becoming part of an installation on wheels\, a mobile unit meant to travel throughout town.\n\nThe mobile installation contemplates how we measure our sense of belonging\, or where we come from\, in a world of ongoing transitions and migrations. \n\nSnelling’s project fosters belonging despite all of the different ways we live and co-exist\, beyond structures and times of remoteness. Concurrently\, the installation embraces our everyday existence and the power of our individual and collective imagination. \n\nIn her previous 2017 Institute for the Humanities Gallery exhibition *Here and There*\, Snelling pushed up against the challenges of economic inequities\, racial biases\, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people. \n\n “The ongoing lack of affordable health care\, systematic racism\, class division\, economic downturn\, and the impacts of climate change all contribute to global poverty and housing issues…\,\" states Snelling. \"By working on this project with U-M students and communities regionally\, I hope to not only raise awareness of housing precarity but also be responsive together as a community...to the challenges facing our fellow citizens.”\n\n-Amanda Krugliak Arts Curator\n\nThe overall project *How To Build a Disaster Proof House* is curated by Amanda Krugiak\, Arts Curator and Assistant Director of Arts Programming at the Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with Chrisstina Hamilton\, Director of the Roman Witt Residency Program at the Stamps School. Tracey Snelling is the Stamps 2022 Roman Witt Artist in Residence.\n\nThe project has included workshops with groups across the U-M campus and further afield in the regional community at spaces including the Ann Arbor Art Center (A2AC)\, The Shelter Association of Washtenaw County at the Robert J. Delonis Center and Freighthouse Day Shelter\, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti\; and shelter for New Americans in Hamtramck. Thanks to U-M student and Delonis caseworker Alexzandra McCrum\, A2AC Gallery Director Ashley Miller\, Stamps MDes students and Stamps professor Nick Tobier for all of your guidance and help facilitating these outreach engagements.\n\nThe Disaster Proof mobile unit will be exhibited at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival in the Michigan Theater\, Tuesday March 22 - Sunday March 27\, 2022. Snelling’s short film A Poem is a City\, created in collaboration with Arthur Debert\, will be in competition as part of this year’s AAFF programming. A *Disaster Proof* community installation will appear at the Ann Arbor Art Center beginning in mid-April in connection with the A2AC Gallery’s inaugural exhibition\, *Sharing Space* (May 20 - July 8\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Performance:Masterclass: Inon Bartanan\, piano
DESCRIPTION:“One of the most admired pianists of his generation” (New York Times)\, Inon Barnatan has established a unique and varied career\, equally celebrated as a soloist\, curator and collaborator. A regular soloist with many of the world’s foremost orchestras and conductors\, he served as the inaugural Artist-in-Association of the New York Philharmonic for three seasons. \n\nThis winter sees his return to the Chicago Symphony and London Philharmonic\, his debuts with the Liverpool Philharmonic and Montreal Symphony orchestras\, and recitals based on his “Time-Traveler Suite” album. Released on Pentatone in November 2021 \, “The Time Traveler’s Suite” merges Baroque movements by Bach\, Handel\, Rameau and Couperin with movements by Ravel\, Ligeti\, Barber and Thomas Adès to create a unique baroque-inspired suite\, culminating in Brahms’ Variations on a theme by Handel. \n\nDuring the first part of the 2019-20 season\, Inon played with the symphony orchestras of Minnesota\, Dresden\, Barcelona\, Stockholm\, Ottawa\, Innsbruck\, Tenerife and Los Angeles\, recreated Beethoven’s legendary 1808 concert with the Cincinnati Symphony\, and finished recording the complete Beethoven piano concertos with Alan Gilbert and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. When public concerts stopped during the pandemic\, Barnatan recorded concert films and streamed performances with the symphony orchestras of Boston\, Pittsburgh\, Atlanta\, Detroit\, New Jersey and San Diego\, conducted Mozart and Beethoven concertos from the keyboard with the Seattle Symphony\, performed the U.S. premiere of Matthias Pintscher’s Piano Concerto with the New World Symphony\, and played numerous recitals and chamber music performances online. \n\nThe recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant and Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award\, Barnatan is also a sought-after recitalist and chamber musician\, and in 2019 he embarked on his first season as music director of La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest in California\, one of the foremost music festivals in the U.S. During the 2019-20 season he played solo recitals at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall and London’s Wigmore Hall and reunited for a European tour with his frequent recital partner\, cellist Alisa Weilerstein. \n\nPassionate about contemporary music\, Barnatan has commissioned and performed works by many living composers\, premiering pieces by Thomas Adès\, Sebastian Currier\, Avner Dorman\, and Andrew Norman\, among many others.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Jeff Regier\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Statistics\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Bayesian statistics provides an elegant formalism for interpreting astronomical images: scientifically interesting but unknown properties of imaged stars and galaxies are treated as latent random variables and pixel intensities are treated as observed random variables. It is challenging\, however\, to efficiently infer the posterior distribution for realistic Bayesian models of astronomical images. In this talk\, I present the Bayesian Light Source Separator (BLISS)\, which overcomes this challenge through the judicious use of modern variational inference techniques. BLISS embeds a flexible galaxy model that is encoded by a neural network within an interpretable generative model of astronomical images\, and employs neural networks\, stochastic optimization\, and a novel variational bound to facilitate posterior inference. In comparison to a recently published method based on MCMC for detecting astronomical objects in crowded fields\, BLISS performs posterior inference 10\,000 times faster while achieving substantially higher accuracy.\n\nhttps://regier.stat.lsa.umich.edu/

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Does Cryptocurrency Have a Future?
DESCRIPTION:Register to attend at: http://umsi.info/elo-register\n\nIt’s increasingly hard to find anyone to seriously defend the current state of cryptocurrencies. The predominant use of cryptocurrencies is speculation\, which is almost certain to result in a bubble and crash. The second most common use is for fraud and crime of one kind or another. The largest currencies\, notably BitCoin\, are now among the most egregious contributors to climate change.\n\nIn this informal talk and discussion\, Nathaniel Borenstein will explain how the very concept of cryptocurrency has been hijacked by people and groups with personal or political agendas. In particular\, he will try to separate the current generation of cryptocurrencies and their problems from the wider range of digital currencies that have existed in the past and are likely to exist in the future\, and will discuss how\, if they were better designed and regulated\, cryptocurrencies might yet play a valuable role in the economy. \n \nNathaniel hopes for a lively discussion rather than just a lecture. While he will not hide his beliefs\, he will try to be aware of and transparent about his own biases\, and welcomes a constructive discussion with anyone holding opposing views.\n\nNathaniel Borenstein has been an Internet innovator since 1980. In 1994\, he founded the first online payment system\, First Virtual Holdings\, and in 2000\, he founded the first network-based point-of-sale system\, NetPOS. He has followed developments in online payments since the 1980's\, and he sees Bitcoin as a genuine threat to human civilization.\n\nRegister to attend at: http://umsi.info/elo-register

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:EIHS Symposium: Whither Critical Disaster Studies?
DESCRIPTION:Format: This event is presented in hybrid format: in-person in 1014 Tisch Hall and virtual via Zoom webinar (register: https://myumi.ch/M9zd4).\n\nDescription: The interdisciplinary field of critical disaster studies both builds on and expands long-standing work on disasters in a variety of disciplines. Its critical contribution lies in raising several first-order questions that have often been taken for granted: Why are some things defined as disasters and others are not? What is the assumed temporality in naming something as a disaster? How are disasters represented and experienced? How do particular understandings of disasters impact post-disaster recoveries? Our multi-disciplinary panel will explore these questions and more as each panelist engages the field from the perspective of their area of specialization.\n\nPanelists:\n• Matthew Ghazarian (Manoogian Postdoctoral Fellow\, Center for Armenian Studies\, University of Michigan)\n• Susan Scott Parrish (Professor\; English Language and Literature\, University of Michigan)\n• Dean Yang (Professor of Public Policy and Economics\, Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy\, University of Michigan)\n• Melanie Tanielian (moderator\; Associate Professor\, History\, University of Michigan)\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Mechanisms of Action and Sources of Variability in Neurostimulation for Chronic Pain
DESCRIPTION:Chronic pain is a debilitating neurological disorder which affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Neurostimulation therapies\, such as spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRGS)\, are non-addictive alternatives for managing chronic neuropathic pain that is refractory to conventional medical management. SCS and DRGS apply sequences of brief electrical impulses to neural tissue. However\, not all patients receiving these therapies obtain adequate pain relief\, and patient outcomes are not improving despite decades of clinical experience and advancements in stimulation technology. This dissertation addresses two crucial knowledge gaps limiting the success of neurostimulation therapies: 1) we do not understand the physiological mechanisms of electrical stimulation-induced pain relief\, and 2) we do not understand the sources of variability affecting the neural response to stimulation.\n\nThe first portion of this thesis examined the mechanisms of action of DRGS. We developed statistical models of neural element (i.e.\, cell bodies\, axons) locations in histological samples of human dorsal root ganglia (DRG) tissue. Next\, we employed a histologically informed field-cable modeling approach to study the neural response to DRGS. We coupled a finite element method model of the potential distribution generated by DRGS to multi-compartment cable models of DRG neurons to simulate which types of sensory neurons are activated by therapeutic DRGS. Our data suggest that clinical DRGS directly activates the subset of sensory neurons that code non-painful touch sensations\, which may trigger pain-inhibition neural networks in the spinal cord dorsal horn.\n\nThe second portion of this thesis investigated how biological variability at different scales (e.g.\, single cells\, patient anatomy) affected the neural response to stimulation. We implemented a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to parametrize populations of neurons with heterogeneous ion channel expression profiles. We incorporated this approach in our field-cable model of DRGS and showed that variability in ion channel expression can affect the stimulation amplitude required to generate activity in target neurons. We further applied this population-modeling approach to investigate how pathology induced changes in ion channel expression can affect the behavior of neural circuits governing sensory transmission. Finally\, we developed a framework for constructing patient-specific field-cable models of patients receiving SCS. This framework captured the effect of key anatomical details (e.g.\, the amount of cerebrospinal fluid between a patient’s SCS electrode array and the spinal cord) on neural activation during stimulation. Furthermore\, this patient-specific modeling framework allows the comparison of model predictions of neural activation during SCS with clinical data\, such as patient-reported outcomes (e.g.\, pain relief).\n\nThe results of this dissertation suggest that DRGS may share mechanisms of action with other neurostimulation therapies for pain management\, such as SCS. This dissertation also developed frameworks for studying the effect of biological variability on the nervous system’s response to electrical stimulation. To develop safe and effective therapies for neurological disorders\, it is crucial to understand both the physiological mechanisms of symptom relief\, and how the neural response to therapy may vary across cells\, circuits\, and patients. This dissertation provides novel insights on both aspects as they relate to neurostimulation for chronic pain.\n\nDate: Friday\, March 25\, 2022\nTime: 12:00 PM EST\nZoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/93382361344 (password: neuron)\nChair: Dr. Scott F. SUMMARY:Presentation:Methods Hour: Attention: From Independent to Dependent Variable
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThis talk will cover the emergence of attention as an object of psychological study at the end of the nineteenth century. Specifically\, it addresses how psychologists shifted from assuming they had control of subjects' attention as a tool for studying other phenomena to studying attention in its own right. My hope is that we can discuss both current research paradigms related to attention (e.g. eye-tracking) as well as other examples of this arc from independent to dependent variable and/or how experimental tools end up becoming the objects of experiment.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:AE200 Seminar Series | Day in the Life of a Startup CEO
DESCRIPTION:Uma Subramanian\nCEO\nAero Technologies\n\nThere is a lot of hype about startups\, and even more hype about being a Startup CEO. But what does it really mean to start something from scratch? In this talk\, Uma Subramanian\, CEO of startup air carrier Aero Technologies\, will share some insights on what a day in the life is really like.\n\nAbout the speaker...\nUma Subramanian is the CEO of Aero Technologies\, a next generation premium air carrier for the experience economy. Uma joined Aero in March 2019\, and in just 12 months built an air carrier with operations in the US and Europe. In its first summer of operation\, Aero was gross margin positive\, despite the global pandemic. \n\nIn addition to her work at Aero\, Uma is a thought leader in next generation aviation\, especially urban air mobility. She sits on the advisory board of Volocopter GMBH and is a venture advisor to UP Partners\, a pioneering urban air mobility fund. \n\nPrior to Aero\, Uma was the founding CEO of Voom.Flights\, an Airbus company\, which built the world’s first urban air mobility network with helicopters\, and thus laid the foundation for electric VTOL networks In three years\, Voom.Flights launched in São Paulo and Mexico City\, and flew thousands of passengers on intracity routes. \n\nBy way of background\, Uma holds an undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan\, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Uma is passionate about aerospace and has spent the majority of her career working in the industry: first on the space program at Northrop Grumman\, then in M&A at Rolls Royce and Ultra Electronics\, and most recently at Airbus.\n \nUma believes that this is an extraordinary time in aviation and looks forward to building the future of flight.\n\nRegister - https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEqfu2gpzsqH9PK9ZMR7d_lvdsBufe1qX5X

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Corporate Activism and Organizational Authenticity
DESCRIPTION:Corporate activism is when a firm takes a public stance on a social or political issue. Although the public increasingly expects corporations to engage in activism\, their support varies across individual corporate activist campaigns. While social movement theories predict that the public will support corporate activism in general\, organizational authenticity theory suggests that corporate activism may backfire if a firm lacks type or moral authenticity. Using semi-structured interviews with a variety of different stakeholders\, a national survey on 525 corporate Black Lives Matter statements\, and two pre-registered experiments\, we find that the public generally supports corporate activism\, but that a firm’s type and moral authenticity can substitute for one another in shaping the public’s attitudes (support for and intention to join) and behaviors (donation and writing letters of support). We contribute to social movement theory by bringing in organizational theories of authenticity to help us explain when and why corporate activism sometimes fails to mobilize support\, and we extend research on organizational authenticity by showing an interaction between type and moral authenticity.

SUMMARY:Presentation:CCN Forum:
DESCRIPTION:Shreya\n\nTitle:\nMapping Individual Trajectories of Structural and Cognitive Decline in Mild Cognitive Impairment\n\nAbstract:\nThe US has an aging population. For the first time in US history\, the number of older adults is projected to outnumber that of children by 2034. This combined with the fact that the prevalence of Alzheimer's Disease increases exponentially with age makes for a worrying combination. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an intermediate stage of cognitive decline between being cognitively normal and having full-blown Dementia\, with every third person with MCI progressing to dementia of the Alzheimer's Type (DAT). While there is no known way to reverse symptoms once they begin\, early prediction of disease can help stall its progression and help with early financial planning. While grey matter volume loss in the Hippocampus and Entorhinal Cortex (EC) are characteristic biomarkers of DAT\, little is known about the rates of decrease of these volumes within individuals in MCI state across time. We used longitudinal growth curve models to map individual trajectories of volume loss in subjects with MCI. We then looked at whether these rates of volume decrease could predict progression to DAT right in the MCI stage. Finally\, we evaluated whether these rates of Hippocampal and EC volume loss were correlated with individual rates of decline of episodic memory\, visuospatial ability\, and executive function.\n\nKaty\n\nTitle:\nUsing precision neuroimaging to densely map cognitive control\n\nAbstract:\nMost neuroimaging studies of brain function analyze data in normalized space to identify regions of common activation across participants. These studies treat interindividual differences in brain organization as noise\, but this approach can obscure important information about the brain’s functional architecture. Recently\, a number of studies have adopted a precision imaging approach that collects multiple hours of data from each participant to map brain function on a finer scale. However\, these studies have most often used resting-state connectivity\, and recent evidence suggests that the inclusion of multiple task states may provide better insight into the function of different brain areas. Using an extension of these recent methods that is both person-specific and dense\, we created functional parcellations of individuals’ cognitive control areas. Upon examination of preliminary data\, we find that these parcellations are individually unique and reliable\, demonstrating this approach’s promise in furthering our understanding of the neural architecture underlying cognitive control.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Grilk Annual Memorial Lecture - Winter 2022
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Winter 2022 Grilk Annual Memorial Lecture.\n\nThis year\, our guest speaker is Dr. Venkat Mani\, Professor of German & World Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.\n\nDrawing on his current book project on refugees and the global novel\, in this lecture Mani asks how would our understanding of categories of national\, world\, or minor literatures change if unsettlement\, rather than settlement\, became the keyword for framing our study of literature? The lecture will underscore the significance of a global comparative literary and historical framework in the twenty-first century to undo structures of disciplinary ethno-nationalism.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Black Hole Searches for Ultralight Bosons
DESCRIPTION:Theories that seek to explain the outstanding puzzles of the Standard Model of particle physics often predict new\, light\, feebly-interacting particles whose discovery requires novel search strategies. These include light spin-0 axions and spin-1 dark photons. I will discuss how rotating black holes source clouds of exponentially large numbers of gravitationally-bound particles and so create nature's laboratories for ultralight bosons. This process causes black holes to spin down and the bound bosons emit gravitational waves\, allowing observatories such as LIGO and Virgo to search for new particles. For a new dark photon particle that couples to the Standard Model\, the systems could undergo dramatic electromagnetic cascades and appear as novel pulsar-like objects in the sky.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - W. Ashley Griffith\, The Ohio State University
DESCRIPTION:Exhumed fault zones offer insights into near-field earthquake processes in unparalleled spatial resolution. Unfortunately\, differentiating seismic slip from slow or aseismic slip based on evidence preserved in the rock record is not trivial. Until a few years ago\, pseudotachylyte (solidified frictional melt) was broadly considered the only reliable indicator of past earthquake rupture\, because frictional heat production can only achieve melting temperatures during rapid slip. Significant progress in fault rock studies over the past two decades has revealed a range of reaction products which can be used to detect frictional heating at peak temperatures less than the melt temperature of the rock. We have also learned that\, in addition to on-fault products of rapid slip\, transient perturbations in the stress state adjacent to the fault are capable of producing fault damage zone structures diagnostic of earthquake rupture. In this talk I will discuss the process of coseismic fracture and fragmentation of rocks to form pulverized fault damage zone rocks. Pulverized rocks have several peculiar features that make them unique fingerprints of past earthquake rupture. We have devised several new experimental rock mechanics techniques to simulate complex\, impulsive loading histories expected near earthquake rupture tips\, and we are using them to place constraints on the stress and strain rate fields associated with coseismic rock fragmentation and the potential energy sink that this process represents for earthquake ruptures. Our ongoing work is focused on using fragmented and pulverized rocks to determine past earthquake rupture directivity\, to better understand how fault damage zones evolve\, and to develop metrics for determine the maximum credible earthquake magnitude (Mmax) possible on active faults by studying damage zone structure.

SUMMARY:Performance:Crystal Bowersox
DESCRIPTION:Crystal Bowersox\, a northwest Ohio native calling Nashville\, TN home\, has built her life around music. Crystal’s love for music developed at an early age from her need to find peace in a chaotic world. Through art and creation\, Crystal was able to direct her energy and emotion into finding a way to mend a young mind in turmoil. For her\, music has always been the most effective form of catharsis.\n\nIn June of 2020\, Crystal released the first single from her long awaited\, upcoming album\, HitchHiker\, to be released January of 2022. The first single\, \"Courage to Be Kind\"\, was written in 2017 with accomplished songwriter\, Steve Seskin. In the folk - rock\, gospel anthem\, Crystal’s voice soars as she tackles several controversial topics. “It takes Courage to be kind / To be brave enough to walk your love across a party line.” Seskin and Bowersox were making an attempt to process the heartache felt by so many when bridges are burned\, families are destroyed\, and wars are endlessly waged. The pair wondered what it truly takes to heal deeply rooted\, generational wounds\, as mentioned in the verses of the powerful song.\n\nCourage\, they concluded. It takes courage to begin the process of healing.\n---\nProof of COVID vaccination required for entry. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Ties That Bind: Two One-Act Operas by African-American Composers - Canceled
DESCRIPTION:All scheduled performances are cancelled. Ticket holders can obtain a refund\, exchange their tickets for a different production\, or donate the cost of their tickets to the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, depending on their preference. We ask that all ticket holders contact us via a form at https://forms.gle/NMLr2sMrYX4tWEkv5 by March 31st—all remaining tickets after this date will be automatically refunded. Any questions regarding refunds\, exchanges\, or donations can be directed to smtdtickets@umich.edu.\n\n\nBonds are broken in this evening of two rarely performed\, one-act operatic gems\, written by Black American composers.\n\n“Rise for Freedom” composed by Adolphus Hailstork\, with libretto by David Gonzalez\nAnd “Highway 1\, U.S.A.” composed by William Grant Still\, with libretto by Verna Arvey\n\nThe Department of Voice and the University Philharmonia Orchestra\nMusic Direction by Kirk Severtson\nStage Direction by Danielle Wright\nSung in English \n\n“Highway 1\, U.S.A.” is an intimate family drama that pits brother against brother in a battle about love\, jealousy\, and greed. Composed by William Grant Still (1895-1978) with a libretto by his wife\, Verna Arvey (1910-1987)\, “Highway 1” received its premiere in 1963 and was rarely staged until it was produced by the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in 2021. This one-act opera by the “Dean of African-American Composers” features a sweeping score that brilliantly blends elements of Romanticism\, blues\, and musical theatre with a classical musical structure. \n\n“Rise for Freedom: The John P. Parker Story” receives its academic premiere with this production\, its second ever. Composer Adolphus Hailstork (b. 1941) and librettist David Gonzalez (b. 1956) adapted this dramatic rendering of the life of John P. Parker\, an enslaved person who earned enough money to buy his freedom. He went on to establish a foundry in Ripley\, Ohio\, and held three known patents as an inventor\, all while working as an Underground Railroad conductor to ferry hundreds of people escaping from slavery across the Ohio River from Northern Kentucky. “Rise for Freedom” was commissioned in 2007 by the Cincinnati Opera.\n\nHailstork received his Ph.D. in Composition from Michigan State University and is a professor of composition at Old Dominion University in Norfolk\, Virginia. Librettist Gonzalez is a professional storyteller\, poet\, playwright\, and musician who has been a Fellow of the Joseph Campbell Foundation and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. He earned his doctorate in Music Therapy from New York University.\n\nTogether\, these different operas highlight voices that are underrepresented in the operatic canon. This double bill will run approximately 2 hours\, and will be sung in English. \n\n\n**Please Note: Due to new U-M health and safety guidance\, recently updated in January 2022\, this indoor\, ticketed performance requires audience members to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative PCR Covid test within 72 hrs of the performance. By purchasing this performance you agree to adhere to these guidelines and any other health and safety measures already currently in place (such as wearing a face mask in our venues and auditioriums for the duration of the performance as well as a screening for symptoms through the ResponsiBlue app). **
